Scattering theory for graphs isomorphic to a homogeneous tree at infinity

We describe the spectral theory of the adjacency operator of a graph which is isomorphic to homogeneous trees at infinity. Using some combinatorics, we reduce the problem to a scattering problem for a finite rank perturbation of the adjacency operator on an homogeneous tree. We developp this scattering theory using the classical recipes for Schrödinger operators in Euclidian spaces.

Magnetic interpretation of the nodal defect on graphs

In this note, we present a natural proof of a recent and surprising result of Gregory Berkolaiko (arXiv 1110.5373) interpreting the "Courant nodal defect" of a Schrödinger operator on a finite graph as a Morse index associated to the deformations of the operator by switching on a magnetic field. This proof is inspired by a nice paper of Miroslav Fiedler published in 1975.

Semi-classical trace formulas and heat expansions

in the recent paper [Journal of Physics A, 43474-0288 (2011)], B. Helffer and R. Purice compute the second term of a semi-classical trace formula for a Schrödinger operator with magnetic field. We show how to recover their formula by using the methods developped by the geometers in the seventies for the heat expansions.

Scattering and correlations

In this paper we give an exact relation between the Green's function in a scattering problem for a wave equation and the correlation of scattered plane waves. This general relation was proved in a special case by Sanchez-Sesma and al.

Bohr-Sommerfeld phases for avoided crossings

We consider the adiabatic limit in quantum mechanics with several avoided crossings. We compute the interferences effects uniformly w.r. to the gaps and the adiabatic parameter. This way we get the asymoptotic expansion of the global scattering matrix. We use the technics of normal forms introduced in the paper written with B. Parisse (Commun. Math. Phys. 205 pp. 459--500 (1999)).

A Semi-classical calculus of correlations

The method of passive imaging in seismology has been developped recently in order to image the earth crust from recordings of the seismic noise. This method is founded on the computation of correlations of the seismic noise. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for this correlation in the "semi-classical" regime. In order to do that, we define the power spectrum of a random field as the ensemble average of its Wigner measure, this allows phase-space computations: the pseudo-differential calculus and the ray theory. This way, we get a formula for the correlation of the seismic noise in the semi-classcial regime with a source noise which can be localized and non homogeneous. After that, we show how the use of surface guided waves allows to image the earth crust.

Confining quantum particles with a purely magnetic field

We consider an open domain with a compact boundary in an Euclidean space and a Schroedinger operator with magnetic field on this domain. We give sufficient conditions on the rate of growth of the magnetic field near the boundary which guarantees essential self-adjointness of this operator. From the physical point of view, it means that the quantum particle is confined in the domain by the magnetic field. We construct examples on polytopes and domains with smooth boundaries; these examples of "magnetic bottles" are highly simplified models of what is done for nuclear fusion in tokamacs.

Semi-classical analysis and passive imaging

Passive imaging is a new technique which has been proved to be very efficient, for example in seismology: the correlation of the noisy fields, computed from the fields recorded at different points, is strongly related to the Green function of the wave propagation. The aim of this paper is to provide a mathematical context for this approach and to show, in particular, how the methods of semi-classical analysis can be be used in order to find the asymptotic behaviour of the correlations.

An extension of the Duistermaat-Singer Theorem to the semi-classical Weyl algebra

Motivated by many recent works (by L. Charles, V. Guillemin, T. Paul, J. Sjöstrand, A. Uribe, S. Vu Ngoc, S. Zelditch and others) on the semi-classical Birkhoff normal forms, we investigate the structure of the group of automorphisms of the graded semi-classical Weyl algebra which is used to get the normal forms. The answer is quite similar to the Theorem of Duistermaat and Singer for the usual algebra of pseudo-differential operators where all automorphisms are given by conjugation by an elliptic Fourier Integral Operator (a FIO). Here what replaces general non-linear symplectic diffeomeorhisms is just linear complex symplectic maps, because everything is localized at a single point.

The semi-classical spectrum and the Birkhoff normal form

The purposes of this note are: 1) to propose a direct and "elementary" proof of the main result proved by Guillemin-Paul-Uribe [GPU], namely that the semi-classical spectrum near a global minimum of the classical Hamiltonian determines the whole semi-classical Birkhoff normal form (denoted the BNF) in the non-resonant case. 2) to present in the completely resonant case a similar problem.

Modes and quasi-modes on surfaces: variation on an idea of Andrew Hassell

This paper is inspired from the nice result of Andrew Hassell on the eigenfunctions in the stadium billiard. From a classical paper of V. Arnol'd, we know that quasi-modes are not always close to exact modes. We show that, for almost all Riemannian metrics on closed surfaces with an elliptic generic closed geodesic C, there exists exact modes located on C. Related problems in the integrable case are discussed in several papers of John Toth and Steve Zelditch.

A semi-classical inverse problem I: Taylor expansions

In dimension 1, we show that the Taylor expansion of a potential near a generic non degenerate critical point can be recovered from the knowledge of the semi-classical spectrum of the associated Schrödinger operator near the corresponding critical value.
