Empirical signatures of velocity and density cascades in the Local Universe probed by the CosmicFlows4 dataset

Aims: Our aim is to characterise the multiscale statistical properties of the reconstructed velocity and density fields of the nearby Universe, identify possible scaling regimes, quantify intermittency, and assess indications for the transition towards large-scale homogeneity within the range probed by current data. Methods: We analysed the Cosmicflows-4 three-dimensional velocity and density-contrast cubes using absolute structure functions of arbitrary order, $q$. The analysis was performed within a volume extending to $z \lesssim 0.08$ ($\simeq 350~\mathrm{Mpc}$ $h^{-1}$). Structure function scaling exponents $\zeta(q)$ were estimated from configuration-space statistics. Intermittency was characterised using the universal multifractal formalism, and the probability density functions of increments were examined. Results: Two regimes were detected. Small separations are dominated by reconstruction smoothing and show a nearly linear $\zeta(q)$ behaviour. At larger separations, a scaling regime appears with $\zeta_\rho(1)\simeq0.3$ ($D_\rho\approx3.7$) and $\zeta_v(1)\simeq0.4$. The correlation function follows $\xi(r)\sim r^{-1.4}$ over $[45,250]~\mathrm{Mpc}\,h^{-1}$, implying $D_2\simeq1.6$. Non-linear $\zeta(q)$ and L\'evy-stable increment probability density functions (PDFs) indicate intermittency and strong non-Gaussianity. The velocity increments show a systematic negative skewness suggestive of a cascade-like asymmetry associated with amplification of negative compressive gradients.

Near-infrared identification of the counterpart to X1908+075: a new OB-supergiant X-ray binary

We report the near-infrared (IR) identification of the likely counterpart to X1908+075, a highly-absorbed Galactic X-ray source recently suspected to belong to the rare class of OB supergiant-neutron star binary systems. Our JHKs-band imaging of the field reveals the existence within the X-ray error boxes of a near-IR source consistent with an early-type star lying at d=7 kpc and suffering A(V)=16 mag of extinction, the latter value being in good agreement with the hydrogen column density derived from a modelling of the X-ray spectrum. Our follow-up, near-IR spectroscopic observations confirm the nature of this candidate and lead to a late O-type supergiant classification, thereby supporting the identification of a new Galactic OB-supergiant X-ray binary.

HST Imagery and CFHT Fabry-Perot 2-D Spectroscopy in Halpha of the Ejected Nebula M1-67: Turbulent Status

With HST-WFPC2 we have obtained a deep, H-alpha image of the WR nebula M1-67. With the interferometer of the Universite Laval (Quebec, Canada), we have obtained complementary Fabry-Perot H-alpha data using CFHT MOS/SIS. On the deep H-alpha image we have performed continuous wavelet transforms to isolate stochastic structures of different characteristic size and look for scaling laws. Small-scale wavelet coefficients show that the density field of M1-67 is remarkably structured in chaotically oriented filaments. We draw attention to a short, marginally inertial range at the smallest scales (6.7-15.0 X 10^{-3} pc), which can be attributed to turbulence in M1-67, and a strong scale break at larger scales. Using our Fabry-Perot interferograms, we also present an investigation of the statistical properties of fluctuating gas motions using structure functions traced by H-alpha emission-line centroid velocities. We find that there is a clear correlation at scales 0.02-0.22 pc between the mean quadratic differences of radial velocities and distance over the surface of the nebula. This implies that the velocity field shows an inertial range likely related to turbulence. The first and second order moments of the velocity increments are found to scale as <|Delta v(r)|> ~ r^{0.5} and <|Delta v(r)|^2> \~ r^{0.9}. The former scaling law strongly suggests that compressible turbulence is at play in M1-67, on the other hand, the latter scaling law agrees very well with Larson-type laws for velocity turbulence. Examination of the structure functions for different orders shows that the turbulent regime is slightly intermittent and highly multifractal with universal multifractal indexes alpha ~ 1.90-1.92 and C_1 ~ 0.04 \pm 0.01.
