An Anomalous Phase in the Relaxor Ferroelectric Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$

X-ray diffraction studies on a Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PZN) single crystal sample show the presence of two different structures. An outer-layer exists in the outer most $\sim$ 10 to 50~$μ$m of the crystal, and undergoes a structural phase transition at the Curie temperature $T_C\approx410$ K. The inside phase is however, very different. The lattice inside the crystal maintains a cubic unit cell, while ferroelectric polarization develops below $T_C$. The lattice parameter of the cubic unit cell remains virtually a constant, i.e., much less variations compared to that of a typical relaxor ferroelectric, in a wide temperature range of 15 K to 750 K. On the other hand, broadening of Bragg peaks and change of Bragg profile line-shapes in both longitudinal and transverse directions at $T_C$ clearly indicate a structural phase transition occurring.

Universal Static and Dynamic Properties of the Structural Transition in Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3

The relaxors Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PZN) and Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) have very similar properties based on the dielectric response around the critical temperature $T_{c}$ (defined by the structural transition under the application of an electric field). It has been widely believed that these materials are quite different below $T_{c}$ with the unit cell of PMN remaining cubic while in PZN the low temperature unit cell is rhombohedral in shape. However, this has been clarified by recent high-energy x-ray studies which have shown that PZN is rhombohedral only in the skin while the shape of the unit cell in the bulk is nearly cubic. In this study we have performed both neutron elastic and inelastic scattering to show that the temperature dependence of both the diffuse and phonon scattering in PZN and PMN is very similar. Both compounds show a nearly identical recovery of the soft optic mode and a broadening of the acoustic mode below $T_{c}$. The diffuse scattering in PZN is suggestive of an onset at the high temperature Burns temperature similar to that in PMN. In contrast to PMN, we observe a broadening of the Bragg peaks in both the longitudinal and transverse directions below $T_{c}$. We reconcile this additional broadening, not observed in PMN, in terms of structural inhomogeneity in PZN. Based on the strong similarities between PMN and PZN, we suggest that both materials belong to the same universality class and discuss the relaxor transition in terms of the three-dimensional Heisenberg model with cubic anisotropy in a random field.

Domain structure in the monoclinic Pm phase of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 - PbTiO3 single crystals

The domain structure of (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3- xPbTiO3 single crystals with composition x ~ 0.33 in the range of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) was studied. Based on the analysis of spontaneous strain compatibility and charge of domain walls, we have established the permissible domain arrangements for the ferroelectric phases of different symmetry, which are expected to occur in the range of the MPB. Examination of (001)-oriented unpoled and electrically poled (along the [001] direction) crystal plates in polarizing microscope reveals a monophase state with the domain structure compatible with the structure theoretically predicted for the Mc monoclinic phase (space group Pm), which was recently discovered in the compositions close to the MPB by x-ray and neutron diffraction studies. In the unpoled crystal the 180 deg. walls between the domains whose spontaneous polarization vectors are parallel to the plane of the crystal plate (i.e. a-domains) are observed. The domain structure of the poled crystal is predominantly composed of crystallographically prominent Wf walls parallel to (001) (i.e. the plane of the crystal plate) and inclined S walls parallel to [110] or [1-10] direction. In poled and unpoled samples the optical rotatory polarization effect is found, which is related to the inhomogeneity of the sample resulting from the mixture of domains.

A Universal Phase Diagram for PMN-xPT and PZN-xPT

The phase diagram of the Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 and PbTiO3 solid solution (PMN-xPT) indicates a rhombohedral ground state for x < 0.32. X-ray powder measurements by Dkhil et al. show a rhombohedrally split (222) Bragg peak for PMN-10%PT at 80 K. Remarkably, neutron data taken on a single crystal of the same compound with comparable q-resolution reveal a single resolution-limited (111) peak down to 50 K, and thus no rhombohedral distortion. Our results suggest that the structure of the outer layer of these relaxors differs from that of the bulk, which is nearly cubic, as observed in PZN by Xu et al.

Neutron Scattering Study of Relaxor Ferroelectric (1-x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3

Neutron elastic diffuse scattering experiments performed on Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PZN) and on its solid solution with PbTiO3(PT), known as PZN-xPT, with x=4.5% and 9% around many reflections show that diffuse scattering is observed around reflections with mixed indices in the transverse and diagonal directions only. From the width of the diffuse scattering peak a correlation length is extracted. In PZN, we have reported that the diffuse scattering is more extended in the transverse than in the diagonal directions. In the present work, the results show that the addition of PT leads to a broadening of the diffuse scattering along the diagonal, relative to the transverse directions, indicating a change in the orientation of the polar regions. Also, with the addition of PT, the polar nanoregions condense at a higher temperature above the transition than in pure PZN (> 40 K), due to stronger correlations between the polar regions. Neutron inelastic scattering measurements have also been performed on PZN-xPT. The results show the broadening of the transverse acoustic (TA) phonon mode at a small momentum transfer q upon cooling. We attribute this broadening to the appearance of the polar nanoregions.

Ground State of Relaxor Ferroelectric $Pb(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$

High energy x-ray diffraction measurements on Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PZN) single crystals show that the system does not have a rhombohedral symmetry at room temperature as previously believed. The new phase (X) in the bulk of the crystal gives Bragg peaks similar to that of a nearly cubic lattice with a slight tetragonal distortion. The Bragg profile remains sharp with no evidence of size broadening due to the polar micro crystals (MC). However, in our preliminary studies of the skin, we have found the expected rhombohedral (R) phase as a surface state. On the other hand, studies on an electric-field poled PZN single crystal clearly indicate a rhombohedral phase at room temperature.

Polarized Raman study of the phonon dynamics in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$%_{2/3} $)O$_{3}$ crystal

Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ is one of the simplest representatives of the class of lead relaxors and often serves as a model system for more complicated compounds. In this paper we analyse both polarized and depolarized Raman scattering spectra, measured in the temperature range between 1000 and 100 K, by multiple peak decomposition. Basing on this analysis, we present the picture of transformations in the crystal and the nature of the spectral lines. According to our model, the formation of the Fm3m symmetry in the chemically ordered regions as well as the appearance and freezing of the polar nanoregions are the consequences of the same phenomenon: ion off-centered displacements and their reorientational thermal motion. The lowering temperature progressively limits this motion from eight to four, two and only one site. Raman scattering exists due to the presence of the Fm3m and polar clusters. It is a product of the multiphonon interaction process, mediated by the presence of the dynamic and static disorder.

Development of Ferroelectric Order in Relaxor (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 - xPbTiO3

The microstructure and phase transition in relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) and its solid solution with PbTiO3 (PT), PMN-xPT, remain to be one of the most puzzling issues of solid state science. In the present work we have investigated the evolution of the phase symmetry in PMN-xPT ceramics as a function of temperature (20 K < T < 500 K) and composition (0 <= x <= 0.15) by means of high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Structural analysis based on the experimental data reveals that the substitution of Ti^4+ for the complex B-site (Mg1/3Nb2/3)^4+ ions results in the development of a clean rhombohedral phase at a PT-concentration as low as 5%. The results provide some new insight into the development of the ferroelectric order in PMN-PT, which has been discussed in light of the kinetics of polar nanoregions and the physical models of the relaxor ferroelectrics to illustrate the structural evolution from a relaxor to a ferroelectric state.

Ferroelectric Properties of Monoclinic Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 - PbTiO3 Crystals

A monoclinic phase was recently discovered near the morphotropic phase boundary in several high-performance piezoelectric perovskite solid solutions, but its properties have not been reported. In this paper the dielectric, piezo- and ferroelectric properties of the monoclinic Pm phase in the (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 -xPbTiO3 perovskite system are studied. In a (001)-oriented crystal of composition x=0.33, ferroelectric hysteresis loops with remanent polarization of 23 uC/cm^2 are displayed. In poled monoclinic crystals, under unipolar drive up to 10 kV/cm, the domain walls remain unchanged, the polarization and longitudinal strain change almost linearly, but the piezoelectric response (d33=9x10^(-10) C/N) is much weaker than in the rhombohedral phase of close composition. The relative dielectric permittivity of the Pm phase is also smaller (with a small-signal value of ~ 2500), but the piezoelectric constant (g33 = 3 x10^(-2) m^2/C) and the electromechanical coupling factor (kt = 0.60) are practically the same as in the rhombohedral phase. The properties of the various phases in the range of the morphotropic phase boundary are related to the different rotation paths of the polarization vector induced by the external drive.

Mode-coupling and polar nanoregions in the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

We present a quantitative analysis of the phonon lineshapes obtained by neutron inelastic scattering methods in the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN). Differences in the shapes and apparent positions of the transverse acoustic (TA) and transverse optic (TO) phonon peaks measured in the (300) and (200) Brillouin zones at 690 K are well described by a simple model that couples the TA and soft TO modes in which the primary parameter is the wave vector and temperature-dependent TO linewidth Gamma(q,T). This mode-coupling picture provides a natural explanation for the uniform displacements of the polar nanoregions, discovered by Hirota et al., as the PNR result from the condensation of a soft TO mode that also contains a large acoustic component.

Universal relaxor polarization in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 and related materials

The dielectric permittivity e at frequencies from [10^(-1) -10^(-5)] Hz to 10^5 Hz is studied in perovskite (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 - xPbTiO3 relaxor ferroelectric ceramics of different compositions x = 0.35, 0.25 and 0, which exhibit, below the temperature of the diffuse epsilon'(T) maximum Tm, a tetragonal ferroelectric, a rhombohedral ferroelectric and a nonergodic relaxor phase, respectively. The universal relaxor dispersion previously observed at temperatures near and above Tm in the ceramics of x=0.25, is also found to exist in other compositions. This dispersion is described by the fractional power dependence of the real and imaginary parts of susceptibility on frequency. The real part of the universal relaxor susceptibility chi'U is only a comparatively small fraction of the total permittivity epsilon', but chi"U is the dominant contribution to the losses in a wide frequency-temperature range above Tm. In the high-temperature phase a quadratic divergent temperature behavior is observed for all the three compositions studied. The universal relaxor susceptibility is attributed to the polarization of polar nanoregions, which are inherent in the relaxor ferroelectrics. A microscopic model of this polarization is proposed, according to which the dipole moments of some ('free') unit cells inside polar nanoregion can freely choose several different directions, while the direction of the total moment of the nanoregion remains the same. The ensemble of interacting polar nanoregions is described in terms of a standard spherical model, which predicts the quadratic divergence of susceptibility above the critical temperature, in agreement with the experimental results.

Diffuse Neutron Scattering Study of Relaxor Ferroelectric (1-x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3(PZN-xPT)

Diffuse neutron scattering is a valuable tool to obtain information about the size and orientation of the polar nanoregions that are a characteristic feature of relaxor ferroelectrics. In this paper, we present new diffuse scattering results obtained on Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PZN for short) and (1-x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3(PZN-xPT)single crystals (with x=4.5 and 9%), around various Bragg reflections and along three symmetry directions in the [100]-[011] zone. Diffuse scattering is observed around reflections with mixed indices, (100), (011) and (300), and along transverse and diagonal directions only. No diffuse scattering is found in longitudinal scans. The diffuse scattering peaks can be fitted well with a Lorentzian function, from which a correlation length is extracted. The correlation length increases with decreasing temperatures down to the transition at Tc, first following a Curie-Weiss law, then departing from it and becoming flat at very low temperatures. These results are interpreted in terms of three temperature regions: 1) dynamic polarization fluctuations (i.e. with a finite lifetime) at high temperatures, 2) static polarization reorientations (condensation of polar nanoregions) that can still reorient as a unit (relaxor behavior) at intermediate temperatures and 3) orientational freezing of the polar nanoregions with random strain fields in pure PZN or a structural phase transition in PZN-xPT at low temperatures. The addition of PT leads to a broadening of the diffuse scattering along the diagonal ([111]) relative to the transverse ([100]) direction, indicating a change in the orientation of the polar regions. Also, with the addition of PT, the polar nanoregions condense at a higher temperature above Tc.

Ferroelectric Dynamics in the Perovskite Relaxor PMN

We review results obtained from recent neutron scattering studies of the lead-oxide class of perovskite relaxors PMN and PZN. A ferroelectric soft mode has been identified in PMN at 1100 K that becomes overdamped near 620 K. This is the same temperature at which polar nanoregions (PNR) begin to form, denoted by Td, and suggests that a direct connection exists between the soft mode and the PNR. The appearance of diffuse scattering intensity at Td reported by Naberezhnov et al. lends further support to this picture. At lower temperature the soft mode in PMN reappears close to Tc = 213 K (defined only for E > Ec). These results are provocative because the dynamics below Tc are characteristic of an ordered ferroelectric state, yet they occur in a system that remains cubic on average at all temperatures. We discuss a coupled-mode model that successfully describes these data as well as those from earlier lattice dynamical studies of other perovskites such as BaTiO3.

Phase diagram of the ferroelectric-relaxor (1-x)PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O3-xPbTiO3

Synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction measurements have been performed on unpoled ceramic samples of (1-x)PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O3-xPbTiO3 (PMN-xPT) with 30%<= x<= 39% as a function of temperature around the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), which is the line separating the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases in the phase diagram. The experiments have revealed very interesting features previously unknown in this or related systems. The sharp and well-defined diffraction profiles observed at high and intermediate temperatures in the cubic and tetragonal phases, respectively, are in contrast to the broad features encountered at low temperatures. These peculiar characteristics, which are associated with the monoclinic phase of MC-type previously reported by Kiat et al and Singh et al., can only be interpreted as multiple coexisting structures with MC as the major component. An analysis of the diffraction profiles has allowed us to properly characterize the PMN-xPT phase diagram and to determine the stability region of the monoclinic phase, which extends from x= 31% to x= 37% at 20 K. The complex lansdcape of observed phases points to an energy balance between the different PMN-xPT phases which is intrinsically much more delicate than that of related systems such as PbZr(1-x)TixO3 or (1-x)PbZn(1/3)Nb(1/3)O3-xPbTiO3. These observations are in good accord with an optical study of x= 33% by Xu et al., who observed monoclinic domains with several different polar directions coexisting with rhombohedral domains, in the same single crystal.

Ferroelectric Ordering in the Relaxor Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 as Evidenced by Low-Temperature Phonon Anomalies

Neutron scattering measurements of the lowest-energy TO phonons in the relaxor Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) are reported for 10<=T<=750 K. The soft mode, which is overdamped by the polar nanoregions below the Burns temperature T_d = 620 K, surprisingly recovers below 220 K. The square of the soft mode energy hw0^2 increases linearly with decreasing temperature, and is consistent with the behavior of a ferroelectric soft mode. At 10 K, hw0 reaches 11 meV, the same value observed in ferroelectric Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 at low-T. An unusual broadening of the TA phonon starts at T_d and disappears at 220 K, coincident with the recovery of the TO mode. These dynamics suggest that a well-developed ferroelectric state is established below 220 K.

Monoclinic phase in the relaxor-based piezo-/ ferroelectric Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3})O_3$-PbTiO$_3$ system

A ferroelectric monoclinic phase of space group $Cm$ ($M_A$ type) has been discovered in 0.65Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3})O_3$-0.35PbTiO$_3$ by means of high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction. It appears at room temperature in a single crystal previously poled under an electric field of 43 kV/cm applied along the pseudocubic [001] direction, in the region of the phase diagram around the morphotropic phase boundary between the rhombohedral (R3m) and the tetragonal (P4mm) phases. The monoclinic phase has lattice parameters a = 5.692 A, b = 5.679 A, c = 4.050 A and $β$ = $90.15^{\circ}$, with the b$_m$-axis oriented along the pseudo-cubic [110] direction . It is similar to the monoclinic phase observed in PbZr$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_3$, but different from that recently found in Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3})O_3$-PbTiO$_3$, which is of space group $Pm$ ($M_C$ type).

Neutron Diffuse Scattering from Polar Nanoregions in the Relaxor Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

We have studied the neutron diffuse scattering in the relaxor PMN. The diffuse scattering appears around the Burns temperature (~620K), indicating its origin from the polar nanoregions (PNR). While the relative diffuse intensities are consistent with previous reports, they are entirely different from those of the lowest-energy TO phonon. Because of that, it has been considered that this TO mode could not be the ferroelectric soft mode. Recently, a neutron scattering study has unambiguously shown that the TO mode does soften on cooling. If the diffuse scattering in PMN originates from the soft mode condensation, then the atomic displacements must satisfy the center of mass condition. But, the atomic displacements determined from diffuse scattering intensities do not fulfill this condition. To resolve this contradiction, we propose a simple model in which the total atomic displacement consists of two components: $δ_{CM}$ is created by the soft mode condensation, satisfying the center of mass condition, and, $δ_{shift}$ represents a uniform displacement of the PNR along their polar direction relative to the surrounding (unpolarized) cubic matrix. Within this framework, we can successfully describe the neutron diffuse scattering intensities observed in PMN.

Soft Mode Dynamics Above and Below the Burns Temperature in the Relaxor Pb(Mg_1/3Nb_2/3)O_3

We report neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the lowest-energy transverse optic (TO) phonon branch in the relaxor Pb(Mg_1/3Nb_2/3)O_3 from 400 to 1100 K. Far above the Burns temperature T_d ~ 620 K we observe well-defined propagating TO modes at all wave vectors q, and a zone center TO mode that softens in a manner consistent with that of a ferroelectric soft mode. Below T_d the zone center TO mode is overdamped. This damping extends up to, but not above, the waterfall wave vector q_wf, which is a measure of the average size of the PNR.
