Anomalous high energy dispersion in photoemission spectra from insulating cuprates

Angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopic measurements have been performed on an insulating cuprate Ca_2CuO_2Cl_2. High resolution data taken along the Γto (pi,pi) cut show an additional dispersive feature that merges with the known dispersion of the lowest binding energy feature, which follows the usual strongly renormalized dispersion of ~0.35 eV. This higher energy part reveals a dispersion that is very close to the unrenormalized band predicted by band theory. A transfer of spectral weight from the low energy feature to the high energy feature is observed as the Γpoint is approached. By comparing with theoretical calculations the high energy feature observed here demonstrates that the incoherent portion of the spectral function has significant structure in momentum space due to the presence of various energy scales.

Doping Evolution of the Underlying Fermi Surface in La2-xSrxCuO4

We have performed a systematic doping dependent study of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) (0.03$\leq x \leq$0.3) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In the entire doping range, the underlying ``Fermi surface" determined from the low energy spectral weight approximately satisfies Luttinger's theorem, even down to the lightly-doped region. This is in strong contrast to the result on Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_x$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC), which shows a strong deviation from Luttinger's theorem. The differences between LSCO and Na-CCOC are correlated with the different behaviors of the chemical potential shift and spectral weight transfer induced by hole doping.

Nodal quasiparticle in pseudogapped colossal magnetoresistive manganites

A characteristic feature of the copper oxide high-temperature superconductors is the dichotomy between the electronic excitations along the nodal (diagonal) and antinodal (parallel to the Cu-O bonds) directions in momentum space, generally assumed to be linked to the "d-wave" symmetry of the superconducting state. Angle-resolved photoemission measurements in the superconducting state have revealed a quasiparticle spectrum with a d-wave gap structure that exhibits a maximum along the antinodal direction and vanishes along the nodal direction. Subsequent measurements have shown that, at low doping levels, this gap structure persists even in the high-temperature metallic state, although the nodal points of the superconducting state spread out in finite "Fermi arcs". This is the so-called pseudogap phase, and it has been assumed that it is closely linked to the superconducting state, either by assigning it to fluctuating superconductivity or by invoking orders which are natural competitors of d-wave superconductors. Here we report experimental evidence that a very similar pseudogap state with a nodal-antinodal dichotomous character exists in a system that is markedly different from a superconductor: the ferromagnetic metallic groundstate of the colossal magnetoresistive bilayer manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7. Our findings therefore cast doubt on the assumption that the pseudogap state in the copper oxides and the nodal-antinodal dichotomy are hallmarks of the superconductivity state.

Spectroscopic abundance analysis of dwarfs in young open cluster IC 4665

We report a detailed spectroscopic abundance analysis for a sample of 18 F-K dwarfs of the young open cluster IC 4665. Stellar parameters and element abundances of Li, O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe and Ni have been derived using the spectroscopic synthesis tool SME (Spectroscopy Made Easy). Within the measurement uncertainties the iron abundance is uniform with a standard deviation of 0.04 dex. No correlation is found between the iron abundance and the mass of the stellar convective zone, and between the Li abundance and the Fe abundance. In other words, our results do not reveal any signature of accretion and therefore do not support the scenario that stars with planets (SWPs) acquire their on the average higher metallicity compared to field stars via accretion of metal-rich planetary material. Instead the higher metallicity of SWPs may simply reflect the fact that planet formation is more efficient in high metallicity environs. However, since that many details of the planet system formation processes remain poorly understood, further studies are needed for a final settlement of the problem of the high metallicity of SWPs. The standard deviation of [Fe/H] deduced from our observations, taken as an upper limit on the metallicity dispersion amongst the IC 4665 member stars, has been used to constrain proto-planetary disk evolution, terrestrial and giant planets formation and evolution processes. Our results do not support the possibility that the migration of gas giants and the circularization of terrestrial planets' orbits are regulated by their interaction with a residual population of planetesimals and dust particles.

Multiple Bosonic Mode Coupling in Electron Self-Energy of (La_2-xSr_x)CuO_4

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data along the (0,0)-($π$,$π$) nodal direction with significantly improved statistics reveal fine structure in the electron self-energy of the underdoped (La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$)CuO$_4$ samples in the normal state. Fine structure at energies of (40$\sim$46) meV and (58$\sim$63)meV, and possible fine structure at energies of (23$\sim$29)meV and (75$\sim$85)meV, have been identified. These observations indicate that, in LSCO, more than one bosonic modes are involved in the coupling with electrons.

Direct observation of the mass renormalization in SrVO$_3$ by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the three-dimensional perovskite-type SrVO$_3$. Observed spectral weight distribution of the coherent part in the momentum space shows cylindrical Fermi surfaces consisting of the V 3$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals as predicted by local-density-approximation (LDA) band-structure calculation. The observed energy dispersion shows a moderately enhanced effective mass compared to the LDA results, corresponding to the effective mass enhancement seen in the thermodynamic properties. Contributions from the bulk and surface electronic structures to the observed spectra are discussed based on model calculations.

Polaronic behavior of undoped high-Tc cuprates

We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data on undoped La2CuO4, indicating polaronic coupling between bosons and charge carriers. Using a shell model, we calculate the electron-phonon coupling and find that it is strong enough to give polarons. We develop an efficient method for calculating ARPES spectra in undoped systems. Using the calculated couplings, we find the width of the phonon side band in good agreement with experiment. We analyze reasons for the observed dependence of the width on the binding energy.

Normal State Spectral Lineshapes of Nodal Quasiparticles in Single Layer Bi2201 Superconductor

A detailed study of the normal state photoemission lineshapes and quasiparticle dispersion for the single layer Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) superconductor is presented. We report the first experimental evidence of a double peak structure and a dip of spectral intensity in the energy distribution curves (EDCs) along the nodal direction. The double peak structure is well identified in the normal state, up to ten times the critical temperature. As a result of the same self-energy effect, a strong mass renormalization of the quasiparticle dispersion, i.e. kink, and an increase of the quasiparticle lifetime in the normal state are also observed. Our results provide unambiguous evidence on the existence of bosonic excitation in the normal state, and support a picture where nodal quasiparticles are strongly coupled to the lattice.

Space Charge Effect and Mirror Charge Effect in Photoemission Spectroscopy

We report the observation and systematic investigation of the space charge effect and mirror charge effect in photoemission spectroscopy. When pulsed light is incident on a sample, the photoemitted electrons experience energy redistribution after escaping from the surface because of the Coulomb interaction between them (space charge effect) and between photoemitted electrons and the distribution of mirror charges in the sample (mirror charge effect). These combined Coulomb interaction effects give rise to an energy shift and a broadening which can be on the order of 10 meV for a typical third-generation synchrotron light source. This value is comparable to many fundamental physical parameters actively studied by photoemission spectroscopy and should be taken seriously in interpreting photoemission data and in designing next generation experiments.

Anisotropic Electron-Phonon Coupling Uncovered By Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Recently there has been an accumulation of experimental evidence in the high temperature superconductors suggesting the relevance of electron-phonon coupling in these materials. These findings challenge some well-held beliefs of what electron-phonon interactions can and cannot do. In this article we review evidence primarily from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements which point out the importance of electronic coupling to certain phonon modes in the cuprates.

Anisotropic electron-phonon interaction in the cuprates

We explore manifestations of electron-phonon coupling on the electron spectral function for two phonon modes in the cuprates exhibiting strong renormalizations with temperature and doping. Applying simple symmetry considerations and kinematic constraints, we find that the out-of-plane, out-of-phase O buckling mode (B_1g) involves small momentum transfers and couples strongly to electronic states near the anti-node while the in-plane Cu-O breathing modes involve large momentum transfers and couples strongly to nodal electronic states. Band renormalization effects are found to be strongest in the superconducting state near the anti-node, in full agreement with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data.

Missing Quasiparticles and the Chemical Potential Puzzle in the Doping Evolution of the Cuprate Superconductors

The evolution of Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$ from Mott insulator to superconductor was studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By measuring both the excitations near the Fermi energy as well as non-bonding states, we tracked the doping dependence of the electronic structure and the chemical potential with unprecedented precision. Our work reveals failures in the conventional quasiparticle theory, including the broad lineshapes of the insulator and the apparently paradoxical shift of the chemical potential within the Mott gap. To resolve this, we develop a model where the quasiparticle is vanishingly small at half filling and grows upon doping, allowing us to unify properties such as the dispersion and Fermi wavevector with the behavior of the chemical potential.

Coupling Of The B1g Phonon To The Anti-Nodal Electronic States of Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O(8+delta)

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on optimally doped Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O(8+delta) uncovers a coupling of the electronic bands to a 40 meV mode in an extended k-space region away from the nodal direction, leading to a new interpretation of the strong renormalization of the electronic structure seen in Bi2212. Phenomenological agreements with neutron and Raman experiments suggest that this mode is the B1g oxygen bond-buckling phonon. A theoretical calculation based on this assignment reproduces the electronic renormalization seen in the data.

Persistence of an Energy Scale in Over-Doped High-Tc Superconductors

Citing the disappearance of a sharp peak in the electron self-energy, extracted from optics and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments in deeply over-doped copper-oxide superconductors with Tc of 55-60K, Hwang, Timusk et al. argue that sharp modes, be they phononic or magnetic in origin, are not important for superconductivity in the cuprates. If true, this would have been an important progress. We show, however, their conclusions are unfounded because of the insensitivity of the optics experiment in studying strongly anisotropic material like the cuprates, and a misrepresentation of existing ARPES data. In an added note, we refute the claim by Valla, Timusk et. al. that the doping level of the data presented in the first part of this comment is lower than reported.

The Dichotomy between Nodal and Antinodal Quasiparticles in Underdoped (La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$)CuO$_4$ Superconductors

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on underdoped (La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$)CuO$_4$ system show that, at energies below 70 meV, the quasiparticle peak is well defined around the ($π$/2,$π$/2) nodal region and disappears rather abruptly when the momentum is changed from the nodal point to the ($π$,0) antinodal point along the underlying ``Fermi surface''. It indicates that there is an extra low energy scattering mechanism acting upon the antinodal quasiparticles. We propose that this mechanism is the scattering of quasiparticles across the nearly parallel segments of the Fermi surface near the antinodes.

Direct extraction of the Eliashberg function for electron-phonon coupling: A case study of Be(1010)

We propose a systematic procedure to directly extract the Eliashberg function for electron-phonon coupling from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission data. The procedure is successfully applied to the Be(1010) surface, providing new insights to electron-phonon coupling at this surface. The method is shown to be robust against imperfections in experimental data and suitable for wider applications.

Thermodynamic and transport properties of underdoped cuprates from ARPES data

he relationship between photoemission spectra of high-$T_{\textrm{c}}$ cuprates and their thermodynamic and transport properties are discussed. The doping dependence of the expected quasi-particle density at the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm{F}$) are compared with the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ and that of the spectral weight at $E_\mathrm{F}$ with the in-plane and out-of-plane superfluid density. We have estimated the electrical resistivity of underdoped cuprates from the momentum distribution curve (MDC) at $E_\mathrm{F}$ in the nodal direction. The temperature dependence of the MDC width is also consistent with that of the electrical resistivity.
