Band-dependent normal-state coherence in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$: Evidence from Nernst effect and thermopower measurements

We present the first measurement on Nernst effect in the normal state of odd-parity, spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. Below 100 K, the Nernst signal was found to be negative, large, and, as a function of magnetic field, nonlinear. Its magnitude increases with the decreasing temperature until reaching a maximum around $T^*$ $\approx$ 20 - 25 K, below which it starts to decrease linearly as a function of temperature. The large value of the Nernst signal appears to be related to the multiband nature of the normal state and the nonlinearity to band-dependent magnetic fluctuation in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. We argue that the sharp decrease in Nernst signal below $T^*$ is due to the suppression of quasiparticle scattering and the emergence of band-dependent coherence in the normal state. The observation of a sharp kink in the temperature dependent thermopower around $T^*$ and a sharp drop of Hall angle at low temperatures provide additional support to this picture.

Nernst effect of the new iron-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs

We report the first Nernst effect measurement on the new iron-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs $(x=0.1)$. In the normal state, the Nernst signal is negative and very small. Below $T_{c}$ a large positive peak caused by vortex motion is observed. The flux flowing regime is quite large compared to conventional type-II superconductors. However, a clear deviation of the Nernst signal from normal state background and an anomalous depression of off-diagonal thermoelectric current in the normal state between $T_{c}$ and 50 K are observed. We propose that this anomaly in the normal state Nernst effect could correlate with the SDW fluctuations.

Competing magnetic fluctuations in Sr3Ru2O7 probed by Ti doping

We report the effect of nonmagnetic Ti4+ impurities on the electronic and magnetic properties of Sr3Ru2O7. Small amounts of Ti suppress the characteristic peak in magnetic susceptibility near 16 K and result in a sharp upturn in specific heat. The metamagnetic quantum phase transition and related anomalous features are quickly smeared out by small amounts of Ti. These results provide strong evidence for the existence of competing magnetic fluctuations in the ground state of Sr3Ru2O7. Ti doping suppresses the low temperature antiferromagnetic interactions that arise from Fermi surface nesting, leaving the system in a state dominated by ferromagnetic fluctuations.

Nernst Effect and Superconducting Fluctuations in Zn-doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$

We report the measurements of in-plane resistivity, Hall effect, and Nernst effect in Zn doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ epitaxial thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. The pseudogap temperature, $T^*$, determined from the temperature dependence of resistivity, does not change significantly with Zn doping. Meanwhile the onset temperature ($T^ν$) of anomalous Nernst signal above $T_{c0}$, which is interpreted as evidence for vortex-like excitations, decreases sharply as the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c0}$ does. A significant decrease in the maximum of vortex Nernst signal in mixed state is also observed, which is consistent with the scenario that Zn impurities cause a decrease in the superfluid density and therefore suppress the superconductivity. The phase diagram of $T^*$, $T^ν$, and $T_{c0}$ versus Zn content is presented and discussed.

Preparation and transport properties of non-hydrated Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$ single crystals

Single crystals of Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$ were obtained through a flux method followed by de-intercalation of sodium. The Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$ samples were found to be vulnerable to water in the air and a hydration process in which H$_2$O molecules fill oxygen vacancies in CoO$_2$ layers is suggested to be responsible for the unusual vulnerability to water. The transport properties, including resistivity (\emph{$ρ$}), thermopower (\emph{S}) and Hall coefficient (\emph{R$_H$}), were studied in a temperature range of 5-300 K. The compound shows a weak localization of carriers just below 200 K and Co$^{3+}$-Co$^{4+}$ charge ordering at about 30 K, a relatively lower temperature than previously reported. The results seem to be quite different from those previously reported for this system [Foo et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 (2004) 247001]. Possible mechanism underlying this kind of inconsistency is discussed.

Tunneling spectroscopy of Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$ and Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$$\cdot$ yH$_2$O

The single electron tunneling spectroscopy on superconductor Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$$\cdot$ yH$_2$O and its starting compound Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$ has been studied with point-contact method. The spectra of Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$ have two types of distinct shapes at different random locations, this is attributed to the non-uniformly distributed sodium escaped from the inner part of the sample. While all the measured spectra of the superconducting samples Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$$\cdot$ yH$_2$O have a good spatial reproducibility, and show a remarkable zero bias conductance depression appearing below an onset temperature which associates very well with the resistance upturn at around 45 K. The latter behavior resembles in some way the pseudogap feature in high-T$_c$ cuprate uperconductors.

Strictly In-Plane Vortex-like Excitations in Pseudogap Region of Underdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ Single Crystals

Nernst effect has been measured for an underdoped and an optimally doped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ single crystal with the magnetic field applied along different directions. For both samples, when $H \|$ c, a significant Nernst voltage appears above $T_c$ and keeps measurable up to a high temperature (100 K) as reported by Xu et al.[ Nature 406, 486(2000) ]. However, when $H \|$ a-b plane the Nernst signal drops below the noise level quickly above $T_c$ for the underdoped sample. Moreover, the in-plane Nernst data with field at different angles shows a nice scaling behavior with the c-axis component of the field. All these give strong indication for strictly in-plane vortex-like excitations in pseudo-gap region.

The high-field phase diagram of the cuprates derived from the Nernst effect

Measurements of the Nernst signal in the vortex-liquid state of the cuprates to high fields (33 T) reveal that vorticity extends to very high fields even close to the zero-field critical temperature $T_{c0}$. In overdoped $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ (LSCO) we show that the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ curve does not end at $T_{c0}$, but at a much higher temperature. These results imply that $T_{c0}$ corresponds to a loss in phase rigidity rather than a vanishing of the pairing amplitude. An intermediate field $H^*(T)\ll H_{c2}(T)$ is shown to be the field scale for the flux-flow resistivity.

The onset of the vortex-like Nernst signal above Tc in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 and Bi_2Sr_{2-y}La_yCuO_6

The diffusion of vortices down a thermal gradient produces a Josephson signal which is detected as the vortex Nernst effect. In a recent report, Xu et al., Nature 406, 486 (2000), an enhanced Nernst signal identified with vortex-like excitations was observed in a series of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) crystals at temperatures 50-100 K above T_c. To pin down the onset temperature T_ν of the vortex-like signal in the lightly doped regime (0.03 < x < 0.07), we have re-analyzed in detail the carrier contribution to the Nernst signal. By supplementing new Nernst measurements with thermopower and Hall-angle data, we isolate the off-diagonal Peltier conductivity α_{xy} and show that its profile provides an objective determination of T_ν. With the new results, we revise the phase diagram for the fluctuation regime in LSCO to accomodate the lightly doped regime. In the cuprate Bi_2Sr_{2-y}La_yCuO_6, we find that the carrier contribution is virtually negligible for y in the range 0.4-0.6. The evidence for an extended temperature interval with vortex-like excitations is even stronger in this system. Finally, we discuss how T_ν relates to the pseudogap temperature T* and the implications of strong fluctuations between the pseudogap state and the d-wave superconducting state.

Determining the Wiedemann-Franz ratio from the thermal Hall conductivity: Application to Cu and YBa_2Cu_3O_6.95

The Wiedemann-Franz (WF) ratio compares the thermal and electrical conductivities in a metal. We describe a new way to determine its value, based on the thermal Hall conductivity. The technique is applied to copper and to untwinned YBaCuO. In the latter, we uncover a T-linear dependence and suppression of the Hall-channel WF ratio. We discuss the implications of this suppressions. The general suppression of the WF ratio in systems with predominant electron-electron scattering is discussed.

Anisotropic effect of field on the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transition in the striped cuprate (La,Nd)_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

The Nd-doped cuprate La_{2-y-x}Nd_ySr_xCuO_4 displays a first-order phase transition at T_d (= 74 K for x=0.10, y = 0.60) to a low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase. A magnetic field H applied || the a-axis leads to an increase in T_d, whereas T_d is decreased when H || c. These effects show that magnetic ordering involving both Nd and Cu spins plays a key role in driving the LTO-LTT transition. Related anisotropic effects are observed in the uniform susceptibility and the in-plane magnetoresistance.

Effect of the pseudogap on the Hall conductivity in underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_6+x

In underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x (YBCO) with x = 6.63, the opening of the pseudogap at T^* ~ 160 K has a strong effect on the Hall angle tan(theta). While the Hall response is significantly reduced, the diagonal current is relatively unaffected. The Hall conductivity suppression continues deep into the flux-flow state (from T_c to 40 K), as an anomalous suppression of the vortex Hall current.

Quasiparticle thermal Hall angle and magnetoconductance in YBa_2Cu_3O_x

We present a way to extract the quasiparticle (qp) thermal conductivity Kappa_e and mean-free-path in YBa_2Cu_3O_x, using the thermal Hall effect and the magnetoconductance of Kappa_e. The results are very consistent with heat capacity experiments. Moreover, we find a simple relation between the thermal Hall angle Theta_Q and the H-dependence of Kappa_e, as well as numerical equality between Theta_Q and the electrical Hall angle. The findings also reveal an anomalously anisotropic scattering process in the normal state.

Thermal Conductivity as a Probe of Quasi-Particles in the Cuprates

In underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x (x=6.63), the low-T thermal conductivity Kappa_xx varies steeply with field B at small B, and saturates to a nearly field-independent value at high fields. The simple expression [1+p(T)|B|]^(-1) provides an excellent fit to Kappa_xx(B) over a wide range of fields. From the fit, we extract the zero-field mean-free-path, and the low temperature behavior of the QP current. The procedure also allows the QP Hall angle Theta_QP to be obtained. We find that Theta_QP falls on the 1/T^2 curve extrapolated from the electrical Hall angle above Tc. Moreover, it shares the same T dependence as the field scale p(T) extracted from Kappa_xx. We discuss implications of these results.
