EBS and in-beam $\gamma$-ray investigation of FCVA-prepared Cr$_2$O$_3$ targets for low-energy $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion experiments

The Cr$_2$O$_3$ solid target for low-energy $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion experiments was fabricated using filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) deposition. Its composition, oxygen areal density and impurity content were characterized by elastic backscattering spectrometry (EBS), and the impurity-induced background contributions were investigated by in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. EBS results indicate that the Cr$_2$O$_3$ film exhibits good stoichiometry and uniformity, with $^{16}$O areal densities ranging from $(3.24-3.25)\times10^{17}$ atoms/cm$^2$. The EBS analysis reveals a carbon atomic fraction of approximately 1.25-1.29\% in the Cr$_2$O$_3$ layer, while a large amount of carbon impurities are also identified on the surface of Cr substrate. In-beam $\gamma$-ray spectra reveal prominent transitions associated with $^{27}$Al and $^{24}$Mg at 844, 1015, and 1369 keV, mainly originating from $^{12}$C+$^{16}$O fusion reactions induced by carbon impurities under $^{16}$O irradiation. Meanwhile, characteristic $\gamma$-rays emissions from evaporation channels of the $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O reaction, including $^{31}$S, $^{31}$P, and $^{28}$Si, were also observed and can be used to extract the $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion cross sections. This work provides an experimental basis for the development of high-purity oxide targets and the optimization of target configurations for future low-background $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion cross section measurements.

Enhanced $S$-factor for the $^{14}$N$(p,\gamma)^{15}$O reaction and its impact on the solar composition problem

The solar composition problem has puzzled astrophysicists for more than 20 years. Recent measurements of carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) neutrinos by the Borexino experiment show a $\sim2\sigma$ tension with the "low-metallicity" determinations. $^{14}$N$(p,\gamma)^{15}$O, the slowest reaction in the CNO cycle, plays a crucial role in the standard solar model (SSM) calculations of CNO neutrino fluxes. Here we report a direct measurement of the $^{14}$N$(p,\gamma)^{15}$O reaction, in which $S$-factors for all transitions were simultaneously determined in the energy range of $E_p=110-260$ keV for the first time. Our results resolve previous discrepancies in the ground-state transition, yielding a zero-energy $S$-factor $S_{114}(0) = 1.92\pm0.08$ keV b which is 14% higher than the $1.68\pm0.14$ keV b recommended in Solar Fusion III (SF-III). With our $S_{114}$ values, the SSM B23-GS98, and the latest global analysis of solar neutrino measurements, the C and N photospheric abundance determined by the Borexino experiment is updated to $N_{\mathrm{CN}}=({4.45}^{+0.69}_{-0.61})\times10^{-4}$. This new $N_{\mathrm{CN}}$ value agrees well with latest "high-metallicity" composition, however, is also consistent with the "low-metallicity" determination within $\sim 1\sigma$ C.L., indicating that the solar metallicity problem remains an open question. In addition, the significant reduction in the uncertainty of $S_{114}$ paves the way for the precise determination of the CN abundance in future large-volume solar neutrino measurements.

Deep underground laboratory measurement of $^{13}$C($\alpha$,$n$)$^{16}$O in the Gamow windows of the $s$- and $i$-processes

The $^{13}$C($\alpha$,$n$)$^{16}$O reaction is the main neutron source for the slow-neutron-capture (s-) process in Asymptotic Giant Branch stars and for the intermediate (i-) process. Direct measurements at astrophysical energies in above-ground laboratories are hindered by the extremely small cross sections and vast cosmic-ray induced background. We performed the first consistent direct measurement in the range of $E_{\rm c.m.}=$0.24 MeV to 1.9 MeV using the accelerators at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) and Sichuan University. Our measurement covers almost the entire i-process Gamow window in which the large uncertainty of the previous experiments has been reduced from 60\% down to 15\%, eliminates the large systematic uncertainty in the extrapolation arising from the inconsistency of existing data sets, and provides a more reliable reaction rate for the studies of the s- and i-processes along with the first direct determination of the alpha strength for the near-threshold state.

Joint User Scheduling and Beamforming Design for Multiuser MISO Downlink Systems

In multiuser communication systems, user scheduling and beamforming (US-BF) design are two fundamental problems that are usually studied separately in the existing literature. In this work, we focus on the joint US-BF design with the goal of maximizing the set cardinality of scheduled users, which is computationally challenging due to the non-convex objective function and the coupled constraints with discrete-continuous variables. To tackle these difficulties, a successive convex approximation based US-BF (SCA-USBF) optimization algorithm is firstly proposed. Then, inspired by wireless intelligent communication, a graph neural network based joint US-BF (J-USBF) learning algorithm is developed by combining the joint US and power allocation network model with the BF analytical solution. The effectiveness of SCA-USBF and J-USBF is verified by various numerical results, the latter achieves close performance and higher computational efficiency. Furthermore, the proposed J-USBF also enjoys the generalizability in dynamic wireless network scenarios.

Scattering and Recombination of Two Triplet Excitons in polymer light-emitting diodes

The scattering and recombination processes between two triplet excitons in conjugated polymers are investigated by using a nonadiabatic evolution method, based on an extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model including interchain interactions. Due to the interchain coupling, the electron and/or hole in the two triplet excitons can exchange. The results show that the recombination induces the formation of singlet excitons, excited polarons and biexcitons. Moreover, we also find the yields of these products, which can contribute to the emission, increase with the interchain coupling strength, in good agreement with results from experiments.
