Anharmonic O(N) oscillator model in next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion

An extended Holstein-Primakoff mapping which incorporates both single- and double boson mappings is used in the context of O(N+1) anharmonic oscillator with the global symmetry broken down to O(N) to study the next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion. It is shown that the Goldstone theorem is obeyed to that order and that the Ward identity is satisfied.

Dropping Sigma-Meson Mass and In-Medium Pion-Pion Correlations

The influence of a dropping sigma-meson mass on previously calculated in-medium pion-pion correlations in the J=I=0 (sigma-meson) channel is investigated. It is found that the invariant-mass distribution around the vacuum threshold experiences a further strong enhancement over and above the standard many-body effects. The relevance of this result for the theoretical interpretation of this result for the theoretical interpretation of recent A(pi-2 pi)X data is pointed out.

Dropping Sigma-Meson Mass and In-Medium S-Wave pion-pion Correlations

The influence of a dropping sigma-meson mass on previously calculated in-medium pion-pion correlations in the J=I=0 (sigma-meson) channel is investigated. It is found that the invariant-mass distribution around the vacuum threshold experiences a further strong enhancement with respect to standard many-body effects. The relevance of this result for the explanation of recent $A(π,2π)X$ data is pointed out.

Symmetry conserving non-perturbative s-wave renormalization of the pion in hot and baryon dense medium

A non-perturbative s-wave renormalization of the pion in a hot and baryon rich medium is presented. This approach proceeds via a mapping of the canonical pion into the axial Noether's charge. The mapping was made dynamical in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov random phase approximation (HFB-RPA). It is shown that this approach, while order mixing, is still symmetry conserving both in the baryon free and baryon rich sectors, at zero as well as finite temperature. The systematic character of this approach is emphasized and it is particularly argued that it may constitute an interesting alternative for the non-perturbative assessment of the nuclear matter saturation properties.

Moments of event observable distributions and many-body correlations

We investigate event-by-event fluctuations for ensembles with non-fixed multiplicity. Moments of event observable distributions, like total energy distribution, total transverse momentum distribution, etc, are shown to be related to the multi-body correlations present in the system. For classical systems, these moments reduce in the absence of any correlations to the moments of particle inclusive momentum distribution. As a consequence, a zero value for the recently introduced $Φ$-variable is shown to indicate the vanishing of two-body correlations from one part, and of correlations between multiplicity and momentum distributions from the other part. It is often misunderstood as a measure of the degree of equilibration in the system.

The Octet of Goldstone-Bosons in the SU(3) Linear sigma Model in the QRPA

A symmetry conserving, non-perturbative treatment based on a variational squeezed vacuum state in conjunction with a well-defined class of RPA fluctuations is applied to the SU(3) linear-sigma-model. It is shown that the Goldstone theorem holds exactly both at zero and finite temperature. The approach represents a systematic procedure which avoids problems of the Gaussian Functional with the symmetries.

Enhancement of $πA \to ππA$ Threshold Cross Sections by In-Medium $ππ$ Final State Interactions

We address the problem of pion production in low energy $π$-nucleus collisions. For the production mechanism we assume a simple model consisting of a coherent sum of single pion exchange and the excitation---followed by the decay into two pions and a nucleon---of the $N^*(1440)$ resonance. The production amplitude is modified by the final state interaction between the pions calculated using the chirally improved Jülich meson exchange model including the polarization of the nuclear medium by the pions. The model reproduces well the experimentally observed $πA \to ππA$ cross sections, especially the enhancement with increasing $A$ of the $π^+π^-$ mass distribution in the threshold region.

In-Medium $π-π$ Correlations in the '$σ$-Meson'-Channel

The present status of the in-medium invariant $π-π$ mass distribution in the sigma-meson channel around the threshold is reviewed from the theory side and contrasted with recent experiments on $(π,2π)$ knock-out reactions. A preliminary investigation indicates that the strongly target-mass dependent invariant mass enhancement of the two pions can be explained theoretically. A more refined reaction theory is needed to confirm this result. In the theoretical description, based on the linear sigma model, emphasis is put on constraints from chiral symmetry.

The Linear Sigma-Model in the 1/N-Expansion via Dynamical Boson Mappings and Applications to $ππ$-Scattering

We present a non-perturbative method for the study of the O(N+1)-version of the linear sigma-model. Using boson-mapping techniques, in close analogy to those well-known for fermionic systems, we obtain a systematic 1/N-expansion for the Hamiltonian which is symmetry-conserving order by order. The leading order for the Hamiltonian is evaluated explicitly and we apply the method to $ππ$-scattering, in deriving the T-matrix to leading order.

A Non-Perturbative Treatment of the Pion in the Linear Sigma-Model

Using a non-perturbative method based on the selfconsistent Quasi-particle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA) we describe the properties of the pion in the linear $σ$-model. It is found that the pion is massless in the chiral limit, both at zero- and finite temperature, in accordance with Goldstone's theorem.

S-Wave Pion-Pion Correlations in Dense Nuclear Matter

The s-wave correlated $π$-$π$ strength distribution in cold nuclear matter is investigated. The in-medium single pions are renormalized by means of the usual p-wave couplings to nucleons and $Δ$'s. Two groups of models for the $π$-$π$ interaction are studied. The first one uses phenomenological models which reproduce the phase shifts but do not respect the soft-pion theorems. With increasing density a strong accumulation of strength in the subhreshold region is observed. Slightly above saturation density there even occurs an instability with respect to s-wave $π$-$π$ pair condensation. These effects are strongly moderated or disappear altogether if constraints from chiral symmetry are built into the $π$-$π$ interaction.
