Truncated Hilbert space approach to the 2d $ϕ^{4}$ theory

We apply the massive analogue of the truncated conformal space approach to study the two dimensional $ϕ^{4}$ theory in finite volume. We focus on the broken phase and determine the finite size spectrum of the model numerically. We interpret the results in terms of the Bethe-Yang spectrum, from which we extract the infinite volume masses and scattering matrices for various couplings. We compare these results against semiclassical analysis and perturbation theory. We also analyze the critical point of the model and confirm that it is in the Ising universality class.

Explicit boundary form factors: the scaling Lee-Yang model

We provide explicit expressions for boundary form factors in the boundary scaling Lee-Yang model for operators with the mildest ultraviolet behavior for all integrable boundary conditions. The form factors of the boundary stress tensor take a determinant form, while the form factors of the boundary primary field contain additional explicit polynomials.

Finite volume form factors in the presence of integrable defects

We developed the theory of finite volume form factors in the presence of integrable defects. These finite volume form factors are expressed in terms of the infinite volume form factors and the finite volume density of states and incorporate all polynomial corrections in the inverse of the volume. We tested our results, in the defect Lee-Yang model, against numerical data obtained by truncated conformal space approach (TCSA), which we improved by renormalization group methods adopted to the defect case. To perform these checks we determined the infinite volume defect form factors in the Lee-Yang model exactly, including their vacuum expectation values. We used these data to calculate the two point functions, which we compared, at short distance, to defect CFT. We also derived explicit expressions for the exact finite volume one point functions, which we checked numerically. In all of these comparisons excellent agreement was found.

A2 Toda theory in reduced WZNW framework and the representations of the W algebra

Using the reduced WZNW formulation we analyse the classical $W$ orbit content of the space of classical solutions of the $A_2$ Toda theory. We define the quantized Toda field as a periodic primary field of the $W$ algebra satisfying the quantized equations of motion. We show that this local operator can be constructed consistently only in a Hilbert space consisting of the representations corresponding to the minimal models of the $W$ algebra.

Scaling function in AdS/CFT from the O(6) sigma model

Asymptotic behavior of the anomalous dimensions of Wilson operators with high spin and twist is governed in planar N=4 SYM theory by the scaling function which coincides at strong coupling with the energy density of a two-dimensional bosonic O(6) sigma model. We calculate this function by combining the two-loop correction to the energy density for the O(n) model with two-loop correction to the mass gap determined by the all-loop Bethe ansatz in N=4 SYM theory. The result is in agreement with the prediction coming from the thermodynamical limit of the quantum string Bethe ansatz equations, but disagrees with the two-loop stringy corrections to the folded spinning string solution.

Casimir effect in the boundary state formalism

Casimir effect in the planar setting is described using the boundary state formalism, for general partially reflecting boundaries. It is expressed in terms of the low-energy degrees of freedom, which provides a large distance expansion valid for general interacting field theories provided there is a non-vanishing mass gap. The expansion is written in terms of the scattering amplitudes, and needs no ultraviolet renormalization. We also discuss the case when the quantum field has a nontrivial vacuum configuration.

Solving topological defects via fusion

Integrable defects in two-dimensional integrable models are purely transmitting thus topological. By fusing them to integrable boundaries new integrable boundary conditions can be generated, and, from the comparison of the two solved boundary theories, explicit solutions of defect models can be extracted. This idea is used to determine the transmission factors and defect energies of topological defects in sinh-Gordon and Lee-Yang models. The transmission factors are checked in Lagrangian perturbation theory in the sinh-Gordon case, while the defect energies are checked against defect thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations derived to describe the ground-state energy of diagonal defect systems on a cylinder. Defect bootstrap equations are also analyzed and are closed by determining the spectrum of defect bound-states in the Lee-Yang model.

Sinh-Gordon Boundary TBA and Boundary Liouville Reflection Amplitude

The ground state energy of the sinh-Gordon model defined on the strip is studied using the boundary thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equation. Its ultraviolet (small width of the strip) behavior is compared with the one obtained from the boundary Liouville reflection amplitude. The results are in perfect agreement in the allowable range of the parameters and provide convincing support for both approaches. We also describe how the ultraviolet limit of the effective central charge can exceed one in the parameter range when the Liouville zero mode forms a bound state.

Boundary one-point function, Casimir energy and boundary state formalism in D+1 dimensional QFT

We consider quantum field theories with boundary on a codimension one hyperplane. Using 1+1 dimensional examples, we clarify the relation between three parameters characterising one-point functions, finite size corrections to the ground state energy and the singularity structure of scattering amplitudes, respectively. We then develop the formalism of boundary states in general D+1 spacetime dimensions and relate the cluster expansion of the boundary state to the correlation functions using reduction formulae. This allows us to derive the cluster expansion in terms of the boundary scattering amplitudes, and to give a derivation of the conjectured relations between the parameters in 1+1 dimensions, and their generalization to D+1 dimensions. We use these results to express the large volume asymptotics of the Casimir effect in terms of the one-point functions or alternatively the singularity structure of the one-particle reflection factor, and for the case of vanishing one-particle couplings we give a complete proof of our previous result for the leading behaviour.

On the boundary form factor program

Boundary form factor axioms are derived for the matrix elements of local boundary operators in integrable 1+1 dimensional boundary quantum field theories using the analyticity properties of correlators via the boundary reduction formula. Minimal solutions are determined for the integrable boundary perturbations of the free boson, free fermion (Ising), Lee-Yang and sinh-Gordon models and the two point functions calculated from them are checked against the exact solutions in the free cases and against the conformal data in the ultraviolet limit for the Lee-Yang model. In the case of the free boson/fermion the dimension of the solution space of the boundary form factor equation is shown to match the number of independent local operators. We obtain excellent agreement which proves not only the correctness of the solutions but also confirms the form factor axioms.

Equivalences between spin models induced by defects

The spectrum of integrable spin chains are shown to be independent of the ordering of their spins. As an application we introduce defects (local spin inhomogeneities in homogenous chains) in two-boundary spin systems and, by changing their locations, we show the spectral equivalence of different boundary conditions. In particular we relate certain nondiagonal boundary conditions to diagonal ones.

Casimir force between planes as a boundary finite size effect

The ground state energy of a boundary quantum field theory is derived in planar geometry in D+1 dimensional spacetime. It provides a universal expression for the Casimir energy which exhibits its dependence on the boundary conditions via the reflection amplitudes of the low energy particle excitations. We demonstrate the easy and straightforward applicability of the general expression by analyzing the free scalar field with Robin boundary condition and by rederiving the most important results available in the literature for this geometry.

Exactly solvable model of the 2D electrical double layer

We consider equilibrium statistical mechanics of a simplified model for the ideal conductor electrode in an interface contact with a classical semi-infinite electrolyte, modeled by the two-dimensional Coulomb gas of pointlike $\pm$ unit charges in the stability-against-collapse regime of reduced inverse temperatures $0\le β<2$. If there is a potential difference between the bulk interior of the electrolyte and the grounded interface, the electrolyte region close to the interface (known as the electrical double layer) carries some nonzero surface charge density. The model is mappable onto an integrable semi-infinite sine-Gordon theory with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The exact form-factor and boundary state information gained from the mapping provide asymptotic forms of the charge and number density profiles of electrolyte particles at large distances from the interface. The result for the asymptotic behavior of the induced electric potential, related to the charge density via the Poisson equation, confirms the validity of the concept of renormalized charge and the corresponding saturation hypothesis. It is documented on the non-perturbative result for the asymptotic density profile at a strictly nonzero $β$ that the Debye-Hückel $β\to 0$ limit is a delicate issue.

Finite size effects in quantum field theories with boundary from scattering data

We derive a relation between leading finite size corrections for a 1+1 dimensional quantum field theory on a strip and scattering data, which is very similar in spirit to the approach pioneered by Luscher for periodic boundary conditions. The consistency of the results is tested both analytically and numerically using thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz, Destri-de Vega nonlinear integral equation and classical field theory techniques. We present strong evidence that the relation between the boundary state and the reflection factor one-particle couplings, noticed earlier by Dorey et al. in the case of the Lee-Yang model extends to any boundary quantum field theory in 1+1 dimensions.

From Defects to Boundaries

In this paper we describe how relativistic field theories containing defects are equivalent to a class of boundary field theories. As a consequence previously derived results for boundaries can be directly applied to defects, these results include reduction formulas, the Coleman-Thun mechanism and Cutcosky rules. For integrable theories the defect crossing unitarity equation can be derived and defect operator found. For a generic purely transmitting impurity we use the boundary bootstrap method to obtain solutions of the defect Yang-Baxter equation. The groundstate energy on the strip with defects is also calculated.

(Semi)classical analysis of sine-Gordon theory on a strip

Classical sine-Gordon theory on a strip with integrable boundary conditions is considered analyzing the static (ground state) solutions, their existence, energy and stability under small perturbations. The classical analogue of Bethe-Yang quantization conditions for the (linearized) first breather is derived, and the dynamics of the ground states is investigated as a function of the volume. The results are shown to be consistent with the expectations from the quantum theory, as treated in the perturbed conformal field theory framework using the truncated conformal space method and thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. The asymptotic form of the finite volume corrections to the ground state energies is also derived, which must be regarded as the classical limit of some (as yet unknown) Luscher type formula.

On perturbative quantum field theory with boundary

Boundary quantum field theory is investigated in the Lagrangian framework. Models are defined perturbatively around the Neumann boundary condition. The analyticity properties of the Green functions are analyzed: Landau equations, Cutkosky rules together with the Coleman-Norton interpretation are derived. Illustrative examples as well as argument for the equivalence with other perturbative expansions are presented.

SUSY sine-Gordon theory as a perturbed conformal field theory and finite size effects

We consider SUSY sine-Gordon theory in the framework of perturbed conformal field theory. Using an argument from Zamolodchikov, we obtain the vacuum structure and the kink adjacency diagram of the theory, which is cross-checked against the exact S matrix prediction, first-order perturbed conformal field theory (PCFT), the NLIE method and truncated conformal space approach. We provide evidence for consistency between the usual Lagrangian description and PCFT on the one hand, and between PCFT, NLIE and a massgap formula conjectured by Baseilhac and Fateev, on the other. In addition, we extend the NLIE description to all the vacua of the theory.
