Debris Disks in NGC 2547

We have surveyed the 30 Myr-old cluster NGC 2547 for planetary debris disks using Spitzer. At 4.5-8 um we are sensitive to the photospheric level down to mid-M stars (0.2 Msol) and at 24 um to early-G stars (1.2 Msol). We find only two to four stars with excesses at 8 um out of ~400-500 cluster members, resulting in an excess fraction <~1 percent at this wavelength. By contrast, the excess fraction at 24 um is ~40 percent (for B-F types). Out of four late-type stars with excesses at 8 um two marginal ones are consistent with asteroid-like debris disks. Among stars with strong 8 um excesses one is possibly from a transitional disk, while another one can be a result of a catastrophic collision. Our survey demonstrates that the inner 0.1-1 AU parts of disks around solar-type stars clear out very thoroughly by 30 Myrs of age. Comparing with the much slower decay of excesses at 24 and 70 um, disks clear from the inside out, of order 10 Myr for the inner zones probed at 8 um compared with a hundred or more Myr for those probed with the two longer wavelengths.

Magnetospheric accretion-ejection processes in the classical T Tauri star AA

From a long time series of high resolution (R=115,000) HARPS spectra and simultaneous broad-band photometry, we report new evidence for magnetospheric accretion as well as ejection processes in the nearly edge-on classical T Tauri star AA Tau. AA Tau's light curve is modulated with a period of 8.22d. The recurrent luminosity dips are due to the periodic occultation of the central star by the magnetically-warped inner disk edge located at about 9 Rstar. Balmer line profiles exhibit a clear rotational modulation of high-velocity redshifted absorption components with a period of 8.22 days as well, with a maximum strength when the main accretion funnel flow passes through the line of sight. At the same time, the luminosity of the system decreases by about 1 mag, indicative of circumstellar absorption of the stellar photosphere by the magnetically-warped, corotating inner disk edge. The photospheric and HeI radial velocities also exhibit periodic variations, and the veiling is modulated by the appearance of the accretion shock at the bottom of the accretion funnel. Diagnostics of hot winds and their temporal behaviour are also presented. The peculiar geometry of the young AA Tau system (nearly edge-on) allows us to uniquely probe the acretion-ejection region close to the star. We find that most spectral and photometric diagnostics vary as expected from models of magnetically-channelled accretion in young stars, with a large scale magnetosphere tilted by 20 deg onto the star's spin axis. We also find evidence for time variability of the magnetospheric accretion flow on a timescale of a few rotational periods.

Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron Detection of Photoevaporating Protoplanetary Disks

We present 24 micron images of three protoplanetary disks being photoevaporated around high mass O type stars. These objects have ``cometary'' structure where the dust pulled away from the disk by the photoevaporating flow is forced away from the O star by photon pressure on the dust and heating and ionization of the gas. Models of the 24 micron and 8 micron brightness profiles agree with this hypothesis. These models show that the mass-loss rate needed to sustain such a configuration is in agreement with or somewhat less than the theoretical predictions for the photoevaporation process.

Low-mass star formation in Lynds 1333

Medium-resolution optical spectroscopy of the candidate YSOs associated with the small, nearby molecular cloud Lynds~1333 revealed four previously unknown classical T Tauri stars, two of which are components of a visual double, and a Class I source, IRAS 02086+7600. The spectroscopic data, together with new V,R_ C,I_C photometric and 2MASS J, H, and K_s data allowed us to estimate the masses and ages of the new T Tauri stars. We touch on the possible scenario of star formation in the region. L1333 is one of the smallest and nearest known star forming clouds, therefore it may be a suitable target for studying in detail the small scale structure of a star forming environment.

Extending the Search for Counterrotating Gas and Stars in Galaxies: A Study of Late-Type Dwarfs

In a previous study on gas-stellar counterrotation for a large sample of E/S0 and spiral galaxies (Kannappan & Fabricant 2001), two dwarf irregular galaxies were included, of which one was tentatively identified as a counterrotator. Here we extend the search for counterrotation to include 10 more irregular/spiral dwarf galaxies. We find that all systems with well defined gas and stellar rotation show kinematics consistent with co-rotation. However, we see evidence of decoupled gas and stellar kinematics in >~ 50% of the sample, possibly reflecting minor interactions too small to create large-scale gas-stellar counterrotation.

A Near-Infrared (JHK) Survey of the Vicinity of the HII region NGC 7538: Evidence for a Young Embedded Cluster

We describe the results of two near infrared (K-band) imaging surveys and a three color (JHK) survey of the vicinity of NGC 7538. The limiting magnitudes are K ~ 16.5 and K ~ 17.5 mag for the K-band surveys and K ~ 15 mag for the JHK survey. We identify more than 2000 and 9000 near-infrared (NIR) sources on the images of the two K-band surveys and 786 NIR sources in the JHK survey. From color-color diagrams, we derive a reddening law for background stars and identify 238 stars with NIR excesses. Contour maps indicate a high density peak coincident with a concentration of stars with NIR excesses. We identify this peak as a young, embedded cluster and confirm this result with the K-band luminosity function, color histograms, and color-magnitude diagrams. The center of the cluster is at RA = 23:13:39.34, DEC = 61:29:18.9. The cluster radius is $\sim$ 3' ~ 2.5 pc for an adopted distance, d ~ 2.8 kpc. For d = 2.8 kpc, and reddening, E_{J-K} = 0.55 mag, the slope of the logarithmic K-band luminosity function (KLF) of the cluster, s ~ 0.32 +- 0.03, agrees well with previous results for L1630 (s = 0.34) and M17 (s = 0.26).

Optical Spectral Monitoring of XTE J1118+480 in Outburst: Evidence for a Precessing Accretion Disk?

We present spectroscopic observations of the X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 acquired during different epochs following the 2000 March outburst. We find that the emission line profiles show variations in their double-peak structure on time scales longer than the 4.1 hr orbital period. We suggest that these changes are due to a tidally driven precessing disk. Doppler imaging of the more intense Balmer lines and the HeII 4686 line shows evidence of a persistent region of enhanced intensity superposed on the disk which is probably associated with the gas stream, the hotspot or both. We discuss the possible origins of the optical flux in the system and conclude that it may be due to a viscously heated disk.

Early-time spectroscopic observations of SN 1998aq in NGC 3982

Medium resolution spectroscopic observations of SN 1998aq made in April-May, 1998, are presented. We confirm its Type Ia classification based on the prominent Si II 6355 A line and other features similar to SNe Ia. No significant sign of hydrogen Balmer-alpha line was seen in high-resolution spectra taken at 8 days before maximum. Preliminary estimate of reddening and distance modulus, based on the correlation between the line depth ratio of two Si II features around 6000 A and BVRI light curves of Type Ia SNe, is presented. Moreover, H-alpha emission from the core of the Seyfert 2 type host galaxy NGC 3982 has also been detected.
