Activity and composition of periodic comets 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and 103P/Hartley 2 at two different perihelion passages

Through photometry and spectroscopy, we studied the evolution of the activity and chemical composition of comet 67P during its 2025 and 2021 perihelion passages and of comet 103P during its 2010 and 2023 passages. For each comet, we aim to compare their behavior from one apparition to another. We used the TRAPPIST telescopes to monitor the comets using broadband and narrowband filters. From the broadband images, we produced light curves and computed color indices for each passage, and we derived the activity slopes. We used a Haser model to compute the production rates of five gaseous species (CN, C2, C3, OH, and NH) and derived the proxy parameter Afrho for dust activity. We also observed both comets in spectroscopy during their most recent apparition using the Himalayan Chandra Telescope and compared the spectroscopic data to our results obtained through photometry. For both comets, our analysis of coma colors does not reveal any significant change from one passage to the other, indicating that the properties of the released dust grains are similar. Our values of the color indices are consistent with the mean values for Jupiter-family comets. We measured a slight increase in the gas and dust activities of comet 67P between 2015 and 2021, probably due to the small change in the comet's orbit that led the perihelion distance to decrease from 1.24 au for the first apparition to 1.21 au for the second one. Regarding 103P, we unambiguously measured a decrease (of at least 50\%) in the gas and dust activities between 2010 and 2023, showing a different behavior for this young, active comet. We find a typical chemical composition for both comets and detect no variation of the C2-to-CN production rate ratios and dust-to-gas ratios from one passage to the other, indicating constant compositions, even if the level of activity has changed for 103P.

The spin state of asteroid Apophis and a prediction of its change during the 2029 close encounter with Earth

On April 13, 2029, the asteroid Apophis will pass near Earth at a geocentric distance of about 38,000 km. Numerical models have suggested that the post-encounter spin state will critically depend on the orientation of Apophis during the flyby. We aim to determine the spin state of Apophis from its photometric observations collected during two apparitions in 2012-2013 and 2020-2021. This will enable us to accurately predict the pre-encounter rotation state and, by accounting for Earth's gravitational torque, predict a range of possible post-encounter states. We used the light curve inversion method for tumbling asteroids to reconstruct the spin state of Apophis and its convex shape model. The result is adopted as the initial condition of a numerical model describing Apophis's future rotation state. The data from the two apparitions are insufficient to determine Apophis's rotation and precession periods uniquely. The formally best-fit solution is 27.374 +/- 0.001 h for the precession period and 262.2 +/- 0.1 h for the rotation period, but at least two other combinations of the periods provide a similarly good fit to the available data. All the currently acceptable models result in approximately the same pre-encounter orientation of Apophis in early 2029. This is because the accurate photometric data were collected during two apparitions separated by 8 years, which is the same interval as from 2021 to 2029. Although the close encounter with Earth in April 2029 hugely increases the post-encounter uncertainty of Apophis's spin state, the short-axis spin mode will be preserved with a high likelihood. Additional observations taken in 2027 and 2028 will break the ambiguity in Apophis's pre-encounter spin solution and allow us to get a more accurate post-encounter spin state prediction

GRB 241030A: a bright afterglow challenging forward shock emission

Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 241030A (z = 1.411) exhibited a bright afterglow (similar to GRB 221009A), detected across gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, and optical bands, providing a probe of GRB afterglow physics. We compiled multi-wavelength observations spanning from a minute to a week after the prompt emission, processing the data through a unified photometry pipeline. We analysed the observations both analytically and using Bayesian inference with two independent models. Our models assume that the afterglow emission arises from the strong forward shock of a laterally structured jet, with possible contributions from synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scatterings. Our models reproduce X-ray to optical data, favouring a jet propagating into a constant-density interstellar medium, with a viewing angle within the jet core. However, both analyses require parameter values that are extreme compared to expectations from standard theory. In particular, our results imply extremely energetic jets despite regular prompt energy, leading to a very inefficient prompt emission. Furthermore, the jets are inefficient at accelerating particles, with low electron and magnetic energy fractions, leading to significant SSC emission. Our analyses indicate that the jets have large opening angles and propagate in high-density media. If the afterglow is indeed powered by radiation emitted behind a strong forward shock, our results place GRB 241030A within a sub-class of GRBs characterised by extreme kinetic energies, large jet opening angles, and very low prompt emission efficiencies, with strong SSC radiation. These predictions are difficult to reconcile with typical expectations from other GRBs. We therefore suggest that the afterglow of GRB 241030A is not solely powered by forward shock emission.

TOI-1080 b: a temperate, rocky planet orbiting a quiet M4V host

We present the detection and validation of a small, temperate transiting exoplanet orbiting TOI-1080 every 3.9652482$^{+0.0000014}_{-0.0000015}$ days. The host is a quiet M4V star at 25.6 pc. The planet signal was first detected by TESS and validated using TESS and ground-based observations. By fitting the available light curves, the planet radius is measured to be 1.200+- 0.058 Rearth and its equilibrium temperature of 368$^{+12}_{-10}$ K. With NIRPS radial velocities, we are able to place a 3-sigma upper limit on the mass of TOI-1080 b of 10.7 Mearth. Our injection-recovery tests enable us to discard additional transiting planets in the TOI-1080 system with radii down to 0.9 Rearth and periods between 0.5 and 7.7 days, and planets with radii larger than 1.4 Rearth for periods up to 19 days. We demonstrate that it is highly amenable to characterisation of its mass and putative atmosphere. In particular, we find that TOI-1080 b is an exceptional target for the ongoing JWST+HST Rocky Worlds DDT programme, having a priority score that is higher than four out of nine targets currently being investigated by the programme. TOI-1080 b can be added to the sample of nearby benchmark planets accessible for detailed study with JWST.

MANGOS II: Five new giant planets orbiting low-mass stars

Giant planets orbiting low-mass stars on short orbits present a conundrum, as in the most extreme cases their existence cannot be reconciled with current models of core accretion. Therefore, surveys dedicated to finding these rare planets have a key role to play by growing the sample to overcome small number statistics. In this work we present MANGOS, a programme dedicated to the search for giant objects (planets, brown dwarfs, and low-mass stars) orbiting M dwarfs. We report on the discovery of five new giant planets (TOI-3288 Ab, TOI-4666 b, TOI-5007 b, TOI-5292 Ab, TOI-5916 b) first detected by TESS, and confirmed using ground-based photometry and spectroscopy. The five planets have radii in the range 0.99-1.12 $\mathrm{R_{Jup}}$, masses between 0.49--1.69~$\mathrm{M_{Jup}}$, and orbital periods between 1.43 and 2.91 days. We reveal that TOI-3288 and TOI-5292 are wide binaries, and in the case of TOI-5292 we are able to characterise both stellar components. We demonstrate that the planets presented are suitable for further characterisation of their obliquities and atmospheres. We detect a small but significant eccentricity for TOI-5007 b, although for this to be more robust, more observations are needed to fully sample the orbit. Finally, we reveal a correlation between stellar metallicity and planet bulk density for giant planets orbiting low-mass stars.

Two warm Earth-sized exoplanets and an Earth-sized candidate in the M5V-M6V binary system TOI-2267

We report two warm Earth-sized exoplanets orbiting the close binary TOI-2267 (M5+M6, separation ~8 au). Data from TESS and ground-based facilities confirm the planets, but we cannot determine which star they orbit. The planets have radii of 1.00+/-0.11 R_Earth (TOI-2267 b, P=2.28 d) and 1.14+/-0.13 R_Earth (TOI-2267 c, P=3.49 d) if around TOI-2267A, or 1.22+/-0.29 R_Earth and 1.36+/-0.33 R_Earth if around TOI-2267B. TESS also shows a candidate signal (TOI-2267.02, P=2.03 d, 0.95+/-0.12 or 1.13+/-0.30 R_Earth). Dynamical analysis shows all three cannot orbit one star; the most stable configuration has planets b and c (near a 3:2 resonance) orbiting one star and the candidate the other. This scenario would make TOI-2267 the most compact binary system known to host planets, with both components harbouring transiting worlds, offering a unique benchmark for studying planet formation and evolution in compact binary.

TOI-1743 b, TOI-5799 b, TOI-5799 c and TOI-6223 b: TESS discovery and validation of four super-Earth to Neptune-sized planets around M dwarfs

We present the discovery by the TESS mission of one transiting Neptune-sized planet, TOI-6223 b and two transiting super-Earths, TOI-1743 b and TOI-5799 b. We validate these planets using a statistical validation method, multi-color light curves and other ancillary observations. We combined TESS and ground-based photometric data to constrain the physical properties of the planets. TOI-6223-b is slightly larger than Neptune ($R_p=5.12^{+0.24}_{-0.25}$ $R_\oplus$) orbiting an early M dwarf in 3.86 days, and it has an equilibrium temperature of $T_{\rm eq}=714\pm14$ K. TOI-1743 b orbits its M4V star every 4.27 days. It has a radius of $R_p=1.83^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$ $R_\oplus$ and an equilibrium temperature of $T_{\rm eq}=485^{+14}_{-13}$ K. TOI-5799 b has a radius of $R_p=1.733^{+0.096}_{-0.090}$ $R_\oplus$, and an equilibrium temperature of $T_{\rm eq}=505\pm16$ K orbits an M2 dwarf in 4.17 days. We also present the discovery of an additional transiting planet, TOI-5799 c, that we identified in the TESS data and validated using the SHERLOCK pipeline. TOI-5799 c is a super-Earth with a radius of $R_p=1.76^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$ $R_\oplus$. Its orbital period and its equilibrium temperature are 14.01 days and $T_{\rm eq}=337\pm11$ K, which place it near the inner edge of the habitable zone of its star.We show that these planets are suitable for both radial velocity follow-up and atmospheric characterization. They orbit bright (< 11 $K_{mag}$) early M dwarfs, making them accessible for precise mass measurements. The combination of the planet sizes and stellar brightness of their host stars also make them suitable targets for atmospheric exploration with the JWST. Such studies may provide insights into planet formation and evolution, as TOI-1743-b, TOI-5799-b, and TOI-5799-c lie within the so-called radius valley, while TOI-6223-b is located on the Neptunian ridge in the period-radius plane.

Ionic emissions and activity evolution in comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE): Insights from long-slit spectroscopy and photometry

Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was the brightest comet in the northern hemisphere since C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), providing a unique opportunity to study its composition and spatial distribution of emissions. We conducted narrow-band photometry and long-slit low-resolution spectroscopy to monitor the comet's activity and compositional evolution over several weeks post-perihelion. Narrow-band images (OH, NH, CN, C$_2$, C$_3$, BC, GC, RC) and broad-band images (B, V, Rc, Ic) were acquired with TRAPPIST-North between 22 July and 10 September 2020 to derive production rates, mixing ratios, and dust proxy (Af$ρ$). A long-slit spectrum obtained on 24 July 2020 with HFOSC on the 2-m HCT was used to analyse emission profiles along the sunward and anti-sunward directions. We report production rates and mixing ratios of OH, NH, CN, C$_2$, C$_3$, and NH$_2$, and derive the water production rate using forbidden oxygen line flux. Ionic emissions from N$_2^+$, CO$^+$, CO$_2^+$, and H$_2$O$^+$ were detected at 4$\times$10$^4$ to 1$\times$10$^5$ km from the nucleus in the tailward direction. The average N$_2^+$/CO$^+$ ratio was found to be (3.0 $\pm$ 1.0)$\times$10$^{-2}$, refined to (4.8 $\pm$ 2.4)$\times$10$^{-2}$ using fluorescence modeling. The CO$_2^+$/CO$^+$ ratio was measured to be 1.34 $\pm$ 0.21. These results suggest the comet likely formed in the cold mid-to-outer solar nebula (approx. 50-70 K). Additionally, the average rotation period was estimated as 7.28 $\pm$ 0.79 hours, with a CN outflow velocity of 2.40 $\pm$ 0.25 km/s

Variations in Volatile-Driven Activity of Comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) Revealed by Long-Term Multi-Wavelength Observations

Context. A comprehensive study of comets over a wide heliocentric distance range helps us understand the physical processes driving their activity and reveals compositional differences across dynamical groups. C/2017 K2 (PANSTARRS) is a Dynamically New Oort Cloud comet (DNC) that showed activity as far as 23.75 au and displayed a CO-rich coma at 6.72 au, making it a key object to investigate pre- and post-perihelion behavior. Aims. We aim to study the long-term activity evolution and chemical composition of C/2017 K2 using photometry and spectroscopy, from October 2017 (r$_h$ = 15.18 au) pre-perihelion to April 2025 (r$_h$ = 8.46 au) post-perihelion. Methods. Broad-band and narrow-band imaging from both TRAPPIST telescopes enabled us to produce an 8-year light curve, color analysis, and derivation of activity slopes. Production rates of OH, NH, CN, C$_3$, and C$_2$ were computed using a Haser model, along with the dust proxy A(0)f$ρ$. High-resolution spectra from CRIRES$^+$ and UVES at three epochs (May - September 2022) provided simultaneous observations of parent and daughter species as the comet crossed the water sublimation zone. Results. The light curve of C/2017 K2 shows a complex evolution with varying slopes and a brightness plateau around perihelion, indicating multiple active species. Coma colors remained constant, suggesting uniform dust properties and similarity to other active long-period comets. Gas production rates indicate a typical C$_2$/CN composition with a high dust-to-gas ratio. Analysis of forbidden oxygen lines shows a transition from CO and CO$_2$-driven activity to water-driven sublimation inside 3 au. Infrared spectra reveal C/2017 K2 as a typical-to-enriched comet, with HCN identified as the main parent of CN, and C$_2$ likely originating from C$_2$H$_2$ rather than C$_2$H$_6$.

TOI-5005 b: A super-Neptune in the savanna near the ridge

The Neptunian desert and savanna have recently been found to be separated by a ridge, an overdensity of planets in the period range of $\simeq$3-5 days. These features are thought to be shaped by dynamical and atmospheric processes, but their roles are not yet well understood. Our aim was to confirm and characterize the super-Neptune TESS candidate TOI-5005.01, which orbits a moderately bright (V = 11.8) solar-type star (G2 V) with an orbital period of 6.3 days. We confirm TOI-5005 b to be a transiting super-Neptune with a radius of $R_{\rm p}$ = $6.25\pm 0.24$ $\rm R_{\rm \oplus}$ ($R_{\rm p}$ = $0.558\pm 0.021$ $\rm R_{\rm J}$) and a mass of $M_{\rm p}$ = $32.7\pm 5.9$ $\rm M_{\oplus}$ ($M_{\rm p}$ = $0.103\pm 0.018$ $\rm M_{\rm J}$), which corresponds to a mean density of $ρ_{\rm p}$ = $0.74 \pm 0.16$ $\rm g \, cm^{-3}$. Our internal structure modelling indicates that the overall metal mass fraction is well constrained to a value slightly lower than that of Neptune and Uranus ($Z_{\rm planet}$ = $0.76^{+0.04}_{-0.11}$). We also estimated the present-day atmospheric mass-loss rate of TOI-5005 b, but found contrasting predictions depending on the choice of photoevaporation model. At a population level, we find statistical evidence ($p$-value = $0.0092^{+0.0184}_{-0.0066}$) that planets in the savanna such as TOI-5005 b tend to show lower densities than planets in the ridge, with a dividing line around 1 $\rm g \, cm^{-3}$, which supports the hypothesis of different evolutionary pathways populating the two regimes. TOI-5005 b is located in a key region of the period-radius space to study the transition between the Neptunian ridge and the savanna. It orbits the brightest star of all such planets, which makes it a target of interest for atmospheric and orbital architecture observations that will bring a clearer picture of its overall evolution.

Size and shape of the trans-Neptunian object (470316) 2007 OC10: Comparison with thermal data

The shapes of only 12 trans-Neptunian objects have been directly measured, offering crucial insights into their internal structure. These properties are strongly connected to the processes that shaped the early Solar System, and provide important clues about its evolution. The aim of the present work is to characterise the size, shape, geometric albedo, and beaming parameter of the TNO (470316) 2007 OC10 . We compared these values to the effective diameter and geometric albedo obtained from thermal data by the TNOs are Cool survey. We also combined occultation and thermal data to constrain the size of a putative unresolved satellite. We predicted an occultation of the star Gaia DR3 2727866328215869952 by 2007 OC10 on 2022 August 22. Four stations detected the occultation. We implemented an elliptical shape model for the projection of 2007 OC10. Following a Bayesian approach, we obtained the posterior probability density in the model parameter space using a Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The elliptical limb of 2007 OC10 has semi-axes of $ 215^{+10}_{-7} \times 141 ^{+24}_{-23}$ km, and thus the projected axis ratio is $b/a = 0.58^{+0.16}_{-0.16}$. The area-equivalent diameter is $330^{+56}_{-55}$,km. From our own absolute magnitude value of $H_V = 5.40 \pm 0.02$, the geometric albedo is $p_V = 11.2 ^{+2.1}_{-5.0}$ %. Combining the occultation results with thermal data, we constrain the beaming parameter to $η= 1.42^{+0.75}_{-0.58}$. Occultation data reveal that the star is double. The secondary star has a position angle with respect to the primary of $56^{+3}_{-17}$ degrees, has an angular separation of $57^{+4}_{-11}$ mas, and is $1.18^{+0.07}_{-0.07}$ magnitudes fainter than the primary.

Shape and spin-state model of tumbling asteroid (319) Leona

Stellar occultations by asteroids observed from several stations are routinely used to reconstruct the asteroid's sky-plane projections. Together with the asteroid's shape model reconstructed from photometry, such occultations enable us to precisely determine its size and reveal details of its shape. When reducing occultation timings, the usual assumption is that the star has a negligible angular diameter compared to the asteroid, so it is modeled as a point source. The occultation of Betelgeuse (alpha Orionis) by asteroid (319) Leona on 12 December 2023 was a rare exception - the apparent angular diameter of the star was $\sim 50$ mas, about the same as that of the asteroid. This work aimed to reconstruct the shape and spin model of asteroid Leona. Then, the projection of that model for the time of the occultation can be computed, which is necessary to interpret the occultation timings and infer valuable information about Betelgeuse itself. We collected available photometric data of Leona, carried out new observations, and reconstructed a unique convex shape model. Using three other occultations observed in 2023, we scaled this convex model. We also reconstructed an alternative nonconvex model with the same spin parameters and size but showing some surface details that explain better one of the occultations. We confirmed the tumbling rotation state of Leona and uniquely determined the rotation period $P_ψ= 1172.2 \pm 0.3$ h and the precession period $P_ϕ= 314.27 \pm 0.02$ h. The volume-equivalent diameter determined by occultations is $59.1 \pm 0.9$ km. The reconstructed shape model of Leona enabled us to compute its sky-plane projection for the time of the Betelgeuse occultation. A reliable shape model can be used to interpret the observed occultation of Betelgeuse by Leona.

TOI-2015b: a sub-Neptune in strong gravitational interaction with an outer non-transiting planet

TOI-2015 is a known exoplanetary system around an M4 dwarf star, consisting of a transiting sub-Neptune planet in a 3.35-day orbital period, TOI-2015b, accompanied by a non-transiting companion, TOI-2015c. High-precision RV measurements were taken with the MAROON-X spectrograph, and high-precision photometric data were collected several networks. We re-characterize the target star by combining optical spectr, Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) and Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) analysis. The TOI-2015 host star is a K=10.3mag M4-type dwarf with a sub-solar metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.31+/-0.16, and a Teff=3200K. Our photodynamical analysis of the system strongly favors the 5:3 mean motion resonance and in this scenario the planet b has an orbital period of 3.34days, a mass of Mp=9.02+/-0.34Me, a radius of Rp=3.309+/-0.012Re, resulting in a density of rhop= 1.40+/-0.06g/cm3, indicative of a Neptune like composition. Its transits exhibit large (>1hr) timing variations indicative of an outer perturber in the system. We performed a global analysis of the high-resolution RV measurements, the photometric data, and the TTVs, and inferred that TOI-2015 hosts a second planet, TOI-2015c, in a non-transiting configuration. TOI-2015c has an orbital period of Pc=5.583days and a mass of Mp=8.91+0.38-0.40Me. The dynamical configuration of TOI-2015b and TOI-2015c can be used to constrain the system's planetary formation and migration history. Based on the mass-radius composition models, TOI-2015b is a water-rich or rocky planet with a hydrogen-helium envelope. Moreover, TOI-2015b has a high transmission spectroscopic metric (TSM=149), making it a favorable target for future transmission spectroscopic observations with JWST to constrain the atmospheric composition of the planet. Such observations would also help to break the degeneracies in theoretical models of the planet's interior structure.

TESS discovery of two super-Earths orbiting the M-dwarf stars TOI-6002 and TOI-5713 near the radius valley

We present the validation of two TESS super-Earth candidates transiting the mid-M dwarfs TOI-6002 and TOI-5713 every 10.90 and 10.44 days, respectively. The first star (TOI-6002) is located $32.038\pm0.019$ pc away, with a radius of $0.2409^{+0.0066}_{-0.0065}$ \rsun, a mass of $0.2105^{+0.0049}_{-0.0048}$ \msun, and an effective temperature of $3229^{+77}_{-57}$ K. The second star (TOI-5713) is located $40.946\pm0.032$ pc away, with a radius of $0.2985^{+0.0073}_{-0.0072}$ \rsun, a mass of $0.2653\pm0.0061$ \msun, and an effective temperature of $3225^{+41}_{-40}$ K. We validated the planets using TESS data, ground-based multi-wavelength photometry from many ground-based facilities, as well as high-resolution AO observations from Keck/NIRC2. TOI-6002 b has a radius of $1.65^{+0.22}_{-0.19}$ \re\ and receives $1.77^{+0.16}_{-0.11} S_\oplus$. TOI-5713 b has a radius of $1.77_{-0.11}^{+0.13} \re$ and receives $2.42\pm{0.11} S_\oplus$. Both planets are located near the radius valley and near the inner edge of the habitable zone of their host stars, which makes them intriguing targets for future studies to understand the formation and evolution of small planets around M-dwarf stars.

The Discovery and Follow-up of Four Transiting Short-period Sub-Neptunes Orbiting M dwarfs

Sub-Neptunes with $2-3R_\oplus$ are intermediate in size between rocky planets and Neptune-sized planets. The orbital properties and bulk compositions of transiting sub-Neptunes provide clues to the formation and evolution of close-in small planets. In this paper, we present the discovery and follow-up of four sub-Neptunes orbiting M dwarfs (TOI-782, TOI-1448, TOI-2120, and TOI-2406), three of which were newly validated by ground-based follow-up observations and statistical analyses. TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b have radii of $R_\mathrm{p} = 2.740^{+0.082}_{-0.079}\,R_\oplus$, $2.769^{+0.073}_{-0.068}\,R_\oplus$, $2.120\pm0.067\,R_\oplus$, and $2.830^{+0.068}_{-0.066}\,R_\oplus$ and orbital periods of $P = 8.02$, $8.11$, $5.80$, and $3.08$\,days, respectively. Doppler monitoring with Subaru/InfraRed Doppler instrument led to 2$σ$ upper limits on the masses of $<19.1\ M_\oplus$, $<19.5\ M_\oplus$, $<6.8\ M_\oplus$, and $<15.6\ M_\oplus$ for TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b, respectively. The mass-radius relationship of these four sub-Neptunes testifies to the existence of volatile material in their interiors. These four sub-Neptunes, which are located above the so-called ``radius valley'', are likely to retain a significant atmosphere and/or an icy mantle on the core, such as a water world. We find that at least three of the four sub-Neptunes (TOI-782 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b) orbiting M dwarfs older than 1 Gyr, are likely to have eccentricities of $e \sim 0.2-0.3$. The fact that tidal circularization of their orbits is not achieved over 1 Gyr suggests inefficient tidal dissipation in their interiors.

TOI-4336 A b: A temperate sub-Neptune ripe for atmospheric characterization in a nearby triple M-dwarf system

Small planets transiting bright nearby stars are essential to our understanding of the formation and evolution of exoplanetary systems. However, few constitute prime targets for atmospheric characterization, and even fewer are part of multiple star systems. This work aims to validate TOI-4336 A b, a sub-Neptune-sized exoplanet candidate identified by the TESS space-based transit survey around a nearby M-dwarf. We validate the planetary nature of TOI-4336 A b through the global analysis of TESS and follow-up multi-band high-precision photometric data from ground-based telescopes, medium- and high-resolution spectroscopy of the host star, high-resolution speckle imaging, and archival images. The newly discovered exoplanet TOI-4336 A b has a radius of 2.1$\pm$0.1R$_{\oplus}$. Its host star is an M3.5-dwarf star of mass 0.33$\pm$0.01M$_{\odot}$ and radius 0.33$\pm$0.02R$_{\odot}$ member of a hierarchical triple M-dwarf system 22 pc away from the Sun. The planet's orbital period of 16.3 days places it at the inner edge of the Habitable Zone of its host star, the brightest of the inner binary pair. The parameters of the system make TOI-4336 A b an extremely promising target for the detailed atmospheric characterization of a temperate sub-Neptune by transit transmission spectroscopy with JWST.

TOI-2266 b: a keystone super-Earth at the edge of the M dwarf radius valley

We validate the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) object of interest TOI-2266.01 (TIC 348911) as a small transiting planet (most likely a super-Earth) orbiting a faint M5 dwarf ($V=16.54$) on a 2.33~d orbit. The validation is based on an approach where multicolour transit light curves are used to robustly estimate the upper limit of the transiting object's radius. Our analysis uses SPOC-pipeline TESS light curves from Sectors 24, 25, 51, and 52, simultaneous multicolour transit photometry observed with MuSCAT2, MuSCAT3, and HiPERCAM, and additional transit photometry observed with the LCOGT telescopes. TOI-2266 b is found to be a planet with a radius of $1.54\pm\0.09\,R_\oplus$, which locates it at the edge of the transition zone between rocky planets, water-rich planets, and sub-Neptunes (the so-called M~dwarf radius valley). The planet is amenable to ground-based radial velocity mass measurement with red-sensitive spectrographs installed in large telescopes, such as MAROON-X and Keck Planet Finder (KPF), which makes it a valuable addition to a relatively small population of planets that can be used to probe the physics of the transition zone. Further, the planet's orbital period of 2.33 days places it inside a `keystone planet' wedge in the period-radius plane where competing planet formation scenarios make conflicting predictions on how the radius valley depends on the orbital period. This makes the planet also a welcome addition to the small population of planets that can be used to test small-planet formation scenarios around M~dwarfs.

Atmospheric dynamics and shock waves in RR Lyr -- I. The three H$α$ emissions

Although spectroscopic observations of RR Lyrae stars have now been carried out for almost a century, it is only recently that it has been identified that the hydrogen line exhibits three successive emissions in each pulsation cycle. The purpose of this study is to clarify the physical origin of these three emissions and their connection with atmospheric dynamics and the influence of Blazhko modulation on their intensity. From the value of the blueshift of the main H$α$ emission, the velocity of the hypersonic shock front was estimated between 100 and 150 $\pm 10$ km$\,$s$^{-1}$ (Mach number between 10 and 15). It has been established that the shock velocity increases from the minimum Blazhko to its maximum, and after that, gradually decreases to the Blazhko minimum to start growing again. This observational result is consistent with the shock model proposed in 2013 to explain the Blazhko effect. The intensity of the H$α$ emission increases with the shock velocity up to a maximum value around 137 km$\,$s$^{-1}$ and then decreases as the shock velocity increases further. This effect would be the consequence of the more and more important ionization of the atoms in the radiative shock wake. The second (blueshifted) H$α$ emission, is the consequence of an approximately constant supersonic compression (Mach number between 2 and 3) of the upper atmosphere falling on the photospheric layers, during 3 to 16% of the pulsation period. Finally, the third H$α$ emission (P-Cygni profile) would be the consequence of the expansion of the high atmosphere induced by the shock wave during its final weakening.
