The MUSE Target Chamber Post Veto

The Muon Scattering Experiment (MUSE) was developed to address the proton radius puzzle through simultaneous electron-proton and muon-proton scattering using the Paul Scherrer Institute's PiM1 secondary beamline. MUSE uses a large-solid-angle, non-magnetic spectrometer to detect beam particles scattering from a liquid hydrogen cell contained within a vacuum chamber. Due to the large scattering windows, the structural integrity of the chamber is supported by posts located at small scattering angles. While out of the acceptance, particles in the tails of the beam distribution can strike these posts, causing a significant trigger background. We describe the design and performance of the Target Chamber Post Veto (TCPV) detector installed inside the vacuum chamber to remove these background events at the trigger level.

$\mathcal{N}=2$ Universality at Strong Coupling

We present a detailed analysis of integrated correlators for an $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theory on a squashed sphere with SU$(N)$ gauge group and fundamental/anti-symmetric matter. Employing the matrix model arising from supersymmetric localisation, we compute derivatives of the partition function $\mathcal{Z}$ with respect to the fundamental mass ($\mu$), the anti-symmetric mass ($m$) and the squashing parameter ($b$), corresponding to integrated insertions of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ flavour-current and stress-tensor multiplets, which are holographically dual to gluon and graviton scatterings in the presence of D7-branes. For correlators dual to only graviton scatterings, we confirm the planar-limit equivalence with $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. Our main result is a remarkable universality for the mixed gluon-graviton scattering amplitudes off D7-branes, obtained from $\partial_\mu^2 \partial_m^2 \log \mathcal{Z}$ and $\partial_\mu^2 \partial_b^2 \log \mathcal{Z}$. We show that the leading and sub-leading large-$N$ contributions in the strong-coupling regime are governed by universal asymptotic series, identical to those found for integrated giant-graviton correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. We also propose an $\text{SL}(2, \mathbb{Z})$-invariant completion of these results in terms of non-holomorphic Eisenstein series. This completion provides exact constraints on higher-derivative terms in the dual $\text{AdS}_5$ brane-string amplitudes and highlights an unexpected universality across distinct superconformal theories at strong coupling.

The MUSE Beamline Calorimeter

The MUon Scattering Experiment (MUSE) was motivated by the proton radius puzzle arising from the discrepancy between muonic hydrogen spectroscopy and electron-proton measurements. The MUSE physics goals also include testing lepton universality, precisely measuring two-photon exchange contribution, and testing radiative corrections. MUSE addresses these physics goals through simultaneous measurement of high precision cross sections for electron-proton and muon-proton scattering using a mixed-species beam. The experiment will run at both positive and negative beam polarities. Measuring precise cross sections requires understanding both the incident beam energy and the radiative corrections. For this purpose, a lead-glass calorimeter was installed at the end of the beam line in the MUSE detector system. In this article we discuss the detector specifications, calibration and performance. We demonstrate that the detector performance is well reproduced by simulation, and meets experimental requirements.

GNCformer Enhanced Self-attention for Automatic Speech Recognition

In this paper,an Enhanced Self-Attention (ESA) mechanism has been put forward for robust feature extraction. The proposed ESA is integrated with the recursive gated convolution and self-attention mechanism. In particular, the former is used to capture multi-order feature interaction and the latter is for global feature extraction. In addition, the location of interest that is suitable for inserting the ESA is also worth being explored. In this paper, the ESA is embedded into the encoder layer of the Transformer network for automatic speech recognition (ASR) tasks, and this newly proposed model is named GNCformer. The effectiveness of the GNCformer has been validated using two datasets, that are Aishell-1 and HKUST.Experimental results show that, compared with the Transformer network,0.8%CER,and 1.2%CER improvement for these two mentioned datasets, respectively, can be achieved. It is worth mentioning that only 1.4M additional parameters have been involved in our proposed GNCformer.

Electroweak Physics for Color Superconductivity

We construct the effective theories describing the electroweak interactions for the low energy excitations associated with the color superconductive phases of QCD at high matter density. The main result, for the 3 flavor case, is that the quasiparticle Goldstone boson $π^0$ decay into two physical massless photons is identical to the zero density case once we use the new Goldstone decay constant and the modified electric charge $\widetilde{e}=e \cosθ$, with $\tanθ=2e/\sqrt{3}g_s$ and $g_s$ the strong coupling constant. For 2 flavors we find that the coupling of the quarks to the neutral vector boson $Z^0$ is modified with respect to the zero density case. We finally point out possible applications of our result to the physics of compact objects.

Enhanced Global Symmetry Constraints on epsilon Terms

Recently it has been proposed that the physical spectrum of a vector-like gauge field theory may exhibit an enhanced global symmetry near a chiral/conformal phase transition. The new symmetry is related to the possibility, supported by various investigations, that a parity-doubled spectrum develops as the number of fermions Nf is increased to a critical value above which it is expected that the symmetric phase is restored. We show that parity-doubling together with the associated enhanced global symmetry severely constrains the epsilon terms of the effective Lagrangian involving Goldstone bosons as well as massive spin-1 particles. We extend our analysis to underlying fermions in pseudo-real representations of the gauge group.

Low Energy Theory for 2 flavors at High Density QCD

We construct the effective Lagrangian describing the low energy excitations for Quantum Chromodynamics with two flavors at high density. The non-linear realization framework is employed to properly construct the low energy effective theory. The light degrees of freedom, as required by 't Hooft anomaly conditions, contain massless fermions which we properly include in the effective Lagrangian. We also provide a discussion of the linearly realized Lagrangian.

Phases of Chiral Gauge Theories

We discuss the behavior of two non-supersymmetric chiral SU(N) gauge theories, involving fermions in the symmetric and antisymmetric two-index tensor representations respectively. In addition to global anomaly matching, we employ a recently proposed inequality constraint on the number of effective low energy (massless) degrees of freedom of a theory, based on the thermodynamic free energy. Several possible zero temperature phases are consistent with the constraints. A simple picture for the phase structure emerges if these theories choose the phase, consistent with global anomaly matching, that minimizes the massless degree of freedom count defined through the free energy. This idea suggests that confinement with the preservation of the global symmetries through the formation of massless composite fermions is in general not preferred. While our discussion is restricted mainly to bilinear condensate formation, higher dimensional condensates are considered for one case. We conclude by commenting briefly on two related supersymmetric chiral theories.
