System upgrade for $μ$Bq/m$^3$ level $^{222}$Rn concentration measurement

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multipurpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed for the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as primary physics goal. The central detector will be submerged in a water Cherenkov detector to lower the background from the environment and cosmic muons. Radon is one of the primary background sources. Nitrogen will be used in several sub-systems, and a highly sensitive radon detector has to be developed to measure its radon concentration. A system has been developed based on $^{222}$Rn enrichment of activated carbon and $^{222}$Rn detection based on the electrostatic collection. This paper presents the detail of a $μ$Bq/m$^3$ level $^{222}$Rn concentration measurement system and gives detailed information about how the adsorption coefficient was measured and how the temperature, flow rate, and $^{222}$Rn concentration affect the adsorption coefficient.

Research of radon diffusion behavior in liquid scintillator

The background caused by radon and its daughters is an important background in the low background liquid scintillator (LS) detectors. The study of the diffusion behaviour of radon in the LS contributes to the analysis of the related background caused by radon. Methodologies and devices for measuring the diffusion coefficient and solubility of radon in materials are developed and described. The radon diffusion coefficient of the LS was measured for the first time and in addition the solubility coefficient was also obtained. In addition, the radon diffusion coefficient of the polyolefine film which is consistent with data in the literature was measured to verify the reliability of the diffusion device.

Symmetry classification of spin-orbit coupled spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We develop a symmetry classification scheme to find ground states of pseudo spin-1/2, spin-1, and spin-2 spin-orbit coupled spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, and show that as the SO(2) symmetry of simultaneous spin and space rotations is broken into discrete cyclic groups, various types of lattice structures emerge in the absence of a lattice potential, examples include two different kagaome lattices for pseudo spin-1/2 condensates and a nematic vortex lattice in which uniaxial and biaxial spin textures align alternatively for spin-2 condensates. For the pseudo spin-1/2 system, although mean-field states always break time-reversal symmetry, there exists a time-reversal invariant many-body ground state, which is fragmented and expected to be observed in a micro-condensate.

Quantum spin mixing in a binary mixture of spin-1 atomic condensates

We study quantum spin mixing in a binary mixture of spin-1 condensates including coherent interspecies mixing process, using the familiar spinor condensates of $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na atoms in the ground lower hyperfine F=1 manifolds as prototype examples. Within the single spatial mode approximation for each of the two spinor condensates, the mixing dynamics reduce to that of three coupled nonlinear pendulums with clear physical interpretations. Using suitably prepared initial states, it is possible to determine the interspecies singlet-pairing as well as spin-exchange interactions from the subsequent mixing dynamics.

Dynamically generating arbitrary spin-orbit couplings for neutral atoms

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can give rise to interesting physics, from spin Hall to topological insulators, normally in condensed matter systems. Recently, this topical area has extended into atomic quantum gases in searching for artificial/synthetic gauge potentials. The prospects of tunable interaction and quantum state control promote neutral atoms as nature's quantum emulators for SOC. Y.-J. Lin {\it et al.} recently demonstrated a special form of the SOC $k_xσ_y$: which they interpret as an equal superposition of Rashba and Dresselhaus couplings, in bose condensed atoms [Nature (London) \textbf{471}, 83 (2011)]. This work reports an idea capable of implementing arbitrary forms of SOC by switching between two pairs of Raman laser pulses like that used by Lin {\it et al.}. While one pair affects $k_xσ_y$ for some time, a second pair creates $k_yσ_y$ over other times with Raman pulses from different directions and a subsequent spin rotation into $\pm k_yσ_x$. With sufficient many pulses, the effective actions from different durations are small and accumulate in the same exponent despite that $k_xσ_y$ and $\pm k_yσ_x$ do not commute. Our scheme involves no added complication, and can be demonstrated within current experiments. It applies equally to bosonic or fermionic atoms.

Quantum entangled ground states of two spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We revisit in detail the non-mean-field ground-state phase diagram for a binary mixture of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates including quantum fluctuations. The non-commuting terms in the spin-dependent Hamiltonian under single spatial mode approximation make it difficult to obtain exact eigenstates. Utilizing the spin z-component conservation and the total spin angular momentum conservation, we numerically derive the information of the building blocks and evaluate von Neumann entropy to quantify the ground states. The mean-field phase boundaries are found to remain largely intact, yet the ground states show fragmented and entangled behaviors within large parameter spaces of interspecies spin-exchange and singlet-pairing interactions.

Spin squeezing: transforming one-axis-twisting into two-axis-twisting

Squeezed spin states possess unique quantum correlation or entanglement that are of significant promises for advancing quantum information processing and quantum metrology. In recent back to back publications [C. Gross \textit{et al, Nature} \textbf{464}, 1165 (2010) and Max F. Riedel \textit{et al, Nature} \textbf{464}, 1170 (2010)], reduced spin fluctuations are observed leading to spin squeezing at -8.2dB and -2.5dB respectively in two-component atomic condensates exhibiting one-axis-twisting interactions (OAT). The noise reduction limit for the OAT interaction scales as $\propto 1/{N^{2/3}}$, which for a condensate with $N\sim 10^3$ atoms, is about 100 times below standard quantum limit. We present a scheme using repeated Rabi pulses capable of transforming the OAT spin squeezing into the two-axis-twisting type, leading to Heisenberg limited noise reduction $\propto 1/N$, or an extra 10-fold improvement for $N\sim 10^3$.

Emergent patterns in a spin-orbit coupled spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate

The ground-state phases of a spin-orbit (SO) coupled atomic spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) are studied. Interesting density patterns spontaneously formed are widespread due to the competition between SO coupling and spin-dependent interactions like in a SO coupled spin-1 condensate. Unlike the case of spin-1 condensates, which are characterized by either ferromagnetic or polar phase in the absence of SO, spin-2 condensates can take a cyclic phase, where we find the patterns formed due to SO are square or triangular in their spin component densities for axial symmetric SO interaction. Both patterns are found to continuously evolve into striped forms with increased asymmetry of the SO coupling.

Spontaneously axisymmetry breaking phase in a binary mixture of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the ground state phases for a mixture of two atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in the presence of a weak magnetic (B-) field. The ground state is found to contain a broken-axisymmetry (BA) phase due to competitions among intra- and inter-species spin exchange interactions and the linear Zeeman shifts. This is in contrast to the case of a single species spin- 1 condensate, where the axisymmetry breaking results from competitions among the linear and quadratic Zeeman shifts and the intra-species ferromagnetic interaction. All other remaining ground state phases for the mixture are found to preserve axisymmetry. We further elaborate on the ground state phase diagram and calculate their Bogoliubov excitation spectra. For the BA phase, there exist three Goldstone modes attempting to restore the broken U(1) and SO(2) symmetries.

Atomic number fluctuations in a mixture of two spinor condensates

We study particle number fluctuations in the quantum ground states of a mixture of two spin-1 atomic condensates when the interspecies spin-exchange coupling interaction $c_{12}β$ is adjusted. The two spin-1 condensates forming the mixture are respectively ferromagnetic and polar in the absence of an external magnetic (B-) field. We categorize all possible ground states using the angular momentum algebra and compute their characteristic atom number fluctuations, focusing especially on the the AA phase (when $ c_{12}β>0$), where the ground state becomes fragmented and atomic number fluctuations exhibit drastically different features from a single stand alone spin-1 polar condensate. Our results are further supported by numerical simulations of the full quantum many-body system.

Quantum pump for counter-circulations in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

We propose a pump scheme for quantum circulations, including counter-circulations for superposition states, of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Our scheme is efficient and can be implemented within current experimental technologies and setups. It remains valid for non-classical atomic states, such as pseudo-spin squeezed states and maximal entangled N-GHZ or NooN states. Moreover, it is capable of transforming several enhanced sensing protocols relying on reduced fluctuations from quantum correlation and entanglement of atomic internal states to enhanced measurement of spatial interference and rotation.

Quantum states of a binary mixture of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the structure of quantum states for a binary mixture of spin-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. In contrast to collision between identical bosons, the s-wave scattering channel between inter-species does not conform to a fixed symmetry. The spin-dependent Hamiltonian thus contains non-commuting terms, making the exact eigenstates more challenging to obtain because they now depend more generally on both the intra- and inter-species interactions. We discuss two limiting cases, where the spin-dependent Hamiltonian reduces respectively to sums of commuting operators. All eigenstates can then be directly constructed, and they are independent of the detailed interaction parameters.

Pumping vortex into a Bose-Einstein condensate of heteronuclear molecules

Heteronuclear molecules attract wide attention due to their permanent electric dipole moments. Analogous to atoms with magnetic dipoles, the existence of nonzero electric dipoles significantly enhance possibilities and mechanisms for control and design of quantum degenerate molecule systems with electric (E-) fields. This work proposes a vortex creation mechanism inside a condensate of heteronuclear molecules through the adiabatic flipping of the axial bias of an analogous E-field Ioffe-Pritchard trap (IPT), extending the original protocol due to Ishoshima, {\it et al.}, [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{61}, 063610 (2000)] for an atomic spinor condensate inside a magnetic (B-) field IPT. We provide both analytic proof and numerical simulations to illustrate the high fidelity operation of this vortex pump protocol. We hope our work provides stimulating experimental possibilities for the active investigations in quantum degenerate molecule systems.

A binary mixture of spinor atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the ground state and classify its phase diagram for a mixture of two spin-1 condensates in the absence of external magnetic (B-) field according to atomic parameters for intra- and inter-species spin exchange coupling and singlet pairing interaction. Ignoring the inter-species singlet pairing interaction, the ground state phases are found analytically. Numerical approach of simulated annealing is adopted when the singlet pairing interaction is present. Our results on the phase diagram and the boundaries between phases allow for easy identifications of quantum phase transitions, that can be induced through the tuning of optical traps and atom numbers. They provide the first insight and guidance for several ongoing experiments on mixtures of spinor condensates.

Continuous vortex pumping into a spinor condensate with magnetic fields

We study the mechanisms and the limits of pumping vorticity into a spinor condensate through manipulations of magnetic (B-) fields. We discover a fundamental connection between the geometrical properties of the magnetic fields and the quantized circulation of magnetically trapped atoms, a result which generalizes several recent experimental and theoretical studies. The optimal procedures are devised that are capable of continuously increasing or decreasing a condensate's vorticity by repeating certain two step B-field manipulation protocols. We carry out detailed numerical simulations that support the claim that our protocols are highly efficient, stable, and robust against small imperfections of all types. Our protocols can be implemented experimentally within current technologies.
