The role of f -electrons in the Fermi surface of the heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4

We present a detailed quantum oscillation study of the Fermi surface of the recently discovered Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4 . We compare the data, obtained at fields from 10 to 45 Tesla, to band structure calculations performed using the local density approximation. Analysis of the data suggests that f-holes participate in the Fermi surface up to the highest magnetic fields studied. We comment on the significance of these findings for the unconventional superconducting properties of this material.

High Field de Haas - van Alphen Studies of the Fermi Surfaces of LaMIn$_{5}$ (M = Co, Rh, Ir)

We report measurements of the de Haas - van Alphen effect on a series of compounds, LaMIn$_{5}$ (M = Co, Rh, Ir). The results show that each of the Co and Ir Fermi surfaces (FSs) exhibit some portions that are two dimensional and some portions that are three dimensional. The most two dimensional character is exhibited in LaCoIn$_{5}$, less two dimensional behavior is seen in LaIrIn$_{5}$, no part of Fermi surface of LaRhIn$_{5}$ is found to have a two dimensional character. Thus the two dimensionality of portions of the FSs is largely determined by the d character of the energy bands while all of the effective masses remain $\leq$ 1.2. This fact has implications for the causes of the heavy fermion nature of superconductivity and magnetism in the Ce-based compounds having the similar composition and structure. All of the measurements were performed at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory using either cantilever magnetometry or field modulation methods.

Anisotropic effect of Cd and Hg doping on Pauli limited superconductor CeCoIn$_5$

We investigated the effect of Cd and Hg doping on the first order superconducting (SC) transition and the high field-low temperature SC state of CeCoIn$_5$ by measuring the specific heat of CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$Cd$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with x=0.0011, 0.0022 and 0.0033 and CeCo(In$_{\rm 1-x}$Hg$_{\rm x}$)$_5$ with x=0.00016, 0.00032, and 0.00048 at temperatures down to 0.1 K and fields up to 14 T. Cd substitution rapidly suppresses the cross-over temperature $T_{\rm 0}$, where the superconducting transition changes from second to first order, to $T$=0 K with x=0.0022 for $H\parallel$ [100], while it remains roughly constant up to x=0.0033 for $H\parallel$ [001]. The associated anomaly of the proposed FFLO state in Hg-doped samples is washed out by x=0.00048, while remaining at the same temperature, indicating high sensitivity of that state to impurities. We interpret these results as supporting the non-magnetic, possibly FFLO, origin of the high field - low temperature state in CeCoIn$_5$.

Energy scales of Lu(1-x)Yb(x)Rh2Si2 by means of thermopower investigations

We present the thermopower S(T) and the resistivity rho(T) of Lu(1-x)Yb(x)Rh2Si2 in the temperature range 3 K < T < 300 K. S(T) is found to change from two minima for dilute systems (x < 0.5) to a single large minimum in pure YbRh2Si2. A similar behavior has also been found for the magnetic contribution to the resistivity rho_mag(T). The appearance of the low-T extrema in S(T) and rho_mag(T) is attributed to the lowering of the Kondo scale with decreasing x. The evolution of the characteristic energy scales for both the Kondo effect and the crystal electric field splitting are deduced. An extrapolation allows to estimate the Kondo temperature of YbRh2Si2 to 29 K.

A precursor state to unconventional superconductivity in CeIrIn${_5}$

We present sensitive measurements of the Hall effect and magnetoresistance in CeIrIn${_5}$ down to temperatures of 50 mK and magnetic fields up to 15 T. The presence of a low temperature coherent Kondo state is established. Deviations from Kohler's rule and a quadratic temperature dependence of the cotangent of the Hall angle are reminiscent of properties observed in the high temperature superconducting cuprates. The most striking observation pertains to the presence of a \textit{precursor} state--characterized by a change in the Hall mobility--that appears to precede the superconductivity in this material, in similarity to the pseudogap in the cuprate high $T_c$ superconductors.

Magneto-optical behaviour of EuIn_2P_2

We report results of a magneto-optical investigation of the Zintl-phase compound EuIn$_2$P$_2$. The compound orders magnetically at $T_C$=24 K and exhibits concomitant large magnetoresistance effects. For $T\le$50 K and increasing magnetic fields we observe a transfer of spectral weight in $σ_1(ω)$ from energies above 1 eV into the low-energy metallic component as well as into a mid-infrared signal centered at about 600 cm$^{-1}$. This latter absorption is reminiscent to what has been seen in a large variety of so-called Kondo materials and ascribed to excitations across the hybridization gap. The observed gain of Drude weight upon increasing magnetic field suggests an enhancement of the itinerant charge-carrier concentration due to the increasing magnetization, a phenomenon that was previously observed in other compounds which exhibit colossal magnetoresistive effects.

Interacting Antiferromagnetic Droplets in Quantum Critical CeCoIn_5

The heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 can be tuned between superconducting and antiferromagnetic ground states by hole doping with Cd. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data indicate that these two orders coexist microscopically with an ordered moment ~0.7 μ_B. As the ground state evolves, there is no change in the low frequency spin dynamics in the disordered state. These results suggest that the magnetism emerges locally in the vicinity of the Cd dopants.

Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy of heavy-fermion-metal/superconductor junctions

Our previous point-contact Andreev reflection studies of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ using Au tips have shown two clear features: reduced Andreev signal and asymmetric background conductance [1]. To explore their physical origins, we have extended our measurements to point-contact junctions between single crystalline heavy-fermion metals and superconducting Nb tips. Differential conductance spectra are taken on junctions with three heavy-fermion metals, CeCoIn$_5$, CeRhIn$_5$, and YbAl$_3$, each with different electron mass. In contrast with Au/CeCoIn$_5$ junctions, Andreev signal is not reduced and no dependence on effective mass is observed. A possible explanation based on a two-fluid picture for heavy fermions is proposed. [1] W. K. Park et al., Phys. Rev. B 72 052509 (2005); W. K. Park et al., Proc. SPIE-Int. Soc. Opt. Magnetic structure of Cd-doped CeCoIn5

The heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is believed to be close to a magnetic instability, but no static magnetic order has been found. Cadmium doping on the In-site shifts the balance between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism to the latter with an extended concentration range where both types of order coexist at low temperatures. We investigated the magnetic structure of nominally 10% Cd-doped CeCoIn5, being antiferromagnetically ordered below T_N=3 K and superconducting below T_c=1.3 K, by elastic neutron scattering. Magnetic intensity was observed only at the ordering wave vector Q_AF = (1/2,1/2,1/2) commensurate with the crystal lattice. Upon entering the superconducting state the magnetic intensity seems to change only little. The commensurate magnetic ordering in CeCo(In1-xCdx)5 is in contrast to the incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering observed in the closely related compound CeRhIn5. Our results give new insights in the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in the family of CeTIn5 (T=Co, Rh, and Ir) based compounds.

Reversible Tuning of the Heavy Fermion Ground State in CeCoIn$_5$

Cadmium-doping the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ at the percent level acts as an electronic tuning agent, sensitively shifting the balance between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism and opening new ambient-pressure phase space in the study of heavy-fermion ground states.

Pressure-tuned First-order Phase Transition and Accompanying Resistivity Anomaly in CeZn_{1-δ}Sb_{2}

The Kondo lattice system CeZn_{0.66}Sb_{2} is studied by the electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements at several pressures. At P=0 kbar, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic transitions appear at 3.6 and 0.8 K, respectively. The electrical resistivity at T_N dramatically changes from the Fisher-Langer type (ferromagnetic like) to the Suzaki-Mori type near 17 kbar, i.e., from a positive divergence to a negative divergence in the temperature derivative of the resistivity. The pressure-induced SM type anomaly, which shows thermal hysteresis, is easily suppressed by small magnetic field (1.9 kOe for 19.8 kbar), indicating a weakly first-order nature of the transition. By subtracting a low-pressure data set, we directly compare the resistivity anomaly with the SM theory without any assumption on backgrounds, where the negative divergence in dρ/dT is ascribed to enhanced critical fluctuations in the presence of superzone gaps.

Critical Phenomena and the Quantum Critical Point of Ferromagnetic Zr1-xNbxZn2

We present a study of the magnetic properties of Zr1-xNbxZn2, using an Arrott plot analysis of the magnetization. The Curie temperature TC is suppressed to zero temperature for Nb concentration xC=0.083+/-0.002, while the spontaneous moment vanishes linearly with TC as predicted by the Stoner theory. The initial susceptibility chi displays critical behavior for x<=xC, with a critical exponent which smoothly crosses over from the mean field to the quantum critical value. For high temperatures and x<=xC and for low temperatures and x>=xC we find that chi^(-1)=chi_o^(-1)+aT^(4/3), where chi_o^(-1) vanishes as x approaches xC. The resulting magnetic phase diagram shows that the quantum critical behavior extends over the widest range of temperatures for x=xC, and demonstrates how a finite transition temperature ferromagnet is transformed into a paramagnet, via a quantum critical point.

Magneto-optical evidence of double exchange in a percolating lattice

Substituting $Eu$ by $Ca$ in ferromagnetic $EuB_6$ leads to a percolation limited magnetic ordering. We present and discuss magneto-optical data of the $Eu_{1-x}Ca_{x}B_6$ series, based on measurements of the reflectivity $R(ω)$ from the far infrared up to the ultraviolet, as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Via the Kramers-Kronig transformation of $R(ω)$ we extract the complete absorption spectra of samples with different values of $x$. The change of the spectral weight in the Drude component by increasing the magnetic field agrees with a scenario based on the double exchange model, and suggests a crossover from a ferromagnetic metal to a ferromagnetic Anderson insulator upon increasing $Ca$-content at low temperatures.

Unpaired Electrons in the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeCoIn_{5}

Thermal conductivity and specific heat were measured in the superconducting state of the heavy fermion material Ce_{1-x}La_{x}CoIn_{5}. With increasing impurity concentration x, the suppression of T_{c} is accompanied by the increase in the residual electronic specific heat expected of a d-wave superconductor, but it occurs in parallel with a decrease in residual electronic thermal conductivity. This contrasting behavior reveals the presence of uncondensed electrons coexisting with nodal quasiparticles. An extreme multiband scenario is proposed, with a d-wave superconducting gap on the heavy-electron sheets of the Fermi surface and a negligible gap on the light, three-dimensional pockets.

Hidden one-dimensional electronic structure and non-Fermi liquid angle resolved photoemission line shapes of $η$-Mo$_4$O$_{11}$

We report angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra of $η$-Mo$_4$O$_{11}$, a layered metal that undergoes two charge density wave (CDW) transitions at 109 K and 30 K. We have directly observed the ``hidden one-dimensional (hidden-1d)'' Fermi surface and an anisotropic gap opening associated with the 109 K transition, in agreement with the band theoretical description of the CDW transition. In addition, as in other hidden-1d materials such as NaMo$_6$O$_{17}$, the ARPES line shapes show certain anomalies, which we discuss in terms of non-Fermi liquid physics and possible roles of disorder.

Irreversible dynamics of the phase boundary in U(Ru0.9)Rh0.04)2Si2 and implications for ordering

We report measurements and analysis of the specific heat and magnetocaloric effect at the phase boundary into the single magnetic field-induced phase (phase II) of U(Ru{0.96}Rh{0.04})2Si2, which yield striking similarities to the valence transition of Yb{1-x}YxInCu4. To explain these similarities, we propose a bootstrap mechanism by which a structural distortion causes an electric quadrupolar order parameter within phase II to become coupled to the 5f-electron hybridization, giving rise to a valence change at the transition.

Severe Fermi Surface Reconstruction at a Metamagnetic-Transition in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ (for $0.2 \leq x \leq 0.5$)

We report an electrical transport study in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_4$ single crystals at high magnetic fields ($B$). For $x =0.2$, the Hall constant $R_{xy}$ decreases sharply at an anisotropic metamagnetic (MM) transition reaching its value for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ at high fields. A sharp decrease in the $A$ coefficient of the resistivity $T^2$-term and a change in the structure of the angular magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) for $B$ rotating in the planes, confirms the reconstruction of the Fermi surface (FS). Our observations and LDA calculations indicate a strong dependence of the FS on the Ca concentration and suggest the coexistence of itinerant and localized electronic states in single layered ruthenates.

Magnetic, electronic and Shubnikov-de Haas investigation of the dense Kondo system CeAgSb2

Of the dense Kondo materials in the class CeTSb2 (where T = Au, Ag, Ni, Cu, or Pd), CeAgSb2 is special due to its complex magnetic ground state, which exhibits both ferro- and anti-ferromagnetic character below an ordering temperature TO ~ 9.8 K. To further elucidate a description this magnetic ground state, we have carried out a systematic study of single crystalline CeAgSb2 by magnetic, electrical magneto-transport, and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) studies over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. We have constructed the magnetic phase diagram based solely on magnetoresistance data. Here, depending on the orientation of the magnetic field H, either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ordering occurs below TO. The resistivity of this compound below TO does not follow a simple Fermi liquid behavior, but requires an additional contribution from conduction electron scattering from boson excitations with an energy gap, D. At zero field the temperature dependent resistivity below TO is most consistent with antiferromagnetic order, based on the transport theory which includes magnon scattering. Crystal field effect theory applied to the susceptibility data yields splitting energies from the ground state to the first and second excited states of 53 K and 137 K, respectively. Although there is some uncertainty in the Kondo temperature determination, we estimate TK ~ 23 K from our analysis. In the Fermi surface studies, the measurements show very small Fermi surface sections, not predicted by band structure calculations, and the SdH amplitudes are very sensitive to field direction. Only by considering lens orbits between the main Fermi surface cylinders can the SdH results be reconciled with the Fermi surface topology predicted from band structure.
