Spin waves and electronic interactions in La2CuO4

The magnetic excitations of the square-lattice spin-1/2 antiferromagnet and high-Tc parent La2CuO4 are determined using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. Sharp spin waves with absolute intensities in agreement with theory including quantum corrections are found throughout the Brillouin zone. The observed dispersion relation shows evidence for substantial interactions beyond the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg term, which can be understood in terms of a cyclic or ring exchange due to the strong hybridization path around the Cu4O4 square plaquettes.

Fermi Surface Measurements on the Low Carrier Density Ferromagnet Ca1-xLaxB6 and SrB6

Recently it has been discovered that weak ferromagnetism of a dilute 3D electron gas develops on the energy scale of the Fermi temperature in some of the hexaborides; that is, the Curie temperature approximately equals the Fermi temperature. We report the results of de Haas-van Alphen experiments on two concentrations of La-doped CaB6 as well as Ca-deficient Ca1-dB6 and Sr-deficient Sr1-dB6. The results show that a Fermi surface exists in each case and that there are significant electron-electron interactions in the low density electron gas.

Unconventional superconductivity in CeIrIn$_5$ and CeCoIn$_5$: Specific heat and thermal conductivity studies

Low temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements on the ambient pressure heavy fermion superconductors CeIrIn5 and CeCoIn5 reveal power law temperature dependences of these quantities below T$_c$. The low temperature specific heat in both CeIrIn5 and CeCoIn5 includes T$^2$ terms, consistent with the presence of nodes in the superconducting energy gap. The thermal conductivity data present a T-linear term consistent with the universal limit (CeIrIn5), and a low temperature T$^3$ variation in the clean limit (CeCoIn5), also in accord with prediction for an unconventional superconductor with lines of nodes.

Heavy-fermion superconductivity in CeCoIn5 at 2.3K

We report the observation of heavy-fermion superconducitivity in CeCoIn5 at Tc =2.3 K. When compared to the pressure-induced Tc of its cubic relative CeIn3 (Tc ~200 mK), the Tc of CeCoIn5 is remarkably high. We suggest that this difference may arise from magnetically mediated superconductivity in the layered crystal structure of CeCoIn5 .

Incommensurate magnetic structure of CeRhIn5

The magnetic structure of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn5 is determined using neutron diffraction. We find a magnetic wave vector q_M=(1/2,1/2,0.297), which is temperature independent up to T_N=3.8K. A staggered moment of 0.374(5) Bohr magneton at 1.4K, residing on the Ce ion, spirals transversely along the c axis. The nearest neighbor moments on the tetragonal basal plane are aligned antiferromagnetically.

The Fermi surface of CeCoIn5: dHvA

Measurements of the de Haas - van Alphen effect in the normal state of the heavy Fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 have been carried out using a torque cantilever at temperatures ranging from 20 to 500 mK and in fields up to 18 tesla. Angular dependent measurements of the extremal Fermi surface areas reveal a more extreme two dimensional sheet than is found in either CeRhIn5 or CeIrIn5. The effective masses of the measured frequencies range from 9 to 20 m*/m0.

Anisotropic three-dimentional magnetic fluctuations in heavy fermion CeRhIn5

CeRhIn5 is a heavy fermion antiferromagnet that orders at 3.8 K. The observation of pressure-induced superconductivity in CeRhIn5 at a very high Tc of 2.1 K for heavy fermion materials has led to speculations regarding to its magnetic fluctuation spectrum. Using magnetic neutron scattering, we report anisotropic three-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations with an energy scale of less than 1.7 meV for temperatures as high as 3Tc. In addition, the effect of the magnetic fluctuations on electrical resistivity is well described by the Born approximation.

Anomalous NMR Spin-Lattice Relaxation in SrB_{6} and Ca_{1-x}La_{x}B_{6}

We report the results of {11}B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of SrB_{6} and Ca_{0.995}La_{0.05}B_{6} below room temperature. Although the electrical resistivities of these two materials differ substantially, their {11}B-NMR responses exhibit some strikingly common features. Both materials exhibit ferromagnetic order, but their {11}B-NMR spectra reveal very small hyperfine fields at the Boron sites. The spin lattice relaxation T_{1}^{-1} varies considerably with external field but changes with temperature only below a few K. We discuss these unusual results by considering various different scenarios for the electronic structure of these materials.

Coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in CeRh1-xIrxIn5

We report a thermodynamic and transport study of the phase diagram of CeRh1-xIrxIn5. Superconductivity is observed over a broad range of doping, 0.3 < x < 1, including a substantial range of concentration (0.3 < x <0.6) over which it coexists with magnetic order (which is observed for 0 < x < 0.6). The anomalous transition to zero resistance that is observed in CeIrIn5 is robust against Rh substitution. In fact, the observed bulk Tc in CeRh0.5Ir0.5In5 is more than double that of CeIrIn5, whereas the zero-resistance transition temperature is relatively unchanged for 0.5 < x < 1.

Superconductivity and Magnetism in a New Class of Heavy-Fermion Materials

We report a new family of Ce-based heavy-fermion compounds whose electronic specific heat coefficients range from about 400 to over 700 mJ/mole Ce-K2. Crystal in this family form as CenTmIn3n+2m, where T=Rh or Ir, n=1 or 2, and m=1, with a tetragonal structure that can be viewed as n-layers of CeIn3 units stacked sequentially along the c-axis with intervening m-layers of TIn2. Ambient and high pressure studies show that the quasi-2D layers of CeIn3 produce unconventional superconducting and magnetic ground states. This family should enable new understanding of the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in heavy-fermion materials and more generally of why heavy-fermion superconductivity prefers to develop in one structure type and not another.

A New Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CeIrIn5: Relative of the Cuprates?

CeIrIn5 is a member of a new family of heavy-fermion compounds and has a Sommerfeld specific heat coefficient of 720 mJ/mol-K2. It exhibits a bulk, thermodynamic transition to a superconducting state at Tc=0.40 K, below which the specific heat decreases as T2 to a small residual T-linear value. Surprisingly, the electrical resistivity drops below instrumental resolution at a much higher temperature T0=1.2 K. These behaviors are highly reproducible and field-dependent studies indicate that T0 and Tc arise from the same underlying electronic structure. The layered crystal structure of CeIrIn5 suggests a possible analogy to the cuprates in which spin/charge pair correlations develop well above Tc.

Electronic Structure of CeRhIn$_{5}$: dHvA and Energy Band Calculations

The de Haas - van Alphen effect and energy band calculations are used to study angular dependent extremal areas and effective masses of the Fermi surface of the highly correlated antiferromagnetic material CeRhIn$_5$. The agreement between experiment and theory is reasonable for the areas measured with the field applied along the (100) axis of the tetragonal structure, but disagree in size for the areas observed for the field applied along the (001) axis where the antiferromagnetic spin alignment is occurring. Detailed comparisons between experiment and theory are given.

Magnetoresistance From Quantum Interference Effects in Ferromagnets

The desire to maximize the sensitivity of read/write heads and thus the information density of magnetic storage devices has produced an intense interest in the magnetoresistance (MR) of magnetic materials. Recent discoveries include "colossal" MR of the manganites1-4 and the enhanced MR of low carrier density ferromagnets4-6. In the low carrier density systems investigated to date as well as the manganites, a key feature is that the electrical conduction is due to a different set of electrons than the localized electrons responsible for the magnetism. Here we propose a mechanism for ferromagnetic MR originating from quantum interference effects, rather than simple scattering. The new mechanism obtains in disordered low carrier density magnets where the magnetism as well as the electrical conduction are due to the same electrons. Here the MR is positive and only weakly temperature dependent below the Curie point. This is very different from the MR seen when conduction electrons and local moments can be treated separately, in which case the MR is negative and strongly peaked at the Curie point.

Fermi Surface Properties of Low Concentration Ce$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$B$_{6}$: dHvA

The de Haas-van Alphen effect is used to study angular dependent extremal areas of the Fermi Surfaces (FS) and effective masses of Ce$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$B$% _{6}$ alloys for $x$ between 0 and 0.05. The FS of these alloys was previously observed to be spin polarized at low Ce concentration ($x$ = 0.05). This work gives the details of the initial development of the topology and spin polarization of the FS from that of unpolarized metallic LaB$_{6}$ to that of spin polarized heavy Fermion CeB$_{6}$ .

Magnetic Field Dependence of the Paramagnetic to the High Temperature Magnetically Ordered Phase Transition in CeB6

We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the paramagnetic to high temperature magnetically ordered phase transition TQ(H) in CeB6 from 2 to 30 T using cantilever magnetometry. It is found that the phase separation temperature continuously increases in field with an increasingly positive slope. In addition, we find that measurements in strong magnetic field gradients have no effect on the phase transition.

Magnetotransport in the low carrier density ferromagnet EuB_6

We present a magnetotransport study of the low--carrier density ferromagnet EuB_6. This semimetallic compound, which undergoes two ferromagnetic transitions at T_l = 15.3 K and T_c = 12.5 K, exhibits close to T_l a colossal magnetoresistivity (CMR). We quantitatively compare our data to recent theoretical work, which however fails to explain our observations. We attribute this disagreement with theory to the unique type of magnetic polaron formation in EuB_6.
