Nonperturbative investigation of the diquark potential

We perform an investigation of the static quark-quark-potential both in the confined and the deconfined phase. We discuss conceptual and technical problems and present first results of an exploratory numerical investigation.

Topology with Dynamical Overlap Fermions

We perform dynamical QCD simulations with $n_f=2$ overlap fermions by hybrid Monte-Carlo method on $6^4$ to $8^3\times 16$ lattices. We study the problem of topological sector changing. A new method is proposed which works without topological sector changes. We use this new method to determine the topological susceptibility at various quark masses.

Upper Bounds on the Neutrino-Nucleon Inelastic Cross Section

Extraterrestrial neutrinos can initiate deeply developing air showers, and those that traverse the atmosphere unscathed may produce cascades in the ice or water. Up to now, no such events have been observed. This can be translated into upper limits on the diffuse neutrino flux. On the other hand, the observation of cosmic rays with primary energies > 10^{10} GeV suggests that there is a guaranteed flux of cosmogenic neutrinos, arising from the decay of charged pions (and their muon daughters) produced in proton interactions with the cosmic microwave background. In this work, armed with these cosmogenic neutrinos and the increased exposure of neutrino telescopes we bring up-to-date model-independent upper bounds on the neutrino-nucleon inelastic cross section. Uncertainties in the cosmogenic neutrino flux are discussed and taken into account in our analysis. The prospects for improving these bounds with the Pierre Auger Observatory are also estimated. The unprecedented statistics to be collected by this experiment in 6 yr of operation will probe the neutrino-nucleon inelastic cross section at the level of Standard Model predictions.

A comprehensive search for the Θ^+ pentaquark on the lattice

We study spin 1/2 isoscalar and isovector, even and odd parity candidates for the $Θ^+(1540)$ pentaquark particle using large scale lattice QCD simulations. Previous lattice works led to inconclusive results because so far it has not been possible to unambiguously identify the known scattering spectrum and tell whether additionally a genuine pentaquark state also exists. Here we carry out this analysis using several possible wave functions (operators). Linear combinations of those have a good chance of spanning both the scattering and pentaquark states. Our operator basis is the largest in the literature, and it also includes spatially non-trivial ones with unit orbital angular momentum. The cross correlator we compute is 14$\times$14 with 60 non-vanishing elements. We can clearly distinguish the lowest scattering state(s) in both parity channels up to above the expected location of the pentaquark, but we find no trace of the latter. Based on that we conclude that there are most probably no pentaquark bound states at our quark masses, corresponding to $m_π$=400--630 MeV. However, we cannot rule out the existence of a pentaquark state at the physical quark mass corresponding to $m_π$=135 MeV or pentaquarks with a more exotic wave function.

Grand canonical potential for a static quark--anti-quark pair at finite T/mu

We present numerical results on the static quark--anti-quark grand canonical potential in full QCD at non-vanishing temperature ($T$) and quark chemical potential ($μ$). Non-zero $μ$-s are reached by means of multi-parameter reweighting. The dynamical staggered simulations were carried out for $n_f=2+1$ flavors with physical quark masses on $4\times 12^3$ lattices.

Dynamical overlap fermions, results with HMC algorithm

We present results of a hybrid Monte-Carlo algorithm for dynamical, $n_f=2$, four-dimensional QCD with overlap fermions. The fermionic force requires careful treatment, when changing topological sectors. The pion mass dependence of the topological susceptibility is studied on $6^4$ and $12\cdot 6^3$ lattices. The results are transformed into physical units.

The status of pentaquark spectroscopy on the lattice

The present work is a summary of the status of lattice pentaquark calculations. After a pedagogic introduction to the basics of lattice hadron spectroscopy we give a critical comparison of results presently available in the literature. Special emphasis is put on presenting some of the possible pitfalls of these calculations. In particular we discuss at length the choice of the hadronic operators and the separation of genuine five-quark states from meson-baryon scattering states.

Pentaquark hadrons from lattice QCD

We study spin 1/2 isoscalar and isovector candidates in both parity channels for the recently discovered Θ^+(1540) pentaquark particle in quenched lattice QCD. Our analysis takes into account all possible uncertainties, such as statistical, finite size and quenching errors when performing the chiral and continuum extrapolations and we have indications that our signal is separated from scattering states. The lowest mass that we find in the I^P=0^- channel is in complete agreement with the experimental value of the Θ^+ mass. On the other hand, the lowest mass state in the opposite parity I^P=0^+ channel is much higher. Our findings suggests that the parity of the Θ^+ is negative.

Strong Neutrino-Nucleon Interactions at Ultrahigh Energies as a Solution to the GZK Puzzle

After a short review of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray puzzle - the apparent observation of cosmic rays originating from cosmological distances with energies above the expected Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff 4x10^{19} eV - we consider strongly interacting neutrino scenarios as an especially interesting solution. We show that all features of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray spectrum from 10^{17} eV to 10^{21} eV can be described to originate from a simple power-like injection spectrum of protons, under the assumption that the neutrino-nucleon cross-section is significantly enhanced at center of mass energies above ~ 100 TeV. In such a scenario, the cosmogenic neutrinos produced during the propagation of protons through the cosmic microwave background initiate air showers in the atmosphere, just as the protons. The total air shower spectrum induced by protons and neutrinos shows excellent agreement with the observations. We shortly discuss TeV-scale extensions of the Standard Model which may lead to a realization of a strongly interacting neutrino scenario. We emphasize, however, that such a scenario may even be realized within the standard electroweak model: electroweak instanton/sphaleron induced processes may get strong at ultrahigh energies. Possible tests of strongly interacting neutrino scenarios range from observations at cosmic ray facilities and neutrino telescopes to searches at lepton nucleon scattering experiments.

Critical point of QCD at finite T and μ, lattice results for physical quark masses

A critical point (E) is expected in QCD on the temperature (T) versus baryonic chemical potential (μ) plane. Using a recently proposed lattice method for μ\neq 0 we study dynamical QCD with n_f=2+1 staggered quarks of physical masses on L_t=4 lattices. Our result for the critical point is T_E=162 \pm 2 MeV and μ_E= 360 \pm 40 MeV. For the critical temperature at μ=0 we obtained T_c=164 \pm 2 MeV. This work extends our previous study [Z. Fodor and S.D.Katz, JHEP 0203 (2002) 014] by two means. It decreases the light quark masses (m_{u,d}) by a factor of three down to their physical values. Furthermore, in order to approach the thermodynamical limit we increase our largest volume by a factor of three. As expected, decreasing m_{u,d} decreased μ_E. Note, that the continuum extrapolation is still missing

Azimuthal dependence of collective expansion for symmetric heavy ion collisions

Detailed studies of the azimuthal dependence of the mean fragment and flow energies in the Au+Au and Xe+CsI systems are reported as a function of incident energy and centrality. Comparisons between data and model calculations show that the flow energy values along different azimuthal directions could be viewed as snapshots of the fireball expansion with different exposure times. For the same number of participating nucleons more transversally elongated participant shapes from the heavier system produce less collective transverse energy. Good agreement with BUU calculations is obtained for a soft nuclear equation of state.

Finite T/μlattice QCD and the critical point

We present results on lattice QCD at finite temperature (T) and chemical potential (μ). We apply the overlap-improving multi-parameter reweighting technique for n_f=4 and 2+1 staggered QCD. We use semi-realistic masses on L_t=4 lattices. The critical endpoint (E) of 2+1 flavour QCD on the μ-T plane is located. Our results are based on {\cal{O}}(10^3-10^4) configurations.

The QCD equation of state at finite T/μon the lattice

We present N_t=4 lattice results for the equation of state of 2+1 flavour staggered, dynamical QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential. We use the overlap improving multi-parameter reweighting technique to extend the equation of state for non-vanishing chemical potentials. The results are obtained along the line of constant physics. Our physical parameters extend in temperature and baryon chemical potential upto \approx 500-600 MeV.

Dynamical overlap fermions, results with hybrid Monte-Carlo algorithm

We present first, exploratory results of a hybrid Monte-Carlo algorithm for dynamical, n_f=2, four-dimensional QCD with overlap fermions. As expected, the computational requirements are typically two orders of magnitude larger for the dynamical overlap formalism than for the more conventional (Wilson or staggered) formulations.

Strongly interacting neutrinos as the highest energy cosmic rays

We show that all features of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray spectrum from 10^{17} eV to 10^{21} eV can be described with a simple power-like injection spectrum of protons under the assumption that the neutrino-nucleon cross-section is significantly enhanced at center of mass energies above \approx 100 TeV. In our scenario, the cosmogenic neutrinos produced during the propagation of protons through the cosmic microwave background initiate air showers in the atmosphere, just as the protons. The total air shower spectrum induced by protons and neutrinos shows excellent agreement with the observations. A particular possibility for a large neutrino-nucleon cross-section exists within the Standard Model through electroweak instanton-induced processes.

Bounds on the cosmogenic neutrino flux

Under the assumption that some part of the observed highest energy cosmic rays consists of protons originating from cosmological distances, we derive bounds on the associated flux of neutrinos generated by inelastic processes with the cosmic microwave background photons. We exploit two methods. First, a power-like injection spectrum is assumed. Then, a model-independent technique, based on the inversion of the observed proton flux, is presented. The inferred lower bound is quite robust. As expected, the upper bound depends on the unknown composition of the highest energy cosmic rays. Our results represent benchmarks for all ultrahigh energy neutrino telescopes.
