Data blinding for the nEDM experiment at PSI

Psychological bias towards, or away from, a prior measurement or a theory prediction is an intrinsic threat to any data analysis. While various methods can be used to avoid the bias, e.g. actively not looking at the result, only data blinding is a traceable and thus trustworthy method to circumvent the bias and to convince a public audience that there is not even an accidental psychological bias. Data blinding is nowadays a standard practice in particle physics, but it is particularly difficult for experiments searching for the neutron electric dipole moment, as several cross measurements, in particular of the magnetic field, create a self-consistent network into which it is hard to inject a fake signal. We present an algorithm that modifies the data without influencing the experiment. Results of an automated analysis of the data are used to change the recorded spin state of a few neutrons of each measurement cycle. The flexible algorithm is applied twice to the data, to provide different data to various analysis teams. This gives us the option to sequentially apply various blinding offsets for separate analysis steps with independent teams. The subtle modification of the data allows us to modify the algorithm and to produce a re-blinded data set without revealing the blinding secret. The method was designed for the 2015/2016 measurement campaign of the nEDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. However, it can be re-used with minor modification for the follow-up experiment n2EDM, and may be suitable for comparable efforts.

On energy cascades in non-homogeneous 3D Navier-Stokes equations

We show - in the framework of physical scales and $(K_1,K_2)$-averages - that Kolmogorov's dissipation law combined with the smallness condition on a Taylor length scale are sufficient to guarantee energy cascades in the forced Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, in the periodic case we establish restrictive scaling laws - in terms of Grashof number - for kinetic energy, energy flux, and energy dissipation rate. These are used to improve our sufficient condition for forced cascades in physical scales.

A spatially localized $L \log L$ estimate on the vorticity in the 3D NSE

The purpose of this note is to present a spatially localized $L \log L$ bound on the vorticity in the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, assuming a very mild, \emph{purely geometric} condition. This yields an extra-log decay of the distribution function of the vorticity, which in turn implies \emph{breaking the criticality} in a physically, numerically, and mathematical analysis-motivated blow-up scenario based on vortex stretching and anisotropic diffusion.

Energy Cascades in Physical Scales of 3D Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

The existence of a total energy cascade and the scale-locality of the total energy flux are rigorously established working directly from the 3D MHD equations and under assumptions consistent with physical properties of turbulent plasmas. Secondary results are included identifying scenarios where inertial effects on specific energies effect cascade-like behavior as well as a scenario in which the inter-field energy transfer is predominantly from the fluid to the magnetic field.

On the transport and concentration of enstrophy in 3D magnetohydrodynamic turbulence

Working directly from the 3D magnetohydrodynamical equations and entirely in physical scales we formulate a scenario wherein the enstrophy flux exhibits cascade-like properties. In particular we show the inertially-driven transport of current and vorticity enstrophy is from larger to smaller scale structures and this inter-scale transfer is local and occurs at a nearly constant rate. This process is reminiscent of the direct cascades exhibited by certain ideal invariants in turbulent plasmas. Our results are consistent with the physically and numerically supported picture that current and vorticity concentrate on small-scale, coherent structures.

Coherent vortex structures and 3D enstrophy cascade

Existence of 2D enstrophy cascade in a suitable mathematical setting, and under suitable conditions compatible with 2D turbulence phenomenology, is known both in the Fourier and in the physical scales. The goal of this paper is to show that the same geometric condition preventing the formation of singularities - 1/2-Hölder coherence of the vorticity direction - coupled with a suitable condition on a modified Kraichnan scale, and under a certain modulation assumption on evolution of the vorticity, leads to existence of 3D enstrophy cascade in physical scales of the flow.
