Using quantitative magneto-optical imaging to reveal why the ac susceptibility of superconducting films is history-independent

Measurements of the temperature-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility of superconducting films reveal reversible responses, i.e., irrespective of the magnetic and thermal history of the sample. This experimental fact is observed even in the presence of stochastic and certainly irreversible magnetic flux avalanches which, in principle, should randomly affect the results. In this work, we explain such an apparent contradiction by exploring the spatial resolution of magneto-optical imaging. To achieve this, we successfully compare standard frequency-independent first harmonic ac magnetic susceptibility results for a superconducting thin film with those obtained by ac-emulating magneto-optical imaging (acMOI). A quantitative analysis also provides information regarding flux avalanches, reveals the presence of a vortex-antivortex annihilation zone in the region in which a smooth flux front interacts with pre-established avalanches, and demonstrates that the major impact on the flux distribution within the superconductor happens during the first ac cycle. Our results establish acMOI as a reliable approach for studying frequency-independent ac field effects in superconducting thin films while capturing local aspects of flux dynamics, otherwise inaccessible via global magnetometry techniques.

Magnetic-field-orientation-dependent triplet supercurrents in Josephson junctions with symmetric and asymmetric exchange-spring interfaces

Josephson junctions with s-wave superconductors (S) and multiple ferromagnetic (F) layers carry spin-triplet supercurrents in the presence of magnetically inhomogeneous spin-mixer interfaces. Here, we report magnetic Josephson junctions with exchange-spring and double exchange-spring ("spin-mixer") Co/Py interfaces. At the Co/Py interface, exchange coupling is strong with respect to the magnetic anisotropy of Py and so, depending on the direction and magnitude of an external magnetic field, a non-collinear magnetic structure forms in Py creating the necessary magnetic inhomogeneity for singlet-to-triplet pair conversion. We detect supercurrents through Py with a thickness exceeding 10 nm, which is much larger than the singlet pair coherence length, suggesting the propagation of magnetically tuneable triplet supercurrents.

Pure 2nd harmonic current phase relation in Spin filter Josephson junctions

Higher harmonics in current phase relations of Josephson Junctions (JJs) are predicted to be observed when the first harmonic is suppressed. Conventional theoretical models predict higher harmonics to be extremely sensitive to changes in barrier thickness, temperature, etc. In contrast, experiments with JJs incorporating a spin dependent tunnelling barrier reported here reveal a current phase relation for highly spin polarized barriers which is purely 2nd harmonic in nature, and this is insensitive to changes in barrier thickness. This observation is consistent with recent theoretical predictions of a robust 2nd harmonic current phase relation for certain JJs with ferromagnetic barriers and implies that the standard theory of Cooper pair transport through tunnelling barriers is not applicable for spin dependent tunnelling barriers.

Degradation of Ag/Si multilayers during heat treatments

Microstructure changes during annealing of nano-crystalline silver and amorphous silicon multilayers (Ag/a-Si) have been studied by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The dc-magnetron sputtered Ag/a-Si multilayers remained stable even after annealing at 523K for 10h, and microstructural changes occurred only above 600K. The degradation of Ag/a-Si multilayers can be described by the increase of size of Ag grains, formation of grooves and pinholes at Ag grain boundaries and by the diffusion of silicon atoms through the silver grain boundaries and along the Ag/a-Si interfaces. This results in thinning of a-Si layers, and in formation of Ag granulates after longer annealing times.

Photoinduced time-resolved electrodynamics of superconducting metals and alloys

The photoexcited state in superconducting metals and alloys was studied via pump-probe spectroscopy. A pulsed Ti:sapphire laser was used to create the non-equilibrium state and the far-infrared pulses of a synchrotron storage ring, to which the laser is synchronized, measured the changes in the material optical properties. Both the time- and frequency- dependent photoinduced spectra of Pb, Nb, NbN, Nb{0.5}Ti{0.5}N, and Pb{0.75}Bi{0.25} superconducting thin films were measured in the low-fluence regime. The time dependent data establish the regions where the relaxation rate is dominated either by the phonon escape time (phonon bottleneck effect) or by the intrinsic quasiparticle recombination time. The photoinduced spectra measure directly the reduction of the superconducting gap due to an excess number of quasiparticles created by the short laser pulses. This gap shift allows us to establish the temperature range over which the low fluence approximation is valid.

Investigation of the growth and magnetic properties of highly oriented films of the Heusler alloy Co2MnSi on GaAs(001)

Highly (001) oriented thin films of Co2MnSi have been grown on lattice matched GaAs(001) without a buffer layer. Stoichiometric films exhibited a saturation magnetization slightly reduced from the bulk value and films grown at the highest substrate temperature of 689 K showed the lowest resistivity (33 micro.ohm.cm at 4.2 K) and the lowest coercivity (14 Oe). The spin polarization of the transport current was found to be of the order of 55% as determined by point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The reduced magnetization obtained was attributed to the antiferromagnetic Mn2As phase. Twofold in-plane magnetic anisotropy was observed due to the inequivalence of the <110> directions, and this was attributed to the nature of the bonding at the reconstructed GaAs surface.

Controlling the exchange interaction using the spin-flip transition of antiferromagnetic spins in Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ / $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$

We report studies of exchange bias and coercivity in ferromagnetic Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ layers coupled to antiferromagnetic (AF) (0001), (11$\bar{2}$0), and (11$\bar{0}$2) $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ layers. We show that AF spin configurations which permit spin-flop coupling give rise to a strong uniaxial anisotropy and hence a large coercivity, and that by annealing in magnetic fields parallel to specific directions in the AF we can control either coercivity or exchange bias. In particular, we show for the first time that a reversible temperature-induced spin reorientation in the AF can be used to control the exchange interaction.

Critical currents in vicinal YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films

Most measurements of critical current densities in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ thin films to date have been performed on films where the \textit{c}-axis is grown normal to the film surface. With such films, the analysis of the dependence of $j_c$ on the magnetic field angle is complex. The effects of extrinsic contributions to the angular field dependence of $j_c$, such as the measurement geometry and disposition of pinning centres, are convoluted with those intrinsically due to the anisotropy of the material. As a consequence of this, it is difficult to distinguish between proposed FLL structure models on the basis of angular critical current density measurements on \textit{c}-axis films. Films grown on mis-cut (vicinal) substrates have a reduced measurement symmetry and thus provide a greater insight into the critical current anisotropy. In this paper previous descriptions of the magnetic field angle dependence of $j_c$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ are reviewed. Measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ thin films grown on a range of vicinal substrates are presented and the results interpreted in terms of the structure and dimensionality of the FLL in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. There is strong evidence for a transition in the structure of the flux line lattice depending on magnetic field magnitude, orientation and temperature. As a consequence, a simple scaling law can not, by itself, describe the observed critical current anisotropy in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. The experimentally obtained $j_c(θ)$ behaviour of YBCO is successfully described in terms of a kinked vortex structure for fields applied near parallel to the \textit{a-b} planes.

High Curie temperatures in ferromagnetic Cr-doped AlN thin films

Al1-xCrxN thin films with $0.02\le x \le 0.1$ were deposited by reactive co-sputtering onto c-plane (001) sapphire. Room-temperature ferromagnetism with a coercive field of 85 Oe was observed in samples with chromium contents as low as x = 0.027 (2.7%). With increasing Cr content the mean magnetic moment is strongly suppressed, with a maximum saturation moment of 0.62 and 0.71 $μ_B$ per Cr atom at 300 and 50 K respectively. We show that the Curie temperature of Al1-xCrxN for x = 0.027 is greater than 900 K.

Structural, magnetic and transport properties of thin films of the Heusler alloy Co2MnSi

Thin films of Co2MnSi have been grown on a-plane sapphire substrates from three elemental targets by dc magnetron co-sputtering. These films are single phase, have a strong (110) texture and a saturation magnetization of 4.95 uB/formula unit at 10 K. Films grown at the highest substrate temperature of 715 K showed the lowest resistivity (47 uOhm cm at 4.2 K) and the lowest coercivity (18 Oe). The spin polarization of the transport current was found to be of the order of 54% as determined by point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. A decrease in saturation magnetization with decreasing film thickness and different transport behaviour in thinner films indicate a graded disorder in these films grown on non-lattice matched substrates.

Orientation Dependence of Ferroelectric Properties of Pulsed-Laser-Ablated Bi4-xNdxTi3O12 Films

Epitaxial (001)-, (118)-, and (104)-oriented Nd-doped Bi4Ti3O12 films have been grown by pulsed-laser deposition from a Bi4-xNdxTi3O12 (x=0.85) target on SrRuO3 coated single-crystal (100)-, (110)-, and (111)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates, respectively. X-ray diffraction illustrated a unique epitaxial relationship between film and substrate for all orientations. We observed a strong dependence of ferroelectric properties on the film orientation, with no ferroelectric activity in an (001)-oriented film; a remanent polarization, 2Pr, of 12 microC/cm2 and coercive field, Ec, of 120 kV/cm in a (118)-oriented film; and 2Pr = 40 microC/cm2, Ec = 50 kV/cm in a (104)-oriented film. The lack of ferroelectric activity along the c-axis is consistent with the orthorhombic nature of the crystal structure of the bulk material, as determined by powder neutron diffraction.

The critical current of YBa2Cu3O7-d Low Angle Grain Boundaries

Transport critical current measurements have been performed on 5 degree [001]-tilt thin film YBa2Cu3O7-delta single grain boundaries with magnetic field rotated in the plane of the film, phi. The variation of the critical current has been determined as a function of the angle between the magnetic field and the grain boundary plane. In applied fields above 1 T the critical current, j_c, is found to be strongly suppressed only when the magnetic field is within an angle phi_k of the grain boundary. Outside this angular range the behavior of the artificial grain boundary is dominated by the critical current of the grains. We show that the phi dependence of j_c in the suppressed region is well described by a flux cutting model.

Flux line lattice structure and behaviour in anti-phase boundary free vicinal YBa2Cu3O7-d thin films

Field angle dependent critical current, magneto-optical microscopy, and high resolution electron microscopy studies have been performed on YBa2Cu3O7-d thin films grown on mis-cut substrates. High resolution electron microscopy images show that the films studied exhibited clean epitaxial growth with a low density of anti-phase boundaries and stacking faults. Any anti-phase boundaries (APBs) formed near the film substrate interface rapidly healed rather than extending through the thickness of the film. Unlike vicinal films grown on annealed substrates, which contain a high density of anti-phase boundaries, magneto optical imaging showed no filamentary flux penetration in the films studied. The flux penetration is, however, asymmetric. This is associated with intrinsic pinning of flux strings by the tilted a-b planes and the dependence of the pinning force on the angle between the local field and the a-b planes. Field angle dependent critical current measurements exhibited the striking vortex channelling effect previously reported in vicinal films. By combining the results of three complementary characterisation techniques it is shown that extended APB free films exhibit markedly different critical current behaviour as compared to APB rich films. This is attributed to the role of APB sites as strong pinning centres for Josephson string vortices between the a-b planes.

Vortex Channeling and the V-I Characteristic of YBa2Cu3O7 Low Angle Grain Boundaries

We have performed V-I measurements on a thin film YBa2Cu3O7 4^o [001] tilt low angle grain boundary over an extensive range of temperature and field, verifying the presence of a linear characteristic. We report on the occurrence of the linear characteristic in its basic form and on the observation of V-I kinking into several, and in some cases numerous, linear segments. We interpret these findings in terms of a variation in the dissipative width at the grain boundary. Kinking from one linear V-I section to another of different gradient is described in terms of a change in the number of vortex rows being viscously channeled along the boundary.

Effects of interlayer coupling on the irreversibility lines of NbN/AlN superconducting multilayers

We have studied the temperature dependence of the in-plane resistivity of NbN/AlN multilayer samples with varying insulating layer thickness in magnetic fields up to 7 Tesla parallel and perpendicular to the films. The upper critical field shows a crossover from 2D to 3D behavior in parallel fields. The irreversibility lines have the form (1-T/Tc)^alpha, where alpha varies from 4/3 to 2 with increasing anisotropy. The results are consistent with simultaneous melting and decoupling transitions for low anisotropy sample, and with melting of decoupled pancakes in the superconducting layers for higher anisotropy samples.

Penetration depth and conductivity of NbN and DyBa_2Cu_3O_7 thin films measured by mm-wave transmission

Using mm-wave transmission we obtain information about both the real and imaginary part of the dielectric function of superconducting thin films. This is done by fitting the Fabry-Perot resonance spectrum for the film plus substrate over a broad frequency range (110-180 GHz) using the full Fresnel equations and a two-fluid description for the dielectric function. Depending on the thickness of the film, the transmission is mainly determined by the real or the imaginary part of the dielectric function. For NbN we find a behavior consistent with the BCS-formalism. For DyBa_2Cu_3O_7, results on films of thicknesses ranging from 20 to 80 nm are presented. We find a quadratic temperature dependence of the penetration depth at low temperatures and a strongly enhanced conductivity below T_c, indicative of a strong reduction of the quasiparticle scattering. For the 20 nm film the transmission is dominated by the real part of the conductivity, even down to 60 K.

Grazing Incidence Infrared Reflectivity of La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ and NbN

Infrared reflectivity measurements, using p-polarized light at a grazing angle of incidence, show an increased sensitivity to the optical conductivity of highly reflecting superconducting materials. We demonstrate that when this measurement technique is applied to the conventional s-wave superconductor NbN, the results are in perfect agreement with BCS theory. For the in-plane response of a La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ single crystal, in the superconducting state, we find a reduction of the optical conductivity in the frequency range below 20 meV. The observed frequency dependence excludes an isotropic s-wave gap, but agrees well with model calculations assuming a d-wave order parameter.
