Spin excitations in the quantum dipolar magnet Yb(BaBO$_3$)$_3$

We report results of magnetization, specific-heat and muon-spin relaxation measurements on single crystals of disorder-free Yb$^{3+}$ triangular lattice Yb(BaBO$_3$)$_3$. The magnetization experiments show anisotropic magnetic properties with Curie-Weiss temperatures $θ_{\perp}=-1.40$~K ($H \perp c$) and $θ_{\parallel}=-1.16$~K ($H \parallel c$) determined from low temperature data. The absence of both long-range antiferromagnetic order and spin freezing is confirmed down to 0.27 K at zero field. A two-level Schottky anomaly due to the opening of the ground-state Kramers doublet is observed from the low-temperature specific-heat measurements when the applied magnetic fields $μ_0H >0.7$~T. At zero field, the increase of both $C_{\rm mag}/T$ and the muon spin relaxation rate $λ$ below 1~K is due to the electronic spin excitations, which often exist in quantum magnets where dipole-dipole interaction creates an anisotropy of magnetic properties. The spin excitation is also supported by the unusual maximum of field dependence of $λ$ due to the field-induced increase of the density of excitations. We argue that dipolar interaction is dominant and induces the spin dynamics in the quantum magnet Yb(BaBO$_3$)$_3$.

Pressure-induced monotonic enhancement of Tc to over 30 K in the superconducting Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films

The successful synthesis of superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films with the highest Tc ~ 15 K has reignited great enthusiasms on this family of potential analogue to high-Tc cuprates. Pursuing a higher Tc is always an imperative task in studying a new superconducting material system. Here we report high-quality Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films with Tconset ~ 17 K synthesized by carefully tuning the amount of CaH2 in the topological chemical reduction and the effect of pressure on its superconducting properties by measuring electrical resistivity under various pressures in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that the onset temperature of the superconductivity, Tconset, can be enhanced monotonically from ~ 17 K at ambient pressure to ~ 31 K at 12.1 GPa without showing signatures of saturation upon increasing pressure. This encouraging result indicates that the Tc of infinite-layer nickelates superconductors still has room to go higher and it can be further boosted by applying higher pressures or strain engineering in the heterostructure films.

Fluctuating magnetic droplets immersed in a sea of quantum spin liquid

The search of quantum spin liquid (QSL), an exotic magnetic state with strongly-fluctuating and highly-entangled spins down to zero temperature, is a main theme in current condensed matter physics. However, there is no smoking-gun evidence for deconfined spinons in any QSL candidate so far. The disorders and competing exchange interactions may prevent the formation of an ideal QSL state on frustrated spin lattices. Here we report comprehensive and systematic measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, ultra-low temperature specific heat, muon spin relaxation (muSR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and thermal conductivity for NaYbSe2 single crystals, in which Yb3+ ions with effective spin-1/2 form a perfect triangular lattice. All these complementary techniques find no evidence of long-range magnetic order down to their respective base temperatures. Instead, specific heat, muSR and NMR measurements suggest the coexistence of quasi-static and dynamic spins in NaYbSe2. The scattering from these quasi-static spins may cause the absence of magnetic thermal conductivity. Thus, we propose a scenario of fluctuating ferrimagnetic droplets immersed in a sea of QSL. This may be quite common on the way pursuing an ideal QSL, and provides a brand-new platform to study how a QSL state survives impurities and coexists with other magnetically ordered states.

Muon spin rotation and relaxation study on topological noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$

Topological superconductivity is an exotic phenomenon due to the symmetry-protected topological surface state, in which a quantum system has an energy gap in the bulk but supports gapless excitations confined to its boundary. Symmetries including central and time-reversal (TRS), along with their relations with topology, are crucial for topological superconductivity. We report muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) experiments on a topological noncentrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$ to study its TRS and gap symmetry. Zero-field $μ$SR experiments indicate the absence of internal magnetic field in the superconducting state, consistent with previous $μ$SR results. Furthermore, transverse-field $μ$SR measurements reveals that the superconducting gap of PbTaSe$_2$ is an isotropic three-dimensional fully-gapped single-band. The fully-gapped results can help understand the pairing mechanism and further classify the topological superconductivity in this system.

Néel and stripe ordering from spin-orbital entanglement in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$

The rich phenomenology engendered by the coupling between the spin and orbital degrees of freedom has become appreciated as a key feature of many strongly-correlated electron systems. The resulting emergent physics is particularly prominent in a number of materials, from Fe-based unconventional superconductors to transition metal oxides, including manganites and vanadates. Here, we investigate the electronic ground states of $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$, a compound that is a rare embodiment of the spin-1 Kugel-Khomskii model on the square lattice -- a paradigmatic platform to capture the physics of coupled magnetic and orbital electronic orders. We have used resonant X-ray diffraction at the Cr-$K$ edge to reveal Néel magnetic order at the in-plane wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_N = (1/2, 1/2)$ below $T_N = 112$ K, as well as an additional electronic order at the 'stripe' wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_s = (1/2, 0)$ below T$_s$ $ \sim 50$ K. These findings are examined within the framework of the Kugel-Khomskii model by a combination of mean-field and Monte-Carlo approaches, which supports the stability of the spin Néel phase with subsequent lower-temperature stripe orbital ordering, revealing a candidate mechanism for the experimentally observed peak at $\mathbf{Q}_s$. On the basis of these findings, we propose that $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$ serves as a new platform in which to investigate multi-orbital physics and its role in the low-temperature phases of Mott insulators.

Unusual slow magnetic fluctuations and critical slowing down in Sr$_{2}$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{4}$

Hidden magnetic order of Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_4$, $x = 0.05$ and 0.1, has been studied using muon spin relaxation spectroscopy. In zero applied field and weak longitudinal fields ($μ_0H_L \lesssim 2$~mT), muon spin relaxation data can be well described by exponentially-damped static Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe functions, indicating that static and dynamic local fields coexist at each muon site. For $μ_0H_L \gtrsim 2$~mT, the static rate is completely decoupled, and the exponential decay is due to dynamic spin fluctuations. In both zero field and $μ_0H_L = 1$--2~mT, the temperature dependencies of the exponential muon spin relaxation rate exhibit maxima at 215~K for $x = 0.05$ and 175~K for $x = 0.1$, suggesting critical slowing down of electronic spin fluctuations. The field dependencies of the dynamic spin fluctuation rates can be well described by the Redfield relation. The correlation time of this electronic spin fluctuation is in the range of~2--5~ns for Sr$_2$Ir$_{0.9}$Rh$_{0.1}$O$_4$, and shorter than 2~ns for Sr$_2$Ir$_{0.95}$Rh$_{0.05}$O$_4$. The rms fluctuating field is on the order of 1 mT, which is consistent with the polarized neutron diffraction cross-section.

Search for Light Weakly-Interacting-Massive-Particle Dark Matter by Annual Modulation Analysis with a Point-Contact Germanium Detector at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We present results on light weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) searches with annual modulation (AM) analysis on data from a 1-kg mass $p$-type point-contact germanium detector of the CDEX-1B experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Datasets with a total live time of 3.2 yr within a 4.2 yr span are analyzed with analysis threshold of 250 eVee. Limits on WIMP-nucleus ($χ$-$N$) spin-independent cross sections as function of WIMP mass ($m_χ$) at 90\% confidence level (C.L.) are derived using the dark matter halo model. Within the context of the standard halo model, the 90\% C.L. allowed regions implied by the DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT AM-based analysis are excluded at $>$99.99\% and 98\% C.L., respectively. These results correspond to the best sensitivity at $m_χ$$<$6$~{\rm GeV}/c^2$ among WIMP AM measurements to date.

Anomalous Antiferromagnetism in Metallic RuO$_2$ Determined by Resonant X-ray Scattering

We studied the magnetic ordering of thin films and bulk crystals of rutile RuO$_2$ using resonant X-ray scattering across the Ru L$_2$ absorption edge. Combining polarization analysis and azimuthal-angle dependence of the magnetic Bragg signal, we have established the presence of G-type antiferromagnetism in RuO$_2$ with T$_N$ $>$ 300 K. In addition to revealing a spin-ordered ground state in the simplest ruthenium oxide compound, the persistence of magnetic order even in nanometer-thick films lays the ground for potential applications of RuO$_2$ in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Performances of a prototype point-contact germanium detector immersed in liquid nitrogen for light dark matter search

The CDEX-10 experiment searches for light weakly-interacting massive particles, a form of dark matter, at the China JinPing underground laboratory, where approximately 10 kg of germanium detectors are arranged in an array and immersed in liquid nitrogen. Herein, we report on the experimental apparatus, detector characterization, and spectrum analysis of one prototype detector. Owing to the higher rise-time resolution of the CDEX-10 prototype detector as compared with CDEX-1B, we identified the origin of an observed category of extremely fast events. For data analysis of the CDEX-10 prototype, we introduced and applied an improved bulk/surface event discrimination method. The results of the new method were compared to those of the CDEX-1B spectrum. Both sets of results showed good consistency in the 0--12 keVee energy range, except for the 8.0 keV K-shell X-ray peak from the external copper.

Limits on light WIMPs with a 1 kg-scale germanium detector at 160 eVee physics threshold at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report results of a search for light weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter from the CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). Constraints on WIMP-nucleon spin-independent (SI) and spin-dependent (SD) couplings are derived with a physics threshold of 160 eVee, from an exposure of 737.1 kg-days. The SI and SD limits extend the lower reach of light WIMPs to 2 GeV and improve over our earlier bounds at WIMP mass less than 6 GeV.

Limits on Light Weakly Interacting Massive Particles from the First 102.8 kg ${\times}$ day Data of the CDEX-10 Experiment

We report the first results of a light weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search from the CDEX-10 experiment with a 10 kg germanium detector array immersed in liquid nitrogen at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a physics data size of 102.8 kg day. At an analysis threshold of 160 eVee, improved limits of 8 $\times 10^{-42}$ and 3 $\times 10^{-36}$ cm$^{2}$ at a 90\% confidence level on spin-independent and spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections, respectively, at a WIMP mass ($m_χ$) of 5 GeV/${c}^2$ are achieved. The lower reach of $m_χ$ is extended to 2 GeV/${c}^2$.

On Nematicity and Charge Order in Superoxygenated La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4+y}$

A nematic order in stripe-ordered cuprates was recently identified with (001) reflection at resonant energies associated with the in-plane states. However, whether this resonant reflection is ubiquitous among all 214 cuprates is still unknown. Here we report a Resonant soft X-ray Scattering (RXS) measurement on two La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4+y}$ crystals. Charge order was found in La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$ with a total hole concentration near 0.125/Cu but no measurable (001) peak at any resonance, while in a La$_{1.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$CuO$_{4+y}$ sample near 0.16/Cu a (001) peak resonant was identified to be consistent with the presence of LTT tilting. The lack of such a (001) peak in a compound with stripe-like charge order raises questions about nematicity and the origin of the scattering feature.

Thermal modulation for suppression of parametric instability in advanced gravitational wave detectors

Three-mode parametric instability is a threat to attaining design power levels in Advanced gravitational wave detectors. The first observation of three-mode parametric instability in a long optical cavity revealed that instabilities could be suppressed by time variation of the mirror radius of curvature. In this paper, we present three dimensional finite element analysis of this thermo-acousto-optics system to determine whether thermal modulation could provide sufficient instability's suppression without degrading time averaged optical performance. It is shown that deformations due to the time averaged heating profile on the mirror surface can be compensated by rear surface heating of the test mass. Results show that a $CO_2$ laser heating beam with a modulation amplitude of $1$ Watt at 0.01 Hz is sufficient to stabilize acoustic mode with parametric gain up to 3. The parametric gain suppression factor is linearly proportional to the peak modulation power.

Constraints on Axion couplings from the CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report the results of searches for solar axions and galactic dark matter axions or axion-like particles with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, using 335.6 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector. The data are compatible with the background model and no excess signals are observed. Limits of solar axions on the model independent coupling $g_{Ae}<2.5\times10^{-11}$ from Compton, bremsstrahlung, atomic-recombination and deexcitation channel and $g^{\text{eff}}_{AN}\times g_{Ae}<6.1\times10^{-17}$ from $^{57}$Fe M1 transition at 90 % confidence level are derived. Within the framework of the DFSZ and KSVZ models, our results exclude the axion mass heavier than 0.9 eV/c$^{2}$ and 173 eV/c$^{2}$, respectively. The derived constraints for dark matter axions below 1 keV improves over the previous results.

Distinct Magnetic Phases in Structurally Uniform SrCoO$_{3-y}$

Two magnetic phase transitions have been noted for SrCoO$_{3-y}$ for near-stoichiometric oxygen concentrations (small y). Using muon spin rotation and neutron scattering experiments, we have established that the two transitions represent separate, spatially distinct magnetic phases that coexist in a two-phase equilibrium mixture. The two phases most likely represent areas of the sample with different effective valence charge density. Further, the phases exist over regions with a length scale intermediate between nanoscale charge inhomogeneity and systems such as manganites or super-oxygenated cuprates with large length scale phase separation.

Perovskite BaCrO_{3}: completing a materials system with an anomalous Mott transition

We have synthesized and characterized laser-deposited film samples of perovskite BaCrO_{3}, a missing member of the perovskite-chromate family. The BaCrO_{3} films have a substantially larger lattice constant than other chromates, are insulating, and exhibit weak ferromagnetism likely associated with canted antiferromagnetism. Comparison with the other sister compounds CaCrO_{3} and SrCrO_{3} suggest an anomalous Mott transition where magnetism is independent of whether the compound is metallic or insulating

A Search of Low-Mass WIMPs with p-type Point Contact Germanium Detector in the CDEX-1 Experiment

The CDEX-1 experiment conducted a search of low-mass (< 10 GeV/c2) Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory using a p-type point-contact germanium detector with a fiducial mass of 915 g at a physics analysis threshold of 475 eVee. We report the hardware set-up, detector characterization, data acquisition and analysis procedures of this experiment. No excess of unidentified events are observed after subtraction of known background. Using 335.6 kg-days of data, exclusion constraints on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent and spin-dependent couplings are derived.

Limits on light WIMPs from the CDEX-1 experiment with a p-type point-contact germanium detector at the China Jingping Underground Laboratory

We report results of a search for light Dark Matter WIMPs with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, based on 53.9 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector enclosed by a NaI(Tl) crystal scintillator as anti-Compton detector. The event rate and spectrum above the analysis threshold of 475 eVee are consistent with the understood background model. Part of the allowed regions for WIMP-nucleus coherent elastic scattering at WIMP mass of 6-20 GeV are probed and excluded. Independent of interaction channels, this result contradicts the interpretation that the anomalous excesses of the CoGeNT experiment are induced by Dark Matter, since identical detector techniques are used in both experiments.
