Effects of post-deposition annealing on the structure and magnetization of PLD grown Yttrium Iron Garnet films

We report on the recrystallization of 200 nm thick as-grown Yttrium Iron Garnet (Y_3.4 Fe_4.6 O_12) films on (111) face of Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) single crystals by post-deposition annealing. Epitaxial conversion of the as-grown microcrystalline YIG films was seen after annealing at 800oC for more than 30 minutes both in ambient oxygen as well as in air. The as-grown oxygen annealed samples at 800oC for 60 minutes crystallize epitaxially and show excellent figure-of-merit for saturation magnetization (MS = 3.3 μB/f.u., comparable to bulk value) and coercivity (HC ~ 1.1 Oe). The ambient air annealing at 800oC with a very slow rate of cooling (2oC/min) results in a double layer structure with a thicker unstrained epitaxial top layer having the MS and HC of 2.9 μB/f.u. and 0.12 Oe respectively. The symmetric and asymmetric Reciprocal space maps of both the samples reveal a locking of the in-plane lattice of the film to the in-plane lattice of substrate, indicating a pseudomorphic growth. The residual stress calculated by sin^2 ψ technique is compressive in nature. The lower layer in air annealed sample is highly strained, whereas, the top layer has negligible compressive stress.

Non-Fermi-liquid behavior at anti-ferromagnetic quantum critical point in heavy fermion system Ce(Cu$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$Ge$_2$

Polycrystalline samples of Ce(Cu$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$Ge$_2$ were investigated by means of electrical resistivity $ρ$($T$), magnetic susceptibility $χ$($T$), specific heat $C$$_p$($T$) and thermo electric power $S$($T$) measurements. The long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, which set in at $T$$_N$ = 4.1 K in CeCu$_2$Ge$_2$, is suppressed by non-iso-electronic cobalt (Co) doping at a critical value of the concentration $x$$_c$ = 0.6, accompanied by non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior inferred from the power law dependence of heat capacity and susceptibility i.e. $C$($T$)/$T$ and $χ$($T$) $\propto$ $T$$^{-1+λ}$ down to 0.4 K, along with a clear deviation from $T$$^2$ behavior of the electrical resistivity. However, we have not seen any superconducting phase in the quantum critical regime down to 0.4 K.

Band structure and Fermi surfaces of the reentrant ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe0.86Ir0.14)2As2

The electronic structure of the reentrant superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (T$_c$ = 22 K) with coexisting ferromagnetic order (T$_M$ = 18 K) is investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). We study the in-plane and out-of-plane band dispersions and Fermi surface (FS) of Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$. The near E$_F$ Fe 3d-derived band dispersions near the $Γ$ and X high-symmetry points show changes due to Ir substitution, but the FS topology is preserved. From momentum dependent measurements of the superconducting gap measured at T = 5 K, we estimate an essentially isotropic s-wave gap ($Δ\sim5.25\pm 0.25$ meV), indicative of strong-coupling superconductivity with 2$Δ$/k$_{B}$T$_{c}\simeq$ 5.8. The gap gets closed at temperatures T $\geq$ 10 K, and this is attributed to the resistive phase which sets in at T$_M$ = 18 K due to the Eu$^{2+}$-derived magnetic order. The modifications of the FS with Ir substitution clearly indicates an effective hole doping with respect to the parent compound.

Multigap Superconductivity in a charge density wave superconductor LaPt2Si2

The superconducting gap structure of a charge density wave (CDW) superconductor LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ ($T_c$ = 1.6~K) having a quasi two dimensional crystal structure has been investigated using muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements carried out in transverse field (TF), zero field (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) geometries. Rigorous analysis of TF-$μ$SR spectra in the superconducting state corroborates that the temperature dependence of the effective penetration depth, $λ_L$, derived from muon spin depolarization, fits to an isotropic $s+s-$wave model suggesting that the Fermi surface contains two gaps of different magnitude rather than an isotropic gap expected for a conventional $s-$wave superconductor. On the other hand, ZF $μ$SR data do not show any significant change in muon spin relaxation rate above and below the superconducting transition indicating the fact that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the system.

Kondo effect with tunable spin orbit interaction in LaTiO3/CeTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure

We have fabricated epitaxial films of CeTiO3 (CTO) on (001)oriented SrTiO3(STO) substrates, which exhibit highly insulating and diamagnetic properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was to establish the 3+ valence state of the Ve and Ti ions. Furthermore, we also fabricated delta (CTO) doped LatiO3 (LTO)-STO thin films which exhibit variety of interesting properties including Kondo effect and spin orbit interaction (SOI) at low temperatures. SOI shows a non-monotonic behaviour as the thickness of the CTO layer is increased and is reflected in the value of the characteristic SOI field (B_SO) obtained from weak antilocalization fitting. The maximum value of B_SO is 1.00 T for delta layer thickness of 6 u.c. This non-monotonic behaviour of SOI is attributed to the strong screening of the confining potential at the interface. The thicker CTO film in addition to the increased dielectric constant of the STO substrate at low temperature leads to strong screening as a result of which the electrons confined at the interface are spread deeper into the STO bulk where it starts to populate the Ti d_xz_yz subbands; consequently the Fermi level crosses over from the d_xy to the d_xz_yz subbands. At the crossover region of d_xy - d_xz_yz where there is orbital mixing, SOI goes through a maximum.

Valence fuctuation and magnetic ordering in EuNi2(P1-xGex)2 single crystals

Unusual phases and phase transitions are seen at the magnetic-nonmagnetic boundary in Ce, Eu and Yb-based compounds. EuNi$_2$P$_{2}$ is a very unusual valence fluctuating Eu system, because at low temperatures the Eu valence stays close to 2.5 instead of approaching an integer value. Eu valence and thus the magnetic property in this system can be tuned by Ge substitution in P site as EuNi$_2$Ge$_{2}$ is known to exhibit antiferromagnetc (AFM) ordering of divalent Eu moments with $T_N$ = 30 K. We have grown EuNi$_2$(P$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$)$_2$ (0.0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.5) single crystals and studied their magnetic, thermodynamic and transport properties. Increasing Ge doping to $x >$ 0.4 results in a well-defined AFM ordered state with $T_N$ = 12 K for $x$ = 0.5. Moreover, the reduced value of magnetic entropy for $x$ = 0.5 at $T_N$ suggests the presence of valance fluctuation/ Kondo effect in this compound. Interestingly, the specific heat exhibits an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient upon Ge doping. Subsequently, electronic structure calculations lead to a non-integral valence in EuNi$_2$P$_{2}$ but a stable divalent Eu state in EuNi$_2$Ge$_{2}$ which is in good agreement with experimental results.

Signature of enhanced spin-orbit interaction in the magnetoresistance of LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces on $δ$-doping

We present a study of modulation of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) at the interface of LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ by $δ$-doping with an iso-structural ferromagnetic perovskite LaCoO$_3$. The sheet carrier density at the interface decreases exponentially with $δ$-doping thickness. We have explored that the spin-orbit scattering time ($τ_{so}$) can be decreased by nearly 3 orders of magnitude, whereas the inelastic scattering time ($τ_{i}$) remains almost constant with $δ$-doping thickness. We have also observed that the $τ_{i}$ varies almost inversely proportional to temperature and $τ_{so}$ remains insensitive to temperature, which suggest that the spin relaxation in these interfaces follows D'yakonov-Perel mechanism. The observed in-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance is attributed to the mixing of the spin up and spin down states of d-band at Fermi level due to SOI.

Dynamics of photo-generated non-equilibrium electronic states in Ar$^+$ ion irradiated SrTiO$_3$

A metallic surface is realized on stoichiometric and insulating (100) SrTiO$_3$ by Ar$^+$ - ion irradiation. The sheet carrier density and Hall mobility of the layer are $\sim$$4.0$ $\times$ $10^{14}$ $/cm^2$ and $\sim$$2$ $\times$ $10^3$ $cm^2/Vs$ respectively at 15 K for the irradiation dose of $\sim$4.2 $\times 10^{18}$ $ions/cm^2$. These samples display ultraviolet light sensitive photoconductivity (PC) which is enhanced abruptly below the temperature ($\approx$100 K) where SrTiO$_3$ crystal undergoes an antiferrodistortive cubic-to-tetragonal ($O_h^1$ $\rightarrow$ $D_{4h}^{18}$) structural phase transition. This behaviour of PC maps well with the temperature dependence of dielectric function and electric field induced conductivity. The longevity of the PC-state also shows a distinct change below $\approx$100 K. At $T > 100$ K its decay is thermally activated with energy barrier of $\approx$36 meV, whereas at $T < 100$ K it becomes independent of temperature. We have examined the effect of electrostatic gating on the lifetime of the PC state. One non-trivial result is the ambient temperature quenching of the photo-conducting state by the negative gate field. This observation opens avenues for designing a solid state photo-electric switch. The origin and lifetime of the PC-state are understood in the light of field effect induced band bending, defect dynamics and thermal relaxation processes.

$μ$SR and Neutron Diffraction Investigations on Reentrant Ferromagnetic Superconductor Eu(Fe{0.86}Ir{0.14})2As2

Results of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron powder diffraction measurements on a reentrant superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_2$As$_2$ are presented. Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_2$As$_2$ exhibits superconductivity at $T_{\rm c\,on} \approx 22.5$~K competing with long range ordered Eu$^{+2}$ moments below $\approx 18$ K. A reentrant behavior (manifested by nonzero resistivity in the temperature range 10--17.5 K) results from an exquisite competition between the superconductivity and magnetic order. The zero field $μ$SR data confirm the long range magnetic ordering below $T_{\rm Eu} = 18.7(2)$ K. The transition temperature is found to increase with increasing magnetic field in longitudinal field $μ$SR which along with the neutron diffraction results, suggests the transition to be ferromagnetic. The neutron diffraction data reveal a clear presence of magnetic Bragg peaks below $T_{\rm Eu}$ which could be indexed with propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0), confirming a long range magnetic ordering in agreement with $μ$SR data. Our analysis of the magnetic structure reveals an ordered magnetic moment of $6.29(5)\,μ_{\rm B}$ (at 1.8 K) on the Eu atoms and they form a ferromagnetic structure with moments aligned along the $c$-axis. No change in the magnetic structure is observed in the reentrant or superconducting phases and the magnetic structure remains same for 1.8 K $\leq T \leq T_{\rm Eu}$. No clear evidence of structural transition or Fe moment ordering was found.

Magnetothermopower of $δ$-doped LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces in the Kondo regime

Measurements of magneto-thermopower (S(H, T)) of interfacial delta doped LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LTO/STO) heterostructure by an iso-structural antiferromagnetic perovskite LaCrO$_3$ are reported. The thermoelectric power of the pure LTO/STO interface at 300 K is $\approx$ 118 $μ$V/K, but increases dramatically on $δ$-doping. The observed linear temperature dependence of S(T) over the temperature range 100 K to 300 K is in agreement with the theory of diffusion thermopower of a two-dimensional electron gas. The S(T) displays a distinct enhancement in the temperature range (T $<$ 100 K) where the sheet resistance shows a Kondo-type minimum. We attributed this maximum in S(T) to Kondo scattering of conduction electron by localized impurity spins at the interface. The suppression of S by a magnetic field, and the isotropic nature of the suppression in out-of-plane and in-plane field geometries further strengthen the Kondo model based interpretation of S(H, T).

Enhanced spin-orbit interaction and Kondo scattering in $δ$-doped LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces

We present a study of delta ($δ$) doping at LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LTO/STO) interface with iso-structural antiferromagnetic perovskite LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) that dramatically alters the properties of the two dimensional electron gas (2-DEG) at the interface. The effects include a reduction in sheet-carrier density, prominence of the low temperature resistivity minimum, enhancement of weak antilocalization below 10 K and observation of a strong anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR). The positive and negative MR for out-of-plane and in-plane field respectively and the field and temperature dependencies of MR suggest Kondo scattering by localized Ti$^{3+}$ moments renormalized by spin-orbit interaction at T $<$ 10 K, with the increased $δ$-layer thickness. Electron energy loss spectroscopy and density functional calculations provide convincing evidence for blocking of electron transfer from LTO to STO by the $δ$-layer.

Itinerant and local-moment magnetism in EuCr2As2 single crystals

We report on the crystal structure, physical properties, and electronic structure calculations for the ternary pnictide compound EuCr2As2. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed that EuCr2As2 crystalizes in the ThCr2Si2-type tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm). The Eu ions are in a stable divalent state in this compound. Eu moments in EuCr2As2 order magnetically below Tm = 21 K. A sharp increase in the magnetic susceptibility below Tm and the positive value of the paramagnetic Curie temperature obtained from the Curie-Weiss fit suggest dominant ferromagnetic interactions. The heat capacity exhibits a sharp λ-shape anomaly at Tm, confirming the bulk nature of the magnetic transition. The extracted magnetic entropy at the magnetic transition temperature is consistent with the theoretical value Rln(2S+1) for S = 7/2 of the Eu2+ ion. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity \r{ho}(T) shows metallic behavior along with an anomaly at 21 K. In addition, we observe a reasonably large negative magneto-resistance (~ -24%) at lower temperature. Electronic structure calculations for EuCr2As2 reveal a moderately high density of states of Cr-3d orbitals at the Fermi energy, indicating that the nonmagnetic state of Cr is unstable against magnetic order. Our density functional calculations for EuCr2As2 predict a G-type AFM order in the Cr sublattice. The electronic structure calculations suggest a weak interlayer coupling of the Eu moments.

Heavy fermion and Kondo lattice behavior in the itinerant ferromagnet CeCrGe3

Physical properties of polycrystalline CeCrGe$_{3}$ and LaCrGe$_{3}$ have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, isothermal magnetization M(H), electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, specific heat C($T$) and thermoelectric power S($T$) measurements. These compounds are found to crystallize in the hexagonal perovskite structure (space group \textit{P6$_{3}$/mmc}), as previously reported. The $ρ(T)$, $χ(T)$ and C($T$) data confirm the bulk ferromagnetic ordering of itinerant Cr moments in LaCrGe$_{3}$ and CeCrGe$_{3}$ with $T_{C}$ = 90 K and 70 K respectively. In addition a weak anomaly is also observed near 3 K in the C($T$) data of CeCrGe$_{3}$. The T dependences of $ρ$ and finite values of Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ obtained from the specific heat measurements confirm that both the compounds are of metallic character. Further, the $T$ dependence of $ρ$ of CeCrGe$_{3}$ reflects a Kondo lattice behavior. An enhanced $γ$ of 130 mJ/mol\,K$^{2}$ together with the Kondo lattice behavior inferred from the $ρ(T)$ establish CeCrGe$_{3}$ as a moderate heavy fermion compound with a quasi-particle mass renormalization factor of $\sim$ 45.

Two-dimensional electron-gas-like charge transport at magnetic Heusler alloy-SrTiO$_3$ interface

We report remarkably low residual resistivity, giant residual resistivity ratio, free-electron-like Hall resistivity and high mobility ($\approx$ 10$^4$ cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$) charge transport in epitaxial films of Co$_2$MnSi and Co$_2$FeSi grown on (001) SrTiO$_3$. This unusual behavior is not observed in films deposited on other cubic oxide substrates of comparable lattice parameters. The scaling of the resistivity with thickness of the films allow extraction of interface conductance, which can be attributed to a layer of oxygen vacancies confined within 1.9 nm of the interface as revealed by atomically resolved electron microscopy and spectroscopy. The high mobility transport observed here at the interface of a fully spin polarized metal is potentially important for spintronics applications.

Magnetoelastic coupling induced magnetic anisotropy in Co$_2$(Fe/Mn)Si thin films

The influence of epitaxial strain on uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of Co$_{2}$FeSi (CFS) and Co$_{2}$MnSi (CMS) Heusler alloy thin films grown on (001) SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and MgO is reported. The in-plane biaxial strain is susceptible to tune by varying the thickness of the films on STO, while on MgO the films show in-plane easy axis for magnetization (\overrightarrow{M}) irrespective of their thickness. A variational analysis of magnetic free energy functional within the Stoner-Wohlfarth coherent rotation model with out-of-plane uniaxial anisotropy for the films on STO showed the presence of magnetoelastic anisotropy with magnetostriction constant $\approx$ (12.22$\pm$0.07)$\times 10^{-6}$ and (2.02$\pm$0.06)$\times 10^{-6}$, in addition to intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy $\approx$ -1.72$\times 10^{6}$ erg/cm$^{3}$ and -3.94$\times 10^{6}$ erg/cm$^{3}$ for CFS and CMS, respectively. The single-domain phase diagram reveals a gradual transition from in-plane to out-of-plane orientation of magnetization with the decreasing film thickness. A maximum canting angle of 41.5$^{\circ}$ with respect to film plane is predicted for the magnetization of the thinnest (12 nm) CFS film on STO. The distinct behaviour of \overrightarrow{M} in the films with lower thickness on STO is attributed to strain-induced tetragonal distortion.

75As NMR local probe study of magnetism in (Eu1-xKx)Fe2As2

75As NMR measurements were performed as a function of temperature and doping in (Eu1-xKx)Fe2As2 (x=0,0.38,0.5,0.7) samples. The large Eu2+ moments and their fluctuations are found to dominate the 75As NMR properties. The 75As nuclei close to the Eu2+ moments likely have a very short spin-spin relaxation time (T2) and are wiped out of our measurement window. The 75As nuclei relatively far from Eu2+ moments are probed in this study. Increasing the Eu content progressively decreases the signal intensity with no signal found for the full-Eu sample (x=0). The large 75As NMR linewidth arises from an inhomogeneous magnetic environment around them. The spin lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) for x=0.5 and 0.7 samples is nearly independent of temperature above 100K and results from a coupling to paramagnetic fluctuations of the Eu2+ moments. The behavior of 1/T1 at lower temperatures has contributions from the antiferromagnetic fluctuations of the Eu2+ moments as also the fluctuations intrinsic to the FeAs planes and from superconductivity.

δ-doped LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interface: Electrical transport and characterization of the interface potential

Here we investigate LaAlO_3-SrTiO_3 heterostructure withδ-doping of the interface by LaMnO_3 at less than one monolayer. This doping strongly inhibits the formation of mobile electron layer at the interface. This results in giant increase of the resistance and the thermopower of the heterostructure. Several aspects of this phenomena are investigated. A model to calculate the carrier concentration is presented and effect of doping and detailed temperature dependence is analyzed in terms of model parameters and the weak-scattering theory. The large enhancement of thermopower is attributed to the increased spin and orbital entropy originating from the LaMnO_3 mono-layer.

Reentrant Superconductivity in Eu(Fe1-xIrx)2As2

The interplay between superconductivity and Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic ordering in Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is studied by means of electrical transport and magnetic measurements. For the critically doped sample Eu(Fe$_{0.86}$Ir$_{0.14}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, we witnessed two distinct transitions : a superconducting transition below 22.6 K which is followed by a resistivity reentrance caused by the ordering of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments. Further, the low field magnetization measurements show a prominent diamagnetic signal due to superconductivity which is remarkable in presence of a large moment magnetically ordered system. The electronic structure for a 12.5% Ir doped EuFe$_{1.75}$Ir$_{0.25}$As$_{2}$ is investigated along with the parent compound EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. As compared to EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, the doped compound has effectively lower value of density of states throughout the energy scale with more extended bandwidth and stronger hybridization involving Ir. Shifting of Fermi energy and change in band filling in EuFe$_{1.75}$Ir$_{0.25}$As$_{2}$ with respect to the pure compound indicate electron doping in the system.
