When physics helps mathematics: calculation of the sophisticated multiple integral

There exists a remarkable connection between the quantum mechanical Landau-Zener problem and purely classical-mechanical problem of a ball rolling on a Cornu spiral. This correspondence allows us to calculate a complicated multiple integral, a kind of multi-dimensional generalization of Fresnel integrals. A direct method of calculation is also considered but found to be successful only in some low-dimensional cases. As a byproduct of this direct method, an interesting new integral representation for $ζ(2)$ is obtained.

On the Finslerian extension of the Schwarzschild metric

We provide a Finslerian extension of the Schwarzschild metric based on heuristic arguments. The proposed metric asymptotically approaches not the Minkowski space-time but the Bogoslovsky locally anisotropic space-time which arises naturally as a deformation of very special relativity.

Moving Mini-Max - a new indicator for technical analysis

We propose a new indicator for technical analysis. The indicator emphasizes maximums and minimums in price series with inherent smoothing and has a potential to be useful in both mechanical trading rules and chart pattern analysis.

Test problems in mechanics and special relativity

These test problems were used by the author as weekly control works for the first year physics students at Novosibirsk State University in 2005. Solutions of the problems are also given. The problems were taken from or inspired by the sources listed at the end.

Schrodinger's cat versus Darwin

Sun Wu-k'ung, an immortal Monkey-King of Chaos learns modern physics from the Patriarch Bodhi and questions the Darwinian evolution. He finds that the modern physics indicates towards the intelligent design as a vastly more probably origin of humans than the random evolution by mutations and natural selection.

Citation entropy and research impact estimation

A new indicator, a real valued $s$-index, is suggested to characterize a quality and impact of the scientific research output. It is expected to be at least as useful as the notorious $h$-index, at the same time avoiding some its obvious drawbacks. However, surprisingly, the $h$-index is found to be quite a good indicator for majority of real-life citation data with their alleged Zipfian behaviour for which these drawbacks do not show up. The style of the paper was chosen deliberately somewhat frivolous to indicate that any attempt to characterize the scientific output of a researcher by just one number always has an element of a grotesque game in it and should not be taken too seriously. I hope this frivolous style will be perceived as a funny decoration only.

Problems in mechanics of particles and bodies

The textbook contains the problems in mechanics and special relativity for physics departments of universities. Many original problems were proposed by active scientists from the institutes of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Science, while teaching at the Novosibirsk State University. The problems have been used in seminars, students' homework and in the written examinations at Novosibirsk State University. They are arranged according to the program of the introductory mechanics course, adopted at Novosibirsk State University. This part contains only problems. Answers and solutions of some problems can be also provided in a separate submission in future, if there would be enough interest in them. Previous versions of the textbook were published several times in the past. This submission is based only on the author's original materials and does not use any copyrighted files from the publishers.

LHC card games: bringing about retrocausality?

The model of Nielsen and Ninomiya claims that "the SSC (Superconducting Supercollider) were stopped by the US Congress due to the backward causation from the big amounts of Higgs particles, which it would have produced, if it had been allowed to run". They also proposed to play a card game and if the "close LHC" card is drawn (with probability $\sim 10^{-6}$), really close LHC on the eve of Higgs particle discovery to avoid more severe bad luck. Crazy? Probably. But paraphrasing Salvador Dali, if you believe that you and me are smarter in physics than Nielsen and Ninomiya, don't read this article, just go right on in your blissful idiocy. Therefore, I will try to make sense of backward causation. It turns out that not only the backward causation makes perfect sense in some models of possible reality, but that Nielsen and Ninomiya really have a chance to close LHC by a card game. The only thing they need is to be smart enough to manage to develop their theory up to the level of brilliance beginning from which it becomes a part of the fabric of reality. We hope, however, that they will use their outstanding abilities to bring about some more interesting future.

Sliding rope paradox

A simple mechanical problem is considered which we believe will help students to familiarize some concepts of mechanics of variable mass systems. Meanwhile they can even learn some thrilling physics of bungee jumping.

Search for Lepton Flavor Violation Process e^+e^- \to eμin the Energy Region \sqrt{s}=984 -- 1060 MeV and ϕ\to eμDecay

The search for lepton-flavor-violation process e^+e^-\to eμin the energy region \sqrt{s}=984 - 1060 MeV with SND detector at VEPP-2M e^+e^- collider is reported. The model independent 90% CL upper limits on the e^+e^-\to eμcross section, σ_{eμ} < 11 pb, as well as on the corresponding ϕ\to eμbranching fraction, B(ϕ\to eμ) < 2 \times 10^{-6}, for the final particles polar angles 55^\circ<θ<125^\circ, were obtained.

The dog-and-rabbit chase problem as an exercise in introductory kinematics

The purpose of this article is to present a simple solution of the classic dog-and-rabbit chase problem which emphasizes the use of concepts of elementary kinematics and, therefore, can be used in introductory mechanics course. The article is based on the teaching experience of introductory mechanics course at Novosibirsk State University for first year physics students which are just beginning to use advanced mathematical methods in physics problems. We hope it will be also useful for students and teachers at other universities too.

Thomas rotation and Mocanu paradox -- not at all paradoxical

Non-commutativity of the Einstein velocity addition, in case of non-collinear velocities, seemingly gives rise to a conflict with reciprocity principle. However, Thomas rotation comes at a rescue and the paradox is avoided. It is shown that such a resolution of the so called Mocanu paradox is completely natural from the point of view of basic premises of special relativity.

Quantum gravity, minimum length and Keplerian orbits

We conjecture that the modified commutation relations suggested in the context of quantum gravity (QG) persist also in the classical limit, if the momentum of the classical object is not too large, and calculate the corresponding perihelion precession rate for Keplerian orbits.

Elementary derivation of the Lense-Thirring precession

An elementary pedagogical derivation of the Lense-Thirring precession is given based on the use of Hamilton vector. The Hamilton vector is an extra constant of motion of the Kepler/Coulomb problem related simply to the more popular Runge-Lenz vector. When a velocity-dependent Lorentz-like gravitomagnetic force is present, the Hamilton vector, as well as the canonical orbital momentum are no longer conserved and begin to precess. It is easy to calculate their precession rates, which are related to the Lense-Thirring precession of the orbit.
