Enhancement in Thermally Generated Spin Voltage at Pd/NiFe$_2$O$_4$ Interfaces by the Growth on Lattice-Matched Substrates

Efficient spin injection from epitaxial ferrimagnetic NiFe$_2$O$_4$ thin films into a Pd layer is demonstrated via spin Seebeck effect measurements in the longitudinal geometry. The NiFe$_2$O$_4$ films (60 nm to 1 $μ$m) are grown by pulsed laser deposition on isostructural spinel MgAl$_2$O$_4$, MgGa$_2$O$_4$, and CoGa$_2$O$_4$ substrates with lattice mismatch varying between 3.2% and 0.2%. For the thinner films ($\leq$ 330 nm), an increase in the spin Seebeck voltage is observed with decreasing lattice mismatch, which correlates well with a decrease in the Gilbert damping parameter as determined from ferromagnetic resonance measurements. High resolution transmission electron microscopy studies indicate substantial decrease of antiphase boundary and interface defects that cause strain-relaxation, i.e., misfit dislocations, in the films with decreasing lattice mismatch. This highlights the importance of reducing structural defects in spinel ferrites for efficient spin injection. It is further shown that angle-dependent spin Seebeck effect measurements provide a qualitative method to probe for in-plane magnetic anisotropies present in the films.

Indirect Search for Dark Matter from the Galactic Center and Halo with the Super-Kamiokande Detector

We present a search for an excess of neutrino interactions due to dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) annihilating in the galactic center or halo based on the data set of Super-Kamiokande-I, -II, -III and -IV taken from 1996 to 2016. We model the neutrino flux, energy, and flavor distributions assuming WIMP self-annihilation is dominant to $ν\overlineν$, $μ^+μ^-$, $b\overline{b}$, or $W^+W^-$. The excess is in comparison to atmospheric neutrino interactions which are modeled in detail and fit to data. Limits on the self-annihilation cross section $\langle σ_{A} V \rangle$ are derived for WIMP masses in the range 1 GeV to 10 TeV, reaching as low as $9.6 \times10^{-23}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 5 GeV WIMPs in $b\bar b$ mode and $1.2 \times10^{-24}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 1 GeV WIMPs in $ν\bar ν$ mode. The obtained sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande detector to WIMP masses below several tens of GeV is the best among similar indirect searches to date.

Measurement of the Spectral Shape of the beta-decay of 137Xe to the Ground State of 137Cs in EXO-200 and Comparison with Theory

We report on a comparison between the theoretically predicted and experimentally measured spectra of the first-forbidden non-unique $β$-decay transition $^{137}\textrm{Xe}(7/2^-)\to\,^{137}\textrm{Cs}(7/2^+)$. The experimental data were acquired by the EXO-200 experiment during a deployment of an AmBe neutron source. The ultra-low background environment of EXO-200, together with dedicated source deployment and analysis procedures, allowed for collection of a pure sample of the decays, with an estimated signal-to-background ratio of more than 99-to-1 in the energy range from 1075 to 4175 keV. In addition to providing a rare and accurate measurement of the first-forbidden non-unique $β$-decay shape, this work constitutes a novel test of the calculated electron spectral shapes in the context of the reactor antineutrino anomaly and spectral bump.

High-energy characteristics of the accretion-powered millisecond pulsar IGR J17591-2342 during its 2018 outburst

IGR J17591-2342 is a recently INTEGRAL discovered accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar that went into outburst around July 21, 2018. To better understand the physics acting in these systems during the outburst episode we performed detailed temporal-, timing- and spectral analyses across the 0.3-300 keV band using data from NICER, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and INTEGRAL. The hard X-ray 20-60 keV outburst profile is composed of four flares. During the maximum of the last flare we discovered a type-I thermonuclear burst in INTEGRAL JEM-X data. We derived a distance of 7.6+/-0.7 kpc, adopting Eddington luminosity limited photospheric radius expansion burst emission and assuming anisotropic emission. In the timing analysis using all NICER 1-10 keV monitoring data we observed a rather complex behaviour starting with a spin-up period, followed by a frequency drop, a episode of constant frequency and concluding with irregular behaviour till the end of the outburst. The 1-50 keV phase distributions of the pulsed emission, detected up to $\sim$ 120 keV using INTEGRAL ISGRI data, was decomposed in three Fourier harmonics showing that the pulsed fraction of the fundamental increases from ~10% to ~17% going from ~1.5 to ~4 keV, while the harder photons arrive earlier than the soft photons for energies <10 keV. The total emission spectrum of IGR J17591-2342 across the 0.3-150 keV band could adequately be fitted in terms of an absorbed compPS model yielding as best fit parameters a column density of N_H=(2.09+/-0.05) x 10^{22} /cm2, a blackbody seed photon temperature kT_bb,seed of 0.64+/- 0.02 keV, electron temperature kT_e=38.8+/-1.2 keV and Thomson optical depth Tau_T=1.59+/-0.04. The fit normalisation results in an emission area radius of 11.3+/-0.5 km adopting a distance of 7.6 kpc. Finally, the results are discussed within the framework of accretion physics- and X-ray thermonuclear burst theory.

ATiO$_{3}$/TiO (A=Pb, Sn) superlattice: bridging ferroelectricity and conductivity

We propose to insert TiO layers to perovskite ATiO$_{3}$ to form a superlattice and use first-principles calculations to investigate its basic properties. Our computational analysis shows that the structure, which consists of repeated ATiO_{3} and TiO layers, has strong anisotropic conductivity. The structure immediately suggests a possible control of its conductivity by ion displacements related to its intrinsic ferroelectricity. In addition, we have obtained the structural information of its low-energy phases with the aid of phonon calculation and examined their evolution with epitaxial strain. Since the number of possible combinations is huge, we have therefore suggested an approach to mix perovskites and simpler metal-oxides to build materials with novel properties.

Reflectivity and PDE of VUV4 Hamamatsu SiPMs in Liquid Xenon

Understanding reflective properties of materials and photodetection efficiency (PDE) of photodetectors is important for optimizing energy resolution and sensitivity of the next generation neutrinoless double beta decay, direct detection dark matter, and neutrino oscillation experiments that will use noble liquid gases, such as nEXO, DARWIN, DarkSide-20k, and DUNE. Little information is currently available about reflectivity and PDE in liquid noble gases, because such measurements are difficult to conduct in a cryogenic environment and at short enough wavelengths. Here we report a measurement of specular reflectivity and relative PDE of Hamamatsu VUV4 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) with 50 micrometer micro-cells conducted with xenon scintillation light (~175 nm) in liquid xenon. The specular reflectivity at 15 deg. incidence of three samples of VUV4 SiPMs is found to be 30.4+/-1.4%, 28.6+/-1.3%, and 28.0+/-1.3%, respectively. The PDE at normal incidence differs by +/-8% (standard deviation) among the three devices. The angular dependence of the reflectivity and PDE was also measured for one of the SiPMs. Both the reflectivity and PDE decrease as the angle of incidence increases. This is the first measurement of an angular dependence of PDE and reflectivity of a SiPM in liquid xenon.

No existence of the geometric potential for a Dirac fermion on two-dimensional curved surfaces of revolution

For a free particle that non-relativistically moves on a curved surface, there are curvature-induced quantum potentials that significantly influence the surface quantum states, but the experimental results in topological insulators, whenever curved or not, indicate no evidence of such a potential, implying that there does not exist such a quantum potential for the relativistic particles, constrained on the surface or not. Within the framework of Dirac quantization scheme, we demonstrate a general result that for a Dirac fermion on a two-dimensional curved surface of revolution, no curvature-induced quantum potential is permissible.

Reflectance of Silicon Photomultipliers at Vacuum Ultraviolet Wavelengths

Characterization of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) reflectance of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) is important for large-scale SiPM-based photodetector systems. We report the angular dependence of the specular reflectance in a vacuum of SiPMs manufactured by Fondazionc Bruno Kessler (FBK) and Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) over wavelengths ranging from 120 nm to 280 nm. Refractive index and extinction coefficient of the thin silicon-dioxide film deposited on the surface of the FBK SiPMs are derived from reflectance data of a FBK silicon wafer with the same deposited oxide film as SiPMs. The diffuse reflectance of SiPMs is also measured at 193 nm. We use the VUV spectral dependence of the optical constants to predict the reflectance of the FBK silicon wafer and FBK SiPMs in liquid xenon.

Measurements of electron transport in liquid and gas Xenon using a laser-driven photocathode

Measurements of electron drift properties in liquid and gaseous xenon are reported. The electrons are generated by the photoelectric effect in a semi-transparent gold photocathode driven in transmission mode with a pulsed ultraviolet laser. The charges drift and diffuse in a small chamber at various electric fields and a fixed drift distance of 2.0 cm. At an electric field of 0.5 kV/cm, the measured drift velocities and corresponding temperature coefficients respectively are $1.97 \pm 0.04$ mm/$μ$s and $(-0.69\pm0.05)$\%/K for liquid xenon, and $1.42 \pm 0.03$ mm/$μ$s and $(+0.11\pm0.01)$\%/K for gaseous xenon at 1.5 bar. In addition, we measure longitudinal diffusion coefficients of $25.7 \pm 4.6$ cm$^2$/s and $149 \pm 23$ cm$^2$/s, for liquid and gas, respectively. The quantum efficiency of the gold photocathode is studied at the photon energy of 4.73 eV in liquid and gaseous xenon, and vacuum. These charge transport properties and the behavior of photocathodes in a xenon environment are important in designing and calibrating future large scale noble liquid detectors.

Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay with the Complete EXO-200 Dataset

A search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) in $^{136}$Xe is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset using a deep neural network to discriminate between $0νββ$ and background events. Relative to previous analyses, the signal detection efficiency has been raised from 80.8% to 96.4$\pm$3.0% and the energy resolution of the detector at the Q-value of $^{136}$Xe $0νββ$ has been improved from $σ/E=1.23\%$ to $1.15\pm0.02\%$ with the upgraded detector. Accounting for the new data, the median 90% confidence level $0νββ$ half-life sensitivity for this analysis is $5.0 \cdot 10^{25}$ yr with a total $^{136}$Xe exposure of 234.1 kg$\cdot$yr. No statistically significant evidence for $0νββ$ is observed, leading to a lower limit on the $0νββ$ half-life of $3.5\cdot10^{25}$ yr at the 90% confidence level.

Waveform Feature Implementation for FRIB LLRF Controllers

Waveform feature is one of the requirements for the FRIB LLRF controllers. It is desired that the LLRF con-trollers store the internal data (e.g. the amplitude and phase information of forward/reverse/cavity signals) for at least one second of sampled data at the RF feedback control loop rate (around 1.25 MHz). One use case is to freeze the data buffer when an interlock event happens and read out the fast data to diagnose the problem. An-other use case is to monitor a set of signals at a decimated rate (user settable) while the data buffer is still running, like using an oscilloscope. The detailed implementation will be discussed in the paper, including writing data into the DDR memory through the native interface, reading out the data through the bus interface, etc.

Simulation of charge readout with segmented tiles in nEXO

nEXO is a proposed experiment to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay ($0νββ$) of $^{136}$Xe in a tonne-scale liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The nEXO TPC will be equipped with charge collection tiles to form the anode. In this work, the charge reconstruction performance of this anode design is studied with a dedicated simulation package. A multi-variate method and a deep neural network are developed to distinguish simulated $0νββ$ signals from backgrounds arising from trace levels of natural radioactivity in the detector materials. These simulations indicate that the nEXO TPC with charge-collection tiles shows promising capability to discriminate the $0νββ$ signal from backgrounds. The estimated half-life sensitivity for $0νββ$ decay is improved by $\sim$20$~(32)\%$ with the multi-variate~(deep neural network) methods considered here, relative to the sensitivity estimated in the nEXO pre-conceptual design report.

Curvature-induced noncommutativity of two different components of momentum for a particle on a hypersurface

As a nonrelativistic particle constrained to remain on an $N-1$ ($N\geq 2$) dimensional hypersurface embedded in an $N$ dimensional Euclidean space, two different components $p_{i}$ and $p_{j}$ ($i,j=1,2,3,...N$) of the Cartesian momentum of the particle are not mutually commutative, and explicitly commutation relations $[p_{i},p_{j}]\left( \neq 0\right) $ depend on products of positions and momenta in uncontrollable ways. The \textit{% generalized} Dupin indicatrix of the hypersurface, a local analysis technique, is utilized to explore the dependence of the noncommutativity on the curvatures on a \textit{local point }of the hypersurface. The first finding is that the noncommutativity can be grouped into two categories; one is the product of a sectional curvature and the angular momentum, and another is the product of a principal curvature and the momentum. The second finding is that, for a small circle lying a \textit{tangential plane} covering the \textit{local point}, the noncommutativity leads to a rotation operator and the amount of the rotation is an angle anholonomy; and along each of the \textit{normal sectional curves} centering the \textit{given point} the noncommutativity leads to a translation plus an additional rotation and the amount of the rotation is one half of the tangential angle change of the arc.

Superconductivity in a unique type of copper oxide

The mechanism of superconductivity in cuprates remains one of the big challenges of condensed matter physics.High Tc cuprates crystallize into layered perovskite structure featuring copper oxygen octahedral coordination. Due to the Jahn Teller effect in combination with the strong static Coulomb interaction, the octahedra in high Tc cuprates are elongated along the c axis, leading to a 3dx2-y2 orbital at the top of the band structure wherein the doped holes reside. This scenario gives rise to two dimensional characteristics in high Tc cuprates that favor d wave pairing symmetry. Here we report superconductivity in a cuprate Ba2CuO4-y wherein the local octahedron is in a very exceptional compressed version. The Ba2CuO4-y compound was synthesized at high pressure at high temperatures, and shows bulk superconductivity with critical temperature Tc above 70 K at ambient conditions. This superconducting transition temperature is more than 30 K higher than the Tc for the isostructural counterparts based on classical La2CuO4. X-ray absorption measurements indicate the heavily doped nature of the Ba2CuO4-y superconductor. In compressed octahedron the 3d3z2-r2 orbital will be lifted above the 3dx2-y2 orbital, leading to significant three dimensional nature in addition to the conventional 3dx2-y2 orbital. This work sheds important new light on advancing our comprehensive understanding of the superconducting mechanism of high Tc in cuprate materials.

General covariant geometric momentum, gauge potential and a Dirac fermion on a two-dimensional sphere

For a particle that is constrained on an ($N-1$)-dimensional ($N\geq2$) curved surface, the Cartesian components of its momentum in $N$-dimensional flat space is believed to offer a proper form of momentum for the particle on the surface, which is called the geometric momentum as it depends on the mean curvature. Once the momentum is made general covariance, the spin connection part can be interpreted as a gauge potential. The present study consists in two parts, the first is a discussion of the general framework for the general covariant geometric momentum. The second is devoted to a study of a Dirac fermion on a two-dimensional sphere and we show that there is the generalized total angular momentum whose three cartesian components form the $su(2)$ algebra, obtained before by consideration of dynamics of the particle, and we demonstrate that there is no curvature-induced geometric potential for the fermion.

Chiral terahertz wave emission from the Weyl semimetal TaAs

As a fascinating topological phase of matter, Weyl semimetals host chiral fermions with distinct chiralities and spin textures. Optical excitations involving those chiral fermions can induce exotic carrier responses, and in turn lead to novel optical phenomena. Here, we discover strong coherent chiral terahertz emission from the Weyl semimetal TaAs and demonstrate unprecedented manipulation over its polarization on a femtosecond timescale. Such polarization control is achieved via the colossal ultrafast photocurrents in TaAs arising from the circular or linear photogalvanic effect. We unravel that the chiral ultrafast photocurrents are attributed to the large band velocity changes when the Weyl fermions are excited from the Weyl bands to the high-lying bands. The photocurrent generation is maximized at near-IR frequency range close to 1.5 eV. Our findings provide an entirely new design concept for creating chiral photon sources using quantum materials and open up new opportunities for developing ultrafast opto-electronics using Weyl physics.

Characterization of the Hamamatsu VUV4 MPPCs for nEXO

In this paper we report on the characterization of the Hamamatsu VUV4 (S/N: S13370-6152) Vacuum Ultra-Violet (VUV) sensitive Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) as part of the development of a solution for the detection of liquid xenon scintillation light for the nEXO experiment. Various SiPM features, such as: dark noise, gain, correlated avalanches, direct crosstalk and Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE) were measured in a dedicated setup at TRIUMF. SiPMs were characterized in the range $163 \text{ } \text{K} \leq \text{T}\leq 233 \text{ } \text{K}$. At an over voltage of $3.1\pm0.2$ V and at $\text{T}=163 \text{ }\text{K}$ we report a number of Correlated Avalanches (CAs) per pulse in the $1 \upmu\text{s}$ interval following the trigger pulse of $0.161\pm0.005$. At the same settings the Dark-Noise (DN) rate is $0.137\pm0.002 \text{ Hz/mm}^{2}$. Both the number of CAs and the DN rate are within nEXO specifications. The PDE of the Hamamatsu VUV4 was measured for two different devices at $\text{T}=233 \text{ }\text{K}$ for a mean wavelength of $189\pm7\text{ nm}$. At $3.6\pm0.2$ V and $3.5\pm0.2$ V of over voltage we report a PDE of $13.4\pm2.6\text{ }\%$ and $11\pm2\%$, corresponding to a saturation PDE of $14.8\pm2.8\text{ }\%$ and $12.2\pm2.3\%$, respectively. Both values are well below the $24\text{ }\%$ saturation PDE advertised by Hamamatsu. More generally, the second device tested at $3.5\pm0.2$ V of over voltage is below the nEXO PDE requirement. The first one instead yields a PDE that is marginally close to meeting the nEXO specifications. This suggests that with modest improvements the Hamamatsu VUV4 MPPCs could be considered as an alternative to the FBK-LF SiPMs for the final design of the nEXO detector.
