Pressure Dependent Structural Changes and Predicted Electrical Polarization in Perovskite RMnO3

High pressure x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on RMnO3 (R=Dy, Ho and Lu) reveals that varying structural changes occurs for different R ions. Large lattice changes (orthorhombic strain) occur in DyMnO3 and HoMnO3 while the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion remains stable. On the other hand, in LuMnO3, Mn-O bond distortions are observed in the region 4-8 GPa with the broad minimum in the JT distortion. High pressure IR measurements indicate that a phonon near 390 cm-1 corresponding to the complex motion of the Mn and O ions changes anomalously for LuMnO3. It softens in the 4-8 GPa region, which is consistent with the structural change in Mn-O bonds and then hardens at high pressures. By contrast, the phonons continuously harden with increasing pressure for DyMnO3 and HoMnO3. DFT calculations show that the E-phase LuMnO3 is the most stable phase up to the 10 GPa pressure examined. Simulations indicate that the distinct structural change under pressure in LuMnO3 can possibly be used to optimize the electric polarization by pressure/strain.

This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Higgs Boson working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass). We identify the key elements of a precision Higgs physics program and document the physics potential of future experimental facilities as elucidated during the Snowmass study. We study Higgs couplings to gauge boson and fermion pairs, double Higgs production for the Higgs self-coupling, its quantum numbers and $CP$-mixing in Higgs couplings, the Higgs mass and total width, and prospects for direct searches for additional Higgs bosons in extensions of the Standard Model. Our report includes projections of measurement capabilities from detailed studies of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), a Gamma-Gamma Collider, the International Linear Collider (ILC), the Large Hadron Collider High-Luminosity Upgrade (HL-LHC), Very Large Hadron Colliders up to 100 TeV (VLHC), a Muon Collider, and a Triple-Large Electron Positron Collider (TLEP).

Charmonium, $D_s$ and $D_s^*$ from overlap fermion on DWF configurations

We take a new approach to determine the scale parameter $r_0$, the physical masses of strange and charm quarks through a global fit which incorporates continuum extrapolation, chiral extrapolation and quark mass interpolation to the lattice data. The charmonium and charm-strange meson spectrum are calculated with overlap valence quarks on $2+1$-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD Collaboration. We use the masses of $D_s$, $D_s^*$ and $J/ψ$ as inputs and obtain $m_c^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=1.110(24)\,{\rm GeV}$, $m_s^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=0.104(9)\,{\rm GeV}$ and $r_0=0.458(11)\,{\rm fm}$. Subsequently, the hyperfine-splitting of charmonium and $f_{D_s}$ are predicted to be $112(5)\,{\rm MeV}$ and $254(5)\,{\rm MeV}$, respectively.

Strangeness and charmness content of nucleon from overlap fermions on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion configurations

We present a calculation of the strangeness and charmness contents and of the nucleon from dynamical lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors. The calculation is performed with overlap valence quarks on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations. The configurations are generated by the RBC collaboration on a 24^3*64 lattice with sea quark mass am_l=0.005, am_s=0.04, and inverse lattice spacing a^{-1}=1.73GeV. Both actions have chiral symmetry which is essential in avoiding contamination due to the operator mixing with other flavors. Nucleon propagator and the quark loops are both computed with stochastic grid sources, while low-mode substitution and low-mode averaging methods are used respectively which substantially improve the signal to noise ratio. We obtain the strangeness matrix element f_{T_{s}} = m_s / M_N = 0.0334(62), and the charmness content f_{T_{c}} = m_c / M_N = 0.094(31) which is resolved from zero by 3σprecision for the first time.

Schottky mass measurements of heavy neutron-rich nuclides in the element range $70\leZ \le79$ at the ESR

Storage-ring mass spectrometry was applied to neutron-rich $^{197}$Au projectile fragments. Masses of $^{181,183}$Lu, $^{185,186}$Hf, $^{187,188}$Ta, $^{191}$W, and $^{192,193}$Re nuclei were measured for the first time. The uncertainty of previously known masses of $^{189,190}$W and $^{195}$Os nuclei was improved. Observed irregularities on the smooth two-neutron separation energies for Hf and W isotopes are linked to the collectivity phenomena in the corresponding nuclei.

Energy spectra of three electrons in SiGe/Si/SiGe laterally coupled triple quantum dots

We investigate the energy spectra of three electrons in SiGe/Si/SiGe equilateral triangular and symmetric linear triple quantum dots in the presence of magnetic (in either Faraday or Voigt configuration) and electric fields with single valley approximation by using the real-space configuration interaction method. The strong electron-electron Coulomb interaction, which is crucial to the energy spectra, is explicitly calculated whereas the weak spin-orbit coupling is treated perturbatively. In both equilateral triangular and symmetric linear triple quantum dots, we find doublet-quartet transition of ground-state spin configuration by varying dot size or interdot distance in the absence of external fields. This transition has not been reported in the literature on triple quantum dots. In the magnetic-field (Faraday configuration) dependence of energy spectra, we find anticrossings with large energy splittings between the energy levels with the same spin state in the absence of the spin-orbit coupling. This anticrossing behavior originates from the triple quantum dot confinement potential. In addition, with the inclusion of the spin-orbit coupling, we find that all the intersections shown in the equilateral triangular case become anticrossing whereas only part of the intersections in symmetric linear case show anticrossing behavior in the presence of magnetic field in either the Faraday or Voigt configuration. All the anticrossing behaviors are analyzed based on symmetry consideration. Moreover, we show that the electric field can effectively influence the energy levels and the charge configurations.

Direct observation of long-lived isomers in $^{212}$Bi

Long-lived isomers in 212Bi have been studied following 238U projectile fragmentation at 670 MeV per nucleon. The fragmentation products were injected as highly charged ions into the GSI storage ring, giving access to masses and half-lives. While the excitation energy of the first isomer of 212Bi was confirmed, the second isomer was observed at 1478(30) keV, in contrast to the previously accepted value of >1910 keV. It was also found to have an extended Lorentz-corrected in-ring halflife >30 min, compared to 7.0(3) min for the neutral atom. Both the energy and half-life differences can be understood as being due a substantial, though previously unrecognised, internal decay branch for neutral atoms. Earlier shell-model calculations are now found to give good agreement with the isomer excitation energy. Furthermore, these and new calculations predict the existence of states at slightly higher energy that could facilitate isomer de-excitation studies.

Spin-dependent inter- and intra-valley electron-phonon scattering in germanium

We investigate the spin-dependent electron-phonon scatterings of the $L$ and $Γ$ valleys and the band structure near the conduction band minima in germanium. We first construct a $16\times16$ ${\bm k}\cdot{\bm p}$ Hamiltonian in the vicinity of the $L$ point in germanium, which ensures the correctness of the band structure of the lowest three conduction bands and highest two valence bands. This Hamiltonian facilitates the analysis of the spin-related properties of the conduction electrons. We then demonstrate the phonon-induced electron scatterings of the $L$ and $Γ$ valleys, i.e., the intra-$Γ$/ $L$ valley, inter--$Γ$-$L$ valley and inter--$L$-$L$ valley scatterings in germanium. The selection rules and complete scattering matrices for these scatterings are calculated, where the scattering matrices for the intra-$Γ$ valley scattering, inter--$Γ$-$L$ valley scattering and the optical-phonon and the separated transverse-acoustic- and longitudinal-acoustic-phonon contributions to the intra-$Γ$ valley scattering have not been reported in the literature. The coefficients in these scattering matrices are obtained via the pseudo-potential calculation, which also verifies our selection rules and wave-vector dependence. We further discuss the Elliott-Yafet mechanisms in these electron-phonon scatterings with the ${\bm k}$$\cdot$${\bm p}$ eigenstates at the $L$ and $Γ$ valleys. Our investigation of these electron-phonon scatterings are essential for the study of the optical orientation of spin and hot-electron relaxation in germanium.

In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of model catalysts: At the edge of the gap

We present a High-Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (HP-XPS) and first-principles kinetic Monte Carlo study addressing the nature of the active surface in CO oxidation over Pd(100). Simultaneously measuring the chemical composition at the surface and in the near-surface gas-phase, we reveal both O-covered pristine Pd(100) and a surface oxide as stable, highly active phases in the near-ambient regime accessible to HP-XPS. Surprisingly, no adsorbed CO can be detected during high CO2 production rates, which can be explained by a combination of a remarkably short residence time of the CO molecule on the surface and mass-transfer limitations in the present set-up.

Technical Design Report for the: PANDA Micro Vertex Detector

This document illustrates the technical layout and the expected performance of the Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) of the PANDA experiment. The MVD will detect charged particles as close as possible to the interaction zone. Design criteria and the optimisation process as well as the technical solutions chosen are discussed and the results of this process are subjected to extensive Monte Carlo physics studies. The route towards realisation of the detector is outlined.

Hierarchy of fractional Chern insulators and competing compressible states

We study the phase diagram of interacting electrons in a dispersionless Chern band as a function of their filling. We find hierarchy multiplets of incompressible states at fillings ν=1/3, 2/5, 3/7, 4/9, 5/9, 4/7, 3/5 as well as ν=1/5,2/7. These are accounted for by an analogy to Haldane pseudopotentials extracted from an analysis of the two-particle problem. Important distinctions to standard fractional quantum Hall physics are striking: absent particle-hole symmetry in a single band, an interaction-induced single-hole dispersion appears, which perturbs and eventually destabilizes incompressible states as νincreases. For this reason the nature of the state at ν=2/3 is hard to pin down, while ν=5/7,4/5 do not seem to be incompressible in our system.

Forecasting Value-at-Risk with Time-Varying Variance, Skewness and Kurtosis in an Exponential Weighted Moving Average Framework

This paper provides an insight to the time-varying dynamics of the shape of the distribution of financial return series by proposing an exponential weighted moving average model that jointly estimates volatility, skewness and kurtosis over time using a modified form of the Gram-Charlier density in which skewness and kurtosis appear directly in the functional form of this density. In this setting VaR can be described as a function of the time-varying higher moments by applying the Cornish-Fisher expansion series of the first four moments. An evaluation of the predictive performance of the proposed model in the estimation of 1-day and 10-day VaR forecasts is performed in comparison with the historical simulation, filtered historical simulation and GARCH model. The adequacy of the VaR forecasts is evaluated under the unconditional, independence and conditional likelihood ratio tests as well as Basel II regulatory tests. The results presented have significant implications for risk management, trading and hedging activities as well as in the pricing of equity derivatives.

Technical Design Report for the: PANDA Straw Tube Tracker

This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM-stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy-loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

Pressure suppression of unconventional charge-density-wave state in PrRu4P12 studied by optical conductivity

Optical conductivity s(w) of PrRu4P12 has been studied under high pressure to 14 GPa, at low temperatures to 8 K, and at photon energies 12 meV-1.1 eV. The energy gap in s(w) at ambient pressure, caused by a metal-insulator transition due to an unconventional charge-density-wave formation at 63 K, is gradually filled in with increasing pressure to 10 GPa. At 14 GPa and below 30 K, s(w) exhibits a pronounced Drude-type component due to free carriers. This indicates that the initial insulating ground state at zero pressure has been turned into a metallic one at 14 GPa. This is consistent with a previous resistivity study under pressure, where the resistivity rapidly decreased with cooling below 30 K at 14 GPa. The evolution of electronic structure with pressure is discussed in terms of the hybridization between the 4f and conduction electrons.

RI/MOM renormalization constants (N_f=4) and the strong coupling constant (N_f=2+1+1) from twisted-mass QCD

We study RI/MOM renormalization constants of bilinear quark operators for $N_f=4$ and the strong coupling constant for $N_f=2+1+1$ using Wilson twisted-mass fermions. We use the "egalitarian" method to remove H(4) hypercubic artifacts non-perturbatively, which enables us to study physical quantities in a wide range of momenta. We then apply OPE in studying the running behavior of $Z_q$ and $α_s$, from which we are able to extract the Landau gauge dimension-two gluon condensate $ $ which is of phenomenological interest.

Energy spectra of three electrons in Si/SiGe single and vertically coupled double quantum dots

We study three-electron energy spectra in Si/SiGe single and vertically coupled double quantum dots where all the relevant effects, such as, the Zeeman splitting, spin-orbit coupling, valley coupling and electron-electron Coulomb interaction are explicitly included. In the absence of magnetic field, our results in single quantum dots agree well with the experiment by Borselli {\em et al.} [Appl. Phys. Lett. {\bf 98}, 123118 (2011)]. We identify the spin and valley configurations of the ground state in the experimental cases and give a complete phase-diagram-like picture of the ground state configuration with respect to the dot size and valley splitting. We also explicitly investigate the three-electron energy spectra of the pure and mixed valley configurations with magnetic fields in both Faraday and Voigt configurations. We find that the ground state can be switched between doublet and quartet by tuning the magnetic field and/or dot size. The three-electron energy spectra present many anticrossing points between different spin states due to the spin-orbit coupling, which are expected to benefit the spin manipulation. We show that the negligibly small intervalley Coulomb interaction can result in magnetic-field independent quartet-doublet degeneracy in the three-electron energy spectrum of the mixed valley configuration. Furthermore, we study the barrier-width and barrier-height dependences in vertically coupled double quantum dots with both pure and mixed valley configurations. Similar to the single quantum dot case, anticrossing behavior and quartet-doublet degeneracy are observed.

Correlation of conductivity and angle integrated valence band photoemission characteristics in single crystal iron perovskites for 300 K < T < 800 K: Comparison of surface and bulk sensitive methods

A single crystal monolith of La0.9Sr0.1FeO3 and thin pulsed laser deposited film of La0.8Sr0.2Fe0.8Ni0.2O3 were subject to angle integrated valence band photoemission spectroscopy in ultra high vacuum and conductivity experiments in ambient air at temperatures from 300 K to 800 K. Except for several sputtering and annealing cycles, the specimen were not prepared in-situ.. Peculiar changes in the temperature dependent, bulk representative conductivity profile as a result of reversible phase transitions, and irreversible chemical changes are semi-quantitatively reflected by the intensity variation in the more surface representative valence band spectra near the Fermi energy. X-ray photoelectron diffraction images reflect the symmetry as expected from bulk iron perovskites. The correlation of spectral details in the valence band photoemission spectra (VB PES) and details of the conductivity during temperature variation suggest that valuable information on electronic structure and transport properties of complex materials may be obtained without in-situ preparation.
