Einstein Probe Discovery of EP J182730.0-095633: A New Black Hole X-ray Binary Candidate in Faint Outburst?

Black hole X-ray binaries (candidates) currently identified in our galaxy are mainly transient sources, with the majority discovered through the detection of their X-ray outbursts. Among these, only four were found during faint outbursts exhibiting peak X-ray luminosities $L_{\rm X}\lesssim10^{36}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$, likely due to the previous lack of sensitive, wide-field monitoring instruments in the X-ray band. In this Letter, we present the discovery of an intriguing X-ray transient, EP J182730.0-095633, via the Einstein Probe (EP) and subsequent multi-wavelength follow-up studies. This transient, located on the Galactic plane, experienced a faint and brief X-ray outburst lasting about 20 days. Its X-ray spectrum is non-thermal and consistent with a power-law model with a nearly constant photon index of $\Gamma \sim2$ throughout the outburst. A long-lasting millihertz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) signal was detected in its X-ray light curve, centered around a frequency of $\sim0.04$ Hz. A transient near-infrared source was identified as its counterpart, although no optical emission was detectable, likely due to significant extinction. A radio counterpart was also observed, displaying an inverted radio spectrum with $\alpha\sim0.45$. The X-ray spectral and temporal characteristics, along with the multi-wavelength properties, indicate that the source is a faint low-mass X-ray binary, with the compact object likely being a black hole. This work demonstrates the potential of the EP in discovering new X-ray binaries by capturing faint-level X-ray outbursts.

Multidimensional Measurements of Beam Single Spin Asymmetries in Semi-inclusive Deep-inelastic Charged Kaon Electroproduction off Protons in the Valence Region

Measurements of beam single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering (SIDIS) with positively charged kaons off protons have been performed with 10.6 and 10.2 GeV incident electron beams using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. We report an analysis of the electroproduction of positively charged kaons over a large kinematic range of fractional energy, Bjorken $x$, transverse momentum, and photon virtualities $Q^2$ ranging from 1 GeV$^2$ up to 6 GeV$^2$. This is the first published multi-dimensionally binned CLAS12 measurement of a kaon SIDIS single spin asymmetry in the valence quark regime. The data provide constraints on the structure function ratio $F_{LU}^{\sin{\phi}}/F_{UU}$, where $F_{LU}^{\sin{\phi}}$ is a quantity with a leading twist of twist-3 that can reveal novel aspects of the quark-gluon correlations within the nucleon. The impact of the data on understanding the underlying reaction mechanisms and their kinematic variation is explored using theoretical models for the different contributing twist-3 parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs).

Magnetic excitation spectrum and Hamiltonian of the quantum spin chain BaCuTe2O6

The magnetic excitation spectrum and Hamiltonian of the quantum magnet BaCuTe2O6 is studied by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and density functional theory (DFT). INS on powder and single crystal samples reveals overlapping spinon continuua - the spectrum of an antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 spin chain - due to equivalent chains running along the a, b, and c directions. Long-range magnetic order onsets below TN = 6.3 K due to interchain interactions, and is accompanied by the emergence of sharp spin-wave excitations which replace the continuua at low energies. The spin-wave spectrum is highly complex and was successfully modelled achieving excellent agreement with the data. The extracted interactions reveal an intrachain interaction, J3 = 2.9 meV, while the antiferromagnetic hyperkagome interaction J2, is the sub-leading interaction responsible for coupling the chains together in a frustrated way. DFT calculations reveal a similar picture for BaCuTe2O6 of dominant J3 and sub-leading J2 antiferromagnetic interactions and also indicate a high sensitivity of the interactions to small changes of structure which could explain the very different Hamiltonians observed in the sister compounds SrCuTe2O6 and PbCuTe2O6.

Nonlinear co-generation of graphene plasmons for optoelectronic logic operations

Surface plasmons in graphene provide a compelling strategy for advanced photonic technologies thanks to their tight confinement, fast response and tunability. Recent advances in the field of all optical generation of graphene plasmons in planar waveguides offer a promising method for high speed signal processing in nanoscale integrated optoelectronic devices. Here, we use two counter propagating frequency combs with temporally synchronized pulses to demonstrate deterministic all optical generation and electrical control of multiple plasmon polaritons, excited via difference frequency generation (DFG). Electrical tuning of a hybrid graphene fibre device offers a precise control over the DFG phase matching, leading to tunable responses of the graphene plasmons at different frequencies across a broadband (0 - 50 THz) and provides a powerful tool for high speed logic operations. Our results offer insights for plasmonics on hybrid photonic devices based on layered materials and pave the way to high speed integrated optoelectronic computing circuits.

Multidimensional, high precision measurements of beam single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive $\pi^{+}$ electroproduction off protons in the valence region

High precision measurements of the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) from the proton have been performed using a 10.6~GeV incident electron beam and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. We report here a high precision multidimensional study of single $\pi^{+}$ SIDIS data over a large kinematic range in Bjorken x, fractional energy and transverse momentum of the hadron as well as photon virtualities $Q^{2}$ ranging from $1-7\,$GeV$^{2}$. In particular, the structure function ratio $F^{\sin\phi}_{LU}/F_{UU}$ has been determined, where $F^{\sin\phi}_{LU}$ is a twist-3 quantity that can reveal novel aspects of emergent hadron mass and quark-gluon correlations within the nucleon. The data's impact on the evolving understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms and their kinematic variation is explored using theoretical models for the different contributing transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions.

Modelling fertility potential in survivors of childhood cancer: An introduction to modern statistical and computational methods

Statistical and computational methods are widely used in today's scientific studies. Using a female fertility potential in childhood cancer survivors as an example, we illustrate how these methods can be used to extract insight regarding biological processes from noisy observational data in order to inform decision making. We start by contextualizing the computational methods with the working example: the modelling of acute ovarian failure risk in female childhood cancer survivors to quantify the risk of permanent ovarian failure due to exposure to lifesaving but nonetheless toxic cancer treatments. This is followed by a description of the general framework of classification problems. We provide an overview of the modelling algorithms employed in our example, including one classic model (logistic regression) and two popular modern learning methods (random forest and support vector machines). Using the working example, we show the general steps of data preparation for modelling, variable selection steps for the classic model, and how model performance might be improved utilizing visualization tools. We end with a note on the importance of model evaluation.

Spin-wave directional anisotropies in antiferromagnetic Ba$_{3}$NbFe$_{3}$Si$_{2}$O$_{14}$

Ba$_{3}$NbFe$_{3}$Si$_{2}$O$_{14}$ (langasite) is structurally and magnetically single domain chiral with the magnetic helicity induced through competing symmetric exchange interactions. Using neutron scattering, we show that the spin-waves in antiferromagnetic langasite display directional anisotropy. On applying a time reversal symmetry breaking magnetic field along the $c$-axis, the spin wave energies differ when the sign is reversed for either the momentum transfer $\pm$ $\vec{Q}$ or applied magnetic field $\pm$ $\mu_{0}$H. When the field is applied within the crystallographic $ab$-plane, the spin wave dispersion is directionally \textit{isotropic} and symmetric in $\pm$ $\mu_{0}$H. However, a directional anisotropy is observed in the spin wave intensity. We discuss this directional anisotropy in the dispersion in langasite in terms of a field induced precession of the dynamic unit cell staggered magnetization. Directional anisotropy, or often referred to as non reciprocal responses, can occur in antiferromagnetic phases in the absence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction or other effects resulting from spin-orbit coupling.

Valley and Zeeman Splittings in Multilayer Epitaxial Graphene Revealed by Circular Polarization Resolved Magneto-infrared Spectroscopy

Circular polarization resolved magneto-infrared studies of multilayer epitaxial graphene (MEG) are performed using tunable quantum cascade lasers in high magnetic fields up to 17.5 T. Landau level (LL) transitions in the monolayer and bilayer graphene inclusions of MEG are resolved, and considerable electron-hole asymmetry is observed in the extracted electronic band structure. For monolayer graphene, a four-fold splitting of the $n=0$ to $n=1$ LL transition is evidenced and attributed to the lifting of the valley and spin degeneracy of the zeroth LL and the broken electron-hole symmetry. The magnetic field dependence of the splitting further reveals its possible mechanisms. The best fit to experimental data yields effective $g$-factors, $g^*_{VS}=6.7$ and $g^*_{ZS}=4.8$, for the valley and Zeeman splitting, respectively.

Ba8MnNb6O24: a model two-dimensional spin-5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet

We successfully synthesized and characterized the triangular lattice anitferromagnet Ba$_8$MnNb$_6$O$_{24}$, which comprises equilateral spin-5/2 Mn$^{2+}$ triangular layers separated by six non-magnetic Nb$^{5+}$ layers. The detailed susceptibility, specific heat, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, and spin wave theory simulation on this system reveal that it has a 120 degree ordering ground state below T$_N$ = 1.45 K with in-plane nearest-neighbor exchange interaction ~0.11 meV. While the large separation 18.9 A between magnetic layers makes the inter-layer exchange interaction virtually zero, our results suggest that a weak easy-plane anisotropy is the driving force for the k$_m$ = (1/3 1/3 0) magnetic ordering. The magnetic properties of Ba$_8$MnNb$_6$O$_{24}$, along with its classical excitation spectra, contrast with the related triple perovskite Ba$_3$MnNb$_2$O$_9$, which shows easy-axis anisotropy, and the iso-structural compound Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$, in which the effective spin-1/2 Co$^{2+}$ spins do not order down to 60 mK and in which the spin dynamics shows sign of strong quantum effects.

Decoupled spin dynamics in the rare-earth orthoferrite YbFeO$_3$: Evolution of magnetic excitations through the spin-reorientation transition

In this paper we present a comprehensive study of magnetic dynamics in the rare-earth orthoferrite YbFeO$_3$ at temperatures below and above the spin-reorientation (SR) transition $T_{\mathrm{SR}}=7.6$ K, in magnetic fields applied along the $a, b$ and $c$ axes. Using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering, we observed that the spectrum of magnetic excitations consists of two collective modes well separated in energy: 3D gapped magnons with a bandwidth of $\sim$60 meV, associated with the antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered Fe subsystem, and quasi-1D AFM fluctuations of $\sim$1 meV within the Yb subsystem, with no hybridization of those modes. The spin dynamics of the Fe subsystem changes very little through the SR transition and could be well described in the frame of semiclassical linear spin-wave theory. On the other hand, the rotation of the net moment of the Fe subsystem at $T_{\mathrm{SR}}$ drastically changes the excitation spectrum of the Yb subsystem, inducing the transition between two regimes with magnon and spinon-like fluctuations. At $T < T_{\mathrm{SR}}$, the Yb spin chains have a well defined field-induced ferromagnetic (FM) ground state, and the spectrum consists of a sharp single-magnon mode, a two-magnon bound state, and a two-magnon continuum, whereas at $T > T_{\mathrm{SR}}$ only a gapped broad spinon-like continuum dominates the spectrum. In this work we show that a weak quasi-1D coupling within the Yb subsystem $J_\text{Yb-Yb}$, mainly neglected in previous studies, creates unusual quantum spin dynamics on the low energy scales. The results of our work may stimulate further experimental search for similar compounds with several magnetic subsystems and energy scales, where low-energy fluctuations and underlying physics could be "hidden" by a dominating interaction.

Lattice distortion effects on the frustrated spin-1 triangular-antiferromagnet A3NiNb2O9 (A = Ba, Sr and Ca)

In the geometrically frustrated materials with the low-dimensional and small spin moment, the quantum fluctuation could interfere with the complicated interplay of the spin, electron, lattice and orbital interactions, and host exotic ground states such as nematic spin-state and chiral liquid phase. While the quantum phases of the one-dimensional chain and S - 1/2 two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) had been more thoroughly investigated by both theorists and experimentalists, the work on S = 1 TLAF has been limited. We induced the lattice distortion into the TLAFs, A3NiNb2O9 (A = Ba, Sr, and Ca) with S (Ni2+) = 1, and applied the thermodynamic, magnetic and neutron scattering measurements. Although A3NiNb2O9 kept the non-collinear 120{\deg} antiferromagnetic phase as the ground state, the Ni2+-lattice changed from the equilateral triangle (A = Ba) into isosceles triangle (A = Sr and Ca). The inelastic neutron scattering data were simulated by the linear spin-wave theory, and the competition between the single-ion anisotropy and the exchange anisotropy from the distorted lattice was discussed.

Landau level spectroscopy of massive Dirac fermions in single-crystalline ZrTe5 thin flakes

We report infrared magneto-spectroscopy studies on thin crystals of an emerging Dirac material ZrTe5 near the intrinsic limit. The observed structure of the Landau level transitions and zero-field infrared absorption indicate a two-dimensional Dirac-like electronic structure, similar to that in graphene but with a small relativistic mass corresponding to a 9.4 meV energy gap. Measurements with circularly polarized light reveal a significant electron-hole asymmetry, which leads to splitting of the Landau level transitions at high magnetic fields. Our model, based on the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang effective Hamiltonian, quantitatively explains all observed transitions, determining the values of the Fermi velocity, Dirac mass (or gap), electron-hole asymmetry, and electron and hole g-factors.

The nature of spin excitations in the one-third magnetization plateau phase of Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$

Magnetization plateaus in quantum magnets---where bosonic quasiparticles crystallize into emergent spin superlattices---are spectacular yet simple examples of collective quantum phenomena escaping classical description. While magnetization plateaus have been observed in a number of spin-1/2 antiferromagnets, the description of their magnetic excitations remains an open theoretical and experimental challenge. Here, we investigate the dynamical properties of the triangular-lattice spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ in its one-third magnetization plateau phase using a combination of nonlinear spin-wave theory and neutron scattering measurements. The agreement between our theoretical treatment and the experimental data demonstrates that magnons behave semiclassically in the plateau in spite of the purely quantum origin of the underlying magnetic structure. This allows for a quantitative determination of Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ exchange parameters. We discuss the implication of our results to the deviations from semiclassical behavior observed in zero-field spin dynamics of the same material and conclude they must have an intrinsic origin.

HSEP: Heterogeneity-aware Hierarchical Stable Election Protocol for WSNs

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are increasing to handle complex situations and functions. In these networks some of the nodes become Cluster Heads (CHs) which are responsible to aggregate data of from cluster members and transmit it to Base Stations (BS). Those clustering techniques which are designed for homogenous network are not enough efficient for consuming energy. Stable Election Protocol (SEP) introduces heterogeneity in WSNs, consisting of two type of nodes. SEP is based on weighted election probabilities of each node to become CH according to remaining energy of nodes. We propose Heterogeneity-aware Hierarchal Stable Election Protocol (HSEP) having two level of energies. Simulation results show that HSEP prolongs stability period and network lifetime, as compared to conventional routing protocols and having higher average throughput than selected clustering protocols in WSNs.
