The third realization of the International Celestial Reference Frame by very long baseline interferometry

A new realization of the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF) is presented based on the work achieved by a working group of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) mandated for this purpose. This new realization, referred to as ICRF3, is based on nearly 40 years of data acquired by very long baseline interferometry. The ICRF3 includes positions at 8.4 GHz for 4536 sources, supplemented with positions at 24 GHz for 824 sources and at 32 GHz for 678 sources, for a total of 4588 sources. A subset of 303 sources among these, uniformly distributed on the sky, are identified as "defining sources" and as such serve to define the axes of the frame. Source positions are reported for epoch 2015.0 and must be propagated for observations at other epochs for the most accurate needs, accounting for the acceleration toward the Galactic center, which results in a dipolar proper motion field of amplitude 0.0058 milliarcsecond/yr (mas/yr). The frame shows a median positional uncertainty of about 0.1 mas in right ascension and 0.2 mas in declination, with a noise floor of 0.03 mas in the individual source coordinates. A subset of 500 sources is found to have extremely accurate positions at 8.4 GHz, in the range of 0.03 to 0.06 mas. Comparing ICRF3 with the Gaia Celestial Reference Frame 2 in the optical domain, there is no evidence for deformations larger than 0.03 mas between the two frames. Significant positional offsets between the three ICRF3 frequencies are detected for about 5% of the sources. Moreover, a notable fraction (22%) of the sources shows optical and radio positions that are significantly offset. There are indications that these positional offsets may be the manifestation of extended source structures. This third realization of the ICRF was adopted by the IAU at its 30th General Assembly in August 2018 and replaced the previous realization, ICRF2, on January 1, 2019.

The ICRF-3: Status, plans, and progress on the next generation International Celestial Reference Frame

The goal of this presentation is to report the latest progress in creation of the next generation of VLBI-based International Celestial Reference Frame, ICRF3. Two main directions of ICRF3 development are improvement of the S/X-band frame and extension of the ICRF to higher frequencies. Another important task of this work is the preparation for comparison of ICRF3 with the new generation optical frame GCRF expected by the end of the decade as a result of the Gaia mission.

An analysis of source motions derived from position time series

In this paper an attempt is made to extract a systematic part from the source motions obtained from the position time series provided by several IVS Analysis Centers in the framework of the ICRF-2 project. Our preliminary results show that the radio source velocities and the parameters of the systematic part of the velocity field differ substantially between the source position time series, which does not allow us to get a reliable solution for the coefficients of spherical harmonics.

On detection of the free inner core nutation from VLBI data

Several attempts to discover the FICN signal in VLBI nutation series made during last years failed. In this paper, we present some results of our further steps in this direction, unfortunately not successful either. We investigated several VLBI CPO series by means of spectral and wavelet analysis. It has been shown that there are several periodic signals with close amplitude around the expected FICN period without any prevailing one that can be reliably associated with the FICN. The most interesting for further analysis is a relatively stable oscillation with period of 800 days, which is, however, beyond the intervals predicted in other studies cited above. It seems to be necessary to improve theoretical estimates of the FICN period to make its search in the observational data more promising.

On the Galactic aberration constant

In this work, we analyzed all available determinations of the Galactic rotation parameters $R_0$ and $Ω_0$ made during last 10 years to derive the most probable value of the Galactic aberration constant $A = R_0 Ω_0^2/c$. We used several statistical methods to obtain reliable estimates of $R_0$ and $Ω_0$ and their realistic errors. In result, we have obtained the value of $A = 5.0 \pm 0.3$ $μ$as/yr as the current best estimate of the GA constant. We suggest that the proposed value of the GA constant can be safely used in practice during coming years.

Accuracy assessment of the UT1 prediction method based on 100-year series analysis

A new method has been developed at the Siberian Research Institute of Metrology (SNIIM) for highly accurate prediction of UT1 and Pole coordinates. The method is based on construction of a general polyharmonic model of the variations of the Earth rotation parameters using all the data available for the last 80-100 years, and modified autoregression technique. In this presentation, a detailed comparison was made of real-time UT1 predictions computed making use of this method in 2006-2010 with simultaneous predictions computed at the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS). Obtained results have shown that proposed method provides better accuracy at different prediction lengths.

Forthcoming mutual events of planets and astrometric radio sources

Radio astronomy observations of close approaches of the Solar system planets to compact radio sources as well as radio source occultations by planets may be of large interest for planetary sciences, dynamical astronomy, and testing gravity theories. In this paper, we present extended lists of occultations of astrometric radio sources observed in the framework of various astrometric and geodetic VLBI programs by planets, and close approaches of planets to radio sources expected in the nearest years. Computations are made making use of the EPOS software package.

Analysis of Polar Motion Variations from 170-year Observation Series

This work is devoted to investigation of low frequency variations in Polar motion (PM). It has been shown that the main PM features can be effectively investigated using not only time series of the Pole coordinates, but also using series of latitude variations obtained from observations at one observatory. Such an approach allows us to increase the length of observation series available for analysis. In our study, we extended the IERS PM series back to 1840. We investigate trends and (quasi) harmonic oscilla-tions with periods from one year to decades. The main results were obtained making use of the Singular Spectrum Analysis. Other methods were also used for specific analysis and independent check. The most interesting results are detection of two new large phase jumps in the 1840s and 2000s, and revealing of 80-year period in the PM variations.

A New Combined European Permanent Network Station Coordinates Solution

The EUREF (International Association of Geodesy (IAG) Reference Frame Sub-Commission for Europe) network of continuously operating GPS stations (EPN) was primarily established for reference frame maintenance, and also plays an important role for geodynamical research in Europe. The main goal of this paper is to obtain an independent homogeneous time-series of the EPN station coordinates, which is also available in SINEX format. A new combined solution of the EPN station coordinates was computed. The combination was performed independently for every week, in three steps: 1. the stated constraints on the coordinates were removed from the individual solutions of the Analysis Centers; 2. the de-constrained solutions were aligned to ITRF2000; 3. the resulting solutions were combined using the Helmert block-ing technique. All the data from GPS week 900 to week 1302 (April 1997 - December 2004) were used. We investigated in detail the behavior of the transformation parameters aligning the new combined solution to ITRF2000. In general, the time-series of the transformation parameters show a good stability in time although small systematic effects can be seen, most likely caused by station instabilities. A comparison of the new combined solution to the official EUREF weekly combined solution is also presented.

Non-linear vector ANN predictor for Earth rotation parameters forecast

Many approaches are developed for the forecasting of the Earth rotation pa-rameters. In this work, we consider long-term vector prediction scheme realized on the artificial neural network. Learning set is formed on basis of the Taken' algorithm. Our approach allows us to obtain the vector of the parameter values and escape the expo-nential growth of the prediction errors. The versions of the prediction enhancement based on the using for nonlinear corrector are discussed.

On Prediction of EOP

Two methods of prediction of the Pole coordinates and TAI-UTC were tested -- extrapolation of the deterministic components and ARIMA. It was found that each of these methods is most effective for certain length of prognosis. For short-time prediction ARIMA algorithm yields more accurate prognosis, and for long-time one extrapolation is preferable. So, the combined algorithm is being used in practice of IAA EOP Service. The accuracy of prognosis is close to accuracy of IERS algorithms. For prediction of nutation the program KSV-1996-1 by T. Herring is being used.

Parameters of the Free Core Nutation from VLBI Data

Several VLBI EOP series were investigated with goal of determination of parameters of the Free Core Nutation (FCN). Both the amplitude and period of the FCN were studied using spectral and wavelet analysis. Our analysis reveals a variability of both the amplitude (known also from other investigations) and the period (or phase) of the FCN nutation. The FCN amplitude varies in the range about 0.1--0.3 mas, and the FCN period -- in the range about 415--490 solar days. The latter may be also explained by changes in the FCN phase. Comparison of time variations of the FCN period and amplitude obtained by different authors and methods shows substantial discrepancies at the edges of the period of observations.
