Quantum Graphs and Random-Matrix Theory

For simple connected graphs with incommensurate bond lengths and with unitary symmetry we prove the Bohigas-Giannoni-Schmit conjecture in its most general form. Using supersymmetry and taking the limit of infinite graph size, we show that the generating function for every (P, Q) correlation function for both closed and open graphs coincides with the corresponding expression of random-matrix theory. We use that the classical Perron-Frobenius operator is bistochastic and possesses a single eigenvalue +1. In the quantum case that implies the existence of a zero (or massless) mode of the effective action. That mode causes universal fluctuation properties. Avoiding the saddle-point approximation we show that for graphs that are classically mixing (i.e., for which the spectrum of the classical Perron-Frobenius operator possesses a finite gap) and that do not carry a special class of bound states, the zero mode dominates in the limit of infinite grapg size.

Universal Quantum Graphs

For time-reversal invariant graphs we prove the Bohigas-Giannoni-Schmit conjecture in its most general form: For graphs that are mixing in the classical limit, all spectral correlation functions coincide with those of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble of random matrices. For open graphs, we derive the analogous identities for all S matrix correlation functions.

Chaotic Scattering on Individual Quantum Graphs

For chaotic scattering on quantum graphs, the semiclassical approximation is exact. We use this fact and employ supersymmetry, the colour-flavour transformation, and the saddle-point approximation to calculate the exact expression for the lowest and asymptotic expressions in the Ericson regime for all higher correlation functions of the scattering matrix. Our results agree with those available from the random-matrix approach to chaotic scattering. We conjecture that our results hold universally for quantum-chaotic scattering.

Universal Chaotic Scattering on Quantum Graphs

We calculate the S-matrix correlation function for chaotic scattering on quantum graphs and show that it agrees with that of random--matrix theory (RMT). We also calculate all higher S-matrix correlation functions in the Ericson regime. These, too, agree with RMT results as far as the latter are known. We concjecture that our results give a universal description of chaotic scattering.

Chaos in fermionic many-body systems and the metal-insulator transition

We show that finite Fermi systems governed by a mean field and a few-body interaction generically possess spectral fluctuations of the Wigner-Dyson type and are, thus, chaotic. Our argument is based on an analogy to the metal-insulator transition. We construct a sparse random-matrix ensemble ScE that mimics that transition. Our claim then follows from the fact that the generic random-matrix ensemble modeling a fermionic interacting many-body system is much less sparse than ScE.

Spectral fluctuation properties of constrained unitary ensembles of Gaussian-distributed random matrices

We investigate the spectral fluctuation properties of constrained ensembles of random matrices (defined by the condition that a number N(Q) of matrix elements vanish identically; that condition is imposed in unitarily invariant form) in the limit of large matrix dimension. We show that as long as N(Q) is smaller than a critical value (at which the quadratic level repulsion of the Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices may be destroyed) all spectral fluctuation measures have the same form as for the Gaussian unitary ensemble.

Level Repulsion in Constrained Gaussian Random-Matrix Ensembles

Introducing sets of constraints, we define new classes of random-matrix ensembles, the constrained Gaussian unitary (CGUE) and the deformed Gaussian unitary (DGUE) ensembles. The latter interpolate between the GUE and the CGUE. We derive a sufficient condition for GUE-type level repulsion to persist in the presence of constraints. For special classes of constraints, we extend this approach to the orthogonal and to the symplectic ensembles. A generalized Fourier theorem relates the spectral properties of the constraining ensembles with those of the constrained ones. We find that in the DGUEs, level repulsion always prevails at a sufficiently short distance and may be lifted only in the limit of strictly enforced constraints.

Symmetry Properties of the k-Body Embedded Unitary Ensemble of Random Matrices

We extend the recent study of the k-body embedded Gaussian ensembles by Benet et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 101601-1 and Ann. Phys. 292 (2001) 67) and by Asaga et al. (cond-mat/0107363 and cond-mat/ 0107364). We show that central results of these papers can be derived directly from the symmetry properties of both, the many-particle states and the random k-body interaction. We offer new insight into the structure of the matrix of second moments of the embedded ensemble, and of the supersymmetry approach. We extend the concept of the embedded ensemble and define it purely group-theoretically.

Ergodicity of Random-Matrix Theories: The Unitary Case

We prove ergodicity of unitary random-matrix theories by showing that the autocorrelation function with respect to energy or magnetic field strength of any observable vanishes asymptotically. We do so using Efetov's supersymmetry method, a polar decomposition of the saddle-point manifold, and an asymptotic evaluation of the boundary terms generated in this fashion.

Asymptotic Expansion for the Magnetoconductance Autocorrelation Function

We complement a recent calculation (P.B. Gossiaux and the present authors, Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) in press) of the autocorrelation function of the conductance versus magnetic field strength for ballistic electron transport through microstructures with the shape of a classically chaotic billiard coupled to ideal leads. The function depends on the total number M of channels and the parameter t which measures the difference in magnetic field strengths. We determine the leading terms in an asymptotic expansion for large t at fixed M, and for large M at fixed t/M. We compare our results and the ones obtained in the previous paper with the squared Lorentzian suggested by semiclassical theory.

Magnetoconductance Autocorrelation Function for Few--Channel Chaotic Microstructures

Using the Landauer formula and a random matrix model, we investigate the autocorrelation function of the conductance versus magnetic field strength for ballistic electron transport through few-channel microstructures with the shape of a classically chaotic billiard coupled to ideal leads. This function depends on the total number M of channels and the parameter t which measures the difference in magnetic field strengths. Using the supersymmetry technique, we calculate for any value of M the leading terms of the asymptotic expansion for small t. We pay particular attention to the evaluation of the boundary terms. For small values of M, we supplement this analytical study by a numerical simulation. We compare our results with the squared Lorentzian suggested by semiclassical theory and valid for large M. For small M, we present evidence for non--analytic behavior of the autocorrelation function at t = 0.

Crossover from Orthogonal to Unitary Symmetry for Ballistic Electron Transport in Chaotic Microstructures

We study the ensemble-averaged conductance as a function of applied magnetic field for ballistic electron transport across few-channel microstructures constructed in the shape of classically chaotic billiards. We analyse the results of recent experiments, which show suppression of weak localization due to magnetic field, in the framework of random-matrix theory. By analysing a random-matrix Hamiltonian for the billiard-lead system with the aid of Landauer's formula and Efetov's supersymmetry technique, we derive a universal expression for the weak-localization contribution to the mean conductance that depends only on the number of channels and the magnetic flux. We consequently gain a theoretical understanding of the continuous crossover from orthogonal symmetry to unitary symmetry arising from the violation of time-reversal invariance for generic chaotic systems.
