Squarefree polynomials and Mobius values in short intervals and arithmetic progressions

We calculate the mean and variance of sums of the Möbius function and the indicator function of the squarefrees, in both short intervals and arithmetic progressions, in the context of the ring of polynomials over a finite field of $q$ elements, in the limit $q\to \infty$. We do this by relating the sums in question to certain matrix integrals over the unitary group, using recent equidistribution results due to N. Katz, and then by evaluating these integrals. In many cases our results mirror what is either known or conjectured for the corresponding problems involving sums over the integers, which have a long history. In some cases there are subtle and surprising differences. The ranges over which our results hold is significantly greater than those established for the corresponding problems in the number field setting.

The fluctuations in the number of points on a hyperelliptic curve over a finite field

The number of points on a hyperelliptic curve over a field of $q$ elements may be expressed as $q+1+S$ where $S$ is a certain character sum. We study fluctuations of $S$ as the curve varies over a large family of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$. For fixed genus and growing $q$, Katz and Sarnak showed that $S/\sqrt{q}$ is distributed as the trace of a random $2g\times 2g$ unitary symplectic matrix. When the finite field is fixed and the genus grows, we find that the the limiting distribution of $S$ is that of a sum of $q$ independent trinomial random variables taking the values $\pm 1$ with probabilities $1/2(1+q^{-1})$ and the value 0 with probability $1/(q+1)$. When both the genus and the finite field grow, we find that $S/\sqrt{q}$ has a standard Gaussian distribution.

Matrix elements for the quantum cat map: Fluctuations in short windows

We study fluctuations of the matrix coefficients for the quantized cat map. We consider the sum of matrix coefficients corresponding to eigenstates whose eigenphases lie in a randomly chosen window, assuming that the length of the window shrinks with Planck's constant. We show that if the length of the window is smaller than the square root of Planck's constant, but larger than the separation between distinct eigenphases, then the variance of this sum is proportional to the length of the window, with a proportionality constant which coincides with the variance of the individual matrix elements corresponding to Hecke eigenfunctions.

Lower bounds for moments of L-functions

The moments of central values of families of L-functions have recently attracted much attention and, with the work of Keating and Snaith, there are now precise conjectures for their limiting values. We develop a simple method to establish lower bounds of the conjectured order of magnitude for several such families of L-functions. As an example we work out the case of the family of all Dirichlet L-functions to a prime modulus.

On the distribution of matrix elements for the quantum cat map

For many classically chaotic systems it is believed that the quantum wave functions become uniformly distributed, that is the matrix elements of smooth observables tend to the phase space average of the observable. In this paper we study the fluctuations of the matrix elements for the desymmetrized quantum cat map. We present a conjecture for the distribution of the normalized matrix elements, namely that their distribution is that of a certain weighted sum of traces of independent matrices in SU(2). This is in contrast to generic chaotic systems where the distribution is expected to be Gaussian. We compute the second and fourth moment of the normalized matrix elements and obtain agreement with our conjecture.

Eigenvalue spacings for regular graphs

We carry out a numerical study of fluctuations in the spectrum of regular graphs. Our experiments indicate that the level spacing distribution of a generic k-regular graph approaches that of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble of random matrix theory as we increase the number of vertices. A review of the basic facts on graphs and their spectra is included.

Linear statistics of low-lying zeros of L--functions

We consider linear statistics of the scaled zeros of Dirichlet $L$--functions, and show that the first few moments converge to the Gaussian moments. The number of Gaussian moments depends on the particular statistic considered. The same phenomenon is found in Random Matrix Theory, where we consider linear statistics of scaled eigenphases for matrices in the unitary group. In that case the higher moments are no longer Gaussian. We conjecture that this also happens for Dirichlet $L$--functions.

Random matrix theory, the exceptional Lie groups, and L-functions

There has recently been interest in relating properties of matrices drawn at random from the classical compact groups to statistical characteristics of number-theoretical L-functions. One example is the relationship conjectured to hold between the value distributions of the characteristic polynomials of such matrices and value distributions within families of L-functions. These connections are here extended to non-classical groups. We focus on an explicit example: the exceptional Lie group G_2. The value distributions for characteristic polynomials associated with the 7- and 14-dimensional representations of G_2, defined with respect to the uniform invariant (Haar) measure, are calculated using two of the Macdonald constant term identities. A one parameter family of L-functions over a finite field is described whose value distribution in the limit as the size of the finite field grows is related to that of the characteristic polynomials associated with the 7-dimensional representation of G_2. The random matrix calculations extend to all exceptional Lie groups

Linear statistics for zeros of Riemann's zeta function

We consider a smooth counting function of the scaled zeros of the Riemann zeta function, around height T. We show that the first few moments tend to the Gaussian moments, with the exact number depending on the statistic considered.

Mock-Gaussian Behaviour for Linear Statistics of Classical Compact Groups

We consider the scaling limit of linear statistics for eigenphases of a matrix taken from one of the classical compact groups. We compute their moments and find that the first few moments are Gaussian, whereas the limiting distribution is not. The precise number of Gaussian moments depends upon the particular statistic considered.

Hecke theory and equidistribution for the quantization of linear maps of the torus

We study semi-classical limits of eigenfunctions of a quantized linear hyperbolic automorphism of the torus ("cat map"). For some values of Planck's constant, the spectrum of the quantized map has large degeneracies. Our first goal in this paper is to show that these degeneracies are coupled to the existence of quantum symmetries. There is a commutative group of unitary operators on the state-space which commute with the quantized map and therefore act on its eigenspaces. We call these "Hecke operators", in analogy with the setting of the modular surface. We call the eigenstates of both the quantized map and of all the Hecke operators "Hecke eigenfunctions". Our second goal is to study the semiclassical limit of the Hecke eigenfunctions. We will show that they become equidistributed with respect to Liouville measure, that is the expectation values of quantum observables in these eigenstates converge to the classical phase-space average of the observable.

On quantum ergodicity for linear maps of the torus

We prove a strong version of quantum ergodicity for linear hyperbolic maps of the torus (``cat maps''). We show that there is a density one sequence of integers so that as N tends to infinity along this sequence, all eigenfunctions of the quantum propagator at inverse Planck constant N are uniformly distributed. A key step in the argument is to show that for a hyperbolic matrix in the modular group, there is a density one sequence of integers N for which its order (or period) modulo N is somewhat larger than the square root of N.

The distribution of spacings between quadratic residues

We study the distribution of spacings between squares modulo q, where q is square-free and highly composite, in the limit as the number of prime factors of q goes to infinity. We show that all correlation functions are Poissonian, which among other things, implies that the spacings between nearest neighbors, normalized to have unit mean, have an exponential distribution.
