Sequential and simultaneous emission of fragments from p+Al collisions

The energy and angular dependencies of double differential cross sections d^2sigma/dOmegadE were measured for p,d,t,^{3,4,6}He,^{6,7,8}Li,{7,9,10}Be, and ^{10,11,12}B produced in collisions of 1.2, 1.9, and 2.5 GeV protons with an Al target. The spectra and angular distributions of Li, Be, and B isotopes indicate a presence of two contributions: an isotropic, low energy one which is attributed to the evaporation of particles from excited remnants of the intranuclear cascade, and an anisotropic part which is interpreted to be due to multifragmentation of the remnants. It was found that such a hypothesis leads to very good description of spectra and angular distributions of all intermediate mass fragments (^6He-^{12}B) using the critical value of the excitation energy per nucleon as a single parameter, varying slowly with the beam energy.

ABC Effect in Basic Double-Pionic Fusion --- Observation of a new resonance?

We report on a high-statistics measurement of the basic double pionic fusion reaction $pn \to dπ^0π^0$ over the energy region of the so-called ABC effect, a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the $ππ$-invariant mass spectrum. The measurements were performed with the WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal the ABC effect to be associated with a Lorentzian shaped energy dependence in the integral cross section. The observables are consistent with a resonance with $I(J^P) =0(3^+)$ in both $pn$ and $ΔΔ$ systems. Necessary further tests of the resonance interpretation are discussed.

Evidence of Ni break-up from total production cross sections in p+Ni collisions

The total production cross sections of light charged particles (LCPs), intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) and heavy reaction products of p+Ni collisions available in the literature have been compared with predictions of a two-step model in the proton beam energy range from reaction threshold up to approximately 3 GeV. Model cross sections were calculated assuming, that the reaction proceeds via an intranuclear cascade of nucleon-nucleon collisions followed by evaporation of particles from an equilibrated, heavy target residuum. The shape of the excitation functions was well described by model calculations for all reaction products. The magnitude of the cross sections was reasonably well reproduced for heavy reaction products, i.e. for nuclei heavier than Al, but the cross sections for lighter products were systematically underestimated. This fact was used as an argument in favor of a significant break-up contribution to the reaction mechanism. The present conclusions are supported by recently published results of investigations of differential cross sections in p+Ni collisions, which showed that hypothesis of the break-up of target nucleus is indispensable for a good reproduction of d2 sigma/dOmega dE for LCPs and IMFs.

Variation of nonequilibrium processes in p+Ni system with beam energy

The energy and angular dependence of double differential cross sections dsigma/dOmega dE were measured for p, d, t, 3,4He, 6,7Li, 7,9Be, and 10,11B produced in collisions of 0.175 GeV protons with Ni target. The analysis of measured dfferential cross sections allowed to extract total production cross sections for ejectiles listed above. The shape of the spectra and angular distributions indicate the presence of other nonequilibrium processes besides the emission of nucleons from the intranuclear cascade, and besides the evaporation of various particles from remnants of intranuclear cascade. These nonequilibrium processes consist of coalescence of nucleons into light charged particles during the intranuclear cascade, of the fireball emission which contributes to the cross sections of protons and deuterons, and of the break-up of the target nucleus which leads to the emission of intermediate mass fragments. All such processes were found earlier at beam energies 1.2, 1.9, and 2.5 GeV for Ni as well as for Au targets, however, significant differences in properties of these processes at high and low beam energy are observed in the present study.

Comparison of nonequilibrium processes in p+Ni and p+Au collisions at GeV energies

The energy and angular dependence of double differential cross sections d2sigma/dOmega dE were measured for p, d, t, 3,4,6He, 6,7,8Li, 7,9,10Be, 10,11B, and C produced in collisions of 1.2, 1.9, and 2.5 GeV protons with a Ni target. The shape of the spectra and angular distributions does almost not change whereas the absolute value of the cross sections increases by a factor about 1.7 for all ejectiles in this beam energy range. It was found that energy and angular dependencies of the cross sections cannot be reproduced by the microscopic model of intranuclear cascade with coalescence of nucleons and the statistical model for evaporation of particles from excited, equilibrated residual nuclei. The inclusion of nonequilibrium processes, described by a phenomenological model of the emission from fast and hot moving sources, resulting from break-up of the target nucleus by impinging proton, leads to very good reproduction of data. Cross sections of these processes are quite large, exhausting approximately half of the total production cross sections. Due to good reproduction of energy and angular dependencies of d2sigma/dOmega dE by model calculation it was possible to determine total production cross sections for all studied ejectiles. Results obtained in this work point to the analogous reaction mechanism for proton induced reactions on Ni target as that observed previously for Au target in the same beam energy range.

Physics Performance Report for PANDA: Strong Interaction Studies with Antiprotons

To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. This report presents a summary of the physics accessible at PANDA and what performance can be expected.

Competition of coalescence and "fireball" processes in nonequilibrium emission of light charged particles from p+Au collisions

The energy and angular dependence of double differential cross sections was measured for p,d,t,He,Li,Be, and B isotopes produced in collisions of 1.2 and 1.9 GeV protons with Au target. The shape of the spectra and angular distributions almost does not change in the beam energy range from 1.2 to 2.5 GeV, however, the absolute value of the cross sections increases for all ejectiles. A phenomenological model of two emitting, moving sources reproduces very well spectra and angular distributions of intermediate mass fragments. Double differential cross sections for light charged particles (LCP) were analyzed in the frame of the microscopic model of intranuclear cascade (INC) with coalescence of nucleons and statistical model for evaporation of particles from excited residual nuclei. Energy and angular dependencies of data agree satisfactorily neither with predictions of microscopic intranuclear cascade calculations for protons, nor with coalescence calculations for other LCP. Phenomenological inclusion of another reaction mechanism - emission of LCP from a "fireball", i.e., fast and hot moving source - combined with the microscopic model calculations of INC, coalescence and evaporation of particles leads to very good description of the data. It was found that nonequilibrium processes are very important for production of LCP. They exhaust 40-80% of the total cross sections - depending on the emitted particles. Coalescence and "fireball" emission give comparable contributions to the cross sections with exception of 3He data where coalescence clearly dominates. The ratio of sum of all nonequilibrium processes to those proceeding through stage of statistical equilibrium does almost not change in the beam energy range from 1.2 GeV to 2.5 GeV for all light charged particles.

Direct Nuclear Reactions in Lithium-Lithium Systems: 7Li+7Li at Elab = 2 - 16 MeV

Angular distributions of 7Li(7Li,t), (7Li,alpha) and (7Li,6He) reactions were measured for laboratory energies from 2 - 16 MeV. Exact finite range DWBA analyses were performed with the aim to identify contributions of direct processes and to investigate the applicability of DWBA to such few nucleon systems. It turned out that DWBA can be successfully applied to estimate differential and total cross sections of direct transfer processes in 7Li+7Li interaction. The direct mechanism was found to play a dominant role in most of these reactions but significant contributions of other, strongly energy dependent processes were also established. It is suggested that these processes might be due to isolated resonances superimposed on the backround of statistical fluctuations arising from interference of compound nucleus and direct transfer contributions.

Non-equilibrium emission of complex fragments from p+Au collisions at 2.5 GeV proton beam energy

Energy and angular dependence of double differential cross sections d$^2σ$/d$Ω$dE was measured for reactions induced by 2.5 GeV protons on Au target with isotopic identification of light products (H, He, Li, Be, and B) and with elemental identification of heavier intermediate mass fragments (C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, and Al). It was found that two different reaction mechanisms give comparable contributions to the cross sections. The intranuclear cascade of nucleon-nucleon collisions followed by evaporation from an equilibrated residuum describes low energy part of the energy distributions whereas another reaction mechanism is responsible for high energy part of the spectra of composite particles. Phenomenological model description of the differential cross sections by isotropic emission from two moving sources led to a very good description of all measured data. Values of the extracted parameters of the emitting sources are compatible with the hypothesis claiming that the high energy particles emerge from pre-equilibrium processes consisting in a breakup of the target into three groups of nucleons; small, fast and hot fireball of $\sim$ 8 nucleons, and two larger, excited prefragments, which emits the light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments. The smaller of them contains $\sim$ 20 nucleons and moves with velocity larger than the CM velocity of the proton projectile and the target. The heavier prefragment behaves similarly as the heavy residuum of the intranuclear cascade of nucleon-nucleon collisions. %The mass and charge dependence of the total production cross %sections was extracted from the above analysis for all observed %reaction products. This dependence follows the power low behavior %(A$^{-τ}$ or Z$^{-τ}$).

Transport analysis of K+ production in proton-nucleus reactions

The production of $K^+$ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions from 1.0 to 2.3 GeV is analyzed with respect to one-step nucleon-nucleon $(NN\to N Y K^+$) and two-step $Δ$-nucleon $(ΔN \to K^+ Y N$) or pion-nucleon $(πN \to K^+ Y $) production channels on the basis of a coupled-channel transport approach (CBUU) including the kaon final-state-interactions (FSI). Momentum-dependent potentials for the nucleon, hyperon and kaon in the final state are included as well as $K^+$ elastic rescattering in the target nucleus. The transport calculations are compared to the experimental $K^+$ spectra taken at COSY-Jülich. Our systematic analysis of $K^+$ spectra from $^{12}C$, $^{63}Cu$, $^{107}Ag$ and $^{197}Au$ targets as well as their momentum differential ratios gives a repulsive $K^+$ potential of $20\pm 5 $ MeV at normal nuclear matter density.

Inclusive K^+ meson production in proton-nucleus interactions

The production of K^+ mesons in pA (A = D, C, Cu, Ag, Au) collisions has been investigated at the COoler SYnchrotron COSY-Jülich for beam energies T_p = 1.0 - 2.3 GeV. Double differential inclusive pC cross sections at forward angles theta < 12 degrees as well as the target-mass dependence of the K^+ momentum spectra have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer. Far below the free NN threshold at T_{NN}=1.58 GeV the spectra reveal a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus. From the target-mass dependence of the cross sections at higher energies, the repulsive in-medium potential of K^+ mesons can be deduced. Using pN cross-section parameterisations from literature and our measured pD data we derive a cross-section ratio of sigma(pn -> K^+ X) / sigma(pp -> K^+ X) ~ (3-4).

Nonmesonic decay of the Lambda hyperon in nuclear matter - implications on the weak Lambda-N interaction

The lifetime of the Lambda hyperon in heavy hypernuclei as measured by the COSY-13 Collaboration in proton - Au, Bi and U collisions has been analysed to yield tau(Lambda) = (145 +- 11) ps. This value for tau(Lambda) is compatible with the lifetime extracted from antiproton annihilation on Bi and U targets, however, much more accurate. We find that the dependence of the lifetime tau(Lambda) on the mass of hypernuclei indicates a violation of the phenomenological Delta I = 1/2 rule known from the weak mesonic decays of strange particles. Evidence of kaon nuclear and Coulomb potential effects on soft K+ production from nuclei

The ratio of forward K+ production on copper, silver and gold targets to that on carbon has been measured at proton beam energies between 1.5 and 2.3 GeV as a function of the kaon momentum p_K using the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich. The strong suppression in the ratios observed for p_K<200-250 MeV/c can be ascribed to a combination of Coulomb and nuclear repulsion in the K+A system. This opens a new way to investigate the interaction of K+-mesons in the nuclear medium. Our data are consistent with a K+A nuclear potential of V_K~20 MeV at low kaon momenta and normal nuclear density. Given the sensitivity of the data to the kaon potential, the current experimental precision might allow one to determine V_K to better than 3 MeV.

K$^+$ production in proton-nucleus reactions and the role of momentum-dependent potentials

The production of $K^+$ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions from 1.0 to 2.5 GeV is analyzed with respect to one-step nucleon-nucleon $(NN\to N Y K^+$) and two-step $Δ$-nucleon $(ΔN \to K^+ Y N$) or pion-nucleon $(πN \to K^+ Y $) production channels on the basis of a coupled-channel transport approach (CBUU) including the kaon final state interactions. The influence of momentum-dependent potentials for the nucleon, hyperon and kaon in the final state are studied as well as the importance of $K^+$ elastic rescattering in the target nucleus. The transport calculations are compared to the experimental $K^+$ spectra taken at LBL Berkeley, SATURNE, CELSIUS, GSI and COSY-Jülich. It is found that the momentum-dependent baryon potentials effect the excitation function of the $K^+$ cross section; at low bombarding energies of $\sim $ 1.0 GeV the attractive baryon potentials in the final state lead to a relative enhancement of the kaon yield whereas the net repulsive potential at bombarding energies $\sim$ 2 GeV causes a decrease of the $K^+$ cross section. Furthermore it is pointed out, that especially the $K^+$ spectra at low momenta (or kinetic energy $T_K$) allow to determine the in-medium $K^+$ potential almost model independently due to a relative shift of the $K^+$ spectra in kinetic energy that arises from the acceleration of the kaons when propagating out of the nuclear medium to free space, i.e. converting potential energy to kinetic energy of the free kaon.

The lifetime of the Lambda hyperon bound in hypernuclei produced by p+U collisions

The nonmesonic decay of the Lambda hyperon has been investigated by observation of delayed fission from heavy hypernuclei produced in proton-U collisions at Tp = 1.9 GeV. The lifetime of heavy hypernuclei with masses A approximately 220 obtained in the present work, i.e. tau = 138 +- 6 (stat.) +-m 17 (syst.) ps, is the most accurate result for heavy hypernuclei produced in proton and antiproton induced collisions on a U target so far. Nonmesonic decay of the Lambda-hyperon in hypernuclei produced by p+Au collisions

The lifetime of the Lambda-hyperon for the nonmesonic decay Lambda N ---> N N has been determined by a measurement at COSY Juelich of the delayed fission of heavy hypernuclei produced in proton - Au collisions at T_p=1.9 GeV. It is found that heavy hypernuclei with mass numbers A= 180 +- 5 and atomic numbers Z= 74 +-2 fission with a lifetime 130ps +- 13ps (stat.) +- 15ps (syst.) . This value together with the results obtained for other heavy hypernuclei in previous investigations indicates (on the confidence level of 0.9) a violation of the phenomenological Delta I = 1/2 rule for Lambda N ---> NN transitions as known from the weak mesonic decays of kaons and hyperons.
