Observation of multipartite spin entanglement in a cuprate chain

Quantum materials are believed to host highly entangled states of matter, but probing and quantifying such entanglement has long remained experimentally elusive. Here, we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) as a probe of multipartite spin entanglement. By projecting the RIXS cross section onto the appropriate spin excitation channel, we show that the Quantum Fisher Information can be extracted directly from the measured spin fluctuation spectrum. We detect at least 7-partite spin entanglement in the model one-dimensional cuprate Sr$_2$CuO$_3$, revealing one of the largest entanglement depths yet reported in a solid. The observed entanglement depth agrees with Hubbard-model expectations and persists to elevated temperatures. Our results establish RIXS as an experimental probe of many-body spin entanglement and provide a platform for extensions to charge and orbital sectors and nonequilibrium settings.

Scintillator Tile Batch Test of CEPC AHCAL

Hadron calorimeter (HCAL) is an essential sub-detector of the baseline detector system for Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC). We plan to build an Analog Hadron CALorimeter (AHCAL) prototype based on the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA). The AHCAL of CEPC uses steel as absorber and scintillator tiles read out by Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) as sensitive medium. The energy linearity and resolution of the calorimeter depends on the light yield uniformity of sensitive medium. It is essential to qualify the entire detector production in order to select scintillator tiles with light yield uniform within 10\%. An automated batch test platform has been designed with 144 channels, an automated 3D servo motor. The paper summarizes the tests performed on more than 15000 scintillator tiles. The measured light yield, corrected for the set-up response non-uniformity, is around 12.9 p.e. . About 91.6\% of scintillators (14219 pieces) are qualified within 10\% of light yield window.

Design of Prototype Front-end Digital Module for Direct Dark Matter Detection based on LAr

Liquid argon (LAr) with a high light yield of approximately 40 photons per keV is an attractive target for the direct detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are well motivated galactic dark matter candidates. We studies a front-end electronics design for a LAr dark matter detector with the scintillation read out by PMT, which has an input dynamic range from 5pC to 1nC, and high resolution that single photoelectron can be distinguished. In this paper, we present the design of front-end digital module (FDM) which is the important portion of electronics. The prototype FDM is equipped with 14-bit 1-GSPS analog-to-digital converters (ADC), and the performance of prototype FDM had been test in lab (e.g. ENOB is 10.40 bits @298 MHz). Moreover, this prototype FDM had been tested with LAr detector collaboratively and test results are also presented.

Experimental realization of optomechanically induced non-reciprocity

Non-reciprocal devices, such as circulators and isolators, are indispensable components in classical and quantum information processing in an integrated photonic circuit. Aside from those applications, the non-reciprocal phase shift is of fundamental interest for exploring exotic topological photonics, such as the realization of chiral edge states and topological protection. However, incorporating low optical-loss magnetic materials into a photonic chip is technically challenging. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate non-magnetic non-reciprocity using optomechanical interactions in a whispering-gallery microresonator, as proposed by Hafezi and Rabl. Optomechanically induced non-reciprocal transparency and amplification are observed, and a non-reciprocal phase shift of up to 40 degrees is demonstrated in this study. The results of this study represent an important step towards integrated all-optical controllable isolators and circulators, as well as non-reciprocal phase shifters.

LLAGN and jet-scaling probed with the EVN

Accreting black holes on all mass scales (from stellar to supermassive) appear to follow a nonlinear relation between X-ray luminosity, radio luminosity and BH mass, indicating that similar physical processes drive the central engines in X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, in recent years an increasing number of BH systems have been identified that do not fit into this scheme. These outliers may be the key to understand how BH systems are powered by accretion. Here we present results from EVN observations of a sample of low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN) with known mass that have unusually high radio powers when compared with their X-ray luminosity.

The application of MultiView Methods for High Precision Astrometric Space VLBI at Low Frequencies

High precision astrometric Space Very Long Baseline Interferometry (S-VLBI) at the low end of the conventional frequency range, i.e. 20cm, is a requirement for a number of high priority science goals. These are headlined by obtaining trigonometric parallax distances to pulsars in Pulsar--Black Hole pairs and OH masers anywhere in the Milky Way Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. We propose a solution for the most difficult technical problems in S-VLBI by the MultiView approach where multiple sources, separated by several degrees on the sky, are observed simultaneously. We simulated a number of challenging S-VLBI configurations, with orbit errors up to 8m in size and with ionospheric atmospheres consistant with poor conditions. In these simulations we performed MultiView analysis to achieve the required science goals. This approach removes the need for beam switching requiring a Control Moment Gyro, and the space and ground infrastructure required for high quality orbit reconstruction of a space-based radio telescope. This will dramatically reduce the complexity of S-VLBI missions which implement the phase-referencing technique.

Plasmonic orbital angular momentum manipulation through light control

Plasmonic vortices (PV) excited by a highly focused radially polarized optical vortex (RPOV) beam on a metal surface are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The proposed method reveals a direct phase singularity and orbital angular momentum (OAM) transfer from an incident structured beam to its counterpart in surface plasmon with dynamic, reconfigurable and high-efficiency advantages. The plasmonic field pattern, phase distributions, Poynting vector and focusing efficiency of PV are studied in detail. Experimental verification further shows that nanoparticles can be confined and manipulated within the region of PV and orbital rotation speed of the trapped particles is altered dynamically by changing the topological charge of the incident light.

Magnetodielectric effect and optic soft mode behaviour in quantum paraelectric EuTiO3 ceramics

Infrared reflectivity and time-domain terahertz transmission spectra of EuTiO3 ceramics revealed a polar optic phonon at 6 - 300K, whose softening is fully responsible for the recently observed quantum paraelectric behaviour. Even if our EuTiO3 ceramics show lower permittivity than the single crystal due to a reduced density and/or small amount of secondary pyrochlore Eu2Ti2O7 phase, we confirmed the magnetic field dependence of the permittivity, also slightly smaller than in single crystal. Attempt to reveal the soft phonon dependence at 1.8K on the magnetic field up to 13T remained below the accuracy of our infrared reflectivity experiment.
