Non-Hermitian anisotropic XY model with intrinsic rotation-time reversal symmetry

We systematically study the non-Hermitian version of the one-dimensional anisotropic XY model, which in its original form, is a unique exactly solvable quantum spin model for understanding the quantum phase transition. The distinguishing features of this model are that it has full real spectrum if all the eigenvectors are intrinsic rotation-time reversal (RT) symmetric rather than parity-time reversal (PT) symmetric, and that its Hermitian counterpart is shown approximately to be an experimentally accessible system, an isotropic XY spin chain with nearest neighbor coupling. Based on the exact solution, exceptional points which separated the unbroken and broken symmetry regions are obtained and lie on a hyperbola in the thermodynamic limit. It provides a nice paradigm to elucidate the complex quantum mechanics theory for a quantum spin system.

Probability-preserving evolution in a non-Hermitian two-band model

A non-Hermitian PT-symmetric system can have full real spectrum but does not ensure probability preserving time evolution, in contrast to that of a Hermitian system. We present a non-Hermitian two-band model, which is comprised of dimerized hopping terms and staggered imaginary on-site potentials, and study the dynamics in the exact PT-symmetric phase based on the exact solution. It is shown that an initial state, which does not involve two equal-momentum-vector eigenstates in different bands, obeys perfectly probability-preserving time evolution in terms of the Dirac inner product. Beyond this constriction, the quasi-Hermitian dynamical behaviors, such as non-spreading propagation and fractional revival of a Gaussian wave packet, are also observed.

Dynamics of one-dimensional tight-binding models with arbitrary time-dependent external homogeneous fields

The exact propagators of two one-dimensional systems with time-dependent external fields are presented by following the path-integral method. It is shown that the Bloch acceleration theorem can be generalized to the impulse-momentum theorem in quantum version. We demonstrate that an evolved Gaussian wave packet always keeps its shape in an arbitrary time-dependent homogeneous driven field. Moreover, that stopping and accelerating of a wave packet can be achieved by the pulsed field in a diabatic way.

Gaussian enveloped decoherence of the atomic states in quantum cavity

We revisit the decoherence of the atomic state in the resonant Jaynes-Cummings model with the field initially being in a coherent state. We show that the purity of the atom exhibits oscillating Gaussian dependence on the time with a width independent of the initial atomic state. It is also shown that when the atom and the coherent state match each other in phase, the atomic decoherence is Gaussian time dependence.

Hermitian dynamics in a class of pseudo-Hermitian networks

We investigate the connection between pseudo-Hermitian and Hermitian descriptions for a lattice, which consists of a set of isomorphic pseudo-Hermitian clusters. We show that such non-Hermitian systems can act as Hermitian systems. This is made possible by considering the dynamics of a state involving the superposition of a single eigenmode of each isomorphic clusters. It still holds when multiple eigenmodes are involved when additional restriction on the state is imposed. This Hermitian dynamics is demonstrated for the case of an exactly solvable PT-symmetric ladder system.

Dynamics of a tight-binding ring threaded by time-periodic magnetic flux

We analytically study the effects of periodically alternating magnetic fields on the dynamics of a tight-binding ring. It is shown that an arbitrary quantum state can be frozen coherently at will by the very frequent square-wave field as well as the monochromatic-wave field when the corresponding optimal amplitudes are taken. Numerical simulations show that the average fidelity depends on not only the system parameters, but also the features of the quantum state. Moreover, taking the initial zero-momentum Gaussian wave packets as examples, we show the dependence of the threshold frequency on the width of the packet for the given average fidelities. These observations provide a means to perform the quantum state engineering.

Hermitian scattering behavior for the non-Hermitian scattering center

We study the scattering problem for the non-Hermitian scattering center, which consists of two Hermitian clusters with anti-Hermitian couplings between them. Counterintuitively, it is shown that it acts as a Hermitian scattering center, satisfying $|r| ^{2}+|t| ^{2}=1$, i.e., the Dirac probability current is conserved, when one of two clusters is embedded in the waveguides. This conclusion can be applied to an arbitrary parity-symmetric real Hermitian graph with additional PT-symmetric potentials, which is more feasible in experiment. Exactly solvable model is presented to illustrate the theory. Bethe ansatz solution indicates that the transmission spectrum of such a cluster displays peculiar feature arising from the non-Hermiticity of the scattering center.

Partitioning technique for a discrete quantum system

We develop the partitioning technique for quantum discrete systems. The graph consists of several subgraphs: a central graph and several branch graphs, with each branch graph being rooted by an individual node on the central one. We show that the effective Hamiltonian on the central graph can be constructed by adding additional potentials on the branch-root nodes, which generates the same result as does the the original Hamiltonian on the entire graph. Exactly solvable models are presented to demonstrate the main points of this paper.

A physical interpretation for the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

We explore a way of finding the link between a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and a Hermitian one. Based on the analysis of Bethe Ansatz solutions for a class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and the scattering problems for the corresponding Hermitian Hamiltonians. It is shown that a scattering state of an arbitrary Hermitian lattice embedded in a chain as the scattering center shares the same wave function with the corresponding non-Hermitian tight binding lattice, which consists of the Hermitian lattice with two additional on-site complex potentials, no matter the non-Hermitian is broken PT symmetry or even non-PT. An exactly solvable model is presented to demonstrate the main points of this article.

Dimerization-assisted energy transport in light-harvesting complexes

We study the role of the dimer structure of light-harvesting complex II (LH2) in excitation transfer from the LH2 (without a reaction center (RC)) to the LH1 (surrounding the RC), or from the LH2 to another LH2. The excited and un-excited states of a bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) are modeled by a quasi-spin. In the framework of quantum open system theory, we represent the excitation transfer as the total leakage of the LH2 system and then calculate the transfer efficiency and average transfer time. For different initial states with various quantum superposition properties, we study how the dimerization of the B850 BChl ring can enhance the transfer efficiency and shorten the average transfer time.

Perfect coherent shift of bound pairs in strongly correlated systems

In the present work we extend the concept of coherent shift for the extended Bose-Hubbard model and Fermi-Hubbard model. We present two types of local bound pair (BP) for Bose system and one type for Fermi system. It is shown exactly that the perfect coherent shift can be achieved in such models. We find that for a Bose on-site BP, the perfect coherent shift condition depends on the nearest-neighbor interaction strength and the momentum of the incident single particle wavepacket, while for the other two types of BPs, it is independent of the initial state in the proposed systems.

SU(2) symmetry in a Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling

We study the underlying symmetry in a spin-orbit coupled tight-binding model with Hubbard interaction. It is shown that, in the absence of the on-site interaction, the system possesses the SU(2) symmetry arising from the timereversal symmetry. The influence of the on-site interaction on the symmetry depends on the topology of the networks: The SU(2) symmetry is shown to be the spin rotation symmetry of a simply-connected lattice, so it still holds in the presence of the Hubbard correlation. In contrary, the on-site interaction breaks the SU(2) symmetry of a multi-connected lattice.

Fast transfer and efficient coherent separation of bound cluster in the extended Hubbard model

We study the formation and dynamics of the bound pair (BP) and bound triple (BT) in strongly correlated extended Hubbard model for both Bose and Fermi systems. We find that the bandwidths of the BP and BT gain significantly when the on-site and nearest-neighbor interaction strengths reach the corresponding resonant points. This allows the fast transfer and efficient coherent separation of the BP and BT. The exact result shows that the success probability of the coherent separation is unity in the optimal system. In Fermi system, this finding can be applied to create distant entanglement without the need of temporal control and measurement process.

Physics counterpart of the PT non-hermitian tight-binding chain

We explore an alternative way of finding the link between a PT non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and a Hermitian one. Based on the analysis of the scattering problem for an imaginary potential and its time reversal process, it is shown that any real-energy eigenstate of a PT tight-binding lattice with on-site imaginary potentials shares the same wave function with a resonant transmission state of the corresponding Hermitian lattice embedded in a chain. It indicates that the PT eigenstate of a PT non-Hermitian Hamiltonian has connection to the resonance transmission state of the extended Hermitian Hamiltonian.

Asymmetric coherent transmission for single particle diode and gyroscope

We study the single particle scattering process in a coherent multi-site system consisting of a tight-binding ring threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm flux and several attaching leads. The asymmetric behavior of scattering matrix is discovered analytically in the framework of both Bethe Ansatz and Green's function formalism. It is found that, under certain conditions, a three-site electronic system can behave analogous to a perfect semiconductor diode where current flows only in one direction. The general result is also valid for a neutral particle system since the effective magnetic flux may be implemented by a globe rotation. This observation means that the three-site system can serve as an orientation measuring gyroscope due to the approximate linear dependence of the current difference of two output leads on the rotational angular velocity.

Topological Peierls Transitions in Möbius Molecular Devices

We study the topological properties of Peierls transitions in a monovalent Möbius ladder. Along the transverse and longitudinal directions of the ladder, there exist plenty Peierls phases corresponding to various dimerization patterns. Resulted from a special modulation, namely, staggered modulation along the longitudinal direction, the ladder system in the insulator phase behaves as a ``topological insulator'', which possesses charged solitons as the gapless edge states existing in the gap. Such solitary states promise the dispersionless propagation along the longitudinal direction of the ladder system. Intrinsically, these non-trivial edges states originates from the Peierls phases boundary, which arises from the non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ topological configuration.

Rigorous results for tight-binding networks: particle trapping and scattering

We investigate the particle trapping and scattering properties in a tight-binding network which consists of several subgraphs. The particle trapping condition is proved under which particles can be trapped in a subgraph without leaking. Based on exact solutions for the configuration of a $π$-shaped lattice, it is argued that the bound states in a specified subgraph are of two types, resonant and evanescent. It is also shown that, when such a subgraph is embedded in a one-dimensional chain as the waveguide, an incident wave experiences total reflection if its energy matches the resonant bound state energy.

Solutions of PT symmetric tight-binding chain and its equivalent Hermitian counterpart

We study the Non-Hermitian quantum mechanics for the discrete system. This paper gives an exact analytic single-particle solution for an $N$-site tight-binding chain with two conjugated imaginary potentials $\pm iγ$ at two end sites, which Hamiltonian has parity-time symmetry ($\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry). Based on the Bethe ansatz results, it is found that, in single-particle subspace, this model is comprised of two phases, an unbroken symmetry phase with a purely real energy spectrum in the region $γ\prec γ_{c}$ and a spontaneously-broken symmetry phase with $N-2$ real and 2 imaginary eigenvalues in the region $γ\succ γ_{c}$. The behaviors of eigenfunctions and eigenvalues in the vicinity of $γ_{c}$ are investigated. It is shown that the boundary of two phases possesses the characteristics of exceptional point. We also construct the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian of the present model in the framework of metric-operator theory. We find out that the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian can be written as another bipartite lattice model with real long-range hoppings.
