Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Phase Fluctuations in Cuprate Superconductors: A QED$_3$ Unified Theory of the Pseudogap State

A d-wave superconductor, its phase coherence progressively destroyed by unbinding of vortex-antivortex pairs, suffers an instability related to chiral symmetry breaking in two-flavor QED$_3$. The chiral manifold exhibits large degeneracy spanned by physical states acting as inherent ``competitors'' of d-wave superconductivity. Two of these states are associated with antiferromagnetic insulator and ``stripe'' phases, known to be stable in the pseudogap regime of cuprates near half-filling. The theory also predicts additional, yet unobserved state: a d+ip phase-incoherent superconductor.

Quasiparticle Hall Transport of d-wave Superconductors in Vortex State

We present a theory of quasiparticle Hall transport in strongly type-II superconductors within their vortex state. We establish the existence of integer quantum spin Hall effect in clean unconventional $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductors in the vortex state from a general analysis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The spin Hall conductivity $σ^s_{xy}$ is shown to be quantized in units of $\frac{\hbar}{8π}$. This result does not rest on linearization of the BdG equations around Dirac nodes and therefore includes inter-nodal physics in its entirety. In addition, this result holds for a generic inversion-symmetric lattice of vortices as long as the magnetic field $B$ satisfies $H_{c1} \ll B \ll H_{c2}$. We then derive the Wiedemann-Franz law for the spin and thermal Hall conductivity in the vortex state. In the limit of $T \to 0$, the thermal Hall conductivity satisfies $κ_{x y}=\frac{4π^2}{3}(\frac{k_B}{\hbar})^2 T σ^s_{xy}$. The transitions between different quantized values of $σ^s_{xy}$ as well as relation to conventional superconductors are discussed.

Quasiparticles and Vortices in Unconventional Superconductors

Quasiparticles in the vortex lattice of strongly type-II superconductors are investigated by means of a singular gauge transformation applied to the tight binding lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. We present a detailed derivation of the gauge invariant effective low energy Hamiltonian for the quasiparticle-vortex system and show how the physics of the "Doppler shift" and "Berry phase" can be incorporated at the Hamiltonian level by working in the singular gauge. In particular, we show that the "Berry phase" effect manifests itself in the effective Hamiltonian through a half-flux Aharonov-Bohm scattering of quasiparticles off vortices and stress the important role that this effect plays in the quasiparticle dynamics. Full numerical solutions in the regime of intermediate fields H_c1<<B<<H_c2 are presented for model superconductors with s-, p- and d-wave symmetries and with square and triangular vortex lattices. For s- and p-wave cases we obtain low energy bound states in the core, in agreement with the existing results. For d-wave case only extended quasiparticle states exist. We investigate in detail the nature of these extended states and provide comparison to the previous results within linearized ``Dirac fermion'' model. We also investigate internodal interference effects when vortex and ionic lattices have high degree of commensurability and discuss various specific choices for the singular gauge transformation.

Flux tubes, visons, and vortices in spin-charge separated superconductors

The idea of spin-charge separation in cuprate superconductors has been recently energized by Senthil and Fisher who formulated a Z_2 gauge theory and, within its context, proposed a ``vison detection'' experiment as a test for topological order in a sample with multiply connected geometry. Here we show that the same experiment can be performed to test for the spin-charge separation in U(1) [but not in SU(2)] theory and argue that vortex core spectroscopy can in fact distinguish between the different symmetries of the fictitious gauge field.

Vortex state in a doped Mott insulator

We analyze the recent vortex core spectroscopy experiments in cuprate superconductor and discuss what can be learned from them about the nature of the ground state in these compounds. We argue that the data are inconsistent with the assumption of a simple metallic ground state and exhibit characteristics of a doped Mott insulator. A theory for a vortex core in such a doped Mott insulator is developed based on the U(1) gauge field slave boson model and is shown to exhibit properties qualitatively consistent with the experimental data.

Quasiparticles in the vortex lattice of unconventional superconductors: Bloch waves or Landau levels?

A novel singular gauge transformation is developed for quasiparticles in the mixed state of a strongly type-II superconductor which permits a full solution of the problem at low and intermediate fields. For a periodic vortex lattice the natural low-energy quasiparticle states are Bloch waves rather than Landau levels discussed in the recent literature. The new representation elucidates the physics considerably and provides fresh insights into the spectral properties of such systems.

Berry Phase Theory of Anomalous Hall Effect: Application to Colossal Magnetoresistance Manganites

We show that the Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) observed in Colossal Magnetoresistance Manganites is a manifestation of Berry phase effects caused by carrier hopping in a non-trivial spin background. We determine the magnitude and temperature dependence of the Berry phase contribution to the AHE, finding that it increases rapidly in magnitude as the temperature is raised from zero through the magnetic transition temperature T_c, peaks at a temperature $T_{max} > T_c$ and decays as a power of T, in agreement with experimental data. We suggest that our theory may be relevant to the anomalous hall effect in conventional ferromagnets as well.

Quasiparticle spectra in the vicinity of a d-wave vortex

We discuss the evolution of the local quasiparticle spectral density and the related tunneling conductance measurable by the scanning tunneling microscope, as a function of distance r and angle θfrom the vortex core in a d_{x^2-y^2} superconductor. We consider the effects of electronic disorder and of a strongly anisotropic tunneling matrix element, and show that in real materials they will likely obscure the ~1/r asymptotic tail in the zero-bias tunneling conductance expected from the straightforward semiclassical analysis. We also give a prediction for the tunneling conductance anisotropy around the vortex core and establish a connection to the structure of the tunneling matrix element.

de Haas-van Alphen Oscillations in a Superconducting State at High Magnetic Fields

Low-temperature quantum oscillations of the dHvA amplitude are shown to persist far below the upper critical field of a strongly type-II superconductor, due to the gapless nature of the BCS quasiparticle spectrum in high fields. The dHvA amplitude in the superconducting state is smaller than its normal state countpart by factor ~[max(T,Gamma]/delta]**2, where Gamma is the damping. This factor reflects the presence of a small gapless portion of the fermi surface, surrounded by regions where the BCS gap is large. The agreement with recent experimental data on V3Si is very good.

Superconductivity in High Magnetic Field:Excitation Spectrum and Tunneling Properties

The quasiparticle excitation spectrum of a type-II superconductor placed in high magnetic field is shown to be gapless. The gap turns to zero at the points in the MBZ which are in correspondence with the vortex lattice in real space. When the field decreases below certain critical value, branch crossing occur and gaps starts opening up at the Fermi surface. The strong dispersion around gapless points leads to algebraic temperature dependence in the thermodynamic functions and the algebraic voltage dependence in the tunneling conductance between the microscope tip and superconductor in an STM experiment.
