Hadroproduction of $W^+ W^- b \bar{b}$ at NLO accuracy matched with shower Monte Carlo programs

We present the computation of the differential cross section for the process $pp(\bar{p}) \to (W^+\,W^-\,b\,\bar{b} \to)\;e^+\,ν_e\,μ^-\,\barν_μ\,b\, \bar{b}+X$ at NLO QCD accuracy matched to Shower Monte Carlo (SMC) simulations using PowHel, on the basis of the interface between HELAC-NLO and POWHEG-BOX. We include all resonant and non-resonant contributions. This is achieved by fully taking into account the effect of off-shell t-quarks and off-shell W-bosons in the complex mass scheme. We also present a program called DECAYER that can be used to let the t-quarks present in the event files for $pp(\bar{p}) \to {t\,\bar{t}\,X}$ processes decay including both the finite width of the t-quarks and spin correlations. We present predictions for both the Tevatron and the LHC, with emphasis on differences emerging from three different $W^+\,W^-\,b\,\bar{b}$ hadroproduction computations: (i) full implementation of the $p\,p(\bar{p}) \to W^+\,W^-\,b\,\bar{b}$ process, (ii) generating on-shell t-quarks pushed off-shell with a Breit-Wigner finite width and decayed by DECAYER, and (iii) on-shell t-quark production followed by decay in the narrow width approximation, as described by the SMC.

Hadroproduction of $t\,\bar{t}\,b\,\bar{b}$ final states at LHC: predictions at NLO accuracy matched with Parton Shower

We present predictions for the hadroproduction of $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ final states at the LHC with collision energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 8TeV and 14TeV at NLO accuracy matched with parton shower, as obtained with PowHel+ PYTHIA. We quantify the effects of parton shower and hadronization. We find these are in general moderate except the effect of the decay of heavy particles, which can modify significantly some distributions, like that of the invariant mass of the two leading b-jets. We also show kinematic distributions obtained with cuts inspired to those recently employed by the CMS collaboration. For these predictions, we present the theoretical uncertainty bands, related to both scale and PDF variations. We find that these uncertainties are only moderately affected by the change of the collision energy.

Les Houches 2013: Physics at TeV Colliders: Standard Model Working Group Report

This Report summarizes the proceedings of the 2013 Les Houches workshop on Physics at TeV Colliders. Session 1 dealt primarily with (1) the techniques for calculating standard model multi-leg NLO and NNLO QCD and NLO EW cross sections and (2) the comparison of those cross sections with LHC data from Run 1, and projections for future measurements in Run 2.

Weighing the Neutrino

We investigate the potential of short-baseline experiments in order to measure the dispersion relation of the (muon) neutrino, with a prospect of eventually measuring the neutrino mass. As a byproduct, the experiment would help to constrain parameters of Lorentz-violating effects in the neutrino sector. The potential of a high-flux laser-accelerated proton beam (e.g., at the upcoming ELI facility), incident on a thick target composed of a light element to produce pions, with a subsequent decay to muons and muon-neutrinos, is discussed. We find a possibility for a muon neutrino mass measurement of unprecedented accuracy.

Top-antitop pair hadroproduction in association with a heavy boson at the NLO QCD accuracy + Parton Shower

The PowHel framework allows to make predictions of total and differential cross-sections of multiparticle hadroproduction processes at both NLO QCD accuracy and NLO QCD matched to Parton Shower, on the basis of the interface between the POWHEG-BOX and HELAC-NLO codes. It has already been applied to study several processes involving a top-antitop pair in association with a third particle or hadronic jet. Our most recent predictions concern top-antitop-V hadroproduction (with V = W or Z), at both parton and hadron level, by considering different decay channels (hadronic and leptonic) of the heavy particles. In particular, we show the results of our phenomenological analyses under the same system of cuts also recently adopted by the CMS collaboration at LHC.

Z0 - boson production in association with a top anti-top pair at NLO accuracy with parton shower effects

We present predictions for the production cross section of a Standard Model Z0-boson in association with a top-antitop pair at the next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD, matched with shower Monte Carlo programs to evolve the system down to the hadronization energy scale. We adopt a framework based on three well established numerical codes, namely the POWHEG-BOX, used for computing the cross section, HELAC-NLO, which generates all necessary input matrix elements, and finally a parton shower program, such as PYTHIA or HERWIG, which allows for including t-quark and Z0-boson decays at the leading order accuracy and generates shower emissions, hadronization and hadron decays.

Standard Model Higgs boson production in association with a top anti-top pair at NLO with parton showering

We present predictions for the production cross section of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a top-antitop pair at next-to-leading order accuracy using matrix elements obtained from the HELAC-Oneloop package. The NLO prediction was interfaced to the PYTHIA and HERWIG shower Monte Carlo programs with the help of POWHEG-Box, allowing for decays of massive particles, showering and hadronization, thus leading to final results at the hadron level.

Contributions from weak-interaction channels to inclusive hadron spectra at TeV energies

At the FERMILAB TEVATRON and CERN LHC accelerators partonic processes reach such a high energy region, where the weak interactions could enter into consideration in the hadron yields through the opening of resonant W and Z exchange diagrams. We investigate these contributions to inclusive charged hadron production in p+p and p+{\bar p} reactions at a few TeV energies, and compare our results to existing CDF and CMS data. We perform a leading order perturbative QCD calculation and include electroweak channels to estimate the order of magnitude of charged hadron excess. The energy dependence of hadron production and the fine structure of transverse momentum distributions are investigated. As expected, in p+ {\bar p} collisions electroweak channels yield much larger contribution, than in p+p collisions. However, these types of contributions remains close to be negligible at the available accelerator energies.

Analytic integration of real-virtual counterterms in NNLO jet cross sections II

We present analytic expressions of all integrals required to complete the explicit evaluation of the real-virtual integrated counterterms needed to define a recently proposed subtraction scheme for jet cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. We use the Mellin-Barnes representation of these integrals in $4-2ε$ dimensions to obtain the coefficients of their Laurent expansions around $ε=0$. These coefficients are given by linear combinations of multidimensional Mellin-Barnes integrals. We compute the coefficients of such expansions in $ε$ both numerically and analytically by complex integration over the Mellin-Barnes contours.

Three-jet event-shapes in lepton-proton scattering at next-to-leading order accuracy

We compute the differential distributions of two three-jet event-shape observables at the next-to-leading order accuracy at fixed values of the DIS kinematic variables. The observable $\Kout$ measures the out-of-event-plane momentum. The other observable $y_3$ is the maximum value of the $\ycut$ resolution variable for which an event is classified as three-jet event. We also show the dependence of the fixed-order predictions on the renormalisation and factorisation scales. The radiative corrections are in general large and depend on the value of the DIS kinematic range.

Multi-jet production in lepton-proton scattering at next-to-leading order accuracy

I summarize the theoretical and experimental status of multijet production in DIS. I present the state of the art theoretical predictions and compare those to the corresponding experimental results obtained by analysing the data collected by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA. I also show new predictions for three-jet event-shape distributions at the NLO accuracy.

Les Houches 'Physics at Tev Colliders 2003' QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum Chromodynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop `Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 26 May - 6 June 2003. After a Monte Guide description, the first contributions report on progress in describing multiple interactions, important for the LHC, and underlying events. An announcement of a Monte Carlo database, under construction, is then followed by a number of contributions improving parton shower descriptions. Subsequently, a large number of contributions address resummations in various forms, after which follow studies of QCD effects in pion pair, top quark pair and photon pair plus jet production. After a study of electroweak corrections to hadronic precision observables, the report ends by presenting recent progress in methods to compute finite order corrections at one-loop with many legs, and at two-loop.

The contribution of the four-parton final states to gamma* gamma* -> hadrons

In the analysis of the total cross section for the gamma* gamma* -> hadrons process, we include the four parton final states, which are part of the O(alpha_s^2) corrections. The four-parton final states contain the diagrams with gluon exchange in the crossed channel, which constitute the leading order of the BFKL resummation. We show that the diagrams with gluon exchange in the crossed channel play an important role in the large Y region, however their contribution to the cross section must be evaluated exactly. In fact, the high-energy limit, which constitutes the kinematic framework of the BFKL resummation, is not sufficiently accurate at LEP2 energies. The inclusion of the diagrams with gluon exchange in the crossed channel reduces the discrepancy between the theory and the LEP2 data collected by the L3 Collaboration, but the data still lie above the theory, even allowing for a large scale uncertainty in the theory. Thus, in order to describe accurately the data for gamma* gamma* -> hadrons in the large Y region, corrections of an order higher than O(alpha_s^2) seem to be necessary.

QCD radiative corrections to $γ^*γ^* \to$ hadrons at LEP2

In this talk we describe the order-$\as$ corrections to the total cross section and to jet rates in $γ^* γ^* \to$ hadrons for the process $\epem\to\epem +$ hadrons. We use a next-to-leading order general-purpose partonic Monte Carlo event generator that allows the computation of a rate differential in the produced leptons and hadrons. We compare our results with the experimental data for $\epem\to\epem +$ hadrons at LEP2.

QCD radiative corrections to $γ^*γ^* \to$ hadrons

We compute the order-$\as$ corrections to the total cross section and to jet rates for the process $\epem\to\epem +$ hadrons, where the hadrons are produced through crossed-channel quark exchange in the hard scattering of two off-shell photons originating from the incoming leptons. We use a next-to-leading order general-purpose partonic Monte Carlo event generator that allows the computation of a rate differential in the produced leptons and hadrons. We compare our results with the available experimental data for $\epem\to\epem +$ hadrons at LEP2.

Report of the QCD Working Group

The activities of the QCD working group concentrated on improving the understanding and Monte Carlo simulation of multi-jet final states due to hard QCD processes at LEP, i.e. quark-antiquark plus multi-gluon and/or secondary quark production, with particular emphasis on four-jet final states and b-quark mass effects. Specific topics covered are: relevant developments in the main event generators PYTHIA, HERWIG and ARIADNE; the new multi-jet generator APACIC++; description and tuning of inclusive (all-flavour) jet rates; quark mass effects in the three- and four-jet rates; mass, higher-order and hadronization effects in four-jet angular and shape distributions; b-quark fragmentation and gluon splitting into b-quarks.
