Improvement of heavy flavor productions in a multi-phase transport model updated with modern nPDFs

Recently we have updated a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model with modern parton distribution functions of nuclei (nPDFs). Here we study open charm production in the updated AMPT model and compare to the experimental data from $pp$ and $AA$ collisions over a wide range of collision energies. Besides the update of nPDFs, we have removed the transverse momentum cutoff on initial heavy quark productions and also included the resultant heavy flavor cross section into the total minijet cross section in the initial condition as described by the HIJING model. We show that the AMPT model with these updates provides a much better description of the yields and transverse momentum spectra of various open charm hadrons in comparison with the experimental data. This lays the foundation for further heavy flavor studies within the transport model approach.

Predictions for Cold Nuclear Matter Effects in $p+$Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 8.16$ TeV

Predictions for cold nuclear matter effects on charged hadrons, identified light hadrons, quarkonium and heavy flavor hadrons, Drell-Yan dileptons, jets, photons, gauge bosons and top quarks produced in $p+$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 8.16$ TeV are compiled and, where possible, compared to each other. Predictions of the normalized ratios of $p+$Pb to $p+p$ cross sections are also presented for most of the observables, providing new insights into the expected role of cold nuclear matter effects. In particular, the role of nuclear parton distribution functions on particle production can now be probed over a wider range of phase space than ever before.

Recent Developments of A Multi-Phase Transport Model

After the public release of A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model in 2004 and detailed descriptions of its physics in a 2005 paper, the model has been constantly updated and developed to make it more versatile and to include more physical processes. This an overview of recent developments of the AMPT model. Ongoing work to fix the violation of charge conservation in the code as well as possible directions for future work are also discussed.

Detection of Orbital Fluctuations Above the Structural Transition Temperature in the Iron-Pnictides and Chalcogenides

We use point contact spectroscopy to probe $\rm{AEFe_2As_2}$ ($\rm{AE=Ca, Sr, Ba}$) and $\rm{Fe_{1+y}Te}$. For $\rm{AE=Sr, Ba}$ we detect orbital fluctuations above $T_S$ while for AE=Ca these fluctuations start below $T_S$. Co doping preserves the orbital fluctuations while K doping suppresses it. The fluctuations are only seen at those dopings and temperatures where an in-plane resistive anisotropy is known to exist. We predict an in-plane resistive anisotropy of $\rm{Fe_{1+y}Te}$ above $T_S$. Our data are examined in light of the recent work by W.-C. Lee and P. Phillips (arXiv:1110.5917v2). We also study how joule heating in the PCS junctions impacts the spectra. Spectroscopic information is only obtained from those PCS junctions that are free of heating effects while those PCS junctions that are in the thermal regime display bulk resistivity phenomenon.

Gap-like feature in the normal state of $\bf{X(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2}$, $\bf{X=Ba,Sr}$ and $\bf{Fe_{1+y}Te}$ revealed by Point Contact Spectroscopy

Point contact spectroscopy reveals a gap-like feature above the magnetic and structural transition temperatures for underdoped $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2$, $SrFe_2As_2$ and $Fe_{1+y}Te$. The conductance spectrum starts showing an enhancement at temperatures as high as 177 K for $BaFe_2As_2$ ($T_N$ $\sim$ 132 K) and 250 K for $SrFe_2As_2$ ($T_N$ $\sim$ 192 K). Possible origins for this enhancement are discussed in light of recent experimental claims of nematicity in these materials. We construct a modified phase diagram for Co-doped Ba122 showing a gap-like feature existing above $T_N$ and $T_S$ for the underdoped regime.

Phase Separation and Chemical Inhomogeneity in the Iron Chalcogenide Superconductor Fe1+yTexSe1-x

We report investigation on Fe1+yTexSe1-x single crystals by using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Both nonsuperconducting samples with excess iron and superconducting samples demonstrate nanoscale phase separation and chemical inhomogeneity of Te/Se content, which we attribute to a miscibility gap. The line scan EELS technique indicates ~20% or less fluctuation of Te concentration from the nominal compositions.

Coupling of spin and orbital excitations in the iron-based superconductor FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5)

We present a combined analysis of neutron scattering and photoemission measurements on superconducting FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5). The low-energy magnetic excitations disperse only in the direction transverse to the characteristic wave vector (1/2,0,0), whereas the electronic Fermi surface near (1/2,0,0) appears to consist of four incommensurate pockets. While the spin resonance occurs at an incommensurate wave vector compatible with nesting, neither spin-wave nor Fermi-surface-nesting models can describe the magnetic dispersion. We propose that a coupling of spin and orbital correlations is key to explaining this behavior. If correct, it follows that these nematic fluctuations are involved in the resonance and could be relevant to the pairing mechanism.

Electronic correlations and unusual superconducting response in the optical properties of the iron-chalcogenide FeTe0.55Se0.45

The in-plane complex optical properties of the iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45 have been determined above and below the critical temperature Tc = 14 K. At room temperature the conductivity is described by a weakly-interacting Fermi liquid; however, below 100 K the scattering rate develops a frequency dependence in the terahertz region, signaling the increasingly correlated nature of this material. We estimate the dc conductivity just above Tc to be sigma_dc ~ 3500 Ohm-1cm-1 and the superfluid density rho_s0 ~ 9 x 10^6 cm-2, which places this material close to the scaling line rho_s0/8 ~ 8.1 sigma_dc Tc for a BCS dirty-limit superconductor. Below Tc the optical conductivity reveals two gap features at Delta_1,2 ~ 2.5 and ~ 5.1 meV.

Strong Coupling Superconductivity in Iron-Chalcogenide FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$

The superconducting order parameter in the iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$ ($T_\textrm{c}$ = 14.2 K) is investigated by point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The energy gap magnitude (3.8 meV at 1.70 K) and temperature dependence as extracted from the Andreev conductance spectra reveal strong-coupling superconductivity and is consistent with $s$-wave order parameter symmetry. No clear evidence for multiple order parameters or interference from multiple bands is observed. A conductance enhancement persists above $T_\textrm{c}$ to $\sim 18-20$ K and possible origins, including novel quasiparticle scattering due to strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, are discussed.

Investigation of the spin-glass regime between the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases in Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_x$Te$_{1-x}$

Using bulk magnetization along with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, we have investigated the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ and the nature of magnetic correlations in three nonsuperconducting samples of Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.9}$, Fe$_{1.01}$Se$_{0.15}$Te$_{0.85}$ and Fe$_{1.02}$Se$_{0.3}$Te$_{0.7}$. A cusp and hysteresis in the temperature dependence of the magnetization for the $x=0.15$ and 0.3 samples indicates spin-glass (SG) ordering below $T_{\rm sg} = 23$K. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that the spin-glass behavior is associated with short-range spin density wave (SDW) ordering characterized by a static component and a low-energy dynamic component with a characteristic incommensurate wave vector of ${\bf Q}_m = (0.46, 0, 0.50)$ and an anisotropy gap of $\sim$ 2.5 meV. Our high ${\bf Q}$-resolution data also show that the systems undergo a glassy structural distortion that coincides with the short-range SDW order.

Partonic Effects in Heavy Ion Collisions at RHIC

Effects of partonic interactions in heavy ion collisions at RHIC are studied in a multiphase transport model (AMPT) that includes both initial partonic and final hadronic interactions. It is found that a large parton scattering cross section is needed to understand the measured elliptic flow of pions and two-pion correlation function.

Charmonium absorption cross section by nucleon

The $J/ψ$ absorption cross section by nucleon is studied using a gauged SU(4) hadronic Lagrangian but with empirical particle masses, which has been used previously to study the $J/ψ$ absorption cross section by pion and rho meson. Including both two-body and three-body final states, we find that with a cutoff parameter of 1 GeV at interaction vertices involving charm hadrons, the $J/ψ-N$ absorption is at most 5 mb and is consistent with that extracted from $J/ψ$ production from both photo-nuclear and proton-nucleus reactions.
