Sudden polarization angle jumps of the repeating fast radio burst FRB 20201124A

We report the first detection of polarization angle (PA) orthogonal jumps, a phenomenon previously only observed from radio pulsars, from a fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20201124A. We find three cases of orthogonal jumps in over two thousand bursts, all resembling those observed in pulsar single pulses. We propose that the jumps are due to the superposition of two orthogonal emission modes that could only be produced in a highly magnetized plasma, and they are caused by the line of sight sweeping across a rotating magnetosphere. The shortest jump timescale is of the order of one-millisecond, which hints that the emission modes come from regions smaller than the light cylinder of most pulsars or magnetars. This discovery provides convincing evidence that FRB emission originates from the complex magnetosphere of a magnetar, suggesting an FRB emission mechanism that is analogous to radio pulsars despite a huge luminosity difference between two types of objects.

Variability, polarimetry, and timing properties of single pulses from PSR J2222-0137 using FAST

In our work, we analyse $5\times10^{4}$ single pulses from the recycled pulsar PSR J2222$-$0137 in one of its scintillation maxima observed by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). PSR J2222$-$0137 is one of the nearest and best studies of binary pulsars and a unique laboratory for testing gravitational theories. We report single pulses' energy distribution and polarization from the pulsar's main-pulse region. The single pulse energy follows the log-normal distribution. We resolve a steep polarization swing, but at the current time resolution ($64\,μ{\rm s}$), we find no evidence for the orthogonal jump in the main-pulse region, as has been suspected. We find a potential sub-pulse drifting period of $P_{3} \sim 3.5\,P$. We analyse the jitter noise from different integrated numbers of pulses and find that its $σ_{j}$ is $270\pm{9}\,{\rm ns}$ for 1-hr integration at 1.25 GHz. This result is useful for optimizing future timing campaigns with FAST or other radio telescopes.

Precise determination of the 2s22p5-2s2p6 transition energy in fluorine-like nickel utilizing a low-lying dielectronic resonance

High precision spectroscopy of the low-lying dielectronic resonances in fluorine-like nickel ions were determined by employing the merged electron-ion beam at the heavy-ion storage ring CSRm. The measured dielectronic resonances are identified by comparing with the most recent relativistic calculation utilizing the FAC code. The first resonance at about 86 meV due to the dielectronic recombination via (2s2p6[2S1/2]6s)J=1 intermediate state was recognized. The experimental determination of the resonance position at 86 meV reaches an uncertainty of 4 meV, which allows precise determination of the 2s22p5[2P3/2] - 2s2p6[2S1/2] transition energy. The Rydberg binding energy of the 6s electron in the (2s2p6[2S1/2]6s)J=1 state is calculated by the multi-configurational Dirac-HartreeFock and stabilization methods. The determined transition energies are 149.056(4)exp(10)theo and 149.032(4)exp(6)theo, respectively. Moreover, the transition energy has also been calculated by fully relativistic and ab initio approaches. Individual theoretical contributions are evaluated by employing the core-Hartree and Kohn-Sham screening potentials, respectively. High-order QED and correlation effects contribute prominently to the total transition energy. The present DR precision spectroscopy study at the CSRm paves the way for future precision measurements of atomic energy levels with heavier highly charged ions.

Tune-out wavelengths of the hyperfine components of the ground level of $^{133}$Cs atoms

The static and dynamic electric-dipole polarizabilities and tune-out wavelengths for the ground state of Cs atoms are calculated by using a semiempirical relativistic configuration interaction plus core polarization approach. By considering the hyperfine splittings, the static and dynamic polarizabilities, hyperfine Stark shifts, and tune-out wavelengths of the hyperfine components of the ground level of $^{133}$Cs atoms are determined. It is found that the hyperfine shifts of the first primary tune-out wavelengths are about $-$0.0135 nm and 0.0106 nm, which are very close to the hyperfine interaction energies. Additionally, the contribution of the tensor polarizability to the tune-out wavelengths is determined to be about $10^{-5} \sim 10^{-6}$ nm.

Angle-dependent magic wavelengths for the $4s_{1/2}\to3d_{5/2,3/2}$ transitions of Ca$^{+}$ ions

The dynamic polarizabilities of the atomic states with angular momentum $j> \frac12$ are sensitive to the angle between the quantization axis $\hat{e}_z$ and the polarization vector $\hat{\mathbfε}$ owing to the contribution of anisotropic tensor polarizabilities. The magic wavelength, at which the differential Stark shift of an atomic transition nullifies, depends on this angle. We identified the magic wavelengths for the $4s_{\frac12}\to3d_{\frac32,\frac52}$ transitions of Ca$^{+}$ ions at different angles between $\hat{e}_z$ and $\hat{\mathbfε}$ in the case of linearly polarized light. We found that the magic wavelengths near 395.79 nm, which lie between the $4s_{\frac12}\to4p_{\frac12}$ and $4s_{\frac12}\to 4p_{\frac32}$ transition wavelengths, remain unsensitive to the angle, while the magic wavelengths, which are longer than the $3d_{\frac52}\to 4p_{\frac32}$ resonant transition wavelength (854.21 nm), are very sensitive to the angle.

Local connectivity modulates multi-scale relaxation dynamics in a metallic glass-forming system

The structural description for the intriguing link between the fast vibrational dynamics and slow diffusive dynamics in glass-forming systems is one of the most challenging issues in physical science. Here, in a model of metallic supercooled liquid, we find that local connectivity as an atomic-level structural order parameter tunes the short-time vibrational excitations of the icosahedrally coordinated particles and meanwhile modulates their long-time relaxation dynamics changing from stretched to compressed exponentials, denoting a dynamic transition from subdiffusive to hyperdiffusive motions of such particles. Our result indicates that long-time dynamics has an atomic-level structural origin which is related to the short-time dynamics, thus suggests a structural bridge to link the fast vibrational dynamics and the slow structural relaxation in glassy materials.

Angle-resolved x-ray spectroscopic scheme to determine overlapping hyperfine splittings in highly charged helium-like ions

An angle-resolved x-ray spectroscopic scheme is presented for determining the hyperfine splitting of highly charged ions. For helium-like ions, in particular, we propose to measure either the angular distribution or polarization of the $1s2p~^{3}P_{1}, F \rightarrow 1s^{2}~^{1}S_{0}, F_{f}$ emission following the stimulated decay of the initial $1s2s~^{1}S_{0}, F_{i}$ level. It is found that both the angular and polarization characteristics of the emitted x-ray photons strongly depends on the (relative) \textit{splitting} of the partially overlapping hyperfine $1s2p~^{3}P_{1}, F$ resonances and may thus help resolve their hyperfine structure. The proposed scheme is feasible with present-day photon detectors and allows a measurement of the hyperfine splitting of helium-like ions with a relative accuracy of about $10^{-4}$.

Critical scaling of icosahedral medium-range order in CuZr metallic glass-forming liquids

The temperature evolution of icosahedral medium-range order formed by interpenetrating icosahedra in CuZr metallic glass-forming liquids was investigated via molecular dynamics simulations. Scaling analysis based on percolation theory was employed, and it is found that the size distribution of clusters formed by the central atoms of icosahedra at various temperatures follows a very good scaling law with the cluster number density scaled by $S^{-τ}$ and the cluster size $S$ scaled by $|1-T_c/T|^{-1/σ}$, respectively. Here $T_c$ is scaling crossover-temperature. $τ$ and $σ$ are scaling exponents. The critical scaling behaviour suggests that there would be a structural phase transition manifested by percolation of locally favoured structures underlying the glass transition, if the liquid could be cooled slowly enough but without crystallization intervening. Furthermore, it is revealed that when icosahedral short-range order (ISRO) extends to medium-range length scale by connection, the atomic configurations of ISROs will be optimized from distorted ones towards more regular ones gradually, which significantly lowers the energies of ISROs and introduces geometric frustration simultaneously. Both factors make key impacts on the drastic dynamic slowdown of supercooled liquids. Our findings provide direct structure-property relationship for understanding the nature of glass transition.

Level sequence and splitting identification of closely-spaced energy levels by angle-resolved analysis of the fluorescence light

The angular distribution and linear polarization of the fluorescence light following the resonant photoexcitation is investigated within the framework of the density matrix and second-order perturbation theory. Emphasis has been placed on "signatures" for determining the level sequence and splitting of intermediate (partially) overlapping resonances, if analyzed as a function of the photon energy of the incident light. Detailed computations within the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method have been performed especially for the $1s^{2}2s^{2}2p^{6}3s\;\, J_{i}=1/2 \,+\, γ_{1} \:\rightarrow\: (1s^{2}2s2p^{6}3s)_{1}3p_{3/2}\;\, J=1/2, \, 3/2 \:\rightarrow\: 1s^{2}2s^{2}2p^{6}3s\;\, J_{f}=1/2 \,+\, γ_{2}$ photoexcitation and subsequent fluorescence emission of atomic sodium. A remarkably strong dependence of the angular distribution and linear polarization of the $γ_{2}$ fluorescence emission is found upon the level sequence and splitting of the intermediate $(1s^{2}2s2p^{6}3s)_{1}3p_{3/2}\;\, J=1/2, \, 3/2$ overlapping resonances owing to their finite lifetime (linewidth). We therefore suggest that accurate measurements of the angular distribution and linear polarization might help identify the sequence and small splittings of closely-spaced energy levels, even if they can not be spectroscopically resolved.
