Direct observation of the Dirac nodes lifting in semimetallic perovskite SrIrO3 thin films

Perovskite SrIrO3 has long been proposed as an exotic semimetal induced by the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations. However, its low-lying electronic structure is still lacking. We synthesize high-quality perovskite SrIrO3 (100) films by means of oxide molecular beam epitaxy, and then systemically investigate their low energy electronic structure using in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that the hole-like bands around R and the electron-like bands around U(T) intersect the Fermi level simultaneously, providing the direct evidence of the semimetallic ground state in this compound. Comparing with the density functional theory, we discover that the bandwidth of states near Fermi level is extremely small, and there exists a pronounced mixing between the Jeff = 1/2 and Jeff = 3/2 states. Moreover, our data reveal that the predicted Dirac degeneracy protected by the mirror-symmetry, which was theoretically suggested to be the key to realize the non-trivial topological properties, is actually lifted in perovskite SrIrO3 thin films. Our findings pose strong constraints on the current theoretical models for the 5d iridates.

Observation of the anisotropic Dirac cone in the band dispersion of 112-structured iron-based superconductor Ca0.9La0.1FeAs2

CaFeAs2 is a parent compound of recently discovered 112-type iron-based superconductors. It is predicted to be a staggered intercalation compound that naturally integrates both quantum spin Hall insulating and superconducting layers and an ideal system for the realization of Majorana modes. We performed a systematical angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principle calculation study of the slightly electron-doped CaFeAs2. We found that the zigzag As chain of 112-type iron-based superconductors play a considerable role in the low-energy electronic structure, resulting in the characteristic Dirac-cone like band dispersion as the prediction. Our experimental results further confirm that these Dirac cones only exists around the X but not Y points in the Brillouin zone, breaking the S4 symmetry at iron sites. Our findings present the compelling support to the theoretical prediction that the 112-type iron-based superconductors might host the topological nontrivial edge states. The slightly electron doped CaFeAs2 would provide us a unique opportunity to realize and explore Majorana fermion physics.

Measurement of $K^{+}$ production in charged-current $ν_μ$ interactions

Production of K^{+} mesons in charged-current ν_μ interactions on plastic scintillator (CH) is measured using MINERvA exposed to the low-energy NuMI beam at Fermilab. Timing information is used to isolate a sample of 885 charged-current events containing a stopping K^{+} which decays at rest. The differential cross section in K^{+} kinetic energy, dσ/dT_{K}, is observed to be relatively flat between 0 and 500 MeV. Its shape is in good agreement with the prediction by the \textsc{genie} neutrino event generator when final-state interactions are included, however the data rate is lower than the prediction by 15\%.

Momentum-Resolved Electronic Structure of the High-$T_{c}$ Superconductor Parent Compound BaBiO$_{3}$

We investigate the band structure of BaBiO$_{3}$, an insulating parent compound of doped high-$T_{c}$ superconductors, using \emph{in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on thin films. The data compare favorably overall with density functional theory calculations within the local density approximation, demonstrating that electron correlations are weak. The bands exhibit Brillouin zone folding consistent with known BiO$_{6}$ breathing distortions. Though the distortions are often thought to coincide with Bi$^{3+}$/Bi$^{5+}$ charge ordering, core level spectra show that bismuth is monovalent. We further demonstrate that the bands closest to the Fermi level are primarily oxygen derived, while the bismuth $6s$ states mostly contribute to dispersive bands at deeper binding energy. The results support a model of Bi-O charge transfer in which hole pairs are localized on combinations of the O $2p$ orbitals.

First evidence of coherent $K^{+}$ meson production in neutrino-nucleus scattering

Neutrino-induced charged-current coherent kaon production, $ν_μA\rightarrowμ^{-}K^{+}A$, is a rare, inelastic electroweak process that brings a $K^+$ on shell and leaves the target nucleus intact in its ground state. This process is significantly lower in rate than neutrino-induced charged-current coherent pion production, because of Cabibbo suppression and a kinematic suppression due to the larger kaon mass. We search for such events in the scintillator tracker of MINERvA by observing the final state $K^+$, $μ^-$ and no other detector activity, and by using the kinematics of the final state particles to reconstruct the small momentum transfer to the nucleus, which is a model-independent characteristic of coherent scattering. We find the first experimental evidence for the process at $3σ$ significance.

Fermiology of possible topological superconductor Tl0.5Bi2Te3 derived from hole-doped topological insulator

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Tl0.5Bi2Te3, a possible topological superconductor derived from Bi2Te3. We found that the bulk Fermi surface consists of multiple three-dimensional hole pockets surrounding the Z point, produced by the direct hole doping into the valence band. The Dirac-cone surface state is well isolated from the bulk bands, and the surface chemical potential is variable in the entire band-gap range. Tl0.5Bi2Te3 thus provides an excellent platform to realize two-dimensional topological superconductivity through a proximity effect from the superconducting bulk. Also, the observed Fermi-surface topology provides a concrete basis for constructing theoretical models for bulk topological superconductivity in hole-doped topological insulators.

Unexpected Dirac-Node Arc in the Topological Line-Node Semimetal HfSiS

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on HfSiS, which has been predicted to be a topological line-node semimetal with square Si lattice. We found a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface hosting bulk nodal lines, alongside the surface states at the Brillouin-zone corner exhibiting a sizable Rashba splitting and band-mass renormalization due to many-body interactions. Most notably, we discovered an unexpected Dirac-like dispersion extending one-dimensionally in k space - the Dirac-node arc - near the bulk node at the zone diagonal. These novel Dirac states reside on the surface and could be related to hybridizations of bulk states, but currently we have no explanation for its origin. This discovery poses an intriguing challenge to the theoretical understanding of topological line-node semimetals.

Bilinear forms on Green rings of finite dimensional Hopf algebras

In this paper, we study the Green ring and the stable Green ring of a Hopf algebra $H$ by means of bilinear forms. We show that the Green ring of a Hopf algebra of finite representation type is a Frobenius algebra over $\mathbb{Z}$ with a dual basis associated to almost split sequences. On the stable Green ring we define a new bilinear form which is more accurate to determine the bi-Frobenius property of the stable Green ring. We show that the complexified stable Green ring (or algebra) is a group-like algebra, and hence a bi-Frobenius algebra, if the bilinear form on the stable Green ring is non-degenerate.

Assortativity and leadership emergence from anti-preferential attachment in heterogeneous networks

Many real-world networks exhibit degree-assortativity, with nodes of similar degree more likely to link to one another. Particularly in social networks, the contribution to the total assortativity varies with degree, featuring a distinctive peak slightly past the average degree. The way traditional models imprint assortativity on top of pre-defined topologies is via degree-preserving link permutations, which however destroy the particular graph's hierarchical traits of clustering. Here, we propose the first generative model which creates heterogeneous networks with scale-free-like properties and tunable realistic assortativity. In our approach, two distinct populations of nodes are added to an initial network seed: one (the followers) that abides by usual preferential rules, and one (the potential leaders) connecting via anti-preferential attachments, i.e. selecting lower degree nodes for their initial links. The latter nodes come to develop a higher average degree, and convert eventually into the final hubs. Examining the evolution of links in Facebook, we present empirical validation for the connection between the initial anti-preferential attachment and long term high degree. Thus, our work sheds new light on the structure and evolution of social networks.

Tailoring the nature and strength of electron-phonon interactions in the SrTiO$_3$(001) two-dimensional electron liquid

Surfaces and interfaces offer new possibilities for tailoring the many-body interactions that dominate the electrical and thermal properties of transition metal oxides. Here, we use the prototypical two-dimensional electron liquid (2DEL) at the SrTiO$_3$(001) surface to reveal a remarkably complex evolution of electron-phonon coupling with the tunable carrier density of this system. At low density, where superconductivity is found in the analogous 2DEL at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface, our angle-resolved photoemission data show replica bands separated by 100\,meV from the main bands. This is a hallmark of a coherent polaronic liquid and implies strong long-range coupling to a single longitudinal optical phonon mode. In the overdoped regime the preferential coupling to this mode decreases and the 2DEL undergoes a crossover to a more conventional metallic state with weaker short-range electron-phonon interaction. These results place constraints on the theoretical description of superconductivity and allow for a unified understanding of the transport properties in SrTiO$_3$-based 2DELs.

Transition from reconstruction towards thin film on the (110) surface of strontium titanate

The surfaces of metal oxides often are reconstructed with a geometry and composition that is considerably different from a simple termination of the bulk. Such structures can also be viewed as ultrathin films, epitaxed on a substrate. Here, the reconstructions of the SrTiO3 (110) surface are studied combining scanning tunneling microscopy, transmission electron diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and analyzed with density functional theory calculations. While SrTiO3 (110) invariably terminates with an overlayer of titania, with increasing density its structure switches from nx1 and 2xn. At the same time the coordination of the Ti atoms changes from a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra to a double layer of edge-shared octahedra with bridging units of octahedrally coordinated strontium. This transition from the nx1 to 2xn reconstructions is a transition from a pseudomorphically stabilized tetrahedral network towards an octahedral titania thin film with stress-relief from octahedral strontia units at the surface.

GaAs/AlGaAs Nanowire Photodetector

We demonstrate an efficient core-shell GaAs/AlGaAs nanowire photodetector operating at room temperature. The design of this nanoscale detector is based on a type-I heterostructure combined with a metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) radial architecture, in which built-in electric fields at the semiconductor heterointerface and at the metal/semiconductor Schottky contact promote photogenerated charge separation, enhancing photosensitivity. The spectral photoconductive response shows that the nanowire supports resonant optical modes in the near-infrared region, which lead to large photocurrent density in agreement with the predictions of electromagnetic and transport computational models. The single nanowire photodetector shows remarkable peak photoresponsivity of 0.57 A/W, comparable to large-area planar GaAs photodetectors on the market, and a high detectivity of 7.2 10^10 cm\sqrt{Hz}/W at λ=855 nm. This is promising for the design of a new generation of highly sensitive single nanowire photodetectors by controlling optical mode confinement, bandgap, density of states, and electrode engineering.

Imaging the inside of thick structures using cosmic rays

The authors present here a new method to image reinforcement elements inside thick structures and the results of a demonstration measurement performed on a mock-up wall built at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The method, referred to as "multiple scattering muon radiography", relies on the use of cosmic-ray muons as probes. The work described in this article was performed to prove the viability of the technique as a means to image the interior of the dome of Florence Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore, one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites and among the highest profile buildings in existence. Its result shows the effectiveness of the technique as a tool to radiograph thick structures and image denser object inside them.

Optical I-band Linear Polarimetry of the Magnetar 4U 0142+61 with Subaru

The magnetar 4U~0142+61 has been well studied at optical and infrared wavelengths and is known to have a complicated broad-band spectrum over the wavelength range. Here we report the result from our linear imaging polarimetry of the magnetar at optical $I$-band. From the polarimetric observation carried out with the 8.2-m Subaru telescope, we determine the degree of linear polarization $P=1.0\pm$3.4\%, or $P\leq$5.6\% (90\% confidence level). Considering models suggested for optical emission from magnetars, we discuss the implications of our result. The upper limit measurement indicates that different from radio pulsars, magnetars probably would not have strongly polarized optical emission if the emission arises from their magnetosphere as suggested.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Lattice QCD: isospin-2 $ππ$ scattering length

We present results for the $I=2$ $ππ$ scattering length using $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass lattice QCD for three values of the lattice spacing and a range of pion mass values. Due to the use of Laplacian Heaviside smearing our statistical errors are reduced compared to previous lattice studies. A detailed investigation of systematic effects such as discretisation effects, volume effects, and pollution of excited and thermal states is performed. After extrapolation to the physical point using chiral perturbation theory at NLO we obtain $M_πa_0=-0.0442(2)_\mathrm{stat}(^{+4}_{-0})_\mathrm{sys}$.

Spin-Fluctuation-Induced Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior with suppressed superconductivity in LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As

A series of LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As compounds with different Co concentrations have been studied by transport, optical spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. We observed a Fermi liquid to non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid (FL-NFL-FL) crossover alongside a monotonic suppression of the superconductivity with increasing Co content. In parallel to the FL-NFL-FL crossover, we found that both the low-energy spin fluctuations and Fermi surface nesting are enhanced and then diminished, strongly suggesting that the NFL behavior in LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As is induced by low-energy spin fluctuations which are very likely tuned by Fermi surface nesting. Our study reveals a unique phase diagram of LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As where the region of NFL is moved to the boundary of the superconducting phase, implying that they are probably governed by different mechanisms.
