Looking for CP violation in B -> tau+tau- decays

In supersymmetry with large tan(beta) the decays B0(B0bar) -> l+l- are dominated by the scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs penguin diagrams leading to strong enhancement of leptonic decay rates with potentially large CP asymmetries in the tau+tau- decay modes measurable in BELLE or BaBar experiments. The TAUOLA tau-lepton decay library supplemented by its universal interface can efficiently be used to search for B0(B0bar) -> tau+tau- decays, and to investigate how the CP asymmetry is reflected in realistic experimental observables.

TAUOLA as tau Monte Carlo for future applications

The status of the Monte Carlo programs for the simulation of tau-lepton production and decay in high-energy accelerator experiments is reviewed. In particular, the status of the following packages is discussed: (i) TAUOLA for tau-lepton decay, (ii) PHOTOS for radiative corrections in decays, (iii) MC-TESTER packages for various types of semi-automatic tests, and (iv) universal interface of TAUOLA for the decay of tau leptons produced by `any' generator. Emphasis is put on recent developments for high-precision tests and extensions of PHOTOS. Some considerations for the software organization necessary in future applications for Belle and BaBar will be given; examples of TAUOLA universal interface use will only be listed at the end of the review.

New Results on Precision Studies of Heavy Vector Boson Physics

We present new results for two important heavy vector boson physics processes: (1), virtual corrections to hard bremsstrahlung which are relevant to precision predictions for the radiative return process in Z boson production at and beyond LEP2 energies ; and, (2), electric charge screening effects in single W production with finite p_T, multiple photon radiation in high energy collider physics processes. In both cases we show that we improve the respective precision tag significantly. Phenomenological implications are discussed.

Gauge invariance, infrared/collinear singularities and tree level matrix element for e+ e- to nu_e bar nu_e gamma gamma

One of the necessary steps in constructing high precision option of KKMC was to install the double bremsstrahlung matrix element for the process e+ e- to nu_e bar nu_e into the scheme of Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation. The process is also interesting because of gauge cancellation of contributions for photon emission from incoming fermion lines and t-channel W. The QED U(1) gauge properties require terms of the triple and quatric gauge couplings to be taken into considerations as well. Thanks to expansion starting from the approximation of contact interaction, good example to study the internal structure of the amplitude is available. In the developed scheme, natural separation of the complete amplitude into gauge invariant parts is straightforward. Each part has well defined physical interpretation, which after partial integration over phase space provides terms: infrared singular, leading log, next-to-leading-log, etc. Contributions related to triple and quatric gauge coupling of W (extracted with the help of expansion around contact W-interaction), have been ordered as well. The separation is also helpful, to define extrapolation/reduction procedure of CEEX exponentiation for the nu_e channel.

Les Houches Guidebook to Monte Carlo Generators for Hadron Collider Physics

Recently the collider physics community has seen significant advances in the formalisms and implementations of event generators. This review is a primer of the methods commonly used for the simulation of high energy physics events at particle colliders. We provide brief descriptions, references, and links to the specific computer codes which implement the methods. The aim is to provide an overview of the available tools, allowing the reader to ascertain which tool is best for a particular application, but also making clear the limitations of each tool.

Why do we need higher order fully exclusive Monte Carlo generator for Higgs boson production from heavy quark fusion at LHC?

In this paper we argue that having available higher order fully exclusive Monte Carlo generator for Higgs boson production from heavy quark fusion will be mandatory for data analysis at LHC. The H to tau tau channel, a key for early discovery of the Higgs boson in the MSSM scenario, is discussed. With simplified example and for mH = 120 GeV we show, that depending on choice among presently available approaches, used for simulation of Higgs boson production from b bbar H Yukawa coupling, final acceptance for the signal events being reconstructed inside mass window may differ by a factor of 3. The spread is even larger (up to a factor of 10) for other production mechanisms (promising for some regions of the MSSM parameter space). The complete analysis, which necessarily will add stringent requirements for background rejection (such as identification of b-jet or veto on b-jet) and which will require statistical combination of samples selected with different selection criteria may only enhance the uncertainty.

Observables with tau leptons at LHC and LC structure of event records and Monte Carlo Algorithms

In the present report, let us adress the issues related to simulation of decays for particle embodied in full production and decay chains of Monte Carlo programs set-up for experiments such as at LHC or LC. Both technical issues related to the way how the events may be stored in event records and issues related to physics (in particular non-factorizable correlations of the Einstein-Rosen-Podolsky type) will be reviewed on the basis of practical examples. We will limit our discussion to the case of tau lepton and W boson decays, but similar problems (and solutions) may arise also in case of simulation for other intermediate states or particles. Examples related to construction of physics observables will be also given. In particular the method of measuring the CP parity properties of the h-tau-tau coupling at LC will be explained.

MC-TESTER: a universal tool for comparisons of Monte Carlo predictions for particle decays in high energy physics

Theoretical predictions in high energy physics are routinely provided in the form of Monte Carlo generators. Comparisons of predictions from different programs and/or different initialization set-ups are often necessary. MC-TESTER can be used for such tests of decays of intermediate states (particles or resonances) in a semi-automated way. Our test consists of two steps. Different Monte Carlo programs are run; events with decays of a chosen particle are searched, decay trees are analysed and appropriate information is stored. Then, at the analysis step, a list of all found decay modes is defined and branching ratios are calculated for both runs. Histograms of all scalar Lorentz-invariant masses constructed from the decay products are plotted and compared for each decay mode found in both runs. For each plot a measure of the difference of the distributions is calculated and its maximal value over all histograms for each decay channel is printed in a summary table. As an example of MC-TESTER application, we include a test with the tau lepton decay Monte Carlo generators, TAUOLA and PYTHIA. The HEPEVT (or LUJETS) common block is used as exclusive source of information on the generated events.

Transverse spin effects in H/A -> tau^+ tau^- ; tau^{+-} -> nu X^{+-}, Monte Carlo approach

The transverse spin effects may be helpful to distinguish between scalar (J^{PC}=0^{++}) or pseudoscalar (J^{PC}=0^{-+}) nature of the spin zero (Higgs) particle once discovered in future accelerator experiments. The correlations can manifest themselves e.g. in distribution of acollinearity angle of X^{+-} in decay chain H/A -> tau^+ tau^- ; tau^{+-} -> nu X^{+-}. This delicate measurement will require however reconstruction of the Higgs boson rest-frame. Then, questions of the combined detector-theoretical effects may be critical to establish reliability of the method. Appropriate Monte Carlo program is essential. In the present paper we extend the standard universal interface, of the TAUOLA tau-lepton decay library, to include the complete spin effects for tau leptons originating from the spin zero particle. As usual, the interface is expected to work with any Monte Carlo generator providing Higgs boson production, and subsequent decay into pair of tau leptons. Some example of numerical results and cross checks of the program, will be also given.

Probing the CP nature of the Higgs boson at linear colliders with tau spin correlations; the case of mixed scalar--pseudoscalar couplings

The prospects for the measurement of the pseudoscalar admixture in the h-tau-tau coupling to a Standard Model Higgs boson of 120 GeV mass are discussed in a quantitative manner e+ e- collisions of 350 GeV centre-of-mass energy. Specific angular distributions in the h --> tau tau; tau --> rho nu decay chain can be used to probe mixing angles of scalar--pseudoscalar h-tau-tau couplings. In the discussion of the feasibility of the method, assumptions on the properties of a future detector for an e+ e- linear collider such as TESLA are used. The Standard Model Higgsstrahlung production process is taken as an example. For the expected performance of a typical Linear Collider set-up, the sensitivity of a measurement of the scalar--pseudoscalar mixing angle turned out to be 6 degree. It will be straightforward to apply our results to estimate the sensitivity of a measurement, in cases another scenario of the Higgs boson sector (Standard Model or not) is chosen by nature. The experimental error of the method is expected to be limited by the statistics.

The tauola-photos-F environment for the TAUOLA and PHOTOS packages, release II

We present the system for versioning two packages: the TAUOLA of tau-lepton decay and PHOTOS for radiative corrections in decays. The following features can be chosen in an automatic or semi-automatic way: (1) format of the common block HEPEVT; (2) version of the physics input (for TAUOLA): as published, as initialized by the CLEO collaboration, as initialized by the ALEPH collaboration (it is suggested to use this version only with the help of the collaboration advice), new optional parametrizations of matrix elements in 4-pi decay channels; (3) type of application: stand-alone, universal interface based on the information stored in the HEPEVT common block including longitudinal spin effects in the elementary Z/gamma* -> tau+ tau- process, extended version of the standard universal interface including full spin effects in the H/A -> tau+ tau- decay, interface for KKMC Monte Carlo, (4) random number generators; (5) compiler options.

How to use SANC to improve the PHOTOS Monte Carlo simulation of bremsstrahlung in leptonic W-Boson decays

Using the SANC system we study the one-loop electroweak standard model predictions, including virtual and real photon emission, for the decays of the on-shell vector boson, W --> L ANTI-NU (GAMMA). The complete one-loop corrections and exact photon emission matrix element are taken into account. For the phase-space integration, the Monte Carlo technique is used. This provides a useful element, first for the evaluation of the theoretical uncertainty of PHOTOS. Later we analyse the source of the differences between SANC and PHOTOS and we calculate the additional weight, which once installed, improves predictions of PHOTOS simulations. We can conclude that, after the correction of the weight is implemented, the theoretical uncertainty of PHOTOS simulations due to an incomplete first-order matrix element is reduced to below alpha/pi, for observables not tagging the photon in a direct way, and to 10% otherwise. This is interesting for applications in the phenomenology of the ongoing LEP2 and future LC and LHC experimental studies.

Measuring the Higgs boson parity at a Linear Collider using the tau impact parameter and tau --> rho nu decay

We demonstrate that a measurement of the impact parameter in one-prong tau decay can be useful for the determination of the Higgs boson parity in the H/A --> tau tau; tau --> rho nu decay chain. We have estimated that for a detection set-up such as TESLA, use of the information from the tau impact parameter can improve the significance of the measurement of the parity of the Standard Model 120 GeV Higgs boson to 4.5 sigma, and in general by factor of about 1.5 with respect to the method where this information is not used. We also show that the variation in the assumption on the precision of the measurement of the impact parameter and/or pi's momenta does not affect the sensitivity of the method. This is because the method remains limited by the type of twofold ambiguity in reconstructing the tau momentum.

Comparison of SANC with KORALZ and PHOTOS

Using the SANC system we study the one-loop electroweak standard model prediction, including virtual and real photon emissions, for the decays of on-shell vector and scalar bosons B --> f anti-f (gamma), where B is a vector boson, Z or W, or a Standard Model Higgs. The complete one-loop corrections and exact photon emission matrix element are taken into account. For the phase-space integration, the Monte Carlo technique is used. For Z decay the QED part of the calculation is first cross-checked with the exact one-loop QED prediction of KORALZ. For Higgs boson and W decays, a comparison is made with the approximate QED calculation of PHOTOS Monte Carlo. This provides a useful element for the evaluation of the theoretical uncertainty of PHOTOS, very interesting for its application in ongoing LEP2 and future LC and LHC phenomenology.

Precision W-pair physics with the YFSWW3 and KoralW Monte Carlos

We present the recent developments in the precision studies of W-pair and single-W processes in e+e- collisions achieved with the help of the KoralW and YFSWW3 Monte Carlo generators. We focus on the theoretical precision of the measurements of M_W and anomalous couplings on the example of lambda coupling. We present the mechanism of running these two independent codes in the form of one Concurrent Monte Carlo code. We describe also the extensions of KoralW necessary to emulate the kinematical region of single-W process.

Electric Charge Screening Effect in Single-W Production with the KoralW Monte Carlo

Any Monte Carlo event generator in which only initial state radiation (ISR) is implemented, or ISR is simulated independently of the final state radiation (FSR), may feature too many photons with large transverse momenta, which deform the topology of events and result in too strong an overall energy loss due to ISR. This overproduction of ISR photons happens in the presence of the final state particle close to the beam particle of the same electric charge. It is often said that the lack of the electric charge screening effect between ISR and FSR is responsible for the above pathology in ISR. We present an elegant approximate method of curing the above problem, without actually reinstalling FSR. The method provides theoretical predictions of modest precision: < 2%. It is, however, sufficient for the current 1W data analysis at the LEP2 collider. Contrary to alternative methods implemented in other MC programs, our method works for the ISR multiphotons with finite p_T. Although this method is not an exact implementation of the complete/exact ISR, FSR and their interference, it is very closely modelled on it. We present a variety of numerical results obtained with the newest version of the KoralW Monte Carlo, in which this method is already implemented.
