Structural Parameters of Mayall II = G1 in M31

Mayall II = G1 is one of the most luminous globular clusters (GCs) known in M31. New deep, high-resolution observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} are used to provide accurate photometric data to the smallest radii yet. In particular, we present the precise variation of ellipticity and position angle, and of surface brightness for the core of the object. Based on these accurate photometric data, we redetermine the structural parameters of G1 by fitting a single-mass isotropic King model. We derive a core radius, $r_c=0.21\pm0.01\arcsec (=0.78\pm0.04 \rm{pc})$, a tidal radius, $r_t=21.8\pm1.1\arcsec (=80.7\pm3.9 \rm{pc})$, and a concentration index $c=\log (r_t/r_c)=2.01\pm0.02$. The central surface brightness is 13.510 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. We also calculate the half-light radius, at $r_h=1.73\pm0.07\arcsec(=6.5\pm0.3 \rm{pc})$. The results show that, within 10 core radii, a King model fits the surface brightness distribution well. We find that this object falls in the same region of the $M_V$ vs. $\log R_h$ diagram as $ω$ Centauri, M54 and NGC 2419 in the Milky Way. All three of these objects have been claimed to be the stripped cores of now defunct dwarf galaxies. We discuss in detail whether GCs, stripped cores of dwarf spheroidals and normal dwarf galaxies form a continuous distribution in the $M_V$ versus $\log R_h$ plane, or if GCs and dwarf spheroidals constitute distinct classes of objects; we present arguments in favour of this latter view.

Optimal Path and Minimal Spanning Trees in Random Weighted Networks

We review results on the scaling of the optimal path length in random networks with weighted links or nodes. In strong disorder we find that the length of the optimal path increases dramatically compared to the known small world result for the minimum distance. For Erdős-Rényi (ER) and scale free networks (SF), with parameter $λ$ ($λ>3$), we find that the small-world nature is destroyed. We also find numerically that for weak disorder the length of the optimal path scales logaritmically with the size of the networks studied. We also review the transition between the strong and weak disorder regimes in the scaling properties of the length of the optimal path for ER and SF networks and for a general distribution of weights, and suggest that for any distribution of weigths, the distribution of optimal path lengths has a universal form which is controlled by the scaling parameter $Z=\ell_{\infty}/A$ where $A$ plays the role of the disorder strength, and $\ell_{\infty}$ is the length of the optimal path in strong disorder. The relation for $A$ is derived analytically and supported by numerical simulations. We then study the minimum spanning tree (MST) and show that it is composed of percolation clusters, which we regard as "super-nodes", connected by a scale-free tree. We furthermore show that the MST can be partitioned into two distinct components. One component the {\it superhighways}, for which the nodes with high centrality dominate, corresponds to the largest cluster at the percolation threshold which is a subset of the MST. In the other component, {\it roads}, low centrality nodes dominate. We demonstrate the significance identifying the superhighways by showing that one can improve significantly the global transport by improving a very small fraction of the network.

Atomistic Model Potential for PbTiO3 and PMN by Fitting First Principles Results

We have developed a shell model potential to describe PbTiO3 and PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) by fitting to first-principles results. At zero pressure, the model reproduces the temperature behavior of PbTiO3, but with a smaller transition temperature than experimentally observed. We then fit a shell model potential for the complex PMN based on the transferability of the interatomic potentials. We find that even for ordered PMN, quenching the structure gives a non-polar state, but with local polarization (off-center ions) indicative of relaxor behavior.

A "super" star cluster grown old: the most massive star cluster in the Local Group

We independently redetermine the reddening and age of the globular cluster 037-B327 in M31 by comparing independently obtained multicolour photometry with theoretical stellar population synthesis models. 037-B327 has long been known to have a very large reddening value, which we confirm to be E(B-V)=1.360+-0.013, in good agreement with the previous results. We redetermine its most likely age at 12.4+- 3.2 Gyr. 037-B327 is a prime example of an unusually bright early counterpart to the ubiquitous ``super'' star clusters presently observed in most high-intensity star-forming regions in the local Universe. In order to have survived for a Hubble time, we conclude that its stellar IMF cannot have been top-heavy. Using this constraint, and a variety of SSP models, we determine a photometric mass of M_{GC}=(3.0+-0.5)*10^7, somewhat depending on the SSP models used, the metallicity and age adopted and the IMF representation. This mass, and its relatively small uncertainties, make this object the most massive star cluster of any age in the Local Group. Assuming that the photometric mass estimate thus derived is fairly close to its dynamical mass, we predict that this GC has a (one-dimensional) velocity dispersion of order (72+-13)km/s. As a surviving "super" star cluster, this object is of prime importance for theories aimed at describing massive star cluster evolution.

Evidence of Coherent C-Axis Charge Transport in Underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 Superconductors

We have observed the plasma edge in the normal state c-axis far-infrared (far-IR) reflectivity of La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) single crystals at an unlikely Sr-doping concentration x = 0.07 but not in x = 0.09. We find that the c-axis scattering rate (Gc) is surprisingly small, Gc = 13 (+_) 2 cm-1 for x = 0.07 and Gc = 24 (+_) 1 cm-1 for x = 0.09 and nearly temperature independent but increases linearly with doping up to x = 0.16. We suggest that the apparent absence of the normal state plasma edge in the previous measurements is due to the larger Gc than the screened plasma frequency of the coherent free carriers. We conclude that the c-axis charge transport in LSCO in the underdoped regime is intrinsically coherent.

Electronic Structure of Calcium Hexaboride within the Weighted Density Approximation

We report calculations of the electronic structure of CaB$_6$ using the weighted density approximation (WDA) to density functional theory. We find a semiconducting band structure with a sizable gap, in contrast to local density approximation (LDA) results, but in accord with recent experimental data. In particular, we find an $X$-point band gap of 0.8 eV. The WDA correction of the LDA error in describing the electronic structure of CaB$_6$ is discussed in terms of the orbital character of the bands and the better cancelation of self-interactions within the WDA.

Asymmetries in the Production of Lambda0 in 250 GeV/c pi+-, K+- and p -- Nucleon Interactions

Using data from Fermilab fixed-target experiment E769, we have measured particle-antiparticle production asymmetries for Lambda0 hyperons in 250 GeV/c pi+-, K+- and p -- nucleon interactions. The asymmetries are measured as functions of Feynman-x (x_F) and p_t^2 over the ranges -0.12<=x_F<=0.12 and 0<=p_t^2<=3 (GeV/c)^2 (for positive beam) and -0.12<=x_F<=0.4 and 0<=p_t^2<=10 (GeV/c)^2 (for negative beam). We find substantial asymmetries, even at x_F around zero. We also observe leading-particle-type asymmetries. These latter effects are qualitatively as expected from valence-quark content of the target and variety of projectiles studied.
