Flux dynamics and vortex phase diagram of the new superconductor $MgB_2$

Magnetic critical current density and relaxation rate have been measured on $MgB_2$ bulks from 1.6 K to $T_c$ at magnetic fields up to 8 Tesla. A vortex phase diagram is depicted based on these measurement. Two phase boundaries $H_{irr}^{bulk}(T)$ and $H_{irr}^{g}(T)$ characterizing different irreversible flux motions are found. The $H_{irr}^{bulk}(T)$ is characterized by the appearance of the linear resistivity and is attributed to quantum vortex melting induced by quantum fluctuation of vortices in the rather clean system. The second boundary $ H_{irr}^g(T) $ reflects the irreversible flux motion in some local regions due to either very strong pinning or the surface barrier on the tiny grains.

Strong quantum fluctuation of vortices in the new superconductor $MgB_2$

By using transport and magnetic measurement, the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ and the irreversibility line $H_{irr}(T)$ has been determined. A big separation between $H_{c2}(0)$ and $H_{irr}(0)$ has been found showing the existence of a quantum vortex liquid state induced by quantum fluctuation of vortices in the new superconductor $MgB_2$. Further investigation on the magnetic relaxation shows that both the quantum tunneling and the thermally activated flux creep weakly depends on temperature. But when the melting field $H_{irr}$ is approached, a drastic rising of the relaxation rate is observed. This may imply that the melting of the vortex matter at a finite temperature is also induced by the quantum fluctuation of vortices.

Lower Critical Field at Odds with A S-Wave Superconductivity in The New Superconductor $MgB_2$

The lower critical field $H_{c1}$ has been carefully measured on a well shaped cylindrical sample of the new superconductor $MgB_2$ fabricated by high pressure synthesis. The penetration depth $λ$ is calculated from the $H_{c1}$ data. It is found that a linear relation of $H_{c1}(T)$ appears in whole temperature region below $T_c$. Furthermore a finite slope of $dH_{c1}/dT$ and $dλ(T)/dT$ remains down to the lowest temperature (2 K). These are inconsistent with the expectation for a widely thought s-wave superconductivity in $MgB_2$.

The same superconducting criticality for underdoped and overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 single crystals

By measuring the superconducting diamagnetic moments for an underdoped and an overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 single crystal with equal qualities and roughly equal transition temperatures, it is found that the underdoped sample has only one transition which corresponds to H_{c2}, but the overdoped sample has two transitions with the higher one at H_{c2}. Further investigation reveals the same upper-critical field H_{c2} for both samples although the overall charge densities are very different, indicating the possibility of a very direct and detailed equivalence of the superconducting condensation process in the two doping limits. The second transition for the overdoped sample can be understood as the bulk coupling between the superconducting clusters produced by macroscopic phase separation.

Local Disorder in the Oxygen Environment Around Praseodymium in YBCO:Pr from X-ray Absorption Fine Structure

We present K-edge XAFS (X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure) data for various concentrations of Pr in Y$_{1- x}$Pr$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$. The character of the Pr K-edge XAFS data indicate that most of the Pr substitutes onto the Y site and is well ordered with respect to the unit cell. These data also show that the amplitude of the first Pr-O peak is greatly reduced when compared to the first Y-O peak in pure YBCO, and decreases with increasing Pr concentration. In contrast, the Y K-edge data for these alloys show little if any change in the oxygen environment, while the Cu K-edge data show a 10\% reduction in the first Cu-O peak. Fits to the Pr data suggest that some oxygen atoms about the Pr become disordered and/or distorted; most of the Pr-O nearest- neighbor distances are 2.45 Å, but about 15-40\% of them are in a possibly broadened peak at 2.27$^{+0.03}_{-0.12}$ Å. The Cu K-edge XAFS data show a slight broadening but no loss of oxygens, which is consistent with a radial distortion of the Pr-O bond. The existence and the size of these two bond lengths is consistent with a mixture of Pr$^{3+}$ and Pr$^{4+}$ bonds, and to a formal valence of +3.33$^{+0.07}_{-0.18}$ for the Pr ion. This paper should be published in Feb. 1994 in Phys. Rev. B.
