Cool matter distribution in inner solar corona from 2023 total solar eclipse observation

Solar corona has been judged to consist of free electrons and highly ionized ions with extremely high temperature as a widely accepted knowledge. This view is changed by our eclipse observations. Distributions of cool matter represented by neutral iron atoms in hot inner solar corona are presented via derived global maps of solar Fraunhofer(F-) and Emission(E-) coronae, compared with those of continuum(Kontinuierlich, K-) corona formed by free electrons. The maps are obtained from simultaneous observations of dual filtering bands centered respectively at 659.4nm and 660.1nm, performed from twin telescopes during the total solar eclipse on April 20, 2023 at Com town of East Timor, assisted for judgement via spectral images obtained by a portable spectrograph. They show respectively presences of these neutral iron atoms yielding 659.3nm and 659.4nm lines in both the quiet sun and active regions. The distribution of the cool matter in form of line depression forms an inner F-corona, different from that of the cool matter in form of line enhancement. Both the distributions show a crucial difference from that of the free electrons represented by the K-corona map. It is also found that intensities of the F-corona and the E-corona induced by these neutral atoms are only small fractions of the K-corona, and the diffusion can be seen clearly in all these maps. They uncover also that the coronal heating resources do not distribute pervasively but likely form a thermodynamic griddle where minor photospheric neutral atoms can escape from the heating into the corona globally.

Spectropolarimetry of Fraunhofer lines in local upper solar atmosphere

Spectropolarimetric results of Fraunhofer lines between 516.3nm and 532.6nm are presented in local upper solar chromosphere, transition zone and inner corona below a height of about 0.04 solar radius above the solar limb. The data were acquired on Nov.3, 2013 during a total solar eclipse in Gabon by the prototype Fiber Arrayed Solar Optical Telescope(FASOT). It is found that the polarization amplitudes of the Fraunhofer lines in these layers depend strongly on specific spectral lines. Fraunhofer line at MgI$b_{1}$518.4nm can have a polarization amplitude up to 0.36$\%$ with respective to the continuum polarization level, while the polarizations of some lines like FeI/CrI524.7nm and FeI525.0nm are often under the detection limit 6.0$\times 10^{-4}$. The polarizations of the Fraunhofer lines, like the emission lines and the continuum, increase with height as a whole trend. The fractional linear polarization amplitudes of inner F-corona can be close to those of inner E-corona, and in general larger than those of inner K-corona. Rotation of the polarization direction of Fraunhofer line is often accompanied with variations in their polarization amplitudes and profile shapes. It is also judged from these polarimetric properties, along with evidences, that neutral atoms exist in these atmospheric layers. Thus the inner F-corona described here is induced by the neutral atoms, and the entropy of the inner corona evaluated becomes larger than those in the underneath layers due to more microstates found.

Formation of a simple cubic antiferromagnet through charge ordering in a double Dirac material

The appearance of spontaneous charge order in chemical systems is often associated with the emergence of novel, and useful, properties. Here we show through single crystal diffraction that the Eu ions in the mixed valent metal EuPd$_3$S$_4$ undergo long-range charge ordering at $T_{\mathrm{CO}} = 340 \mathrm{~K}$ resulting in simple cubic lattices of Eu$^{2+}$ ($J = 7/2$) and Eu$^{3+}$ ($J = 0$) ions. As only one of the two sublattices has a non-magnetic ground state, the charge order results in the emergence of remarkably simple G-type antiferromagnetic order at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 2.85(6) \mathrm{~K}$, observed in magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction. Application of a $0.3 \mathrm{~T}$ field is sufficient to induce a spin flop transition to a magnetically polarized, but still charge ordered, state. Density functional theory calculations show that this charge order also modifies the electronic degeneracies present in the material: without charge order, EuPd$_3$S$_4$ is an example of a double Dirac material containing 8-fold degenerate electronic states, greater than the maximum degeneracy of six possible in molecular systems. The symmetry reduction from charge order transmutes 8-fold double Dirac states into 4-fold Dirac states, a degeneracy that can be preserved even in the presence of the magnetic order. Our results show not only how charge order can be used to produce interesting magnetic lattices, but also how it can be used to engineer controlled degeneracies in electronic states.

Morphological evidence for nanoflares heating warm loops in the solar corona

Nanoflares are impulsive energy releases by magnetic reconnection in the braided coronal magnetic field, which is a potential mechanism for heating the corona. However, there are still sporadic observations of the interchange of braiding structure segments and footpoints inside coronal loops, which is predicted to be the morphological evolution of the reconnecting magnetic bundles in the nanoflare picture. This work aims to detect the evolutions of the pairs of braiding strands within the apparent single coronal loops observed in Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) images. The loop strands are detected on two kinds of upsampled AIA 193 Å images, which are obtained by upscaling the Point Spread Function matched AIA images via Bicubic interpolation and are generated using a super-resolution convolutional neural network, respectively. The architecture of the network is designed to map the AIA images to unprecedentedly high spatial resolution coronal images taken by High-resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) during its brief flight. At times, pairs of separate strands that appear braided together later evolved into pairs of almost parallel strands with completely exchanged parts. These evolutions offer morphological evidence that magnetic reconnections between the braiding strands have taken place, which is further supported by the appearance of transient hot emissions containing significant high-temperature components (T > 5MK) at the footpoints of the braiding structures. The brief appearances of the two rearranging strands support that magnetic reconnections have occurred within what appears to be a single AIA loop.

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy Onboard the SATech-01 Satellite

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. In addition, LEIA is able to carry out scientific observations to find new transients and to monitor known sources in the soft X-ray band, albeit limited useful observing time available.

Effect of random antiferromagnetic exchange on the spin waves in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet

Neutron scattering is used to study spin waves in the three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet YTiO$_3$, with spin-spin exchange disorder introduced $via$ La-substitution at the Y site. No significant changes are observed in the spin-wave dispersion up to a La concentration of 20%. However, a strong broadening of the spectrum is found, indicative of shortened spin-wave lifetimes. Density-functional theory calculations predict minimal changes in exchange constants as a result of average structural changes due to La substitution, in agreement with the data. The absence of significant changes in the spin-wave dispersion, the considerable lifetime effect, and the reduced ordered magnetic moment previously observed in the La-substituted system are qualitatively captured by an isotropic, nearest-neighbor, three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet model with random antiferromagnetic exchange. We therefore establish Y$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$ as a model system to study the effect of antiferromagnetic spin-exchange disorder in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet.

Microsecond Isomer at the N=20 Island of Shape Inversion Observed at FRIB

Excited-state spectroscopy from the first Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) experiment is reported. A 24(2)-$μ$s isomer was observed with the FRIB Decay Station initiator (FDSi) through a cascade of 224- and 401-keV $γ$ rays in coincidence with $^{32}\textrm{Na}$ nuclei. This is the only known microsecond isomer ($1{\text{ }μ\text{s}}\leq T_{1/2} < 1\text{ ms}$) in the region. This nucleus is at the heart of the $N=20$ island of shape inversion and is at the crossroads of spherical shell-model, deformed shell-model, and ab initio theories. It can be represented as the coupling of a proton hole and neutron particle to $^{32}\textrm{Mg}$, $^{32}\textrm{Mg}+π^{-1} + ν^{+1}$. This odd-odd coupling and isomer formation provides a sensitive measure of the underlying shape degrees of freedom of $^{32}\textrm{Mg}$, where the onset of spherical-to-deformed shape inversion begins with a low-lying deformed $2^+$ state at 885 keV and a low-lying shape-coexisting $0_2^+$ state at 1058 keV. We suggest two possible explanations for the 625-keV isomer in $^{32}$Na: a $6^-$ spherical shape isomer that decays by $E2$ or a $0^+$ deformed spin isomer that decays by $M2$. The present results and calculations are most consistent with the latter, indicating that the low-lying states are dominated by deformation.

The 17 April 2021 widespread solar energetic particle event

Context. A solar eruption on 17 April 2021 produced a widespread Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event that was observed by five longitudinally well-separated observers in the inner heliosphere at heliocentric distances of 0.42 to 1 au: BepiColombo, Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter, STEREO A, and near-Earth spacecraft. The event produced relativistic electrons and protons. It was associated with a long-lasting solar hard X-ray flare and a medium fast Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) with a speed of 880 km/s driving a shock, an EUV wave as well as long-lasting radio burst activity showing four distinct type III burst. Methods. A multi-spacecraft analysis of remote-sensing and in-situ observations is applied to attribute the SEP observations at the different locations to the various potential source regions at the Sun. An ENLIL simulation is used to characterize the interplanetary state and its role for the energetic particle transport. The magnetic connection between each spacecraft and the Sun is determined. Based on a reconstruction of the coronal shock front we determine the times when the shock establishes magnetic connections with the different observers. Radio observations are used to characterize the directivity of the four main injection episodes, which are then employed in a 2D SEP transport simulation. Results. Timing analysis of the inferred SEP solar injection suggests different source processes being important for the electron and the proton event. Comparison among the characteristics and timing of the potential particle sources, such as the CME-driven shock or the flare, suggests a stronger shock contribution for the proton event and a more likely flare-related source of the electron event. Conclusions. We find that in this event an important ingredient for the wide SEP spread was the wide longitudinal range of about 110 degrees covered by distinct SEP injections.

First wide field-of-view X-ray observations by a lobster eye focusing telescope in orbit

As a novel X-ray focusing technology, lobster eye micro-pore optics (MPO) feature both a wide observing field of view and true imaging capability, promising sky monitoring with significantly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in soft X-rays. Since first proposed by Angel (1979), the optics have been extensively studied, developed and trialed over the past decades. In this Letter, we report on the first-light results from a flight experiment of the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy ($LEIA$), a pathfinder of the wide-field X-ray telescope of the Einstein Probe mission. The piggyback imager, launched in July 2022, has a mostly un-vignetted field of view of $18.6^\circ \times 18.6^\circ $. Its spatial resolution is in the range of 4$-$7 arcmin in FWHM and the focal spot effective area is 2$-$3 cm$^2$, both showing only mild fluctuations across the field of view. We present images of the Galactic center region, Sco X-1 and the diffuse Cygnus Loop nebular taken in snapshot observations over 0.5$-$4 keV. These are truly wide-field X-ray images of celestial bodies observed, for the first time, by a focusing imaging telescope. Initial analyses of the in-flight data show excellent agreement between the observed images and the on-ground calibration and simulations. The instrument and its characterization are briefly described, as well as the flight experiment. The results provide a solid basis for the development of the present and proposed wide-field X-ray missions using lobster eye MPO.

Determining impact parameters of heavy-ion collisions at low-intermediate incident energies using deep learning with convolutional neural network

A deep learning based method with the convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm for determining the impact parameters is developed using the constrained molecular dynamics model simulations, focusing on the heavy-ion collisions at the low-intermediate incident energies from several ten to one hundred MeV/nucleon in which the emissions of heavy fragments with the charge numbers larger than 3 become crucial. To make the CNN applicable in the task of the impact parameter determination at the present energy range, specific improvements are made in the input selection, the CNN construction and the CNN training. It is demonstrated from the comparisons of the deep CNN method and the conventional methods with the impact parameter-sensitive observables, that the deep CNN method shows better performance for determining the impact parameters, especially leading to the capability of providing better recognition of the central collision events. With a proper consideration of the experimental filter effect in both training and testing processes to keep consistency with the actual experiments, the good performance of the deep CNN method holds, and shows significantly better in terms of predicting the impact parameters and recognizing the central collision events, compared to that of the conventional methods, demonstrating the superiority of the present deep CNN method. The deep CNN method with the consideration of the filter effect is applied in the deduction of nuclear stopping power. Higher accuracy for the stopping power deduction is achieved benefitting from the better impact parameter determination using the deep CNN method, compared to using the the conventional methods. This result reveals the importance to select a reliable impact parameter determination method in the experimental deduction of the nuclear stopping power as well as other observables.

Theoretical analysis of a Polarized Two-Photon Michelson Interferometer with Broadband Chaotic Light

In this paper, we study two-photon interference of broadband chaotic light in a Michelson interferometer with two-photon-absorption detector. The theoretical analysis is based on two-photon interference and Feynman path integral theory. The two-photon coherence matrix is introduced to calculate the second-order interference pattern with polarizations being taken into account. Our study shows that the polarization is another dimension, as well as time and space, to tune the interference pattern in the two-photon interference process. It can act as a switch to manipulate the interference process and open the gate to many new experimental schemes.

Growth and characterization of large (Y,La)TiO$_3$ and (Y,Ca)TiO$_3$ single crystals

The Mott-insulating rare-earth titanates (RTiO$_3$, R being a rare-earth ion) are an important class of materials that encompasses interesting spin-orbital phases as well as ferromagnet-antiferromagnet and insulator-metal transitions. The growth of these materials has been plagued by difficulties related to overoxidation, which arises from a strong tendency of Ti$^{3+}$ to oxidize to Ti$^{4+}$. We describe our efforts to grow sizable single crystals of YTiO$_3$ and its La-substituted and Ca-doped variants with the optical travelling-solvent floating-zone technique. We present sample characterization $via$ chemical composition analysis, magnetometry, charge transport, neutron scattering, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism to understand macroscopic physical property variations associated with overoxidation. Furthermore, we demonstrate a good signal-to-noise ratio in inelastic magnetic neutron scattering measurements of spin-wave excitations. A superconducting impurity phase, found to appear in Ca-doped samples at high doping levels, is identified as TiO.

MERGHERS Pilot: MeerKAT discovery of diffuse emission in nine massive Sunyaev-Zel'dovich-selected galaxy clusters from ACT

The MeerKAT Exploration of Relics, Giant Halos, and Extragalactic Radio Sources (MERGHERS) survey is a planned project to study a large statistical sample of galaxy clusters with the MeerKAT observatory. Here we present the results of a 16--hour pilot project, observed in response to the 2019 MeerKAT Shared Risk proposal call, to test the feasibility of using MeerKAT for a large cluster study using short (0.2--2.1\,hour) integration times. The pilot focuses on 1.28\,GHz observations of 13 massive, low-to-intermediate redshift ($0.22 < z < 0.65$) clusters from the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich-selected Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) DR5 catalogue that show multiwavelength indications of dynamical disturbance. With a 70 per cent detection rate (9/13 clusters), this pilot study validates our proposed MERGHERS observing strategy and provides twelve detections of diffuse emission, eleven of them new, indicating the strength of MeerKAT for such types of studies. The detections (signal-to-noise ratio $\gtrsim6$) are summarised as follows: two systems host both relic(s) and a giant radio halo, five systems host radio halos, and two have candidate radio halos. Power values, $k$-corrected to 1.4 GHz assuming a fiducial spectral index of $α= -1.3 \pm 0.4$, are consistent with known radio halo and relic scaling relations.

The origin of quasi-periodicities during circular ribbon flares

Solar flares with a fan-spine magnetic topology can form circular ribbons. The previous study based on Hαline observations of the solar flares during March 05, 2014 by Xu et al. (2017) revealed uniform and continuous rotation of the magnetic fan-spine. Preliminary analysis of the flare time profiles revealed quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) with similar properties in hard X-rays, Hα, and microwaves. In this work, we address which process the observed periodicities are related to: periodic acceleration of electrons or plasma heating? QPPs are analysed in the Hαemission from the centre of the fan (inner ribbon R1), a circular ribbon (R2), a remote source (R3), and an elongated ribbon (R4) located between R2 and R3. The methods of correlation, Fourier, wavelet, and empirical mode decomposition are used. QPPs in Hαemission are compared with those in microwave and X-ray emission. We found multi-wavelength QPPs with periods around 150 s, 125 s, and 190 s. The 150-s period is seen to co-exist in Hα, hard X-rays, and microwave emissions, that allowed us to connect it with flare kernels R1 and R2. These kernels spatially coincide with the site of the primary flare energy release. The 125-s period is found in the Hαemission of the elongated ribbon R4 and the microwave emission at 5.7 GHz during the decay phase. The 190-s period is present in the emission during all flare phases in the Hαemission of both the remote source R3 and the elongated ribbon R4, in soft X-rays, and microwaves at 4--8 GHz. We connected the dominant 150-s QPPs with the slipping reconnection mechanism occurring in the fan. We suggested that the period of 125 s in the elongated ribbon can be caused by a kink oscillation of the outer spine connecting the primary reconnection site with the remote footpoint. The period of 190 s is associated with the 3-min sunspot oscillations.

Transverse coronal loop oscillations excited by homologous circular-ribbon flares

We report our multiwavelength observations of two homologous circular-ribbon flares (CRFs) in active region 11991 on 2014 March 5, focusing on the transverse oscillations of an extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) loop excited by the flares. The transverse oscillations are of fast standing kink-mode. The first-stage oscillation triggered by the C2.8 flare is decayless with lower amplitudes (310$-$510 km). The periods (115$-$118 s) in different wavelengths are nearly the same, indicating coherent oscillations. The magnetic field of the loop is estimated to be 65$-$78 G. The second-stage oscillation triggered by the M1.0 flare is decaying with larger amplitudes (1250$-$1280 km). The periods decreases from 117 s in 211 Å to 70 s in 171 Å, implying a decrease of loop length or an implosion after a gradual expansion. The damping time, being 147$-$315 s, increases with the period, so that the values of $τ/P$ are close to each other in different wavelengths. The thickness of the inhomogeneous layer is estimated to be $\sim$0\farcs45 under the assumption of resonant absorption. This is the first observation of the excitation of two kink-mode loop oscillations by two sympathetic flares. The results are important for understanding of the excitation of kink oscillations of coronal loops and hence the energy balance in the solar corona. Our findings also validate the prevalence of significantly amplified amplitudes of oscillations by successive drivers.

Coordinated observations between China and Europe to follow active region 12709

We present the first images of a coordinated campaign to follow active region NOAA 12709 on 2018 May 13 as part of a joint effort between three observatories (China-Europe). The active region was close to disk center and enclosed a small pore, a tight polarity inversion line and a filament in the chromosphere. The active region was observed with the 1.5-meter GREGOR solar telescope on Tenerife (Spain) with spectropolarimetry using GRIS in the He I 10830 Å spectral range and with HiFI using two broad-band filter channels. In addition, the Lomnicky Stit Observatory (LSO, Slovakia) recorded the same active region with the new Solar Chromospheric Detector (SCD) in spectroscopic mode at H$α$ 6562 Å. The third ground-based telescope was located at the Fuxian Solar Observatory (China), where the active region was observed with the 1-meter New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST), using the Multi-Channel High Resolution Imaging System at H$α$ 6562 Å. Overlapping images of the active region from all three telescopes will be shown as well as preliminary Doppler line-of-sight (LOS) velocities. The potential of such observations are discussed.

Cold optical design for the Large Aperture Simons Observatory telescope

The Simons Observatory will consist of a single large (6 m diameter) telescope and a number of smaller (0.5 m diameter) refracting telescopes designed to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background to unprecedented accuracy. The large aperture telescope is the same design as the CCAT-prime telescope, a modified Crossed Dragone design with a field-of-view of over 7.8 degrees diameter at 90 GHz. This paper presents an overview of the cold reimaging optics for this telescope and what drove our choice of 350-400 mm diameter silicon lenses in a 2.4 m cryostat over other possibilities. We will also consider the future expandability of this design to CMB Stage-4 and beyond.

Orbital-selective Kondo-lattice and enigmatic f-electrons emerging from inside the antiferromagnetic phase of a heavy fermion

Novel electronic phenomena frequently form in heavy fermions as a consequence of the mutual nature of localization and itineracy of f electrons. On the magnetically ordered side of the heavy fermion phase diagram, f moments are expected to be localized and decoupled from the Fermi surface. It remains ambiguous whether a Kondo lattice can develop inside the magnetically ordered phase. Using spectroscopic imaging with the scanning tunneling microscope, complemented by neutron scattering, x ray absorption spectroscopy, and dynamical mean field theory, we probe the electronic states in the antiferromagnetic USb2 as a function of temperature. We visualize a large gap in the antiferromagnetic phase at high temperatures, T lower than TN 200 K, within which Kondo hybridization gradually develops below Tcoh 80 K. Our dynamical mean field theory calculations indicate the antiferromagnetism and Kondo lattice to reside predominantly on different f orbitals, promoting orbital selectivity as a new conception into how these two phenomena coexist in heavy fermions. Finally, at Tstar 45 K we discover a novel 1st order like electronic transition through the abrupt emergence of non trivial 5f electronic states that may share some resemblance to the hidden order phase of URu2Si2.
