Complex magnetic phase diagram with a small phase pocket in a three-dimensional frustrated magnet CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$

Frustrated magnets with a strong spin-lattice coupling can show rich magnetic phases and the associated fascinating phenomena. A promising platform is the breathing pyrochlore magnet CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ with localized $S=3/2$ Cr$^{3+}$ ions, which is proposed to be effectively viewed as an $S=6$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the face-centered-cubic lattice. Here, we unveil that CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ exhibits a complex magnetic phase diagram with a small phase pocket ($A$ phase) by means of magnetization, magnetostriction, magnetocapacitance, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements in pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 60 T. Remarkably, the appearance of $A$ phase is accompanied by anomalous magnetostrictive and magnetocapacitive responses, suggesting the emergence of helimagnetism in contrast to the neighboring commensurate magnetic phases. Besides, the high-entropy nature is confirmed in the high-temperature side of $A$ phase. These features are potentially related to a thermal fluctuation-driven multiple-$q$ state caused by the magnetic frustration, which has been theoretically predicted but yet experimentally undiscovered.

Distinct spin and orbital dynamics in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$

The unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has long served as a benchmark for theories of correlated-electron materials. The determination of the superconducting pairing mechanism requires detailed experimental information on collective bosonic excitations as potential mediators of Cooper pairing. We have used Ru $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to obtain comprehensive maps of the electronic excitations of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ over the entire Brillouin zone. We observe multiple branches of dispersive spin and orbital excitations associated with distinctly different energy scales. The spin and orbital dynamical response functions calculated within the dynamical mean-field theory are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Our results highlight the Hund metal nature of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ and provide key information for the understanding of its unconventional superconductivity.

Construction of Precision sMDT Detector for ATLAS Muon Spectrometer Upgrade

This paper describes the small-diameter monitored drift-tube detector construction at the University of Michigan as a contribution to the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer upgrade for the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Measurements of the first 30 chambers built at Michigan show that the drift tube wire position accuracy meets the specification of 20 microns. The positions of the platforms for alignment and magnetic field sensors are all installed well within the required precision. The cosmic ray test measurements show single wire tracking resolution of 100 +- 7 microns with an average detection efficiency above 99 %. The infrastructure, tooling, techniques, and procedures for chamber production are described in detail. The results from the chamber quality control tests of the first 30 constructed chambers are reported.

Construction and testing of sMDT tubes at the University of Michigan for the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer upgrade

This paper reports on the design and construction of infrastructure and test stations for small-diameter monitored drift tube (sMDT) assembly and testing at the University of Michigan (UM) to prepare for the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer upgrade for the high-luminosity program of the Large Hadron Collider. Procedures of the tube assembly and quality assurance and control (QA/QC) tests are described in detail. More than 99% of the tubes meet the tube QA/QC specifications based on 2100 tubes built at UM. The UM test stations are also used for QA/QC testing on the tubes constructed at Michigan State University. These tubes are being used to construct the sMDT chambers which will replace the current MDT chambers of the barrel inner station of the Muon Spectrometer.

Picture Fuzzy Interactional Aggregation Operators via Strict Triangular Norms and Applications to Multi-Criteria Decision Making

The picture fuzzy set, characterized by three membership degrees, is a helpful tool for multi-criteria decision making (MCDM). This paper investigates the structure of the closed operational laws in the picture fuzzy numbers (PFNs) and proposes efficient picture fuzzy MCDM methods. We first introduce an admissible order for PFNs and prove that all PFNs form a complete lattice under this order. Then, we give some specific examples to show the non-closeness of some existing picture fuzzy aggregation operators. To ensure the closeness of the operational laws in PFNs, we construct a new class of picture fuzzy operators based on strict triangular norms, which consider the interaction between the positive degrees (negative degrees) and the neutral degrees. Based on these new operators, we obtain the picture fuzzy interactional weighted average (PFIWA) operator and the picture fuzzy interactional weighted geometric (PFIWG) operator. They are proved to be monotonous, idempotent, bounded, shift-invariant, and homogeneous. We also establish a novel MCDM method under the picture fuzzy environment applying PFIWA and PFIWG operators. Furthermore, we present an illustrative example for a clear understanding of our method. We also give the comparative analysis among the operators induced by six classes of famous triangular norms.

Pressure-induced monotonic enhancement of Tc to over 30 K in the superconducting Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films

The successful synthesis of superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films with the highest Tc ~ 15 K has reignited great enthusiasms on this family of potential analogue to high-Tc cuprates. Pursuing a higher Tc is always an imperative task in studying a new superconducting material system. Here we report high-quality Pr0.82Sr0.18NiO2 thin films with Tconset ~ 17 K synthesized by carefully tuning the amount of CaH2 in the topological chemical reduction and the effect of pressure on its superconducting properties by measuring electrical resistivity under various pressures in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that the onset temperature of the superconductivity, Tconset, can be enhanced monotonically from ~ 17 K at ambient pressure to ~ 31 K at 12.1 GPa without showing signatures of saturation upon increasing pressure. This encouraging result indicates that the Tc of infinite-layer nickelates superconductors still has room to go higher and it can be further boosted by applying higher pressures or strain engineering in the heterostructure films.

Border of the Island of Inversion: Unbound states in $^{29}$Ne

The nucleus $^{29}$Ne is situated at the border of the island of inversion. Despite significant efforts, no bound low-lying intruder $f_{7/2}$-state, which would place $^{29}$Ne firmly inside the island of inversion, has yet been observed. Here, the first investigation of unbound states of $^{29}$Ne is reported. The states were populated in $^{30}\mathrm{Ne}(p,pn)$ and $^{30}\mathrm{Na}(p,2p)$ reactions at a beam energy of around $230$ MeV/nucleon, and analyzed in terms of their resonance properties, partial cross sections and momentum distributions. The momentum distributions are compared to calculations using the eikonal, direct reaction model, allowing $\ell$-assignments for the observed states. The lowest-lying resonance at an excitation energy of 1.48(4) MeV shows clear signs of a significant $\ell$=3-component, giving first evidence for $f_{7/2}$ single particle strength in $^{29}$Ne. The excitation energies and strengths of the observed states are compared to shell-model calculations using the sdpf-u-mix interaction

A First Glimpse at the Shell Structure beyond $^{54}$Ca: Spectroscopy of $^{55}$K, $^{55}$Ca, and $^{57}$Ca

States in the $N=35$ and 37 isotopes $^{55,57}$Ca have been populated by direct proton-induced nucleon removal reactions from $^{56,58}$Sc and $^{56}$Ca beams at the RIBF. In addition, the $(p,2p)$ quasi-free single-proton removal reaction from $^{56}$Ca was studied. Excited states in $^{55}$K, $^{55}$Ca, and $^{57}$Ca were established for the first time via in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy. Results for the proton and neutron removal reactions from $^{56}$Ca to states in $^{55}$K and $^{55}$Ca for the level energies, excited state lifetimes, and exclusive cross sections agree well with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations using different approaches. The observation of a short-lived state in $^{57}$Ca suggests a transition in the calcium isotopic chain from single-particle dominated states at $N=35$ to collective excitations at $N=37$.

Determining impact parameters of heavy-ion collisions at low-intermediate incident energies using deep learning with convolutional neural network

A deep learning based method with the convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm for determining the impact parameters is developed using the constrained molecular dynamics model simulations, focusing on the heavy-ion collisions at the low-intermediate incident energies from several ten to one hundred MeV/nucleon in which the emissions of heavy fragments with the charge numbers larger than 3 become crucial. To make the CNN applicable in the task of the impact parameter determination at the present energy range, specific improvements are made in the input selection, the CNN construction and the CNN training. It is demonstrated from the comparisons of the deep CNN method and the conventional methods with the impact parameter-sensitive observables, that the deep CNN method shows better performance for determining the impact parameters, especially leading to the capability of providing better recognition of the central collision events. With a proper consideration of the experimental filter effect in both training and testing processes to keep consistency with the actual experiments, the good performance of the deep CNN method holds, and shows significantly better in terms of predicting the impact parameters and recognizing the central collision events, compared to that of the conventional methods, demonstrating the superiority of the present deep CNN method. The deep CNN method with the consideration of the filter effect is applied in the deduction of nuclear stopping power. Higher accuracy for the stopping power deduction is achieved benefitting from the better impact parameter determination using the deep CNN method, compared to using the the conventional methods. This result reveals the importance to select a reliable impact parameter determination method in the experimental deduction of the nuclear stopping power as well as other observables.

Investigation of the ground-state spin inversion in the neutron-rich 47,49Cl isotopes

A first gamma-ray study of 47,49Cl spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with 50Ar projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt de-excitation gamma-rays were measured with the NaI(Tl) array DALI2+. Through the one-proton knockout reaction 50Ar(p,2p), a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of 49Cl from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity J = 3/2+ is deduced for the ground state of 49Cl, similar to the recently studied N = 32 isotope 51K.

Potential PeVatron supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 seen in the highest-energy gamma rays

Cosmic rays (protons and other atomic nuclei) are believed to gain energies of petaelectronvolts (PeV) and beyond at astrophysical particle accelerators called 'PeVatrons' inside our Galaxy. Although a characteristic feature of a PeVatron is expected to be a hard gamma-ray energy spectrum that extends beyond 100 teraelectronvolts (TeV) without a cutoff, none of the currently known sources exhibits such a spectrum due to the low maximum energy of accelerated cosmic rays or insufficient detector sensitivity around 100 TeV. Here we report the observation of gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 above 10 TeV. This work provides flux data points up to and above 100 TeV and indicates that the very-high-energy gamma-ray emission above 10 TeV is well correlated with a molecular cloud rather than the pulsar PSR J2229+6114. Regarding the gamma-ray emission mechanism of G106.3+2.7, this morphological feature appears to favor a hadronic origin via the π0 decay caused by accelerated relativistic protons over a leptonic one via the inverse-Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. Furthermore, we point out that an X-ray flux upper limit on the synchrotron spectrum would provide important information to firmly establish the hadronic scenario as the mechanism of particle acceleration at the source.

Gamma-ray Observation of the Cygnus Region in the 100 TeV Energy Region

We report observations of gamma-ray emissions with energies in the 100 TeV energy region from the Cygnus region in our Galaxy. Two sources are significantly detected in the directions of the Cygnus OB1 and OB2 associations. Based on their positional coincidences, we associate one with a pulsar PSR J2032+4127 and the other mainly with a pulsar wind nebula PWN G75.2+0.1 with the pulsar moving away from its original birthplace situated around the centroid of the observed gamma-ray emission. This work would stimulate further studies of particle acceleration mechanisms at these gamma-ray sources.

Tuning magnetic and transport properties in quasi-2D (Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ single crystals

We report an optimized chemical vapor transport method to grow single crystals of (Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ where x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 & 1. Single crystals up to 4\,mm\,$\times$\,3\,mm\,$\times$\,200\,$μ$m were obtained by this method. As-grown crystals characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, and powder x-ray diffraction measurements. The structural characterization shows that all crystals crystallize in monoclinic symmetry with the space group $C2/m$ (No. 12). We have further investigated the magnetic properties of this series of single crystals. The magnetic measurements of the all as-grown single crystals show long-range antiferromagnetic order along all crystallographic principal axes. Overall, the Néel temperature TN is non-monotonous, with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ doping the temperature of the antiferromagnetic phase transition first decreases from 80 K for pristine Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ (x = 0) up to x = 0.5, and then increases again to 155 K for pure Ni$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ (x = 1). The magnetic anisotropy switches from out-of-plane to in-plane as a function of composition in (Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ series. Transport studies under hydrostatic pressure on the parent compound Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ evidence an insulator-metal transition at an applied critical pressure of ~22 GPa

First Detection of sub-PeV Diffuse Gamma Rays from the Galactic Disk: Evidence for Ubiquitous Galactic Cosmic Rays beyond PeV Energies

We report, for the first time, the long-awaited detection of diffuse gamma rays with energies between 100 TeV and 1 PeV in the Galactic disk. Particularly, all gamma rays above 398 TeV are observed apart from known TeV gamma-ray sources and compatible with expectations from the hadronic emission scenario in which gamma rays originate from the decay of $π^0$'s produced through the interaction of protons with the interstellar medium in the Galaxy. This is strong evidence that cosmic rays are accelerated beyond PeV energies in our Galaxy and spread over the Galactic disk.

Heavy-flavour studies with a high-luminosity fixed-target experiment at the LHC

Extraction of the multi-TeV proton and lead LHC beams with a bent crystal or by using an internal gas target allows one to perform the most energetic fixed-target experiment ever. pp, pd and pA collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 115 GeV and Pbp and PbA collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 72 GeV can be studied with high precision and modern detection techniques over a broad rapidity range. Using the LHCb or the ALICE detector in a fixed-target mode offers unprecedented possibilities to access heavy-flavour production in a new energy domain, half way between the SPS and the nominal RHIC energy. In this contribution, a review of projection studies for quarkonium and open charm and beauty production with both detector set-ups used with various nuclear targets and the LHC lead beams is presented.

1 Low power continuous-wave nonlinear optics in silica glass integrated waveguide structures

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are a key component [1] for future telecommunication networks, where demands for greater bandwidth, network flexibility, low energy consumption and cost must all be met. The quest for all optical components has naturally targeted materials with extremely large nonlinearity, including chalcogenide glasses (ChG) [2] and semiconductors, such as silicon [3] and AlGaAs [4]. Yet issues such as immature fabrication technologies for ChG, and high linear and nonlinear losses for semiconductors, motivate the search for other materials. Here we present the first demonstration of nonlinear optics in integrated silica based glass waveguides using continuous wave (CW) light. We demonstrate four wave mixing (FWM), with low (7mW) CW pump power at a wavelength of 1550nm, in high index doped silica glass ring resonators capable of performing in photonic telecommunications networks as linear filters [5]. The high reliability, design flexibility, and manufacturability of our device raises the possibility of a new platform for future low cost nonlinear all optical PICs.

Proximate ferromagnetic state in the Kitaev model material $α$-RuCl$_{3}$

$α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a major candidate for the realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, but its zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures indicates deviations from the Kitaev model. We have quantified the spin Hamiltonian of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ by a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the Ru $L_{3}$ absorption edge. In the paramagnetic state, the quasi-elastic intensity of magnetic excitations has a broad maximum around the zone center without any local maxima at the zigzag magnetic Bragg wavevectors. This finding implies that the zigzag order is fragile and readily destabilized by competing ferromagnetic correlations. The classical ground state of the experimentally determined Hamiltonian is actually ferromagnetic. The zigzag state is stabilized via a quantum "order by disorder" mechanism, leaving ferromagnetism -- along with the Kitaev spin liquid -- as energetically proximate metastable states. The three closely competing states and their collective excitations hold the key to the theoretical understanding of the unusual properties of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ in magnetic fields.
