The Pristine Dwarf Galaxy Survey -- VII. The metallicity distributions of 12 Milky Way faint satellites

Spectroscopic studies of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies are typically limited to small samples of stars due to the scarcity of sufficiently bright targets. The small number statistics and possible presence of contaminants still hamper solid determinations of their metallicity distribution function. In this work, we characterise the metallicity distributions of 12 Milky Way faint satellites by exploiting deep narrow-band CaHK photometry from the Pristine dwarf galaxy survey. In order to derive accurate stellar photometric metallicities, we combined it with deep broad-band g and r photometry from Mu\~noz et al. (2018) and Pan-STARRS1, covering each system out to 5-8 times their half-light radius Rh, and reaching magnitudes as faint as g~23. Membership probabilities were determined incorporating the available spatial, photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic information, further refined using the derived photometric metallicities. We identified 3917 probable member stars across the 12 systems, more than doubling the numbers recovered by previous spectroscopic studies. We deliver complete metallicity distributions that yield robust average metallicities and dispersions previously inaccessible for most of the systems examined in this study. We identify 170 candidate extremely metal-poor stars distributed across all systems, and confirm a departure from the linear luminosity-metallicity relation in the ultra-faint regime, with systems scattering around [Fe/H]~-2.3 dex. Given the extensive mass coverage of our sample, we were able to investigate the presence of metallicity gradients, finding clear evidence of radial variations in massive systems, but none in the ultra-faint dwarfs within 2.5xRh. The photometric strategy presented in this paper will continue to serve as an effective complement to future spectroscopic surveys.

The Pristine survey. XXVI. Chemical abundances of subgiant stars of the extremelymetal-poor stream C-19

Context: The C-19 stellar stream is the most metal-poor stream known to date. While its width and velocity dispersion indicate a dwarf galaxy origin, its metallicity spread and abundance patterns are more similar to those of globular clusters (GCs). If it is indeed of GC origin, its extremely low metallicity ([Fe/H]=-3.4, estimated from giant stars) implies that these stellar systems can form out of gas that is as extremely poor in metals as this. Previously, only giant stream stars were observed spectroscopically, although the majority of stream stars are unevolved stars. Aims: We pushed the spectroscopic observations to the subgiant branch stars ($G\approx 20$) in order to consolidate the chemical and dynamical properties of C-19. Methods: We used the high-efficiency spectrograph X-shooter fed by the ESO 8.2 m VLT telescope to observe 15 candidate subgiant C-19 members. The spectra were used to measure radial velocities and to determine chemical abundances using the \mygi\ code. Results; We developed a likelihood model that takes metallicity and radial velocities into account. We conclude that 12 stars are likely members of C-19, while 3 stars (S05, S12, and S13) are likely contaminants. When these 3 stars are excluded, our model implies a mean metallicity $\rm \langle [Fe/H]\rangle = -3.1\pm 0.1$, the mean radial velocity is $\langle v_r\rangle = -192\pm3$ kms$^{-1}$, and the velocity dispersion is $\sigma_{vr} = 5.9^{+3.6}_{-5.9}$ kms$^{-1}$. This all agrees within errors with previous studies. The A(Mg) of a sample of 15 C-19 members, including 6 giant stars, shows a standard deviation of 0.44 dex, and the mean uncertainty on Mg is 0.25 dex. Conclusions: Our preferred interpretation of the current data is that C-19 is a disrupted GC. We cannot completely rule out the possibility that the GC could have belonged to a dwarf galaxy that contained more metal-rich stars, however. This scenario would explain the radial velocity members at higher metallicity, as well as the width and velocity dispersion of the stream. In either case, a GC formed out of gas as poor in metals as these stars seems necessary to explain the existence of C-19. The possibility that no GC was associated with C-19 cannot be ruled out either.

HR-GO I: Comprehensive NLTE abundance analysis of the Cetus stream

Dwarf galaxy streams encode vast amounts of information essential to understanding early galaxy formation and nucleosynthesis channels. Due to the variation in the timescales of star formation history in their progenitors, stellar streams serve as `snapshots' that record different stages of galactic chemical evolution. This study focusses on the Cetus stream, stripped from a low-mass dwarf galaxy. We carried out a comprehensive analysis of the chemical composition of 22 member stars based on their high-resolution spectra. We derived abundances for up to 28 chemical species from C to Dy and, for 20 of them, we account for the departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium. We confirm that the Cetus stream has a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = $-2.11$ $\pm$ 0.21. All observed Cetus stars are $\alpha$ enhanced with [$\alpha$/Fe] $\simeq$ 0.3. The absence of the $\alpha$-`knee' implies that star formation stopped before iron production in type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) became substantial. Neutron capture element abundances suggest that both the rapid (r-) and the main slow (s-) processes contributed to their origin. The decrease in [Eu/Ba] from a typical r-process value of [Eu/Ba] = 0.7 to 0.3 with increasing [Ba/H] indicates a distinct contribution of the r- and s-processes to the chemical composition of different Cetus stars. For barium, the r-process contribution varies from 100 % to 20 % in different sample stars, with an average value of 50 %. Our abundance analysis indicates that the star formation in the Cetus progenitor ceased after the onset of the main s-process in low- to intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch stars but before SNe Ia played an important role. A distinct evolution scenario is revealed by comparing the abundances in the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy, showing the diversity in the chemical evolution of low-mass dwarf galaxies.

The Pristine survey -- XXII. A serendipitous discovery of an extremely Li-rich very metal-poor giant and a new method of $^6$Li/$^7$Li isotope measurement

We report the serendipitous discovery of a very metal-poor (VMP) Li-rich giant star ($T_{\rm eff}$ = 4690$\pm$80 K, log g = 1.34$\pm$0.13, [Fe/H] = $-2.43\pm$0.07). We analyse the Li I 6103 and 6707 Å lines accounting for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) and correcting for 3D effects using literature data, which yields a lithium abundance $\log\varepsilon_{Li} = 3.42\pm0.07$. Comparing lithium abundances from the two lines, in 1D NLTE we measure the isotope ratio $^6$Li/$^7$Li = 1.64$^{+1.49}_{-1.08}$ %. When correcting for 3D effects, we detect the fragile $^6$Li isotope at $2$-sigma level and the ratio $^6$Li/$^7$Li = 5.65$^{+5.05}_{-2.51}$ %. To our knowledge, this is the first $^6$Li/$^7$Li measurement in an extremely Li-rich VMP star. The Cameron-Fowler mechanism, which is proposed to produce Li-rich stars, does not imply $^6$Li production and is therefore inconsistent with our measurement when applying 3D corrections. We also derive NLTE abundances for 16 elements, most of which show similar abundances to those found in VMP stars. Sodium is an exception: [Na/Fe]$_{\rm NLTE, 1D}$ = 0.07 $\pm 0.03$, which is 0.5 dex higher than what is typical for VMP stars. This star joins the sample of rare Li-rich VMP stars, and we offer a novel way to constrain the source of lithium in such stars through isotope ratio measurements.

Volterra-type inner derivations on Hardy spaces

A classical result of Calkin [Ann. of Math. (2) 42 (1941), pp. 839-873] says that an inner derivation $S\mapsto [T,S] = TS-ST$ maps the algebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert space into the ideal of compact operators if and only if $T$ is a compact perturbation of the multiplication by a scalar. In general, an analogous statement fails for operators on Banach spaces. To complement Calkin's result, we characterize Volterra-type inner derivations on Hardy spaces using generalized area operators and compact intertwining relations for Volterra and composition operators. Further, we characterize the compact intertwining relations for multiplication and composition operators between Hardy and Bergman spaces.

Fourfold anisotropic magnetoresistance of L1$_0$ FePt due to relaxation time anisotropy

Experimental measurements show that the angular dependence of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in L1$_0$ ordered FePt epitaxial films on the current orientation and magnetization direction is a superposition of the corresponding dependences of twofold and fourfold symmetries. The twofold AMR exhibits a strong dependence on the current orientation, whereas the fourfold term only depends on the magnetization direction in the crystal and is independent of the current orientation. First-principles calculations reveal that the fourfold AMR arises from the relaxation time anisotropy due to the variation of the density of states near the Fermi energy under rotation of the magnetization. This relaxation time anisotropy is a universal property in ferromagnetic metals and determines other anisotropic physical properties that are observable in experiment.

The Pristine survey -- XV. A CFHT ESPaDOnS view on the Milky Way halo and disc populations

We present a one-dimensional, local thermodynamic equilibrium (1D-LTE) homogeneous analysis of 132 stars observed at high-resolution with ESPaDOnS. This represents the largest sample observed at high resolution (R$\sim$40,000) from the Pristine survey. This sample is based on the first version of the Pristine catalog and covers the full range of metallicities from [Fe/H]$\sim -3$ to $\sim +0.25$, with nearly half of our sample (58 stars) composed of very metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] $\le$ $-$2). This wide range of metallicities provides the opportunity of a new detailed study of the Milky Way stellar population. Because it includes both dwarf and giant stars, it also enables the analysis of any potential bias induced by the Pristine selection process. Based on Gaia EDR3, the orbital analysis of this Pristine$-$Espadons sample shows that it is composed of 65 halo stars and 67 disc stars. After a general assessment of the sample chemical properties with the $α$-elements Mg and Ca, we focus on the abundance of carbon and the neutron capture elements Ba and Sr. While most of our very metal-poor subsample is carbon normal, we also find that 14 stars out of the 38 stars with [Fe/H] $\leq$ $-$2 and measured carbon abundances turn out to be carbon enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars. We show that these CEMP stars are nearly exclusively (i.e. 12 stars out of 14) in the regime of low luminosity, unevolved, dwarf stars, which we interpret as the consequence of bias of the Pristine filter against C-rich giants. Among the very metal-poor (VMP) stars, we identify 2 CEMP stars with no enhancement in neutron-capture process elements (CEMP-no) and another one enriched in s-process element (CEMP-s). Finally, one VMP star is found with a very low [Sr/Fe] abundance ratio for its metallicity, as expected if it had been accreted from an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy.

The Sagittarius stream in Gaia eDR3 and the origin of the bifurcations

The Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr) is a dissolving galaxy being tidally disrupted by the Milky Way (MW). Its stellar stream still poses serious modelling challenges, which hinders our ability to use it effectively as a probe of the MW gravitational potential. Our goal is to construct the best possible sample of stars with which we can advance our understanding of the Sgr-MW interaction, focusing on the characterisation of the bifurcations. We improve on previous methods based on the use of the wavelet transform to systematically search for the kinematic signature of the Sgr stream in the Gaia data. We refine our selection via the use of a clustering algorithm on the statistical properties of the colour-magnitude diagrams. Our final sample contains > 700k candidate stars, 3x larger than previous samples. We have been able to detect the bifurcation of the stream in both the northern and southern hemispheres, requiring four branches to fully describe this system. We present the detailed proper motion distribution of the trailing arm as a function of Lambda showing the presence of a sharp edge (on the side of the small proper motions) beyond which there are no Sgr stars. We also characterise the correlation between kinematics and distance. The chemical analysis of our sample shows a significant difference between the faint and bright branches. We provide analytical descriptions for the proper motion trends as well as for the sky distribution of the four branches of the stream. We interpret the bifurcations as the misaligned overlap of the material stripped at the antepenultimate pericentre (faint branches) with the stars ejected at the penultimate pericentre (bright branch). The source of this misalignment is still unknown but we argue that models with some internal rotation in the progenitor, at least during the time of stripping of the stars in the faint branches, are worth exploring.

Intrinsic mechanism for anisotropic magnetoresistance and experimental confirmation in Co$_x$Fe$_{1-x}$ single-crystal films

Using first-principles transport calculations, we predict that the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of single-crystal Co$_x$Fe$_{1-x}$ alloys is strongly dependent on the current orientation and alloy concentration. An intrinsic mechanism for AMR is found to arise from the band crossing due to magnetization-dependent symmetry protection. These special $k$-points can be shifted towards or away from the Fermi energy by varying the alloy composition and hence the exchange splitting, thus allowing AMR tunability. The prediction is confirmed by delicate transport measurements, which further reveal a reciprocal relationship of the longitudinal and transverse resistivities along different crystal axes.

Nonvolatile ferroelectric field control of the anomalous Hall effect in BiFeO3/SrRuO3 bilayer

In this work, the BiFeO3 (BFO)/SrRuO3 (SRO) heterostructure was fabricated and the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) was investigated the in BFO/SRO. It is found the nonmonotonic anomalous Hall resistivity behavior in BFO/SRO is originated from the inhomogeneous SRO layer instead of the topological Hall effect. It is surprised that the AHE in BFO/SRO structure can be manipulated by ferroelectric polarization of BFO. Moreover, an inhomogeneous phenomenological model has been applied on those structure. Furthermore, the modification of band structure in SRO under ferroelectric polarization was discussed by first principle calculation. The ferroelectric-manipulated AHE suggests a new pathway to realize nonvolatile, reversible and low energy-consuming voltage-controlled spintronic devices.

Theory of chiral effects in magnetic textures with spin-orbit coupling

We present a theoretical study of two-dimensional spatially and temporally varying magnetic textures in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of both the Rashba and Dresselhaus types. We show that the effective gauge field due to these SOCs, contributes to the dissipative and reactive spin torques in exactly the same way as in electromagnetism. Our calculations reveal that Rashba (Dresselhaus) SOC induces a chiral dissipation in interfacial (bulk) inversion asymmetric magnetic materials. Furthermore, we show that in addition to chiral dissipation $α_c$, these SOCs also produce a chiral renormalization of the gyromagnetic ratio $\tildeγ_c$, and show that the latter is intrinsically linked to the former via a simple relation $α_c = (τ/τ_{\rm ex}) \tildeγ_c$, where $τ_{\rm ex}$ and $τ$ are the exchange time and the electron relaxation time, respectively. Finally, we propose a theoretical scheme based on the Scattering theory to calculate and investigate the properties of damping in chiral magnets. Our findings should in principle provide a guide for material engineering of effects related to chiral dynamics in magnetic textures with SOC.

Finite element method for nonlinear Riesz space fractional diffusion equations on irregular domains

In this paper, we consider two-dimensional Riesz space fractional diffusion equations with nonlinear source term on convex domains. Applying Galerkin finite element method in space and backward difference method in time, we present a fully discrete scheme to solve Riesz space fractional diffusion equations. Our breakthrough is developing an algorithm to form stiffness matrix on unstructured triangular meshes, which can help us to deal with space fractional terms on any convex domain. The stability and convergence of the scheme are also discussed. Numerical examples are given to verify accuracy and stability of our scheme.

Room-temperature spin-orbit torque in NiMnSb

Materials that crystalize in diamond-related lattices, with Si and GaAs as their prime examples, are at the foundation of modern electronics. Simultaneoulsy, the two atomic sites in the unit cell of these crystals form inversion partners which gives rise to relativistic non-equilibrium spin phenomena highly relevant for magnetic memories and other spintronic devices. When the inversion-partner sites are occupied by the same atomic species, electrical current can generate local spin polarization with the same magnitude and opposite sign on the two inversion-partner sites. In CuMnAs, which shares this specific crystal symmetry of the Si lattice, the effect led to the demonstration of electrical switching in an antiferromagnetic memory at room temperature. When the inversion-partner sites are occupied by different atoms, a non-zero global spin-polarization is generated by the applied current which can switch a ferromagnet, as reported at low temperatures in the diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. Here we demonstrate the effect of the global current-induced spin polarization in a counterpart crystal-symmetry material NiMnSb which is a member of the broad family of magnetic Heusler compounds. It is an ordered high-temperature ferromagnetic metal whose other favorable characteristics include high spin-polarization and low damping of magnetization dynamics. Our experiments are performed on strained single-crystal epilayers of NiMnSb grown on InGaAs. By performing all-electrical ferromagnetic resonance measurements in microbars patterned along different crystal axes we detect room-temperature spin-orbit torques generated by effective fields of the Dresselhaus symmetry. The measured magnitude and symmetry of the current-induced torques are consistent with our relativistic density-functional theory calculations.

Synthesis and properties of charge-ordered thallium halide perovskites, CsTl1+0.5Tl3+0.5X3 (X = F, Cl)- theoretical precursors for superconductivity?

Recently CsTlCl3 and CsTlF3 perovskites were theoretically predicted to be potential superconductors if they are optimally doped. The synthesis of these two compounds, together with a complete characterization of the samples are reported. CsTlCl3 is obtained as orange crystals in two different polymorphs: a tetragonal (I4/m) and a cubic (Fm-3m) phase. CsTlF3 is formed as a light brown powder, also as a double cubic perovskite (Fm-3m). In all three CsTlX3 phases Tl1+ and Tl3+ were located in two different crystallographic positions that accommodate their different bond lengths. In CsTlCl3 some Tl vacancies are found in the Tl1+ position. The charge ordering between Tl1+ and Tl3+ was confirmed by x-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectroscopy of CsTlCl3 under high pressure (58 GPa) did not indicate any phase transition to a possible single Tl2+ state. However, the highly insulating material becomes less resistive with increasing high pressure, while undergoing a change in the optical properties, from transparent to deeply opaque red, indicative of a decrease of the band gap. The theoretical design and experimental validation of the existence of CsTlF3 and CsTlCl3 cubic perovskites is the necessary first step in confirming the theoretical prediction of superconductivity in these materials.
