Triplon Bose-Einstein condensation and proximate magnetism in dimerized antiferromagnets

Dimerized quantum magnets provide a useful arena for novel quantum states and phases transitions with the singlet-triplet type of triplon excitations. Here we study the triplon physics and the Bose-Einstein condensation in two isostructural dimerized antiferromagnets $A$Cu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ ($A$ = Hg, Cd). With the systematic measurements, we demonstrate a dimer singlet ground state in HgCu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ with a triplon gap $\sim$ 7.9 K and a triplon Bose-Einstein condensation with an antiferromagnetic order in CdCu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ below 4.4 K. We further adopt the bond-operator technique and show that the elemental replacement preserves the Hamiltonian and allows the study in a unified theoretical framework with tunable interdimer and intradimer interactions on the opposite sides of the quantum critical point. With the peculiar Cu$_2$O$_8$ dimer configuration and effective ferromagnetic interdimer interaction, $A$Cu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ is distinguished from other $S$ = 1/2 dimerized antiferromagnets. Our results represent a global understanding of the magnetic ground states as well as the magnetic transitions in the dimerized magnets of this unusual crystal structure.

Temperature-induced valence-state transition in double perovskite Ba2-xSrxTbIrO6

In this work, a temperature-induced valence-state transition is studied in a narrow composition range of Ba$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$TbIrO$_6$. The valence-state transition involves an electron transfer between Tb and Ir leading to the valence-state change between Tb$^{3+}$/Ir$^{5+}$ and Tb$^{4+}$/Ir$^{4+}$ phases. This first-order transition has a dramatic effect on the lattice, transport properties, and the long-range magnetic order at low temperatures for both Tb and Ir ions. Ir$^{5+}$ ion has an electronic configuration of 5$d^4$ ($J\rm_{eff}$ = 0) which is expected to be nonmagnetic. In contrast, Ir$^{4+}$ ion with a configuration of 5$d^5$($J\rm_{eff}$ = 1/2) favors a long-range magnetic order. For $x$ = 0.1 with Tb$^{3+}$/Ir$^{5+}$ configuration to the lowest temperature (2 K) investigated in this work, a spin-glass behavior is observed around 5 K indicating Ir$^{5+}$ ($J\rm_{eff}$ = 0) ions act as a spacer reducing the magnetic interactions between Tb$^{3+}$ ions. For $x$ = 0.5 with Tb$^{4+}$/Ir$^{4+}$ configuration below the highest temperature 400 K of this work, a long-range antiferromagnetic order at $T\rm_N$ = 40 K is observed highlighting the importance of Ir$^{4+}$ ($J\rm_{eff}$ = 1/2) ions in promoting the long-range magnetic order of both Tb and Ir ions. For 0.2 $\leqslant x \leqslant$ 0.375, a temperature-induced valence-state transition from high-temperature Tb$^{3+}$/Ir$^{5+}$ phase to low-temperature Tb$^{4+}$/Ir$^{4+}$ phase occurs in the temperature range 180 K $\leqslant T \leqslant$ 325 K and the transition temperature increases with $x$. The compositional dependence demonstrates the ability to tune the the valence state for a critical region of $x$ that leads to a concurrent change in magnetism and structure. This tuning ability could be employed with suitable strain in thin films to act as a switch as the magnetism is manipulated.

Na$_5$Co$_{15.5}$Te$_6$O$_{36}$: an $S$ = 1/2 stacked Ising kagome antiferromagnet with a partially disordered ground state

$S$ = 1/2 Ising kagome antiferromagnets (KAFs) are rare in reality. In this work, we report the magnetic ground state and field-induced transitions of an $S$ = 1/2 Ising antiferromagnet with a stacked kagome geometry, Na$_5$Co$_{15.5}$Te$_6$O$_{36}$. Upon cooling, magnetic susceptibility measurement reveals three successive magnetic transitions at $T_1$ = 45.2 K, $T_2$ = 35.4 K, and $T_3 \sim$ 20 K. When the magnetic field is applied along the Ising $c$ axis, a strikingly anomalous initial magnetization lying outside the hysteresis loop is observed below $T_3$. Through the detailed characterizations, the magnetic field $vs$ temperature phase diagram is established. A partially disordered antiferromagnetic state is proposed below $T_1$, which becomes frozen below $T_3$. Na$_5$Co$_{15.5}$Te$_6$O$_{36}$ is therefore a promising candidate for $S$ = 1/2 Ising KAFs, and this unique composite structure may shed light on the exploratory path for $S$ = 1/2 Ising KAFs.

$E_8$ Spectra of Quasi-one-dimensional Antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under Transverse Field

We report $^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on a quasi-1D antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under transverse field along the [010] direction. The scaling behavior of the spin-lattice relaxation rate above the Néel temperatures unveils a 1D quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_c^{1D}\approx 4.7$ T, which is masked by the 3D magnetic order. With the aid of accurate analytical analysis and numerical calculations, we show that the zone center INS spectrum at $H_c^{1D}$ is precisely described by the pattern of the 1D quantum Ising model in a magnetic field, a class of universality described in terms of the exceptional $E_8$ Lie algebra. These excitations keep to be non-diffusive over a certain field range when the system is away from the 1D QCP. Our results provide an unambiguous experimental realization of the massive $E_8$ phase in the compound, and open new experimental route for exploring the dynamics of quantum integrable systems as well as physics beyond integrability.

Absence of long-range order in an $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$

Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a random distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.37 K, which is primarily ascribed to the inherent structural disorder. A cluster spin-glass state is proposed in view of the frequency dependence of the peak position in the ac susceptibility. In addition, the temperature and field dependence of thermal conductivity indicates rather strong spin fluctuations which is probably due to the phase competition.

Magnetism study on a frustration-free spatially anisotropic $S$ = 1 square lattice antiferromagnet Ni[SC(NH$_2$)$_2$]$_6$Br$_2$

Magnetism of the $S$ = 1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the spatially anisotropic square lattice has been scarcely explored. Here we report a study of the magnetism, specific heat, and thermal conductivity on Ni[SC(NH$_2$)$_2$]$_6$Br$_2$ (DHN) single crystals. Ni$^{2+}$ ions feature an $S$ = 1 rectangular lattice in the $bc$ plane, which can be viewed as an unfrustrated spatially anisotropic square lattice. A long-range antiferromagnetic order is developed at $T \rm_N =$ 2.23 K. Below $T\rm_N$, an upturn is observed in the $b$-axis magnetic susceptibility and the resultant minimum might be an indication for the $XY$ anisotropy in the ordered state. A gapped spin-wave dispersion is confirmed from the temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat. Anisotropic temperature-field phase diagrams are mapped out and possible magnetic structures are proposed.

Heat switch effect in an antiferromagnetic insulator Co$_3$V$_2$O$_8$

We report a heat switch effect in single crystals of an antiferromagnet Co$_3$V$_2$O$_8$, that is, the thermal conductivity ($κ$) can be changed with magnetic field in an extremely large scale. Due to successive magnetic phase transitions at 12--6 K, the zero-field $κ(T)$ displays a deep minimum at 6.7 K and rather small magnitude at low temperatures. Both the temperature and field dependencies of $κ$ demonstrate that the phonons are strongly scattered at the regime of magnetic phase transitions. Magnetic field can suppress magnetic scattering effect and significantly recover the phonon thermal conductivity. In particular, a 14 T field along the $a$ axis increases the $κ$ at 7.5 K up to 100 times. For $H \parallel c$, the magnitude of $κ$ can be suppressed down to $\sim$ 8% at some field-induced transition and can be enhanced up to 20 times at 14 T. The present results demonstrate that it is possible to design a kind of heat switch in the family of magnetic materials.

Spin Fluctuations and Frustrated Magnetism in the Multiferroic FeVO$_4$

We report $^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on single crystals of the multiferroic material FeVO$_4$. The high-temperature Knight shift shows Curie-Weiss behavior, $^{51}K = a/(T + θ)$, with a large Weiss constant $θ\approx$ 116 K. However, the $^{51}$V spectrum shows no ordering near these temperatures, splitting instead into two peaks below 65 K, which suggests only short-ranged magnetic order on the NMR time scale. Two magnetic transitions are identified from peaks in the spin-lattice relaxation rate, $1/^{51}T_1$, at temperatures $T_{N1} \approx$ 19 K and $T_{N2} \approx$ 13 K, which are lower than the estimates obtained from polycrystalline samples. In the low-temperature incommensurate spiral state, the maximum ordered moment is estimated as 1.95$μ_B$/Fe, or 1/3 of the local moment. Strong low-energy spin fluctuations are also indicated by the unconventional power-law temperature dependence $1/^{51}T_1 \propto T^2$. The large Weiss constant, short-range magnetic correlations far above $T_{N1}$, small ordered moment, significant low-energy spin fluctuations, and incommensurate ordered phases all provide explicit evidence for strong magnetic frustration in FeVO$_4$.

Heat transport of quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet BaCo_2V_2O_8 in the longitudinal and transverse fields

The very-low-temperature thermal conductivity (κ) is studied for BaCo_2V_2O_8, a quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet exhibiting an unusual magnetic-field-induced order-to-disorder transition. The nearly isotropic transport in the longitudinal field indicates that the magnetic excitations scatter phonons rather than conduct heat. The field dependence of κshows a sudden drop at \sim 4 T, where the system unndergoes the transition from the Néel order to the incommensurate state. Another dip at lower field of \sim 3 T indicates an unknown magnetic transition, which is likely due to the spin-flop transition. Moreover, the κ(H) in the transverse field shows a very deep valley-like feature, which moves slightly to higher field and becomes sharper upon lowering the temperature. This indicates a magnetic transition induced by the transverse field, which however is not predicted by the present theories for this low-dimensional spin system.
