Correlation Femtoscopy for Studying Eta Meson Production Mechanism

The high statistics data from the pp -> ppeta reaction measurement, delivered by the COSY-11 collaboration, are now being evaluated using the correlation femtoscopy technique. This method is based on the relative momentum correlations of two emitted protons and may permit determination of the size of the reaction volume. For the very first time, we apply an intensity interferometry technique to study the mechanism of the meson production via the nucleon-nucleon interaction close to the kinematical threshold. We invented a method to determine correlation function for the ppeta system free from the physical multi-pion production background. We show the comparison of experimental results with theoretical predictions and appraise the accuracy achieved for the determination of the size of the emission source.

Study of the 3He-eta system in d-p collisions at COSY-11

We present preliminary results from dp --> 3He X (X=pi0,eta) measurements near the eta production threshold. The data were taken during a slow ramping of the COSY internal deuteron beam scattered on a proton target. The 3He ejectiles were registered with the COSY-11 detection setup. The ongoing data analysis should deliver high precision data for the dp --> 3He eta total and differential cross sections for the excess energies in the range from threshold up to 9 MeV. The preliminary excitation function for the reaction dp --> 3He pi0 does not show any structure which could originate from the decay of 3He-eta bound state. We present also a threshold excitation curve for the dp --> 3He X channel. Contrary to corresponding results from SATURNE we see no cusp in the vicinity of the eta threshold.

A method to disentangle single- and multi-meson production in missing mass spectra from quasi-free pn --> pn X reactions

The separation of contributions from multi- and single-meson production in the missing mass spectrum of the quasi-free pn --> pnX reaction constitutes a~challenging task when the reaction is studied close to threshold. This is especially true if the resolution of the mass determination is comparable with the excess energy and if the investigated signal appears close to the kinematical limit. In this article we outline a method which permits the extraction of the signal originating from the creation of a single meson without the necessity of conducting model-dependent simulations. For the pd --> pnXp(spectator) reactions, the method allows one to combine events corresponding to multi-meson production at various excess energies with respect to the pn --> pn meson process, and hence leads to an increase of the statistics needed for the determination of the shape of the multi-meson background. As an example of the application of the method, we demonstrate that the evaluation of the data from the pd --> pnXp(sp) process according to the described technique enables one to extract a signal of the pn --> pn eta reaction whose shape is consistent with expectations, supporting the correctness and usefulness of the method introduced.

Nanoscopic processes of Current Induced Switching in thin tunnel junctions

In magnetic nanostructures one usually uses a magnetic field to commute between two resistance (R) states. A less common but technologically more interesting alternative to achieve R-switching is to use an electrical current, preferably of low intensity. Such Current Induced Switching (CIS) was recently observed in thin magnetic tunnel junctions, and attributed to electromigration of atoms into/out of the insulator. Here we study the Current Induced Switching, electrical resistance, and magnetoresistance of thin MnIr/CoFe/AlO$_x$/CoFe tunnel junctions. The CIS effect at room temperature amounts to 6.9% R-change between the high and low states and is attributed to nanostructural rearrangements of metallic ions in the electrode/barrier interfaces. After switching to the low R-state some electro-migrated ions return to their initial sites through two different energy channels. A low (high) energy barrier of $\sim$0.13 eV ($\sim$0.85 eV) was estimated. Ionic electromigration then occurs through two microscopic processes associated with different types of ions sites/defects. Measurements under an external magnetic field showed an additional intermediate R-state due to the simultaneous conjugation of the MR (magnetic) and CIS (structural) effects.

An Epsilon-uniform Finite Element Method for Singularly Perturbed Boundary Value Problems

This work develops an epsilon-uniform finite element method for singularly perturbed boundary value problems. A surprising and remarkable observation is illustrated: By moving one node arbitrarily in between its adjacent nodes, the new finite element solution always intersect with original one at fixed point. Using this fact, an effective epsilon-uniform approximation out of boundary is proposed by adding one point only in the grid that contains boundary layer. The thickness of boundary layer is not necessary to be known from priori estimation. Numerical results are carried out and compared to Shishkin mesh for demonstration purpose.

Tau lepton physics at LEP

The talk covers three contributions on (i) the final measurement of branching ratios and spectral functions of t decays using the full LEP-I data from ALEPH, (ii) a preliminary measurement of the t hadronic branching ratios from DELPHI and (iii) a measurement of the strange spectral function in hadronic t decays from OPAL. These measurements are discussed and the relevant physics topics are briefly reviewed.

Kaon pair production close to threshold

The total cross section of the reaction pp->ppK+K- has been measured at excess energies Q=10 MeV and 28 MeV with the magnetic spectrometer COSY-11. The new data show a significant enhancement of the total cross section compared to pure phase space expectations or calculations within a one boson exchange model. In addition, we present invariant mass spectra of two particle subsystems. While the K+K- system is rather constant for different invariant masses, there is an enhancement in the pK- system towards lower masses which could at least be partially connected to the influence of the Lambda(1405) resonance.

The Physics of Hadronic Tau Decays

Hadronic tau decays represent a clean laboratory for the precise study of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Observables (sum rules) based on the spectral functions of hadronic tau decays can be related to QCD quark-level calculations to determine fundamental quantities like the strong coupling constant, parameters of the chiral Lagrangian, |V_us|, the mass of the strange quark, and to simultaneously test the concept of quark-hadron duality. Using the best available measurements and a revisited analysis of the theoretical framework, the value alpha_s(m_tau) = 0.345 +- 0.004[exp] +- 0.009[theo] is obtained. Taken together with the determination of alpha_s(m_Z) from the global electroweak fit, this result leads to the most accurate test of asymptotic freedom: the value of the logarithmic slope of 1/alpha_s(s) is found to agree with QCD at a precision of 4%. In another approach, the tau spectral functions can be used to determine hadronic quantities that, due to the nonperturbative nature of long-distance QCD, cannot be computed from first principles. An example for this is the contribution from hadronic vacuum polarization to loop-dominated processes like the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This article reviews the measurements of nonstrange and strange tau spectral functions and their phenomenological applications.

EMMA - A New Underground Cosmic-Ray Experiment

A new type of cosmic-ray experiment is under construction in the Pyhäsalmi mine in the underground laboratory of the University of Oulu, Finland. It aims to study the composition of cosmic rays at and above the knee region. The experiment, called EMMA, will cover approximately 150 square-metres of detector area. The array is capable of measuring the multiplicity and the lateral distribution of underground muons, and the arrival direction of the air shower. The full-size detector is expected to run by the end of 2007.

Dark Matter with (very) heavy SUSY scalars at ILC

In this paper, six SUSY scenarios with heavy sfermions, mainly based on theoretical arguments and on experimental indications for new physics, are defined. These scenarios, consistent with the amount of dark matter (DM) measured by WMAP, are then analysed in detail providing pertinent examples of the potential of ILC. It is shown that in most cases ILC, with its high precision based on the chargino analysis and in spite of an incomplete coverage of the gaugino and slepton mass spectrum, can predict the amount of DM in our universe with an accuracy which matches the WMAP results.

Electromigration in thin tunnel junctions with ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic: nanoconstrictions, local heating, and direct and wind forces

Current Induced Resistance Switching (CIS) was recently observed in thin tunnel junctions with ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes \emph{i.e} FM/I/FM. This effect was attributed to electromigration of metallic atoms in nanoconstrictions in the insulating barrier (I). Here we study how the CIS effect is influenced by a thin non-magnetic (NM) Ta layer, deposited just below the AlO$_x$ insulating barrier in tunnel junctions of the type FM/NM/I/FM (FM=CoFe). Enhanced resistance switching occurs with increasing maximum applied current ($\Imax$), until a plateau of constant CIS is reached for $\Imax\sim65$ mA (CIS$\sim$60%) and above. However, such high electrical currents also lead to a large ($\sim$9%) irreversible resistance decrease, indicating barrier degradation. Anomalous voltage-current characteristics with negative derivative were also observed near $\pm\Imax$ and this effect is here attributed to heating in the tunnel junction. One observes that the current direction for which resistance switches in FM/NM/I/FM (clockwise) is opposite to that of FM/I/FM tunnel junctions (anti-clockwise). This effect will be discussed in terms of a competition between the electromigration contributions due to the so called direct and wind forces. It will be shown that the direct force is likely to dominate electromigration in the Ta (NM) layers, while the wind contribution likely dominates in the CoFe (FM) layers.

Experimental Implications for a Linear Collider of the SUSY Dark Matter Scenario

This paper presents the detection issues for the lightest slepton \tildeτ_1 at a future e^+e^- TeV collider given the dark matter constraints set on the SUSY mass spectrum by the WMAP results. It intends to illustrate the importance of an optimal detection of energetic electrons in the very forward region for an efficient rejection of the γγbackground. The TESLA parameters have been used in the case of head-on collisions and in the case of a 10, mrad half crossing angle.

Updated Estimate of the Muon Magnetic Moment Using Revised Results from e+e- Annihilation

A new evaluation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon magnetic moment is presented. We take into account the reanalysis of the low-energy e+e- annihilation cross section into hadrons by the CMD-2 Collaboration. The agreement between e+e- and tau spectral functions in the pi pi channel is found to be much improved. Nevertheless, significant discrepancies remain in the center-of-mass energy range between 0.85 and 1.0 GeV, so that we refrain from averaging the two data sets. The values found for the lowest-order hadronic vacuum polarization contributions are a_mu[had,LO] = (696.3 +- 6.2[exp] +- 3.6[rad])e-10 (e+e- -based) and a_mu[had,LO] = (711.0 +- 5.0[exp] +- 0.8[rad] +- 2.8[SU2])e-10 (tau-based), where the errors have been separated according to their sources: experimental, missing radiative corrections in e+e- data, and isospin breaking. The corresponding Standard Model predictions for the muon magnetic anomaly read a_mu = (11,659,180.9 +- 7.2[had] +- 3.5[LBL] +- 0.4[QED+EW])e-10 (e+e- -based) and a_mu = (11,659,195.6 +- 5.8[had] +- 3.5[LBL] +- 0.4[QED+EW])e-10 (tau-based), where the errors account for the hadronic, light-by-light (LBL) scattering and electroweak contributions. The deviations from the measurement at BNL are found to be (22.1 +- 7.2 +- 3.5 +- 8.0)e-10 (1.9 sigma) and (7.4 +- 5.8 +- 3.5 +- 8.0)e-10 (0.7 sigma) for the e+e- and tau-based estimates, respectively, where the second error is from the LBL contribution and the third one from the BNL measurement.

Experimental f-value and isotopic structure for the Ni I line blended with [OI] at 6300A

We have measured the oscillator strength of the Ni I line at 6300.34 Å, which is known to be blended with the forbidden [O I] $λ$6300 line, used for determination of the oxygen abundance in cool stars. We give also wavelengths of the two isotopic line components of $^{58}$Ni and $^{60}$Ni derived from the asymmetric laboratory line profile. These two line components of Ni I have to be considered when calculating a line profile of the 6300 Å feature observed in stellar and solar spectra. We also discuss the labelling of the energy levels involved in the Ni I line, as level mixing makes the theoretical predictions uncertain.

Confronting Spectral Functions from e+e- Annihilation and tau Decays: Consequences for the Muon Magnetic Moment

Vacuum polarization integrals involve the vector spectral functions which can be experimentally determined from two sources: (i) e+e- annihilation cross sections and (ii) hadronic tau decays. Recently results with comparable precision have become available from CMD-2 on one side, and ALEPH, CLEO and OPAL on the other. The comparison of the respective spectral functions involves a correction from isospin-breaking effects which is evaluated. After correction it is found that the dominant 2pi spectral functions do not agree within experimental and theoretical uncertainties. Some problems are also found for the 4pi spectral functions where different experiments do not agree well with each other. The consequences of these discrepancies for vacuum polarization calculations are presented, with emphasis on the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The work includes a complete reevaluation of all exclusive cross sections, taking into account the most recent data that became available in particular from the Novosibirsk experiments and applying corrections for the missing radiative corrections. The values found for the lowest-order hadronic vacuum polarization contributions are a_mu[had,LO] = (684.7 +- 6.0[exp] +- 3.6[rad])x10^(-10) [e^+e^- -based], and a_mu[had,LO] = (709.0 +- 5.1[exp] +- 1.2[rad] +- 2.8[SU(2)])x10^(-10) [tau-based]. The errors have been separated according to their sources: experimental, radiative corrections in e+e- data, and isospin-breaking. We observe deviations of the full SM prediction with the recent BNL measurement at the 3.0 (e+e-) and 0.9 (tau) sigma level, when adding experimental and theoretical errors in quadrature.

AE Aquarii: how CVs descend from supersoft binaries

AE Aquarii is a propeller system. It has the shortest spin period among cataclysmic variables, and this is increasing on a 10^7 yr timescale. Its UV spectrum shows very strong carbon depletion vs nitrogen and its secondary mass indicates a star far from the zero-age main sequence. We show that these properties strongly suggest that AE Aqr has descended from a supersoft X-ray binary. We calculate the evolution of systems descending through this channel, and show that many of them end as AM CVn systems. The short spindown timescale of AE Aqr requires a high birthrate for such systems, implying that a substantial fraction of cataclysmic variables must have formed in this way. A simple estimate suggests that this fraction could be of order one-third of current CVs. We emphasize the importance of measurements of the C/N abundance ratio in CVs, particularly via the CIV1550 / NV1238 ratio, in determining how large the observed fraction is.
