An improved upper bound for the Waring rank of the determinant

The Waring rank of the generic $d \times d$ determinant is bounded above by $d \cdot d!$. This improves previous upper bounds, which were of the form an exponential times the factorial. Our upper bound comes from an explicit power sum decomposition. We describe some of the symmetries of the decomposition and set-theoretic defining equations for the terms of the decomposition.

A bound for the Waring rank of the determinant via syzygies

We show that the Waring rank of the $3 \times 3$ determinant, previously known to be between $14$ and $18$, is at least $15$. We use syzygies of the apolar ideal, which have not been used in this way before. Additionally, we show that the cactus rank of the $3 \times 3$ permanent is at least $14$.

Sufficient conditions for Strassen's additivity conjecture

We give a sufficient condition for the strong symmetric version of Strassen's additivity conjecture: the Waring rank of a sum of forms in independent variables is the sum of their ranks, and every Waring decomposition of the sum is a sum of decompositions of the summands. We give additional sufficient criteria for the additivity of Waring ranks and a sufficient criterion for additivity of cactus ranks and decompositions.

On the locus of points of high rank

Given a closed subvariety X in a projective space, the rank with respect to X of a point p in this projective space is the least integer r such that p lies in the linear span of some r points of X. Let W_k be the closure of the set of points of rank with respect to X equal to k. For small values of k such loci are called secant varieties. This article studies the loci W_k for values of k larger than the generic rank. We show they are nested, we bound their dimensions, and we estimate the maximal possible rank with respect to X in special cases, including when X is a homogeneous space or a curve. The theory is illustrated by numerous examples, including Veronese varieties, the Segre product of dimensions (1,3,3), and curves. An intermediate result provides a lower bound on the dimension of any GL_n orbit of a homogeneous form.

Some examples of forms of high rank

We describe some forms with greater Waring rank than previous examples. In $3$ variables we give forms of odd degree with strictly greater rank than the ranks of monomials, the previously highest known rank. This narrows the possible range of values of the maximum Waring rank of forms in $3$ variables. In $4$ variables we give forms of odd degree with strictly greater than generic rank. In degrees greater than or equal to $5$ these are the first examples showing that there exist forms with Waring rank strictly greater than the generic value.

Product Ranks of the $3\times 3$ Determinant and Permanent

We show that the product rank of the $3\times 3$ determinant is $5$, and the product rank of the $3\times 3$ permanent is $4$. As a corollary, we obtain that the tensor ranks of the $3 \times 3$ determinant and permanent are $5$ and $4$, respectively. We show moreover that the border product rank of the $n \times n$ permanent is larger than $n$ for any $n\geq 3$.

Apolarity and direct sum decomposability of polynomials

A polynomial is a direct sum if it can be written as a sum of two non-zero polynomials in some distinct sets of variables, up to a linear change of variables. We analyze criteria for a homogeneous polynomial to be decomposable as a direct sum, in terms of the apolar ideal of the polynomial. We prove that the apolar ideal of a polynomial of degree $d$ strictly depending on all variables has a minimal generator of degree $d$ if and only if it is a limit of direct sums.

Decompositions of ideals of minors meeting a submatrix

We compute the primary decomposition of certain ideals generated by subsets of minors in a generic matrix or in a generic symmetric matrix, or subsets of Pfaffians in a generic skew-symmetric matrix. Specifically, the ideals we consider are generated by minors that have at least some given number of rows and columns in certain submatrices.

The monotone secant conjecture in the real Schubert calculus

The monotone secant conjecture posits a rich class of polynomial systems, all of whose solutions are real. These systems come from the Schubert calculus on flag manifolds, and the monotone secant conjecture is a compelling generalization of the Shapiro conjecture for Grassmannians (Theorem of Mukhin, Tarasov, and Varchenko). We present some theoretical evidence for this conjecture, as well as computational evidence obtained by 1.9 teraHertz-years of computing, and we discuss some of the phenomena we observed in our data.

Lower bound for ranks of invariant forms

We give a lower bound for the Waring rank and cactus rank of forms that are invariant under an action of a connected algebraic group. We use this to improve the Ranestad--Schreyer--Shafiei lower bounds for the Waring ranks and cactus ranks of determinants of generic matrices, Pfaffians of generic skew-symmetric matrices, and determinants of generic symmetric matrices.

On Maximum, Typical and Generic Ranks

We show that for several notions of rank including tensor rank, Waring rank, and generalized rank with respect to a projective variety, the maximum value of rank is at most twice the generic rank. We show that over the real numbers, the maximum value of the real rank is at most twice the smallest typical rank, which is equal to the (complex) generic rank.

Geometric lower bounds for generalized ranks

We revisit a geometric lower bound for Waring rank of polynomials (symmetric rank of symmetric tensors) of Landsberg and Teitler and generalize it to a lower bound for rank with respect to arbitrary varieties, improving the bound given by the "non-Abelian" catalecticants recently introduced by Landsberg and Ottaviani. This is applied to give lower bounds for ranks of multihomogeneous polynomials (partially symmetric tensors); a special case is the simultaneous Waring decomposition problem for a linear system of polynomials. We generalize the classical Apolarity Lemma to multihomogeneous polynomials and give some more general statements. Finally we revisit the lower bound of Ranestad and Schreyer, and again generalize it to multihomogeneous polynomials and some more general settings.

Maximum Waring ranks of monomials

We show that monomials and sums of pairwise coprime monomials in four or more variables have Waring rank less than the generic rank, with a short list of exceptions. We asymptotically compare their ranks with the generic rank.

Arithmetic toric varieties

We study toric varieties over a field k that split in a Galois extension K/k using Galois cohomology with coefficients in the toric automorphism group. Part of this Galois cohomology fits into an exact sequence induced by the presentation of the class group of the toric variety. This perspective helps to compute the Galois cohomology, particularly for cyclic Galois groups. We use Galois cohomology to classify k-forms of projective spaces when K/k is cyclic, and we also study k-forms of surfaces.

Software for multiplier ideals

We describe a new software package for computing multiplier ideals in certain cases, including monomial ideals, monomial curves, generic determinantal ideals, and hyperplane arrangements. In these cases we take advantage of combinatorial formulas for multiplier ideals given by results of Howald, Thompson, and Johnson. The package uses Normaliz. It is available as a library for Macaulay2.
