Homotopy types of fine curve and fine arc complexes

The fine curve complex of a surface is a simplicial complex whose vertices are essential simple closed curves and whose $k$-simplices are collections of $k+1$ disjoint curves. We prove that the fine curve complex is homotopy equivalent to the curve complex. We also prove that the fine arc complex is contractible.

Representation stability for ordered Hurwitz spaces

In this paper, we study the topology of ordered Hurwitz space. These are moduli spaces of branched covers with a choice of ordering on the branched points. Answering a question of Ellenberg, we prove that the homology of ordered Hurwitz spaces exhibit representation stability.

Top-degree rational cohomology in the symplectic group of a number ring

Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $R = \mathcal{O}_K$. We show that if $R$ is not a principal ideal domain, then the symplectic group $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(R)$ has non-trivial rational cohomology in its virtual cohomological dimension. This demonstrates a sharp contrast to the situation where $R$ is Euclidean. To prove our result, we study the symplectic Steinberg module, i.e. the top-dimensional homology group of the spherical building associated to $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(K)$. We show that this module is not generated by integral apartment classes.

Secondary Homological Stability for Unordered Configuration Spaces

Secondary homological stability is a recently discovered stability pattern for the homology of a sequence of spaces exhibiting homological stability in a range where homological stability does not hold. We prove secondary homological stability for the homology of the unordered configuration spaces of a connected manifold. The main difficulty is the case that the manifold is closed because there are no obvious maps inducing stability and the homology eventually is periodic instead of stable. We resolve this issue by constructing a new chain-level stabilization map for configuration spaces.
