Counting Strict Gridlock on Graphs

Graph colorings have been of interest to mathematicians for a long time, but relatively recently, social scientists have also found them to be interesting tools for studying group behavior. In the last 20 years, scientists have begun to study how coloring problems can be solved by groups of individuals on a graph, which has led to new insights into network structure, group dynamics, and individual human behavior. Despite this newfound utility, the exact nature of these distributed coloring problems is not well-understood, and established mathematical tools like the chromatic polynomial miss the unique challenges that arise in these social problem-solving situations with limited information. In this paper, we provide a new framework for understanding these distributed problems by defining a new kind of graph coloring with particular relevance to consensus formation on networks, in which all vertices are trying to agree on a common color. These strict gridlock colorings represent roadblocks to consensus where the group will not reach a uniform coloring using natural update processes. We describe a recurrence relation that provides an algorithm for counting these gridlocked colorings, which establishes a mathematical measure of how much a given graph hinders consensus in a group.

Khovanov homology and Lagrangian cobordisms

We provide a partial answer to a question of Ekholm, Honda, and Kálmán about the relationship between Khovanov homology and decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms. We also utilize previously defined filtered invariants to give obstructions to decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms from Khovanov homology.

Spectral GRID invariants and Lagrangian cobordisms

We prove that the filtered GRID invariants of Legendrian links in link Floer homology, and consequently their associated invariants in the spectral sequence, obstruct decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms in the symplectization of the standard contact structure on $\mathbb{R}^3$, strengthening a result by Baldwin, Lidman, and the fifth author.

On the invariance of the Dowlin spectral sequence

Given a link $L$, Dowlin constructed a filtered complex inducing a spectral sequence with $E_2$-page isomorphic to the Khovanov homology $\overline{Kh}(L)$ and $E_\infty$-page isomorphic to the knot Floer homology $\widehat{HFK}(m(L))$ of the mirror of the link. In this paper, we prove that the $E_k$-page of this spectral sequence is also a link invariant, for $k\ge 3$.

Khovanov homology for links in thickened multipunctured disks

We define a variant of Khovanov homology for links in thickened disks with multiple punctures. This theory is distinct from the one previously defined by Asaeda, Przytycki, and Sikora, but is related to it by a spectral sequence. Additionally, we show that there are spectral sequences induced by embeddings of thickened surfaces, which recover the spectral sequence from annular Khovanov homology to Khovanov homology as a special case.
