Modified scattering for the cubic Schrödinger equation on product spaces and applications

We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation posed on the spatial domain $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{T}^d$. We prove modified scattering and construct modified wave operators for small initial and final data respectively ($1\leq d\leq 4)$. The key novelty comes from the fact that the modified asymptotic dynamics are dictated by the resonant system of this equation, which sustains interesting dynamics when $d\geq 2$. As a consequence, we obtain global solutions to the defocusing and focusing problems on $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{T}^d$ (for any $d\geq 2$) with infinitely growing high Sobolev norms $H^s$.

Asymptotic behavior of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with harmonic trapping

We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with harmonic trapping on $\mathbb{R}^D$ ($1\leq D\leq 5$). In the case when all but one directions are trapped (a.k.a "cigar-shaped" trap), following the approach of Hani-Pausader-Tzvetkov-Visciglia, we prove modified scattering and construct modified wave operators for small initial and final data respectively. The asymptotic behavior turns out to be a rather vigorous departure from linear scattering and is dictated by the resonant system of the NLS equation with full trapping on $\mathbb{R}^{D-1}$. In the physical dimension $D=3$, this system turns out to be exactly the (CR) equation derived and studied by Faou-Germain-Hani. The special dynamics of the latter equation, combined with the above modified scattering results, allow to justify and extend some physical approximations in the theory of Bose-Einstein condensates in cigar-shaped traps.

The weakly nonlinear large box limit of the 2D cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation set on a two dimensional box of size $L$ with periodic boundary conditions. By taking the large box limit $L \to \infty$ in the weakly nonlinear regime (characterized by smallness in the critical space), we derive a new equation set on $\R^2$ that approximates the dynamics of the frequency modes. This nonlinear equation turns out to be Hamiltonian and enjoys interesting symmetries, such as its invariance under Fourier transform, as well as several families of explicit solutions. A large part of this work is devoted to a rigorous approximation result that allows to project the long-time dynamics of the limit equation into that of the cubic NLS equation on a box of finite size.

Scattering for the Zakharov system in 3 dimensions

We prove global existence and scattering for small localized solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Zakharov system in 3 space dimensions. The wave component is shown to decay pointwise at the optimal rate of t^{-1}, whereas the Schrödinger component decays almost at a rate of t^{-7/6}.

Nonlinear resonances with a potential: Multilinear estimates and an application to NLS

This paper considers the question of global in time existence and asymptotic behavior of small-data solutions of nonlinear dispersive equations with a real potential $V$. The main concern is treating nonlinearities whose degree is low enough as to preclude the simple use of classical energy methods and decay estimates. In their place, we present a systematic approach that adapts the space-time resonance method to the non-Euclidean setting using the spectral theory of the Schroedinger operator $-Δ+V$. We start by developing tools of independent interest, namely multilinear analysis (Coifman-Meyer type theorems) in the framework of the corresponding distorted Fourier transform. As a first application, this is then used to prove global existence and scattering for a quadratic Schroedinger equation.

Long-time instability and unbounded Sobolev orbits for some periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We study the energy cascade problematic for some nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the torus $\T^2$ in terms of the growth of Sobolev norms. We define the notion of long-time strong instability and establish its connection to the existence of unbounded Sobolev orbits. This connection is then explored for a family of cubic Schrödinger nonlinearities that are equal or closely related to the standard polynomial one $|u|^2u$. Most notably, we prove the existence of unbounded Sobolev orbits for a family of Hamiltonian cubic nonlinearities that includes the resonant cubic NLS equation (a.k.a. the first Birkhoff normal form).

Global well-posedness of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on compact manifolds without boundary

We consider the cubic non-linear Schrödinger equation on general closed (compact without boundary) Riemannian surfaces. The problem is known to be locally well-posed in $H^s(M)$ for $s>1/2$. Global well-posedness for $s\geq 1$ follows easily from conservation of energy and standard arguments. In this work, we extend the range of global well-posedness to $s>2/3$. This generalizes, without any loss in regularity, a similar result on $\T^2$. The proof relies on the I-method of Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka, and Tao, a semi-classical bilinear Strichartz estimate proved by the author, and spectral localization estimates for products of eigenfunctions, which is essential to develop multilinear spectral analysis on general compact manifolds.

A bilinear oscillatory integral estimate and bilinear refinements to Strichartz estimates on closed manifolds

We prove a bilinear $L^2(\R^d) \times L^2(\R^d) \to L^2(\R^{d+1})$ estimate for a pair of oscillatory integral operators with different asymptotic parameters and phase functions satisfying a transversality condition. This is then used to prove a bilinear refinement to Strichartz estimates on closed manifolds, similar to that on $\R^d$, but at a relevant semi-classical scale. These estimates will be employed elsewhere to prove global well-posedness below $H^1$ for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on closed surfaces.
