Bose-Einstein Condensate dark matter with logarithmic nonlinearity

If dark matter is composed of massive bosons, a Bose-Einstein Condensation process must have occurred during the cosmological evolution. Therefore, galactic dark matter may be in a form of a self-gravitating condensate, in the presence of self-interactions. We consider the possibility that the self-interacting potential of the condensate dark matter is of the logarithmic form. In order to describe the condensate dark matter we use the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a logarithmic nonlinearity, and the Thomas-Fermi approximation. With the use of the hydrodynamic representation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we obtain the equation of state of the condensate, which has the form of the ideal gas equation of state, with the pressure proportional to the dark matter density. The basic equation describing the density distribution of the static condensate is derived, and its solution is obtained in the form of a series solution, constructed with the help of the Adomian Decomposition Method. To test the model we consider the properties of the galactic rotation curves in the logarithmic Bose-Einstein Condensate dark matter scenario, by using a sample from the Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves (SPARC) data. The fit of the theoretical predictions of the rotation curves with the observational data indicate that the logarithmic Bose-Einstein Condensate dark matter model gives an acceptable description of the SPARC data, and thus it may be considered as a possible candidate for the in depth understanding of the dark matter properties.

The first variation of the matter energy-momentum tensor with respect to the metric, and its implications on modified gravity theories

The first order variation of the matter energy-momentum tensor $T_{μν}$ with respect to the metric tensor $g^{αβ}$ plays an important role in modified gravity theories with geometry-matter coupling, and in particular in the $f(R,T)$ modified gravity theory. We obtain the expression of the variation $δT_{μν}/δg^{αβ}$ for the baryonic matter described by an equation given in a parametric form, with the basic thermodynamic variables represented by the particle number density, and by the specific entropy, respectively. The first variation of the matter energy-momentum tensor turns out to be independent on the matter Lagrangian, and can be expressed in terms of the pressure, the energy-momentum tensor itself, and the matter fluid four-velocity. We apply the obtained results for the case of the $f(R,T)$ gravity theory, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, and $T$ is the trace of the matter energy-momentum tensor, which thus becomes a unique theory, also independent on the choice of the matter Lagrangian. A simple cosmological model, in which the Hilbert-Einstein Lagrangian is generalized through the addition of a term proportional to $T^n$ is considered in detail, and it is shown that it gives a very good description of the observational values of the Hubble parameter up to a redshift of $z\approx 2.5$.

Compact stellar structures in Weyl geometric gravity

We consider the structure and physical properties of specific classes of neutron, quark, and Bose-Einstein Condensate stars in the conformally invariant Weyl geometric gravity theory. The basic theory is derived from the simplest conformally invariant action, constructed, in Weyl geometry, from the square of the Weyl scalar, the strength of the Weyl vector, and a matter term, respectively. The action is linearized in the Weyl scalar by introducing an auxiliary scalar field. To keep the theory conformally invariant the trace condition is imposed on the matter energy-momentum tensor. The field equations are derived by varying the action with respect to the metric tensor, Weyl vector field and scalar field. By adopting a static spherically symmetric interior geometry, we obtain the field equations, describing the structure and properties of stellar objects in Weyl geometric gravity. The solutions of the field equations are obtained numerically, for different equations of state of the neutron and quark matter. More specifically, constant density stellar models, and models described by the stiff fluid, radiation fluid, quark bag model, and Bose-Einstein Condensate equations of state are explicitly constructed numerically in both general relativity and Weyl geometric gravity, thus allowing an in depth comparison between the predictions of these two gravitational theories. As a general result it turns out that for all the considered equations of state, Weyl geometric gravity stars are more massive than their general relativistic counterparts. As a possible astrophysical application of the obtained results we suggest that the recently observed neutron stars, with masses in the range of 2$M_{\odot}$ and 3$M_{\odot}$, respectively, could be in fact conformally invariant Weyl geometric neutron or quark stars.

Cosmology of the non-local Proca theory

In this paper, we will consider cosmological implications of the Maxwell theory coupled to a non-local $U(1)$-symmetric term. It is well-known that the theory in flat space time, reduces to the Proca theory. However, it will be shown that in curved space time the resulting theory will differ from the coupled Einstein-Proca system. The cosmological perturbations on top of the de Sitter space-time is also considered and the dynamics of separate modes will be investigated in detail. Anisotropic cosmology of the model is also investigated and we will show that the behavior of the universe at late time satisfies the observational data and the model predicts an isotropic universe.

Compact stars in the Einstein dark energy model

We investigate the properties of high density compact objects in a vector type theory, inspired by Einstein's 1919 theory of elementary particles, in which Einstein assumed that elementary particles are held together by gravitational as well as electromagnetic type forces. From a modern perspective, Einstein's theory can be interpreted as a vector type model, with the gravitational action constructed as a linear combination of the Ricci scalar, of the trace of the matter energy-momentum tensor, and of a massive self-interacting vector type field. To obtain the properties of stellar models we consider the field equations for a static, spherically symmetric system, and we investigate numerically their solutions for different equations of state of quark and neutron matter, by assuming that the self-interaction potential of the vector field either vanishes or is quadratic in the vector field potential. We consider quark stars described by the MIT bag model equation of state and in the Color Flavor Locked phase, as well as compact stars consisting of a Bose-Einstein Condensate of neutron matter, with neutrons forming Cooper pairs. Constant density stars, representing a generalization of the Interior Schwarzschild solution of general relativity, are also analyzed. Also, we consider the Douchin-Haensel (SLy) equation of state. The numerical solutions are explicitly obtained in both standard general relativity, and the Einstein dark energy model and an in depth comparison between the astrophysical predictions of these two theories are performed. As a general conclusion of our study, we find that for all the considered equations of state a much larger variety of stellar structures can be obtained in the Einstein dark energy model, including classes of stars that are more massive than their general relativistic counterparts.

Generalizing the coupling between geometry and matter: $f(R,L_m,T)$ gravity

We generalize and unify the $f(R,T)$ and $f(R,L_m)$ type gravity models by assuming that the gravitational Lagrangian is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar $R$, of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor $T$, and of the matter Lagrangian $L_m$, so that $L_{grav}=f(R,L_m,T)$. We obtain the gravitational field equations in the metric formalism, the equations of motion for test particles, and the energy and momentum balance equations, which follow from the covariant divergence of the energy-momentum tensor. Generally, the motion is non-geodesic, and takes place in the presence of an extra force orthogonal to the four-velocity. The Newtonian limit of the equations of motion is also investigated, and the expression of the extra acceleration is obtained for small velocities and weak gravitational fields. The generalized Poisson equation is also obtained in the Newtonian limit, and the Dolgov-Kawasaki instability is also investigated. The cosmological implications of the theory are investigated for a homogeneous, isotropic and flat Universe for two particular choices of the Lagrangian density $f(R,L_m,T)$ of the gravitational field, with a multiplicative and additive algebraic structure in the matter couplings, respectively, and for two choices of the matter Lagrangian, by using both analytical and numerical methods.

Matter perturbations in Einstein dark energy model

We consider the growth rate of matter perturbations in the Einstein dark energy theory. The theory consists of the Einstien-Hilbert Lagrangian plus the trace of the energy momentum tensor, coupled non-minimally to a dynamical vector field. We will show that the theory has three fixed points corresponding to the dust, radiation and de Sitter universes. Due to the present of trace of the energy-momentum tensor in the Lagrangian, the fixed points occurs in different locations compared to $Λ$CDM theory. We will analyze the theory with and without cosmological constant. We will fit the model parameters using two independent data sets corresponding to the Hubble parameter $H$ and also $fσ_8$. The theory is then shown to be consistent with observational data.

Static spherically symmetric three-form stars

We consider interior static and spherically symmetric solutions in a gravity theory that extends the standard Hilbert-Einstein action with a Lagrangian constructed from a three-form field $A_{αβγ}$, which generates, via the field strength and a potential term, a new component in the total energy-momentum tensor of the gravitational system. We formulate the field equations in Schwarzschild coordinates and investigate their solutions numerically for different equations of state of neutron and quark matter, by assuming that the three field potential is either a constant or possesses a Higgs-like form. Moreover, stellar models, described by the stiff fluid, radiation-like, bag model and the Bose-Einstein condensate equations of state are explicitly obtained in both general relativity and three-form gravity, thus allowing an in-depth comparison between the astrophysical predictions of these two gravitational theories. As a general result we find that for all the considered equations of state, three-form field stars are more massive than their general relativistic counterparts. As a possible astrophysical application of the obtained results, we suggest that the 2.5$M_{\odot}$ mass compact object, associated with the GW190814 gravitational wave event, could be in fact a neutron or a quark star described by the three-form field gravity theory.

Growth of matter density perturbations in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Recently, a novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimensions has been introduced [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 (2020) 081301]. We will investigate cosmological consequences of this model in details. We will consider linear matter density perturbations and also estimate relevant modified gravity parameters. Specially we will concentrate on the growth rate of non-relativistic matter perturbations on top of FRW geometry and show that for a narrow range of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, observational data will be satisfied. In this paper, it is shown that for enough large values of the coupling constant, the suggested $σ_8$ will become greater than $Λ$CDM value.

Cosmology in theories with derivative matter coupling

A new class of modified gravity theories with a healthy higher order derivative terms of a function of the matter Lagrangian $f(L_m)$ is considered. Generally the energy momentum tensor is not conserved, leading to the fifth force similar to $f(R,T)$ theories. We will however show that in the FRW background there exists two possibilities corresponding to conservative and non-conservative cases. Cosmological implications of both cases with different functions of the matter Lagrangian $f$ will be investigated in details and we will show that current observational data can be satisfied in this model. The non-conservative case however, predicts less matter sources at early times and more deceleration. Evolution of the matter density perturbation in the longitudinal gauge is also considered for dust matter sources. We will show that the late time behavior of the matter density perturbation is in agreement with current observational data at sub-horizon limit.

Modified gravity one-loop partition function

The one-loop partition function of the $f(R,R_{μν}R^{μν})$ gravity theory is obtained around AdS$_4$ background. After suitable choice of the gauge condition and computation of the ghost determinant, we obtain the one-loop partition function of the theory. The traced heat kernel over the thermal quotient of AdS$_4$ space is also computed and the thermal partition function is obtained for this theory. We have then consider quantum corrections to the thermodynamical quantities in some special cases.

The Einstein dark energy model

In 1919 Einstein tried to solve the problem of the structure of matter by assuming that the elementary particles are held together solely by gravitational forces. In addition, Einstein also assumed the presence inside matter of electromagnetic interactions. Einstein showed that the cosmological constant can be interpreted as an integration constant, and that the energy content of the Universe should consist of 25\% gravitational energy, and 75\% electromagnetic energy. In the present paper we reinterpret Einstein's elementary particle theory as a vector type dark energy model, by assuming a gravitational action containing a linear combination of the Ricci scalar and the trace of the matter energy-momentum tensor, as well as a massive self-interacting vector type dark energy field, coupled with the matter current. Since in this model the matter energy-momentum tensor is not conserved, we interpret these equations from the point of view of the thermodynamics of open systems as describing matter creation from the gravitational field. In the vacuum case the model admits a de Sitter type solution. The cosmological parameters, including Hubble function, deceleration parameter, matter energy density are obtained as a function of the redshift by using analytical and numerical techniques, and for different values of the model parameters. For all considered cases the Universe experiences an accelerating expansion, ending with a de Sitter type evolution.

Energy conditions in mimetic-$f(R)$ gravity

The energy conditions of mimetic-$f(R)$ gravity theory is analyzed. We will obtain the parameter space of the theory in some special forms of $f(R)$ in which the self-acceleration is allowed. In this sense, the parameter space is obtained in a way that it violates the strong energy condition while satisfying the weak, null and dominant energy conditions. We will also consider the condition that the Dolgov-Kawasaki instability is avoided. This condition will be further imposed in the parameter space of the theory. We will show that the parameter space of the mimetic-$f(R)$ gravity is larger than $f(R)$ gravity theory.

The Maxwell-Chern-Simons gravity and its cosmological implications

We consider the cosmological implications of a gravitational theory containing two vector fields coupled minimally to gravity as well as a generalized Chern-Simons term that couples the two vector fields. One of the vector fields is the usual Maxwell field, while the other is a constrained vector field with constant norm included in the action via a Lagrange multiplier. The theory admits a de Sitter type solution, with healthy cosmological perturbations. We will show that there is 6 degrees of freedom propagate on top of de Sitter space-time, two tensor polarizations and four degrees of freedom related to two massless vector fields interacting with each other via Chern-Simons interaction term. We also investigate in detail the behavior of the geometric and physical parameters of a homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi type I Universe, by using both analytical and numerical methods, by assuming that the matter content of the Universe can be described by the stiff causal and pressureless dust fluid equations of state. The time evolution of the Bianchi type I Universe strongly depends on the initial conditions of the physical and geometrical quantities, as well as on the numerical values of the model parameters. Two important observational parameters, the mean anisotropy parameter, and the deceleration parameter, are also studied in detail, and we show that independently of the matter equation of state the cosmological evolution of the Bianchi type I Universe always ends in an isotropic and exponentially accelerating, de Sitter type, phase.

Vector dark energy models with quadratic terms in the Maxwell tensor derivatives

We consider a vector-tensor gravitational model with terms quadratic in the Maxwell tensor derivatives, called the Bopp-Podolsky term. The gravitational field equations of the model and the equations describing the evolution of the vector field are obtained and their Newtonian limit is investigated. The cosmological implications of a Bopp-Podolsky type dark energy term are investigated for a Bianchi type I homogeneous and anisotropic geometry for two models, corresponding to the absence and presence of the self-interacting potential of the field, respectively. The time evolutions of the Hubble function, of the matter energy density, of the shear scalar, of the mean anisotropy parameter, and of the deceleration parameter, respectively, as well as the field potentials are obtained for both cases by numerically integrating the cosmological evolution equations. In the presence of the vector type dark energy with quadratic terms in the Maxwell tensor derivatives, depending on the numerical values of the model parameters, the Bianchi type I Universe experiences a complex dynamical evolution, with the dust Universes ending in an isotropic phase. The presence of the self-interacting potential of the vector field significantly shortens the time interval necessary for the full isotropization of the Universe.

Quantum corrections to the generalized Proca theory via a matter field

We study the quantum corrections to the generalized Proca theory via matter loops. We consider two types of interactions, linear and nonlinear in the vector field. Calculating the one-loop correction to the vector field propagator, three- and four-point functions, we show that the non-linear interactions are harmless, although they renormalize the theory. The linear matter-vector field interactions introduce ghost degrees of freedom to the generalized Proca theory. Treating the theory as an effective theory, we calculate the energy scale up to which the theory remains healthy.

The Weyl-Cartan Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this paper, we consider the generalized Gauss-Bonnet action in $4$-dimensional Weyl-Cartan space-time. In this space-time, the presence of torsion tensor and Weyl vector implies that the generalized Gauss-Bonnet action will not be a total derivative in four dimension space-time. It will be shown that the higher than two time derivatives can be removed from the action by choosing suitable set of parameters. In the special case where only the trace part of the torsion remains, the model reduces to GR plus two vector fields. One of which is massless and the other is massive. We will then obtain the healthy region of the 5-dimensional parameter space of the theory in some special cases.
