Transmit Covariance and Waveform Optimization for Non-orthogonal CP-FBMA System

Filter bank multiple access (FBMA) without subbands orthogonality has been proposed as a new candidate waveform to better meet the requirements of future wireless communication systems and scenarios. It has the ability to process directly the complex symbols without any fancy preprocessing. Along with the usage of cyclic prefix (CP) and wide-banded subband design, CP-FBMA can further improve the peak-to-average power ratio and bit error rate performance while reducing the length of filters. However, the potential gain of removing the orthogonality constraint on the subband filters in the system has not been fully exploited from the perspective of waveform design, which inspires us to optimize the subband filters for CP-FBMA system to maximizing the achievable rate. Besides, we propose a joint optimization algorithm to optimize both the waveform and the covariance matrices iteratively. Furthermore, the joint optimization algorithm can meet the requirements of filter design in practical applications in which the available spectrum consists of several isolated bandwidth parts. Both general framework and detailed derivation of the algorithms are presented. Simulation results show that the algorithms converge after only a few iterations and can improve the sum rate dramatically while reducing the transmission delay of information symbols.

Data-Rate Driven Transmission Strategy for Deep Learning Based Communication Systems

Deep learning (DL) based autoencoder is a promising architecture to implement end-to-end communication systems. One fundamental problem of such systems is how to increase the transmission rate. Two new schemes are proposed to address the limited data rate issue: adaptive transmission scheme and generalized data representation (GDR) scheme. In the first scheme, an adaptive transmission is designed to select the transmission vectors for maximizing the data rate under different channel conditions. The block error rate (BLER) of the first scheme is 80% lower than that of the conventional one-hot vector scheme. This implies that higher data rate can be achieved by the adaptive transmission scheme. In the second scheme, the GDR replaces the conventional one-hot representation. The GDR scheme can achieve higher data rate than the conventional one-hot vector scheme with comparable BLER performance. For example, when the vector size is eight, the proposed GDR scheme can double the date rate of the one-hot vector scheme. Besides, the joint scheme of the two proposed schemes can create further benefits. The effect of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is analyzed for these DL-based communication systems. Numerical results show that training the autoencoder using data set with various SNR values can attain robust BLER performance under different channel conditions.

Tracking System for Optical Mobile Communication and the Design Rules

Free space optical communication has been applied in many scenarios because of its security, low cost and high rates. In such scenarios, a tracking system is necessary to ensure an acceptable signal power. Free space optical links were considered unable to support optical mobile communication when nodes are randomly moving at a high speed because existing tracking schemes fail to track the nodes accurately and rapidly. In this paper, we propose a novel tracking system exploiting multiple beacon laser sources. At the receiver, each beacon laser's power is measured to estimate the orientation of the target. Unlike existing schemes which drive servo motors multiple times based on consecutive measurements and feedback, our scheme can directly estimate the next optimal targeting shift for the servo motors based on a single measurement, allowing the tracking system to converge much faster. Closed-form outage probability expression is derived for the optical mobile communication system with ideal tracking, where pointing error and moving statistics are considered. To maintain sufficient average power and reduce the outage probability, the recommended size of a source spot is expressed in closed form as a function of the target's statistics of random moving, providing insights to the system design.

Joint User Identification and Channel Estimation Over Rician Fading Channels

This paper considers crowded massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications over a Rician fading channel, where the number of users is much greater than the number of available pilot sequences. A joint user identification and line-of-sight (LOS) component derivation algorithm is proposed without requiring a threshold. Based on the derived LOS component, we design a LOS-only channel estimator and an updated channel estimator.

Sparse Channel Estimation and Hybrid Precoding Using Deep Learning for Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO

Channel estimation and hybrid precoding are considered for multi-user millimeter wave massive multi-input multi-output system. A deep learning compressed sensing (DLCS) channel estimation scheme is proposed. The channel estimation neural network for the DLCS scheme is trained offline using simulated environments to predict the beamspace channel amplitude. Then the channel is reconstructed based on the obtained indices of dominant beamspace channel entries. A deep learning quantized phase (DLQP) hybrid precoder design method is developed after channel estimation. The training hybrid precoding neural network for the DLQP method is obtained offline considering the approximate phase quantization. Then the deployment hybrid precoding neural network (DHPNN) is obtained by replacing the approximate phase quantization with ideal phase quantization and the output of the DHPNN is the analog precoding vector. Finally, the analog precoding matrix is obtained by stacking the analog precoding vectors and the digital precoding matrix is calculated by zero-forcing. Simulation results demonstrate that the DLCS channel estimation scheme outperforms the existing schemes in terms of the normalized mean-squared error and the spectral efficiency, while the DLQP hybrid precoder design method has better spectral efficiency performance than other methods with low phase shifter resolution.

Performance of Wireless Optical Communication With Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces and Random Obstacles

It is difficult for free space optical communication to be applied in mobile communication due to the obstruction of obstacles in the environment, which is expected to be solved by reconfigurable intelligent surface technology. The reconfigurable intelligent surface is a new type of digital coding meta-materials, which can reflect, compute and program electromagnetic and optical waves in real time. We purpose a controllable multi-branch wireless optical communication system based on the optical reconfigurable intelligent surface technology. By setting up multiple optical reconfigurable intelligent surface in the environment, multiple artificial channels are built to improve system performance and to reduce the outage probability. Three factors affecting channel coefficients are investigated in this paper, which are beam jitter, jitter of the reconfigurable intelligent surface and the probability of obstruction. Based on the model, we derive the closed-form probability density function of channel coefficients, the asymptotic system's average bit error rate and outage probability for systems with single and multiple branches. It is revealed that the probability density function contains an impulse function, which causes irreducible error rate and outage probability floors. Numerical results indicate that compared with free-space optical communication systems with single direct path, the performance of the multi-branch system is improved and the outage probability is reduced.

Then, we propose a novel generalized data representation (GDR) aiming to improve the data rate of DL-based communication systems. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed GDR scheme has lower training complexity, comparable block error rate performance and higher channel capacity than the conventional one-hot vector scheme. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in DL-based communication systems and prove that training at a high SNR could produce a good training performance for autoencoder.

Efficient Soft-Output Gauss-Seidel Data Detector for Massive MIMO Systems

For massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) detection has been shown to achieve near-optimal performance but suffers from excessively high complexity due to the large-scale matrix inversion. Being matrix inversion free, detection algorithms based on the Gauss-Seidel (GS) method have been proved more efficient than conventional Neumann series expansion (NSE) based ones. In this paper, an efficient GS-based soft-output data detector for massive MIMO and a corresponding VLSI architecture are proposed. To accelerate the convergence of the GS method, a new initial solution is proposed. Several optimizations on the VLSI architecture level are proposed to further reduce the processing latency and area. Our reference implementation results on a Xilinx Virtex-7 XC7VX690T FPGA for a 128 base-station antenna and 8 user massive MIMO system show that our GS-based data detector achieves a throughput of 732 Mb/s with close-to-MMSE error-rate performance. Our implementation results demonstrate that the proposed solution has advantages over existing designs in terms of complexity and efficiency, especially under challenging propagation conditions.

Efficient Channel Estimator with Angle-Division Multiple Access

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) is an enabling technology of 5G wireless communication. The performance of an M-MIMO system is highly dependent on the speed and accuracy of obtaining the channel state information (CSI). The computational complexity of channel estimation for an M-MIMO system can be reduced by making use of the sparsity of the M-MIMO channel. In this paper, we propose the hardware-efficient channel estimator based on angle-division multiple access (ADMA) for the first time. Preamble, uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) training are also implemented. For further hardware-efficiency consideration, optimization regarding quantization and approximation strategies have been discussed. Implementation techniques such as pipelining and systolic processing are also employed for hardware regularity. Numerical results and FPGA implementation have demonstrated the advantages of the proposed channel estimator.

Improving Massive MIMO Belief Propagation Detector with Deep Neural Network

In this paper, deep neural network (DNN) is utilized to improve the belief propagation (BP) detection for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. A neural network architecture suitable for detection task is firstly introduced by unfolding BP algorithms. DNN MIMO detectors are then proposed based on two modified BP detectors, damped BP and max-sum BP. The correction factors in these algorithms are optimized through deep learning techniques, aiming at improved detection performance. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the DNN detectors in comparison with various BP modifications. The neural network is trained once and can be used for multiple online detections. The results show that, compared to other state-of-the-art detectors, the DNN detectors can achieve lower bit error rate (BER) with improved robustness against various antenna configurations and channel conditions at the same level of complexity.

Efficient Sparse Code Multiple Access Decoder Based on Deterministic Message Passing Algorithm

Being an effective non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique, sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is promising for future wireless communication. Compared with orthogonal techniques, SCMA enjoys higher overloading tolerance and lower complexity because of its sparsity. In this paper, based on deterministic message passing algorithm (DMPA), algorithmic simplifications such as domain changing and probability approximation are applied for SCMA decoding. Early termination, adaptive decoding, and initial noise reduction are also employed for faster convergence and better performance. Numerical results show that the proposed optimizations benefit both decoding complexity and speed. Furthermore, efficient hardware architectures based on folding and retiming are proposed. VLSI implementation is also given in this paper. Comparison with the state-of-the-art have shown the proposed decoder's advantages in both latency and throughput (multi-Gbps).

Segmented Successive Cancellation List Polar Decoding with Tailored CRC

As the first error correction codes provably achieving the symmetric capacity of binary-input discrete memory-less channels (B-DMCs), polar codes have been recently chosen by 3GPP for eMBB control channel. Among existing algorithms, CRC-aided successive cancellation list (CA-SCL) decoding is favorable due to its good performance, where CRC is placed at the end of the decoding and helps to eliminate the invalid candidates before final selection. However, the good performance is obtained with a complexity increase that is linear in list size $L$. In this paper, the tailored CRC-aided SCL (TCA-SCL) decoding is proposed to balance performance and complexity. Analysis on how to choose the proper CRC for a given segment is proposed with the help of \emph{virtual transform} and \emph{virtual length}. For further performance improvement, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) scheme is incorporated. Numerical results have shown that, with the similar complexity as the state-of-the-art, the proposed TCA-SCL and HARQ-TCA-SCL schemes achieve $0.1$ dB and $0.25$ dB performance gain at frame error rate $\textrm{FER}=10^{-2}$, respectively. Finally, an efficient TCA-SCL decoder is implemented with FPGA demonstrating its advantages over CA-SCL decoder.

On the Low-Complexity, Hardware-Friendly Tridiagonal Matrix Inversion for Correlated Massive MIMO Systems

In massive MIMO (M-MIMO) systems, one of the key challenges in the implementation is the large-scale matrix inversion operation, as widely used in channel estimation, equalization, detection, and decoding procedures. Traditionally, to handle this complexity issue, several low-complexity matrix inversion approximation methods have been proposed, including the classic Cholesky decomposition and the Neumann series expansion (NSE). However, the conventional approaches failed to exploit neither the special structure of channel matrices nor the critical issues in the hardware implementation, which results in poorer throughput performance and longer processing delay. In this paper, by targeting at the correlated M-MIMO systems, we propose a modified NSE based on tridiagonal matrix inversion approximation (TMA) to accommodate the complexity as well as the performance issue in the conventional hardware implementation, and analyze the corresponding approximation errors. Meanwhile, we investigate the VLSI implementation for the proposed detection algorithm based on a Xilinx Virtex-7 XC7VX690T FPGA platform. It is shown that for correlated massive MIMO systems, it can achieve near-MMSE performance and $630$ Mb/s throughput. Compared with other benchmark systems, the proposed pipelined TMA detector can get high throughput-to-hardware ratio. Finally, we also propose a fast iteration structure for further research.

Residual-Based Detections and Unified Architecture for Massive MIMO Uplink

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) technique brings better energy efficiency and coverage but higher computational complexity than small-scale MIMO. For linear detections such as minimum mean square error (MMSE), prohibitive complexity lies in solving large-scale linear equations. For a better trade-off between bit-error-rate (BER) performance and computational complexity, iterative linear algorithms like conjugate gradient (CG) have been applied and have shown their feasibility in recent years. In this paper, residual-based detection (RBD) algorithms are proposed for M-MIMO detection, including minimal residual (MINRES) algorithm, generalized minimal residual (GMRES) algorithm, and conjugate residual (CR) algorithm. RBD algorithms focus on the minimization of residual norm per iteration, whereas most existing algorithms focus on the approximation of exact signal. Numerical results have shown that, for $64$-QAM $128\times 8$ MIMO, RBD algorithms are only $0.13$ dB away from the exact matrix inversion method when BER$=10^{-4}$. Stability of RBD algorithms has also been verified in various correlation conditions. Complexity comparison has shown that, CR algorithm require $87\%$ less complexity than the traditional method for $128\times 60$ MIMO. The unified hardware architecture is proposed with flexibility, which guarantees a low-complexity implementation for a family of RBD M-MIMO detectors.

Molecular Computing for Markov Chains

In this paper, it is presented a methodology for implementing arbitrarily constructed time-homogenous Markov chains with biochemical systems. Not only discrete but also continuous-time Markov chains are allowed to be computed. By employing chemical reaction networks (CRNs) as a programmable language, molecular concentrations serve to denote both input and output values. One reaction network is elaborately designed for each chain. The evolution of species' concentrations over time well matches the transient solutions of the target continuous-time Markov chain, while equilibrium concentrations can indicate the steady state probabilities. Additionally, second-order Markov chains are considered for implementation, with bimolecular reactions rather that unary ones. An original scheme is put forward to compile unimolecular systems to DNA strand displacement reactions for the sake of future physical implementations. Deterministic, stochastic and DNA simulations are provided to enhance correctness, validity and feasibility.

Polar-Coded Forward Error Correction for MLC NAND Flash Memory Polar FEC for NAND Flash Memory

With the ever-growing storage density, high-speed, and low-cost data access, flash memory has inevitably become popular. Multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory, which can well balance the data density and memory stability, has occupied the largest market share of flash memory. With the aggressive memory scaling, however, the reliability decays sharply owing to multiple interferences. Therefore, the control system should be embedded with a suitable error correction code (ECC) to guarantee the data integrity and accuracy. We proposed the pre-check scheme which is a multi-strategy polar code scheme to strike a balance between reasonable frame error rate (FER) and decoding latency. Three decoders namely binary-input, quantized-soft, and pure-soft decoders are embedded in this scheme. Since the calculation of soft log-likelihood ratio (LLR) inputs needs multiple sensing operations and optional quantization boundaries, a 2-bit quantized hard-decision decoder is proposed to outperform the hard-decoded LDPC bit-flipping decoder with fewer sensing operations. We notice that polar codes have much lower computational complexity compared to LDPC codes. The stepwise maximum mutual information (SMMI) scheme is also proposed to obtain overlapped boundaries without exhausting search. The mapping scheme using Gray code is employed and proved to achieve better raw error performance compared to other alternatives. Hardware architectures are also given in this paper.
