Low-Complexity Learning-Based Beamforming for Ultra-Massive MIMO THz Communications

Terahertz (THz) communications have emerged as a key technology for escalating data rates in future generation wireless networks. However, severe propagation losses at THz frequencies pose significant challenges, which can be mitigated via ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) systems employing highly directional transmissions. To this end, codebook-based analog beamforming constitutes a realistic solution, eliminating the need for explicit channel estimation. However, in UM-MIMO systems, the use of extremely narrow beams makes beam training and alignment increasingly challenging, leading to a substantial increase in the number of codewords to be tested and, thus, to high computational complexity. In this paper, a novel artificial neural network architecture for low-complexity beam training in UM-MIMO THz systems is presented, which does not require a constant feedback link between transmitter and receiver to obtain the best beamformer and combiner pair. An inception and residual network, which is trained based on the received signal powers using the transmit and receive codewords generated from predefined hierarchical codebooks, is designed. Our numerical investigations demonstrate that the proposed machine learning approach significantly reduces the complexity of UM-MIMO transmit and receive beamforming design, as compared to the standard exhaustive and hierarchical beam searching methods.

Neural Precoding in Complex Projective Spaces

Deep-learning (DL)-based precoding in multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems involves training DL models to map features derived from channel coefficients to labels derived from precoding weights. Traditionally, complex-valued channel and precoder coefficients are parameterized using either their real and imaginary components or their amplitude and phase. However, precoding performance depends on magnitudes of inner products between channel and precoding vectors, which are invariant to global phase rotations. Conventional representations fail to exploit this symmetry, leading to inefficient learning and degraded generalization. To address this, we propose a DL framework based on complex projective space (CPS) parameterizations of both the wireless channel and the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) precoder vectors. By removing the global phase redundancies inherent in conventional representations, the proposed framework enables the DL model to learn geometry-aligned and physically distinct channel-precoder mappings. Two CPS parameterizations based on real-valued embeddings and complex hyperspherical coordinates are investigated and benchmarked against two baseline methods. Simulation results demonstrate substantial improvements in sum-rate performance and generalization, with negligible increase in model complexity.

Swarm Intelligence Optimization of Multi-RIS Aided MmWave Beamspace MIMO

We investigate the performance of a multiple reconfigurable intelligence surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with multiple users (UEs). We focus on a challenging scenario in which the direct links between the base station (BS) and all UEs are blocked, and communication is facilitated only via RISs. The maximum ratio transmission (MRT) is utilized for data precoding, while a low-complexity algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) is designed to jointly perform beam selection, power allocation, and RIS profile configuration. The proposed optimization approach demonstrates positive trade-offs between the complexity (in terms of running time) and the achievable sum rate. In addition, our results demonstrate that due to the sparsity of beamspace channels, increasing the number of unit cells (UCs) at RISs can lead to higher achievable rates than activating a larger number of beams at the MIMO BS.

Multi-Active RIS-Assisted THz Cell-Free Systems: Spectral and Energy Efficiency Tradeoff

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) are effective solutions for mitigating large path loss and inter-cell interference in terahertz (THz) systems. However, passive RISs are notably limited from double-fading attenuation, motivating the use of active RISs with power amplification to improve signal strength. In this paper, we investigate a multi-active RIS-aided wideband CF-mMIMO system for THz communications, considering low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) to optimize the spectral efficiency (SE)-energy efficiency (EE) tradeoff by adjusting precoding vectors and reflection coefficient response of the RISs, subject to power and minimum desirable per-user rate constraints. This leads to a highly complex and non-convex, multi-objective and fractional optimization problem. To solve it, we propose a tailored quadratic transformation to manage the fractional form. This allows decomposition into two subproblems, which are iteratively solved via a successive convex approximation algorithm to optimize the precoding vectors and active RIS reflection coefficients until convergence. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed active RIS-aided CF-mMIMO system effectively addresses propagation loss and limited scattering in THz communication, achieving superior EE and SE compared to conventional passive RIS across diverse scenarios. Furthermore, the integration of low-resolution DACs shows significant improvement in EE while preserving satisfactory communication performance.

Beyond Diagonal IRS Assisted Ultra Massive THz Systems: A Low Resolution Approach

The terahertz communications have the potential to revolutionize data transfer with unmatched speed and facilitate the development of new high-bandwidth applications. This paper studies the performance of downlink terahertz system assisted by beyond diagonal intelligent reconfigurable surface (BD-IRS). For enhanced energy efficiency and low cost, a joint precoding and BD-IRS phase shift design satisfying the $1$-bit resolution constraints to maximize the spectral efficiency is presented. The original problem is non-linear, NP-hard, and intricately coupled, and obtaining an optimal solution is challenging. To reduce the complexity, we first transform the optimization problem into two problems and then iteratively solve them to achieve an efficient solution. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach for the BD-IRS assisted terahertz system significantly enhances the spectral efficiency compared to the conventional diagonal IRS assisted system.

Integrated Access and Backhaul via LEO Satellites with Inter-Satellite Links

The third generation partnership project (3GPP) has recently defined two frequency bands for direct access with satellites, which is a concrete step toward realizing the anticipated space-air-ground integrated networks. In addition, given the rapid increase in the numbers of satellites orbiting the Earth and emerging satellites applications, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) might soon need to operate with integrated access and backhaul (IAB), which has been standardized for terrestrial networks to enable low-cost, flexible and scalable network densification. Therefore, this work investigates the performance of satellite IAB, where the same spectrum resources at a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite are utilized to provide access to a handheld user (UE) and backhaul via inter-satellite links. The UE is assumed to operate with frequency division duplex (FDD) as specified by the 3GPP, while both FDD and time division duplex (TDD) are investigated for backhauling. Our analysis demonstrate that the interference between access and backhaul links can significantly affect the performance under TDD backhauling, especially when the access link comes with a high quality-of-service demands.

Achievable Rate of a STAR-RIS Assisted Massive MIMO System Under Spatially-Correlated Channels

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-assisted massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) is a promising technology for applications in next-generation networks. However, reflecting-only RIS provides limited coverage compared to a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS). Hence, in this paper, we focus on the downlink achievable rate and its optimization of a STAR-RIS-assisted mMIMO system. Contrary to previous works on STAR-RIS, we consider mMIMO, correlated fading, and multiple user equipments (UEs) at both sides of the RIS. In particular, we introduce an estimation approach of the aggregated channel with the main benefit of reduced overhead links instead of estimating the individual channels. {Next, leveraging channel hardening in mMIMO and the use-and-forget bounding technique, we obtain an achievable rate in closed-form that only depends on statistical channel state information (CSI). To optimize the amplitudes and phase shifts of the STAR-RIS, we employ a projected gradient ascent method (PGAM) that simultaneously adjusts the amplitudes and phase shifts for both energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) STAR-RIS operation protocols.} By considering large-scale fading, the proposed optimization can be performed every several coherence intervals, which can significantly reduce overhead. Considering that STAR-RIS has twice the number of controllable parameters compared to conventional reflecting-only RIS, this accomplishment offers substantial practical benefits. Simulations are carried out to verify the analytical results, reveal the interplay of the achievable rate with fundamental parameters, and show the superiority of STAR-RIS regarding its achievable rate compared to its reflecting-only counterpart.

Integrated Access and Backhaul via Satellites

To allow flexible and cost-efficient network densification and deployment, the integrated access and backhaul (IAB) was recently standardized by the third generation partnership project (3GPP) as part of the fifth-generation new radio (5G-NR) networks. However, the current standardization only defines the IAB for the terrestrial domain, while non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are yet to be considered for such standardization efforts. In this work, we motivate the use of IAB in NTNs, and we discuss the compatibility issues between the 3GPP specifications on IAB in 5G-NR and the satellite radio regulations. In addition, we identify the required adaptation from the 3GPP and/or satellite operators for realizing an NTN-enabled IAB operation. A case study is provided for a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite-enabled in-band IAB operation with orthogonal and non-orthogonal bandwidth allocation between access and backhauling, and under both time- and frequency-division duplex (TDD/FDD) transmission modes. Numerical results demonstrate the feasibility of IAB through satellites, and illustrate the superiority of FDD over TDD transmission. It is also shown that in the absence of precoding, non-orthogonal bandwidth allocation between the access and the backhaul can largely degrades the network throughput.

Joint Linear Precoding and DFT Beamforming Design for Massive MIMO Satellite Communication

This paper jointly designs linear precoding (LP) and codebook-based beamforming implemented in a satellite with massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) antenna technology. The codebook of beamforming weights is built using the columns of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix, and the resulting joint design maximizes the achievable throughput under limited transmission power. The corresponding optimization problem is first formulated as a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINP). To adequately address this challenging problem, an efficient LP and DFT-based beamforming algorithm are developed by utilizing several optimization tools, such as the weighted minimum mean square error transformation, duality method, and Hungarian algorithm. In addition, a greedy algorithm is proposed for benchmarking. A complexity analysis of these solutions is provided along with a comprehensive set of Monte Carlo simulations demonstrating the efficiency of our proposed algorithms.

Combining Relaying and Reflective Surfaces: Power Consumption and Energy Efficiency Analysis

Hybrid relaying networks (HRNs) combining both a relay and an intelligent reflective surface (IRS) can lead to enhanced rate performance compared to non-hybrid relaying schemes, where only either an IRS or a relay is utilized. However, utilizing both the relay and the IRS simultaneously results in higher power consumption for the HRNs compared to their counterpart. In this work, we study the required transmit power levels and the energy efficiency (EE) of HRNs utilizing both a half-duplex decode-and-forward (HD-DF) relay and an IRS, and compare their performance with non-hybrid relaying schemes. The impact of the required channel estimation overheads is considered when the reflective beamforming design (RBD) at the IRS is carried out under both instantaneous and statistical channel state information models. Also, the investigation is performed for both slow- and fast-changing environments. In terms of the transmit power requirements, our results show that HRNs can lead to higher power savings if the number of reflective elements at the IRS is not very large. However, non-hybrid relaying schemes are shown to be more energy-efficient, unless the targeted rate is high and the IRS is distant from both transmitter and receiver but within a close proximity to the relay.

Cooperative Hybrid Networks with Active Relays and RISs for B5G: Applications, Challenges, and Research Directions

Among the recent advances and innovations in wireless technologies, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have received much attention and are envisioned to be one of the enabling technologies for beyond 5G (B5G) networks. On the other hand, active (or classical) cooperative relays have played a key role in providing reliable and power-efficient communications in previous wireless generations. In this article, we focus on hybrid network architectures that amalgamate both active relays and RISs. The operation concept and protocols of each technology are first discussed. Subsequently, we present multiple use cases of cooperative hybrid networks where both active relays and RISs can coexist harmoniously for enhanced rate performance. Furthermore, a case study is provided which demonstrates the achievable rate performance of a communication network assisted by either an active relay, an RIS, or both, and with different relaying protocols. Finally, we provide the reader with the challenges and key research directions in this area.

Coverage Probability of STAR-RIS assisted Massive MIMO systems with Correlation and Phase Errors

In this paper, we investigate a simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisting a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) system. In particular, we derive a closed-form expression for the coverage probability of a STAR-RIS assisted mMIMO system while accounting for correlated fading and phase-shift errors. Notably, the phase configuration takes place at every several coherence intervals by optimizing the coverage probability since the latter depends on statistical channel state information (CSI) in terms of large-scale statistics. As a result, we achieve a reduced complexity and overhead for the optimization of passive beamforming, which are increased in the case of STAR-RIS networks with instantaneous CSI. Numerical results corroborate our analysis, shed light on interesting properties such as the impact of the number of RIS elements and the effect of phase errors, along with affirming the superiority of STAR-RIS against reflective-only RIS.

Impact of Phase-Noise and Spatial Correlation on Double-RIS-Assisted Multiuser MISO Networks

We study the performance of a phase-noise impaired double reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser (MU) multiple-input single-output (MISO) system under spatial correlation at both RISs and base-station (BS). The downlink achievable rate is derived in closed-form under maximum ratio transmission (MRT) precoding. In addition, we obtain the optimal phase-shift design at both RISs in closed-form for the considered channel and phase-noise models. Numerical results validate the analytical expressions, and highlight the effects of different system parameters on the achievable rate. Our analysis shows that phase-noise can severely degrade the performance when users do not have direct links to both RISs, and can only be served via the double-reflection link. Also, we show that high spatial correlation at RISs is essential for high achievable rates.

Successive Decode-and-Forward Relaying with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

The key advantage of successive relaying (SR) networks is their ability to mimic the full-duplex (FD) operation with half-duplex (HD) relays. However, the main challenge that comes with such schemes is the associated inter-relay interference (IRI). In this work, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-enhanced SR network, where one RIS is deployed near each of the two relay nodes to provide spatial suppression of IRI, and to maximize the gain of desired signals. The resultant max-min optimization problem with joint phase-shift design for both RISs is first tackled via the semidefinite programming (SDP) approach. Then, a lower-complexity solution suitable for real-time implementation is proposed based on particle swarm optimization (PSO). Numerical results demonstrate that even relatively small RISs can provide significant gains in achievable rates of SR networks, and the proposed PSO scheme can achieve a near optimal performance.

Double-RIS Communication with DF Relaying for Coverage Extension: Is One Relay Enough?

In this work, we investigate the decode-and-forward (DF) relay-aided double reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted networks, where the signal is subject to reflections from two RISs before reaching the destination. Different relay-aided network architectures are considered for maximum achievable rate under a total power constraint. Phase optimization for the double-RIS channels is tackled via the alternating optimization and majorization-minimization (MM) schemes. Moreover, closed-form solutions are obtained for each case. Numerical results indicate that the deployment of two relays, one near each RIS, achieves higher rates at low and medium signal-to noise ratios (SNRs) compared to placing a single relay between the two RISs; while at high SNRs, the latter approach achieves higher rates only if the inter-relay interference for the former case is considerably high.
