Finiteness and rigidity of optimal destabilizing subvarieties for the J-equation

We prove that when the J-equation does not admit a smooth solution, there is always only a finite number of obstructing optimally destabilizing curves and divisors on compact Kähler manifolds of any dimension. For threefolds, this establishes the unconditional finiteness of all optimally destabilizing subvarieties. We moreover characterize the union of these optimal subvarieties, proving that they are contained in the locus where a natural continuity path loses local smooth compactness. Finally, to address subvarieties that are neither curves nor divisors, we prove a rigidity criterion which prevents optimal cycles from moving in compact one-parameter families, with further consequences for their deformation and symmetry properties.

CscK metrics on birational models of projective varieties

We prove that every complex projective variety is birational to a smooth projective manifold admitting a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric. For any smooth projective variety, a birational cscK model is obtained by resolving the codimension two base locus of a general Lefschetz pencil in a sufficiently positive linear system. The cscK polarization is given explicitly, producing a cscK model also when the initial variety is unstable. In dimension two this proves the folklore conjecture that the blowup of any complex projective surface in enough points admits cscK metrics.

Wall-chamber decompositions for generalised Monge-Ampère equations

Generalised Monge-Ampère equations form a large class of PDE including Donaldson's J-equation, inverse Hessian equations, some supercritical deformed Hermitian-Yang Mills equations, and some Z-critical equations. Solvability of these equations is characterised by numerical criteria involving intersection numbers over all subvarieties, and in this paper, we aim to characterise algebraically what happens when these nonlinear Nakai-Moishezon type criteria fail. As a main result, we show that under mild positivity assumptions, there is a finite number of subvarieties violating the Nakai type criterion, and such subvarieties are moreover rigid in a suitable sense. This gives first effective solvability criteria for these families of PDE, thus improving on work of Gao Chen, Datar-Pingali, Song and Fang-Ma, and provides first existence results in higher dimension of compact Kähler manifolds exhibiting a natural PDE analog of Bridgeland's locally finite wall-chamber decomposition.

The set of destabilizing curves for deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills and Z-critical equations on surfaces

We show that on any compact Kähler surface existence of solutions to the Z-critical equation can be characterized using a finite number of effective conditions, where the number of conditions is bounded above by the Picard number of the surface. This leads to a first PDE analogue of the locally finite wall-chamber decomposition in Bridgeland stability. As an application we characterize optimally destabilizing curves for Donaldson's J-equation and the deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills equation, prove a non-existence result for optimally destabilizing test configurations for uniform J-stability, and remark on improvements to convergence results for certain geometric flows.

Openness of uniform K-stability in the Kähler cone

We prove continuity results for new stability thresholds related to uniform K-stability and deduce that uniform K-stability is an open condition in the Kähler cone of any compact Kähler manifold, thus establishing an algebro-geometric counterpart to a classical result of LeBrun-Simanca for constant scalar curvature (cscK) metrics. This settles a folklore conjecture in the field, and in particular implies openness of uniform K-stability for smooth polarized varieties. Moreover, it strengthens evidence supporting the uniform version of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for arbitrary polarizations, including the case of irrational polarizations and non-projective Kähler manifolds. As a key tool we introduce a new norm on test configurations and establish estimates for non-archimedean energy functionals in terms of this norm. This leads to new characterizations of uniform K-stability by restricting to test configurations that satisfy certain uniform bounds. As a byproduct we obtain continuity results for a stability threshold related to non-archimedean entropy and deduce openness of uniform J-stability, as well as openness of J-stability in the projective case.

Existence of cscK metrics on smooth minimal models

Given a compact Kähler manifold $X$ it is interesting to ask whether it admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric. In this short note we show that there always exist cscK metrics on compact Kähler manifolds with nef canonical bundle, thus on all smooth minimal models, and also on the blowup of any such manifold. This confirms an expectation of Jian-Shi-Song \cite{JianShiSong} and extends their main result from $K_X$ semi-ample to $K_X$ nef, with a direct proof that does not appeal to the Abundance conjecture. As a byproduct we obtain that the connected component $\mathrm{Aut}_0(X)$ of a compact Kähler manifold with $K_X$ nef is either trivial or a complex torus.

Optimal lower bounds for Donaldson's J-functional

In this paper we provide an explicit formula for the optimal lower bound of Donaldson's J-functional, in the sense of finding explicitly the optimal constant in the definition of coercivity, which always exists and takes negative values in general. This constant is positive precisely if the J-equation admits a solution, and the explicit formula has a number of applications. First, this leads to new existence criteria for constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metrics in terms of Tian's alpha invariant. Moreover, we use the above formula to discuss Calabi dream manifolds and an analogous notion for the J-equation, and show that for surfaces the optimal bound is an explicitly computable rational function which typically tends to minus infinity as the underlying class approaches the boundary of the Kähler cone, even when the underlying Kähler classes admit cscK metrics. As a final application we show that if the Lejmi-Székelyhidi conjecture holds, then the optimal bound coincides with its algebraic counterpart, the set of J-semistable classes equals the closure of the set of uniformly J-stable classes in the Kähler cone, and there exists an optimal degeneration for uniform J-stability.

A Partial Comparison of Stability Notions in Kähler Geometry

In this follow up work to [45, 33, 32, 46] we introduce and study a notion of geodesic stability restricted to rays with prescribed singularity types. A number of notions of interest fit into this framework, in particular algebraic- and transcendental K-polystability, equivariant K-polystability, and the geodesic K-polystability notion introduced by the author in [46]. We provide a partial comparison of the above notions, and show equivalence of some of these notions provided that the underlying manifold satisfies a certain 'weak cscK' condition. As an application this proves K-polystability of a new family of cscK manifolds with irrational polarization.

On K-polystability of cscK manifolds with transcendental cohomology class

In this paper we study K-polystability of arbitrary (possibly non-projective) compact Kähler manifolds admitting holomorphic vector fields. As a main result, we show that existence of a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric implies 'geodesic K-polystability', in a sense that is expected to be equivalent to K-polystability in general. In particular, in the spirit of an expectation of Chen-Tang we show that geodesic K-polystability implies algebraic K-polystability for polarized manifolds. Hence our main result recovers a possibly stronger version of results of Berman-Darvas-Lu in this case. As a key part of the proof we also study subgeodesic rays with singularity type prescribed by singular test configurations, and prove a result on asymptotics of the K-energy functional along such rays. In an appendix by R. Dervan it is moreover deduced that geodesic K-polystability implies equivariant K-polystability. This improves upon previous work and proves that existence of a cscK (or extremal) Kähler metric implies equivariant K-polystability (resp. relative K-stability).

K-semistability of cscK manifolds with transcendental cohomology class

We prove that constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) manifolds with transcendental cohomology class are K-semistable, naturally generalising the situation for polarised manifolds. Relying on a very recent result by R. Berman, T. Darvas and C. Lu regarding properness of the K-energy, it moreover follows that cscK manifolds with finite automorphism group are uniformly K-stable. As a main step of the proof we establish, in the general Kähler setting, a formula relating the (generalised) Donaldson-Futaki invariant to the asymptotic slope of the K-energy along weak geodesic rays.
